02:18From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:26Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here on a Friday night.
02:28And we begin tonight with this historic high-stakes summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
02:33President Trump going into this summit saying he wanted a ceasefire from Putin in this war in Ukraine.
02:39And he wanted it today, coming out of this summit.
02:42Moments ago, both leaders speaking.
02:44President Trump saying there's no deal until there's a deal.
02:47Saying there were many points agreed on.
02:48But he said, I would say a couple of big ones that we haven't quite got there.
02:52But we've made some headway, the president said.
02:55But no declaration of any kind of ceasefire.
02:58President Trump inviting Putin to Anchorage, Alaska, to Joint Base Almendorf-Richardson.
03:02After meeting for more than two and a half hours.
03:04The two coming before cameras just moments ago.
03:06Putin calling the conversations with President Trump trustworthy.
03:10Using the word agreement.
03:11But Putin offering no details about any kind of agreement reached.
03:15Neither of them saying what they had agreed to.
03:18President Trump saying, I will call up NATO in a little while.
03:20I will call the various people I think are appropriate.
03:23And of course, I will call up President Zelensky.
03:25And tell him about today's meeting.
03:27Ultimately, President Trump said, it's up to them.
03:29Putin getting a red carpet welcome.
03:31President Trump waiting for him to arrive there in Alaska, extending a handshake, a warm welcome,
03:36ending the isolation Putin has faced from the U.S. and the West since he invaded Ukraine three and a half years ago.
03:42The two standing for photos.
03:44Alaska's mountains there in the distance, flanked by USF-22 Raptors.
03:48B-2 bombers flying overhead.
03:49Symbols, of course, of American power.
03:52The two of them then getting into President Trump's motorcade, the presidential limousine known as the Beast.
03:57Putin's smile seen in that window as they drove away to the meeting site for the summit.
04:02Then, of course, the meeting.
04:03Trump and Putin, each with two senior aides.
04:05Trump going into this, of course, hoping to set up a second summit, he said, with Putin and President Zelensky.
04:11President Trump saying he would be happy to attend that summit as well.
04:14President Zelensky was not invited to this meeting today.
04:17President Trump tonight saying he will now call President Zelensky.
04:21ABC's Chief White House Correspondent, Barry Bruce, leading us off in Anchorage with late reporting tonight.
04:27Tonight, after hours behind closed doors, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin emerging from their summit.
04:34There were many, many points that we agreed on.
04:37Most of them, I would say, a couple of big ones that we haven't quite gotten there, but we've made some headway.
04:44So, there's no deal until there's a deal.
04:48I will call up NATO in a little while.
04:51I will call up the various people that I think are appropriate.
04:56And I'll, of course, call up President Zelensky and tell him about today's meeting.
04:59It's ultimately up to them.
05:03It capped an extraordinary event not seen in more than a decade.
05:07Putin touching down on American soil, walking the red carpet as Trump waited to greet him.
05:14A hearty handshake, Trump then grasping Putin's arm.
05:19As they walked to the stage, Putin looking to the sky.
05:23As an American B-2 bomber flew overhead, a striking show of force.
05:29The warmth between the two leaders on full display, but the task at hand, deadly serious.
05:35President Putin, how can the U.S. trust your word?
05:37Putin asked, how can the U.S. trust your word?
05:41No answer, just more smiles.
05:43Trump escorting Putin to the presidential limo known as the Beast.
05:48Putin laughing and waving as they drove off together.
05:51Earlier, President Trump laying out today's objective.
05:54I want to see a ceasefire rapidly.
05:57I don't know if it's going to be today, but I'm not going to be happy if it's not today.
06:00Everyone said it can't be today, but I'm just saying I want the killing to stop.
06:04I'm in this to stop the killing.
06:06But overnight, with the summit just hours away, Russia continuing its bombardment of Ukraine.
06:14Are Rachel Scott asking the president about Putin's decision to launch those strikes?
06:19We saw that Russia continued its violence into Ukraine last night, launching even more drones.
06:24What did you make of that?
