Travel and dining vouchers on offer in South Australia's algal bloom summer plan

The South Australian government will make $50 dining vouchers available for 300,000 customers at coastal hospitality businesses. This comes on top of a second round of coastal travel vouchers to encourage tourism over summer.

00:00Enjoying the spoils of South Australia's coast as the algal bloom threatens to spoil summer trade.

00:09Sometimes the perception of the algal bloom is doing as much harm as the algal bloom itself.

00:14The state and federal governments hope to reverse that perception and lure people back to beaches

00:19by funding a $15 million voucher scheme for coastal hospitality venues.

00:24Each and every month we will have 60,000 cash back vouchers for up to $50 for South Australians to be able to enjoy at an establishment.

00:34It's on top of an expansion of the government's Coast Is Calling travel voucher scheme,

00:38which includes another 30,000 accommodation and experience coupons to encourage tourism along the state's coast over summer.

00:45This algal bloom situation is absolutely terrible and hopefully it will bring some people back.

00:51I think it would be a good idea to help businesses that are struggling.

00:55While only 30% of South Australian waters are affected by the algal bloom,

00:59coastal tourism operators say the economic impact stretches far beyond those boundaries.

01:04Some businesses, like this jet ski tour operator, say customers are reluctant to enter the water.

01:09Nick Shankalapare says only one voucher was credited to his business in the first round of the Coast Is Calling scheme.
