East London tower block residents hit out at 'slum-like' living conditions after water shortage
Transcript
00:00East Londoners living in Sutton Wharf were without running water for 15 hours
00:05during the city's fourth heatwave last week. We spoke to a resident about their
00:10experience. I own this home I've owned it for 10 years it was sold to us by the
00:19Guinness partnership and we really had nothing but problems over the 10 years
00:25the latest of which is we don't have any water at all toilets don't flush showers
00:33don't work we have no running water at all in the flat and that problem applies
00:38to the entire development of around 300 homes. In a statement to the standard
00:44the Guinness partnership said when the water supply cut out in graphite point we
00:49contacted all residents in the morning in the early afternoon on August 13th we
00:53said on-site contractors will hand out water to any residents. You can see a
01:02couple of holes drilled. Apparently that breaches it as a fire door because it
01:08actually the flames and the heat could go inside the door then
01:12but they've repeatedly said in their opinion even though we've had far people come out that that's not a problem
01:28and that's been like that for I don't know seven or eight years now. What they're doing is they're built
01:34they're building tomorrow's slums uh they're building the next generation of East London slums
01:42now these are these are quite nice buildings but Guinness has put no effort into wanting people to
01:50remain as residents here they've they're almost enthusiastic about the people that originally bought
01:56them moving out and leaving and becoming absent landlords and so I'd probably say in this particular
02:03tower I'd say probably 85 to 90 percent of the people that live here are short-term rentals and
02:11we don't know who they are and events vary and you know you can have some unusual people living here
02:20but effectively it takes the building on the trajectory of being a rental slum for the future.
02:27Guinness said they strongly refute the statement that they are building the slums of tomorrow.
02:32We're investing over 40 million pounds to significantly improve the buildings
02:36including remediating issues in the developers original construction. Guinness did not build these
02:41properties we purchased them from the developer. They had been signed off by building control at the
02:46point of purchase. We are rectifying any defects or quality issues now identified that would not
02:52have been visible at the point of purchase. We carry out inspection of fire doors including flat front
02:57doors in line with the requirements of the Fire Safety England Regulations 2022.