06:26I think they're trying to negotiate.
06:28Maybe it's just his fabric, his genes, his genetics.
06:32But he thinks that makes him, gives him strength in negotiating.
06:36I think it hurts him.
06:37For Ukraine's President Zelensky, who was not invited to today's summit,
06:41The lead-up to the talks offered no indication Moscow is preparing to end this war.
06:48On the day of the negotiations, they also kill people, he added.
06:52And that says a lot.
06:53Mr. Putin, will you embrace your ceasefire?
06:56Mr. Putin, will you commit to not killing any more civilians?
07:00That ceasefire, top of mind for President Trump as he went behind closed doors with Putin.
07:06Joining him, Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
07:09And Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, who helped arrange this summit.
07:13Putin, accompanied by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his top foreign advisor, Yuri Ushikov.
07:19Trump had hoped today's meeting would set the stage for a face-to-face sit-down with Putin and Zelensky.
07:25He had expected that second meeting would address what he called
07:28swapping of territories between the two countries.
07:31I've got to let Ukraine make that decision.
07:34And I think they'll make a proper decision.
07:36But I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine.
07:40I'm here to get them at a table.
07:41Putin's goal to broaden today's talks to cover nuclear weapons and economic cooperation with the United States.
07:47I expect that today's agreements will be the starting point, not only for the solution of the Ukrainian issue,
07:56but also will help us bring back business-like and pragmatic relations between Russia and the U.S.
08:01But tonight, as Putin returns to Russia, the future of peace talks, uncertain.
08:06The world waiting and wondering when this war will come to an end.
08:11David, a lot of questions remain here tonight.
08:14The president just said progress was made, but we still don't know exactly what was agreed to going into this.
08:20Trump said he wanted a cease-fire or there would be severe economic consequences.
08:25But in their remarks just now, neither Trump nor Putin even uttered the word cease-fire.
08:29And they didn't mention any future meeting with President Zelensky either.
08:33David.
08:34And in fact, President Trump saying there's no deal until there's a deal, which underscored it all.
08:39Mary Bruce leading us off.
08:40Thank you for the excellent coverage all afternoon, Mary.
08:42Now to the invite for Vladimir Putin seen by the world arriving on U.S. soil.
08:46I want to bring in Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz tonight.
08:49And Martha, this was quite the welcome for Vladimir Putin already being portrayed back in Russia as a victory.
08:55There were remarkable images, David, as soon as he got off his aircraft to see that red carpet rolled out in front of him by uniformed military from the United States.
09:07We saw Donald Trump give a little clap when he walked toward him on that red carpet.
09:15And then he approached him with that warm handshake, that friendly smile.
09:19And while the flyover of the B-2 and the F-35s was meant as a show of force, that really in some ways added to the pageantry.
09:29And then we had Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin side by side in the U.S. presidential limousine together in what is called the beast.
09:40And the Russians indeed are already considering this a victory.
09:43This is a very stark contrast to images we have seen from Ukraine, David.
09:49You have seen them as well.
09:50You were there in Bucha.
09:52There was a mass grave that all of us saw right after Russia invaded Ukraine.
09:58David.
09:59Martha Raddatz there in Anchorage for us.
10:01Martha, our thanks to you.
10:02And, of course, watching all of this, the people of Ukraine caught in the middle of this conflict for three and a half years now.
10:07Let's bring in ABC's chief foreign correspondent, Ian Pannell.
10:10He's right there in the capital of Kiev tonight, where the fighting continued in these last 24 hours.
10:14Ian, President Zelensky and Ukraine, of course, watching all of this from the sidelines.
10:19And now this expected phone call between President Trump and President Zelensky.
10:24Yeah, that's right.
10:25Everyone's waiting for that phone call.
10:26But everyone was waiting for a more significant outcome from this press conference.
10:31And they didn't hear any words of relief.
10:33As we've said time and again, no mention of a ceasefire, no indication that the war is any closer to an end.
10:39And while President Trump rolled out this red carpet for Putin in Alaska, Russia's war machine has been continuing to churn.
