Mark Atkinson reports from Ibrox after a damaging Champions League night for Rangers.
Transcript
00:00Hugely disappointing evening here for Rangers at Ibrox. Their Champions League hopes are in real danger after they lost 3-1 to Club Bruges in the first leg of their playoff tie.
00:14A disastrous 20-minute spell for Rangers. Near cataclysmic, you would say. Conceding three goals to the Belgian side, not helped by some terrible defending and a breakdown in communication from goalkeeper Jack Buckland and Nasser Giga.
00:27Both left the ball to each other in only the second minute to allow Romeo Verman to score.
00:31That sick tone, that terrible opening spell. Bruges added two more goals through Jordan Spielers and a wonderful strike from Brandon Necklin.
00:39They're sent to a half-minute, 3-0 on the 20-minute mark. At that point, with Ibrox baying for blood and booze, you actually felt that Rangers could go on to lose by five or six goals.
00:48In a way, it's a testament to them that they regrouped at the break. They managed to get in just the three goals time and actually put up a bit of a fight in the second half.
00:56Danilo scored not long after the restart, and it was actually Rangers who played the better football in that period.
01:01They had a goal disallowed by J.D. Gassimer on some of them, and then he kicked the ball out of Seymour Manili's hands.
01:06The Bruges keeper deemed to have control of the ball by VAR after a quick check.
01:11Had Rangers gone to Belgium next week with just a one-goal deficit, you might get more of a chance, but it's hard to see them overturning a two-goal advantage for the Belgians after this performance.
01:22Once again, Rangers were a very well-paid defence, leaving plenty of space for the visitors to exploit, but also making too many basic mistakes that get punished at this level.
01:31Neither side, to be honest, looked a true Champions League outfit, but you would say Club Bruges are much more equipped to take on the elite of European football.
01:40There's so much work still to be done for Rangers and their new head coach, Russell Martin.
01:46They still have a pulse in this tie, but Club Bruges are warm favourites to progress to the Champions League.
01:52It looks like another season of Europa League football for Rangers, unless they can pull a real rabbit out of their hands.
01:58It finished here in Ibrox, Rangers 1, Club Bruges 3.
02:02How did they feel?
02:03They fall asleep in the woods with your volatility to therazine.
02:06The first-time thing you've seen, it can be the first-time game, Mr. Barbice 2.
02:08Now, Moscow Bruges was an Injustice in the Southern and North.
02:10Which means that you won't have a try to play with all this.
02:15You've seen where the Royal people are, but you've seen where they have a great character.
