00:00What's up? We're Phone Boy. My name's James. My name's Wynn. We're out here at Lincoln Hall in Chicago on the Heartbreak Designer Tour. Our new record, Heartbreak Designers, is out now everywhere. And we're here with Digital Tour Bus. We're going to be showing you guys the band.

00:23Well, yeah, we just came from the West. It's a national tour, so we went all the way to California. You know, we actually cleaned this recently. We should have probably cleaned it before we did this, actually.

00:39I mean, I think it adds character, maybe. Just like the carnage of the road. It's honest. That's what it is. So this is the front. This is where we do the driving. Captain and co-pilot.

00:52You know, when we're driving, we usually, like, take turns and kind of trade off shifts. But, you know, it's vital to have the driver, obviously, and even almost more essential is the co-pilot, which is keeping us awake, keeping the van going in the right direction, the music pumping, all of that.

01:12We have some sweet accessories up here. We have, of course, Bessie, who is the tour cow.

01:21She's been across the country with us at least five times.

01:24Yeah, everyone knows Bessie.

01:26We usually have her up here kind of trapping all of our gas receipts, but she's migrated down to the dashboard recently.

01:36Let's see, what else do we got?

01:38Well, we got Red right here. Red's the, he's our album cover for Heartbreak Designer, so it was only appropriate to take him on this run.

01:46We keep him here. Actually, generally, we keep him in a case. We don't want him to be lost. We have an AirTag in there and everything, so I don't even think about stealing him.

01:54That's actually something we've had to think about a lot on the road and playing these shows.

01:59We've got a bunch of hot sauces. This is the Aardvark sauce.

02:02We've got a Perona. I think that's my favorite. Oh, this one's good, too.

02:09So, on our rider, every day, we ask for a local hot sauce, and for a long time, we had a hard case full of all of them, but after using a lot of them, they're just kind of...

02:25They kept spilling.

02:26They're spilling everywhere, so we've just kind of placed them around the van strategically.

02:29Oh, down here, we got the ketchup drawer. Yeah, if it opens.

02:37Yeah. Got a bunch of ketchup. Some regular ketchup, spicy ketchup. Keep that down there.

02:43Absolutely.

02:44Necessary for the road.

02:45You know, one of those things. I got a Tamagotchi right here.

02:49We have these amazing gifts that our fans have made for us, these beautiful crocheted roses.

02:56We have a song called Roses, so every night people are throwing them on stage, and, you know, when things are a little bit more durable, we try to hold on to them.

03:04Similarly, fan gifts, we got the bear Lego set, Children's Day Teddy Bear.

03:16Two kids in Denver. I think they just saw it on their journey to the van, or to the show.

03:23We've been doing a lot of sunflower seeds this tour.

03:26Cracked pepper is actually one of my favorites.

03:28I'd say it's the best flavor.

03:29I didn't realize I was doing it all wrong. You're supposed to eat the seed inside.

03:34You were kind of just crushing it.

03:35I was just crushing it, taking the flavor, no, and then spitting all of it out.

03:38Okay, fair enough.

03:40Well, I'm glad we have corrected that.

03:41Yeah.

03:41So, on long drives, for DJing, I guess it depends what music we're listening to. It depends on who's the co-pilot and who's driving.

03:53I like when we're going through, like, the West and James is DJing.

03:59You want to talk?

03:59Well, yeah, it's always good to throw on some sort of scenic music. Maybe some, like, you know, 50s through 70s country when you're out in the desert.

04:11You know, late night drives, Ricky loves to play, like, his club EDM mix.

04:17He loves that.

04:17So it feels like we're in the movie Drive.

04:19He also likes to play audiobooks, like, inspirational audiobooks. Ricky has a hard time with self-confidence.

04:26And it's, like, what's going on, man? Like, we all see you on stage every night, but, like, I mean, the inspirational audios, they kind of help us all, I would say.

04:37Yeah, yeah, it's cool. You know, self-esteem.

04:41So now we got the back of the van. This is the fun part of the van.

04:46Let's check this out.

04:47We recently flipped this seat around. To do so, we had to take out the metal beam in the middle because the distance between this and this,

04:56and this and that, it's not the same.

04:58It is very secure. I want everyone at home to know it's very safe.

05:01We think it's two-thirds as secure.

05:03Yeah, mom and dad, we are being safe.

05:05But, yeah, I guess back here, let's see, we got the hoop, the street pro games.

05:11You got, you know, got to get your dunks in when you can out on the road.

05:16We got neck pillow. This is my personal neck pillow.

05:21From Buc-ee's.

05:24Unbelievably cheap and high-quality stuff coming from them.

05:27How we usually do up here is it's either, like, today, a lot of the time it'll be James, myself, and our friend, Ozzy.

05:36He's doing lighting for us on tour.

05:40Kind of just kicking it.

05:42Yeah.

05:42You know, feet up.

05:44It's very conducive to conversations.

05:51You know, we're on a van tour, but we try to bring the luxuries of a bus with us.

08:05And our van has to reflect that.

08:22I think you kind of, like, dig it in, and you can really get those hard-to-reach spots.