10:46More fighting on the front lines here in Ukraine.
10:49More aerial bombardment today.
10:51And air raid sirens even this evening in tonight.
10:54And Ukrainians hope for a ceasefire.
10:56Negotiations possibly to try and end this conflict.
10:59But they also know from bitter experience that Russian promises, American assurances have been broken before.
11:06And if Ukrainians were hoping that they could sleep a little easier in their beds tonight, well, unfortunately, they didn't get the news they were hoping for.
11:14David.
11:14Ian Pannell, Martha Raddatz, Mary Bruce.
11:16Our thanks to all of you for your coverage this afternoon and this evening.
11:19Ian, thank you.
11:20We do move on to the other major news this Friday night.
11:22Hurricane Aaron is now barreling across the Atlantic after strengthening from a tropical storm to the first hurricane of the Atlantic this season.
11:30Expect it to become a major Category 4, tracking right off the East Coast.
11:34Aaron is now a Category 1 hurricane right now, packing 75-mile-an-hour winds and forecast to become far more powerful, as I mentioned, a cap 4 as it approaches the East.
11:43The latest model showing its potential path.
11:45Two forces keeping it on that path.
11:47And we hope they stay right in place.
11:49Still a concern, though, dangerous rip currents expected from Florida all the way up to Maine.
11:54Very high and damaging waves along the mid-Atlantic.
11:57Meteorologist Brittany Bell from our New York station, WABC, watching this closely for us tonight.
12:01Brittany.
12:02David, today, Aaron, is a Category 1.
12:04But by Sunday, we could be talking about a major Category 4 hurricane.
12:08The latest satellite image shows it bearing down on the Leeward Islands and the track has it intensifying into a Category 3 as it moves north of Puerto Rico on Sunday.
12:16Late Sunday night, turning into a Category 4 and moving north in the Atlantic, maintaining that Category 4 status.
12:23These are the steering factors.
12:24High pressure in the Atlantic, a cold front of the Northeast.
12:27With this setup, most models have it staying offshore, but still close enough to bring dangerous rip currents along the East Coast Tuesday into Sunday.
12:36We're also talking about really high waves.
12:39They could see 10 to 12-foot waves along the outer banks of North Carolina.
12:43Rough surfing high waves possible, too, for the Northeast later next week.
12:46David.
12:47We'll be following it right here with you.
12:48Brittany, thank you again tonight.
12:50Now to the federal takeover of the police in Washington, D.C.
12:53Tonight, the emergency hearing and what a judge has now decided.
12:56ABC's Mola Lenghi in the Capitol tonight.
12:59Tonight, days after the Trump administration moved to assume federal control of Washington, D.C.'s police force, a district judge rejecting the plan.
13:08Late today, Judge Anna Reyes telling White House attorneys the Department of Justice clearly cannot direct the MPD to do anything.
13:16Administration officials agreeing to rewrite their directive that effectively placed Trump ally and DEA administrator Terry Cole as head of the MPD.
13:24Adding, they would seek to name Cole as the DOJ's designee for the purposes of requesting services from Mayor Muriel Bowser and the district's police force.
13:34Today's hearing focused on the department's command structure, not the larger so-called crime crackdown.
13:39Earlier this week, President Trump declaring a public safety emergency in D.C., deploying 800 National Guardsmen.
13:46I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor.
13:54And worse.
13:55But the district's official figures show a drop, violent crime recently hitting a 30-year low, down 26 percent since last year.
14:03Residents we spoke to saying they feel increased law enforcement presence is unnecessary.
14:08I understand wanting to get some help, to help with the crime, but I think the National Guard just adds an extra layer to people's anxiety and angst.
14:17Well, David, those National Guard troops are expected to remain here in the nation's capital for one month, although President Trump has indicated he'd like to see them here longer.
14:26David.
14:27Mola Lenghi in Washington tonight.
14:29Mola, thank you.
14:30We turn now to chilling video now released in the Idaho College murders.
