00:30now i understand what my father felt i understand what nehru felt sometimes it is passion and it is
00:37emotion that drives you so we don't give thought to rational considerations which other people might
00:44do are you scared of going back no do you worry for your life no you do know there is a threat
00:50to your life there have been public pronouncements from taliban leaders talking about sending suicide
00:54bombers to the airport when you return to courage you see ever since my overthrow in 1996 the people
01:01behind these militants have presided over a structure that has fueled anarchy and chaos and
01:09allowed the rise of extremism these people are very worried and they are frightened at my return
01:15so they're trying to threaten me and i understand that the forces within uh who have presided over
01:23this rise will do anything even conspire to murder me but i believe that life and death are in god's
01:29hands and i believe that nobody can be killed until their time is up and therefore i go back with my
01:36faith in god putting my faith in the people of my country

02:38down the stairs and the the airline trade union was there to welcome me and they waved their hands and
02:45i was just overwhelmed and i hope that i can live up to the great expectations which people here have and i feel
02:52so proud of the people of pakistan i feel so very proud of them it hurts us when people say that
02:59terrorists who come whether they're bombing tubes in london or whether they're plotting plots in germany
03:05or doing things and other countries have their trail leading back that's not the real image of pakistan
03:11the people that you see outside are the real image of pakistan these are the decent hard-working middle
03:17classes and working classes of pakistan who want to be empowered so that they can build a moderate modern
03:23nation where everybody has equality this is the real pakistan and if we get democracy this is the face
03:30of pakistan the world will see not the face of the extremists who have thrived under dictatorships

05:27What?
05:28What?
05:29This is the scene tonight in Pakistan.
05:41Two bombs went off in what they're calling an attempt to assassinate Benazir Bhutto, the
05:47first female leader of a Muslim nation.
05:50She had just arrived back in Pakistan after years away to move in and share power.
05:55This happened in Karachi, where the death toll quickly soared up to and over 100.
06:00Her opponents pledged to kill her, and tonight they came close.
06:05And in this nuclear nation, this situation could quickly unravel.
06:09She was an easy target.
06:10Her convoy was moving slowly, blocked by her own loving supporters.
06:15Everyone knew where she was heading, and the bombers were waiting.
06:19You did the next time to come.
06:20Like, let's go.
06:20Waala.
06:22We got an 점.
06:23We had a fortune.
06:23We have a lot of money, but it was really hot and we felt like we were going to go.
06:29But then they were coming, and they were ready.
06:30We had a lot of money, and they were going to be able to save us.
06:33We wanted to go, and they were going, and they were going to fill.
06:36I got it, I got it.
07:06They've also given statements that, you know, she's got to accept the new ground realities,
07:35because if she doesn't, she's open to suicide attacks.
07:38What does that mean?
07:39That the new ground reality is that no one should speak for the people and the people's rights and democracy,
07:46because if we speak up for the people, then we are going to be bumped off.
07:50This is what they're saying, that the new reality is that the extremists rule the roost.
07:56And if anybody does not keep silent, does not acquiesce in the conspiracy to spread extremism, that they are vulnerable to attack.
08:08Before I talk about service, I want to say something about Karachi.
08:15We fight an enemy that are radical killers, that's what they are.
08:24You know, they claim they're religious people, and they blow up Muslims.
08:30They have no regard for individual life.
08:33To the critics and idealists against this action, I would like to say, please do not expect or demand your level of democracy, which you learned over a number of centuries.
08:57We are also trying to learn, and we are doing well. Please give us time.
09:04And it has to stop. Somebody has to find a solution. And my solution is, let's restore democracy. Let's mobilize the strength of the people.
09:13Let's go to the masses. Let's strengthen the people. Let's give the people education. Let's give the people empowerment.
09:20Let's give the people employment. If our people are strong, our people will defend this land of ours.
09:27What are we doing? We are protesting the imposition of martial law on Pakistan, the refusal of General Musharraf to step down, and his refusal to hold free and fair elections.
09:42Until then, until he accedes to these demands, the BVP wanted a peaceful transition to democracy. We wanted to avoid blood on the streets, but it's our blood that will be shed, and we have never turned back from that, and we shall not again.
09:57It is not us who have brought Pakistan to this confrontation. It is the regime who has done this.
10:14Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you very much.
10:44Thank you very much.
10:50Of course, some might say that Pakistan has been under martial law since 1999, when General Pervez Musharraf brought Pakistan under the control of the armed forces.