08:38Hence, an enormous amount of cameras just hanging out.

08:45You know, you can never be too careful when you're out on the road.

08:49You kind of have to, like, sometimes pull this out and let people know what's up.

08:54Back here, this is usually where Ricky and Jordan sit.

09:12She used to, like, work on the road, too, on her laptop.

09:15So, she had, like, a little desk.

09:17But now, her and Ricky just, like, kind of chill back here.

09:22We're not really allowed to go back here unless they're driving.

09:26And we wouldn't want to.

09:29We got Ricky's skateboard.

09:36Oh, hacky sack has been huge for us.

09:38We're trying to get back into our roots.

09:41And that's a huge part of my life.

09:42We were just hacky sacking in the van on the way here.

09:44Yeah, um, that's the good thing about the nine-foot clearance.

09:48You can kind of stand up and get some sack in.

09:56Uh, this is a book called It by Stephen King.

09:59I think it's about a scary clown.

10:10Sometimes he reads this and he listens to motivational tapes.

10:18But he kind of has that sort of air to him.

10:24So, you get to spray down the disinfectant for sure.

10:32It's also what, uh, Ricky uses for his cologne.

11:18Wynn is sick and has made us a lot of different sort of cowboy hats for our times on the road,

11:25each representing a different album or a song.

14:43It's like, you know, it's our baby.

14:49And we own the trailer, and we do rent the van from, shout out Green Vans.

16:21So, this is our photographer, Nico.

16:23He was gracious enough to lend us his amazing tripod.

16:26Carbon fiber, you know, the whole deal.

16:28And we have a mini projector attached on top,

16:31connected to a phone through an HDMI cable.

16:34And a little JBL speaker, you know?

16:37Classic.

16:38Yeah, for the audio.

16:40And tell us about the screen, guys.

16:43Oh, this is our HD screen.

16:46We got from, I think, what's that one store in, like, the airport?

16:52Best Buy.

16:57It's really meant for IMAX, but we're able to sort of squeeze it into a smaller, you know,

17:04smaller format.

17:05It's user-friendly.

17:07Custom-made to fit the dimensions of our van and projector.

17:10And, of course, we also have the set list for the show.

17:14We keep that up next to the baseball scene from Twilight every time just so we can, you

17:19know, you lock in on one, you lock in on the other.

17:21It's like snap, snap, snap.

17:22And you're kind of feeling good, ready for the show.

17:26Yeah.

17:26Always grinding.

17:27I feel great.

17:28Yeah.

17:29Yeah, I'm so ready.

17:30So ready.

17:32Sometimes, you want to tell them what we did yesterday with the projector?

17:35Like after shows?

17:37Oh, yeah.

17:37Yesterday, we took the whole projector setup.

17:39We put it outside.

17:41And I don't know what you played on it, but we were playing movies outside while we were

17:44loading out onto, like, a garage.

17:46It was pretty sweet.

17:47And we were hacky-sacking.

17:49It was super cool.

17:50We're getting really good at it.

17:51Yeah.

17:52You know, at the end of the night, obviously, we got to pack up the amazing setup and put

17:56all our gear back in.

17:57And this thing is loaded from head to toe.

17:59So it really depends on who didn't drink, but whoever didn't drink is the Tetris guy

18:07of the night, you know, sliding in the cases here and the audio equipment.

18:11I would say the Tetris person is almost always our tour manager in front of house, John.

18:18Ricky just forgets because he's always drinking.

18:20Yeah.

18:20Maybe that's it.

18:21But he's always the guy.

18:23He's telling us what order we're putting things in.

18:26He owns, like, some giant cases that we have to stack and figure out their placement.

18:32So he's kind of the guy that we take our cues from.

18:34Everyone tries to pitch in, but he's kind of the, you know...

18:38He's the leader.

18:38The lead on the pack.

18:40I've seen him in crazy, like, split-like stances.

18:43Oh, for sure.

18:44Getting from one place to the other.

18:45Oh, someone forgot a bag?

18:46No problem.

18:47Just lifting with his back and neck, trying to get something on top.

18:51Yeah.

18:52It's Spider-Man level.

18:53My heavy suitcases especially.

18:55Thank you, John, for always lifting my heavy suitcase and putting it in the trailer.

18:59So the story about this seat, it's quite funny.

19:02Wynn is quite the remodeler of our van.

19:05He's really been so quintessential in the process of making the van so comfortable for nine people.

19:11I think Ricky James said pioneer.

19:13I wasn't...

19:14I don't know.

19:14Pioneer is a really great word.

19:17So he kind of redesigned the interior.

19:20And his mind thought that it was a great idea to remove this seat from our wonderful van.

19:27Put it in here for the trailer theater.

19:30And it really just opened up the floor plan of the van so that way everyone was just more connected.

19:35A lot more in tune with each other.

19:38Conversations flow a lot better.

19:40Some people might call it a conversation pit like the 70s.

19:43We really want to bring that back.

19:44So we feel very comfortable and, you know, just very on the same page with each other when we're traveling.

19:51And we get the added benefit of having this wonderful seat for our theater.

19:55And yes, at the end of the night, we pack around it.