14:34Surveillance showing confessed killer Brian Koberger's car circling the neighborhood the night of the murders.
14:39What it reveals and what Brian Koberger is now reportedly upset about in prison.
14:45Here's Kana Whipworth.
14:48Tonight, newly released surveillance footage authorities say shows confessed killer Brian Koberger driving around the house right before he murdered four University of Idaho students.
14:58His white Hyundai Elantra circling three times, minutes before he slipped through this sliding glass door and stabbed Kaylee Gonsalves, Madison Mogan, Zanna Kernodal and Ethan Chapin to death.
15:10At the time of the murders, you can hear a thud, a voice.
15:17And then what police believe was Kaylee's dog barking.
15:21Minutes later, the car seems speeding off.
15:24And we're now learning more about evidence experts gleaned from Koberger's phone.
15:30The Ph.D. student called and texted his parents 11 times in the hours after the murders.
15:36And they found Koberger searched online about serial killers even on Christmas night, just days before his arrest.
15:43It was ridiculous details about all of these different serial killers.
15:46And he just clicked one after the other after the other.
15:48Investigators say they could never prove a direct link between Koberger and his victims.
15:52But their digital experts found that he searched on Google Maps for Mad Greek, the restaurant where Maddie and Zanna both worked.
16:00That was the one thing that we found that kind of tied him to any victim.
16:05And David, Brian Koberger is now confined to a cell for the rest of his life where he's complaining about being taunted.
16:11But officials at the prison in Idaho tell us they maintain a safe and orderly environment.
16:17David.
16:17Kena Whitworth reporting.
16:18Kena, thank you.
16:19Tonight, the NCAA hitting Michigan football with major punishments over the sign-stealing scandal.
16:24The Big Ten program fined millions of dollars.
16:26Two former members of the coaching staff, including legendary head coach Jim Harbaugh, are facing multi-year bans.
16:32The NCAA says it found, quote, overwhelming evidence of a massive operation over three years.
16:36Michigan accused of recording opposing teams on the sidelines and destroying evidence.
16:41The school says it will appeal.
16:42When we come back here tonight, the white powder scare in New York City, five envelopes and what was inside.
16:47Also ahead, Dolly Parton is here with a personal invite tonight.
16:51And the frightening moments involving this jet trying to land in heavy winds.
16:55The plane's right wing scraping the runway.
16:58More on this in a moment here.
17:00Tonight, a security scare at the federal building here in New York City.
17:03Hazmat teams on the scene.
17:04Five envelopes containing white powder found in the mailroom of the ICE offices on the ninth floor.
17:10The FBI and Homeland Security also in that building.
17:13Workers were quickly evacuated.
17:14Initial testing shows the powder is boric acid, which authorities say is only generally harmful if ingested.
17:21On New York's Upper East Side, a large fire breaking out.
17:23Flames on the roof of an apartment building on East 95th Street.
17:27The fire burning through three penthouses.
17:29Several firefighters in a building superintendent were treated for minor injuries in that fire.
17:33Tonight, the rough landing involving a UPS flight.
17:35Video showing the cargo jet rocked by heavy winds while landing in Taiwan.
17:39The right wing there, scraping the ground, sparked shooting from the runway.
17:43The engine was damaged.
17:44The crew was not hurt.
17:46When we come back here tonight, the American hiker who did not survive after being bitten by a venomous snake at a state park where this happened.
17:54And then tonight, the former NFL star, his home has been ransacked.
17:57Authorities say his Hall of Fame ring has been stolen.
18:02To the Index of Other News, authorities reporting a hiker has died from a snake bite at Savage Gulf State Park in Tennessee.
18:08A witness telling first responders the victim may have picked up the snake.
18:12It's believed it was a timber rattlesnake among the most venomous snakes in that state.
18:17Tonight, a break-in at the home of former NFL star and Hall of Famer Andre Johnson, a legendary player for the Houston Texans.
18:22His home was ransacked.
18:24Several items stolen, including his Hall of Fame ring.
18:26He was the first Texans player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