14:42Binzir Bhutto had just addressed a rally of Pakistan People's Party supporters in the
14:51city of Ruhalbandi when the rally was rocked by an explosion.
14:57Initial police reports state that one or more assassins fired at Bhutto's bulletproof
15:03white Toyota Land Cruiser just as she was about to drive off after the rally.
15:09A suicide bomber, detonating a bomb, next to her vehicle, followed.
15:22These are the three shots fired and this is the blast.
15:39To getty images photographer, the
15:41fire is the most remarkable.
15:49Give me a shout!
15:55My own young person is my own.
15:59My own young person is my own.
16:03According to Getty Images photographer John Moore, Bhutto was standing through her vehicle
16:12sunroof to wave at supporters and fell back inside after three gunshots.
16:20The Times of India aired an amateur clip showing the assassin firing three gunshots at Bhutto
16:27before the blast.
16:42Following the attack, an unconscious Bhutto was taken to the Ruh al-Bandi General Hospital
16:48at 1735 local time where doctors, led by Ruh al-Bandi Medical College principal Mohamed
16:55Musada Khanan, tried to resuscitate her, performing a left anterolateral thoracotomy for open cardiac
17:02massage.
17:04Sadiqo Khan, Mohamed Khan's father, had tried to save Layakta Ali Khan when he was assassinated
17:11in the same park and rushed to the same hospital in 1951.
17:19Although Pakistan People's Party spokesman Farhatu Alaa Babari initially said that Bhutto
17:24was safe, she was declared dead at 1816 local time.
17:29...was addressing an election rally in Pakistan this evening.
17:33She finished her address and she got in her car.
17:36After pushing her address you see her just now getting into this white car, an SUV I think
17:40it is.
17:41She inside drives away and it's been that two men with 1847s surrounded her car and fired at
17:47it.
17:48She was shot in the neck, shot in the head.
17:51Our correspondent, Nizia Jahangri, says that according to doctors it was the bullet in the
17:55neck that actually killed her.
17:57Butoh.
17:58Butoh's cause of death has been much discussed and debated.
18:03Some commenters suggested that this debate was motivated by attempts to define Butoh's
18:09legacy.
18:10Perhaps Butoh would be considered a martyr if she died by gunshot, but not if she died by
18:17hitting her head following a bomb blast.
18:20Others asserted that the arguments against a death by gunshot were intended to blunt criticism
18:27that she was not adequately protected.
18:30Initial reports based on Pakistani interior ministry information reported that Butoh was
18:36killed by a gunshot wound to the neck.
18:39Al-Khamanu Malik, a security advisor for Pakistan People's Party, suggested that the killer opened
18:46fire as Butoh left the rally and that he hit her in the neck and chest before he detonated
18:52the explosives he was wearing.
18:54Jaweed Shima, an interior minister, stated that her injuries were caused either by her having been
19:01shot or from pellets packed into the detonated bomb that acted as shrapnel.
19:07On December 28th, however, the cause of Butoh's death became less clear.
19:14Pakistan's interior ministry announced that they now felt Butoh's death was the result
19:19of a neck fracture sustained when she ducked or fell into her vehicle and hit the sunroof
19:25catch immediately after the gunshots, but later reported her cause of death as a skull fracture.
19:32According to an Associated Press report, the ministry stated, quote,
19:37Butoh was killed when she tried to duck back into the vehicle and the shockwaves from the
19:42blast knocked her head into a lever attached to the sunroof, fracturing her skull.
19:49The ministry further added, in contradiction of the official hospital account, that Butoh suffered
19:55no gunshot or shrapnel injuries and that all gunshots missed her.
20:00Pakistan People's Party spokesman Farahattu Allah-e-Babari rejected claims that Butoh's death was caused by an accident.
20:09Butoh's lawyer and a senior official in the Pakistan People's Party Farahkou Naik said that the report was, quote,
20:17baseless and a pack of lies, unquote.
20:20He went on to support the view that the cause of death was two bullets hitting Butoh in the abdomen and the head.
20:30An anonymous Toyota official also rejected the notion that she could have even hit the lever based on its location in the car.
20:39In statements made to Pakistan's The News, Mohamedun Masada Khanan, one of the doctors who treated Butoh at Rualbandi General Hospital,
20:49described severe and depressed skull fractures, oval and overall shape, on the right side of Butoh's head.
20:57He apparently saw no other injuries and downplayed the possibility of bullet wounds, although he had previously spoken of them.
21:06One anonymous doctor said that Pakistani authorities took Butoh's medical records immediately after her death and that they told the doctors to stop talking.
21:18On December 31st, Atharu Minala of the Rualbandi General Hospital released a statement described as clinical notes signed by seven persons involved in Butoh's treatment at the hospital.
21:32These persons were not pathologists and did not conduct a formal autopsy.
21:39The statement first narrates the course of treatment from Butoh's arrival at the hospital until she was declared dead.
21:47The second part of the statement details the head wound and notes that, quote,
21:52detailed external examination of the body did not reveal any other external injury, unquote.
21:59X-rays had been taken of the head wound and were interpreted in the statement.
22:05According to the Washington Post, the crime scene was cleared before any forensic examination could be completed and no formal autopsy was performed before burial.
22:26Despite the ambiguity surrounding her death, Butoh's husband, Asifu Zirdari did not allow a formal autopsy to be conducted, citing his fears regarding the procedure being carried out in Pakistan.
22:41Butoh's funeral occurred on the afternoon of December 28th, 2007.
22:47Her body was moved from Tashakalala Air Base in Rualbandi to Sukhru Airport on December 28th at 1.20 a.m.
22:57Her children and her husband traveled with her body.
23:01Mourners from all over Pakistan made their way to Larkana to take part in the funeral ceremony for the former prime minister.
