The Oxford English Dictionary has included over 6000 new words, and a few have sparked some debate over where the English language is heading. ‘Skibidi’, ‘tradwife’, and ‘delulu’ are some of the most controversial introductions, all stemming from social media.

00:01Heard the word skibbidy before? Skibbidy, skibbidy. Only on Scooby-Doo.
00:07Yeah. It's in the dictionary. It's now in the dictionary. That is bad.
00:14Language is always changing. A century ago, you might be horrified at some of the language we use,
00:19and going back further, we wouldn't even understand people speaking English at all.
00:23It's still changing to this day, and the most recent round of additions to the Oxford English Dictionary
00:28are a real example of where language is going.
00:316,000 new words have been added, many of which are all related to online spaces and technology,
00:36and some of them are, frankly, bonkers.
00:39If the newest one's added, we're taking a look at three of them. Skibbidy, Delulu, and Tradwife.
00:45To the untrained ear, it sounds made up, because it basically is.
00:48But to younger audiences out there, they know exactly what it all means.
00:52Yeah, it's just like abbreviation but delusional and stuff like that. Words change all the time.
00:57But it makes sense for it to be added, but obviously it's new and different, so a bit weird.
01:02Yeah.
01:06Well, it's up to whoever wants to use it.
01:08Yeah, it's like, I mean, old people might struggle with it.
01:11But, you know, younger people, they don't mind.
01:15Yeah, it's not a bad thing, is it?
01:18Delulu.
01:19Delulu's just like delusional.
01:20Yeah.
01:21It's just an abbreviation.
01:22I don't think it's an actual word.
01:23It's just like, OMG, OMG, or whatever.
01:26I think I agree with that, because it's like an easier way to say it.
01:31I'm just, you're being delusional.
01:32You're being delu-
01:33It's kind of more a fun way of people speaking.
01:35It's not like...
01:36I don't think it's an actual word, though, is it?
01:37It's an abbreviation.
01:38Well, it is, no.
01:39I don't know.
01:40I don't think it should be.
01:42I was talking about this, though, wasn't I?
01:44We were talking about social media and how it's changing our culture.
01:48And, yeah, well, that's a prime example, isn't it, now, if it's in the dictionary?
01:52Brain rot in there now, or something.
01:54I mean, the way the country's going at the moment, there's lots of languages.
01:58So, any couple of extra, what can I have?
02:02Basically, yeah, yeah, it's great.
02:05Can you see yourself using any of the words any time soon?
02:08Erm, maybe I have to drink, yeah.
02:12Other three words, skibbidi, delulu and tradwife, it's definitely skibbidi this garner the most attention.
02:17Because, unlike the others, by definition, it doesn't actually mean anything.
02:21Er, not skibbidi, but, like, other stuff, like memes and stuff, but not skibbidi.
02:27Like, that's, like, I don't know.
02:29That's, like, eight-year-olds, if I'm honest, you know what I mean?
02:31Erm, I don't know.
02:33I don't think it has a particular meaning, to be honest.
02:36So, I wouldn't agree with Bernard Dictionary.
02:39It's become a trend.
02:40So, everything's abbreviated to the extreme.
02:43Erm, yeah.
02:45So, the change in the form of culture and how we speak in general.
02:48I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but, let's be honest, culture's changing.
02:52You kind of just got to go with it, haven't you?
02:55Yeah.
02:56Phones came into play and that changed everything for everyone.
