00:19In the United States, President Donald Trump called on his Ukrainian counterpart,
00:29Vladimir Zelenskyy, to give up Crimea and NATO membership ahead of a bilateral meeting
00:34in Washington, D.C. on Monday.
00:42And Israel has started a new wave of genocide that's denounced this Monday by the Palestinian
00:46government and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
00:52Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:57I'm Luis Alberto Matos, former De Jesús Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:01We begin with the news.
01:04And in Bolivia, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal announced the preliminary results with 91.32%
01:21of the tallies counted.
01:23White-wing candidate Rodrigo Paz of the Christian Democrat Party was in the lead with 32.08%
01:28of the votes.
01:29That is 1,546,892 votes.
01:32In second place was the candidate of the Liberty Democracy Alliance, Jorge Tuto Quiroga, with
01:3826.94% of the votes.
01:40Both candidates will go to the second round on October 19th.
01:43Supreme Electoral Tribunal President Oscar Jacentoufel said the award pledge was kept and the preliminary
01:49results attest to it.
01:51When announcing the results, the President of the National Electoral Council, Oscar Jacentoufel,
01:59thanked the Bolivian people for their support, understanding and civic integrity demonstrated
02:04in this election day.
02:06We want to thank all the people who trusted the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, and especially
02:18to the Bolivian people for their support and their civic spirit displayed today.
02:27Thank you so much to the friends of our international observers.
02:33Let's now review the profile of the Christian Democratic Party candidate Rodrigo Paz Pereira.
02:40Rodrigo Paz was born on September 22nd, 1967 in the city of Santiago de Compostela, Spain,
02:46while his family was in exile during a time of military dictatorship in the country.
02:50Paz is the son of former President Jaime Paz Zamora, who governed under the auspices of
02:55dictator Hugo Banzer.
02:57He began his political career in 2002 as a deputy for two terms, and later became first a councilman
03:02and then-mayor of the city of Tarija in the south of the country in 2015.
03:06His time as mayor is one of the most controversial chapters of his career through the fact that
03:11several works promoted by him were questioned for alleged overpricing and execution failures.
03:16During his campaign, he has issued sexist statements against laws in defense of women victims
03:21of gender-based violence.
03:23In addition, his running mate, Edmond Lara, a former police captain, was dismissed in 2024 for disciplinary proceedings,
03:29despite presenting himself as a corruption whistleblower.
03:33And now let's get to know a little more about the candidate of the Liberty Democracy Alliance, Jorge Tuto Quiroga.
03:43Jorge Quiroga Ramirez, born in Cochabamba on May 5, 1960, is an engineer and business administrator who studied at several U.S. universities.
03:52After working with the multinational IBM, Quiroga began his political career under the mentorship of Hugo Banzer,
03:58Bolivia's military dictator, from 1971 to 1978.
04:03Years later, Banzer ran for president again, assuming office in 1997 with Quiroga as his vice president.
04:10At 65, Quiroga remains a neoliberal politician advocating for the privatization of public enterprises,
04:16a policy he first implemented in 2001 when he served as interim president, replacing Banzer.
04:22During his brief presidency, he enforced the privatization of state-owned companies and adopted radical neoliberal economic measures,
04:28which many argued led to widespread poverty in Bolivia.
04:31Quiroga has run for president multiple times, including in 2005, 2014, and 2020, but was unsuccessful on each occasion.
04:40In 2019, he took part in the coup d'etat that deposed the government of Evo Morales.
04:45President Luis Arce highlighted his government's commitment to democracy and peace.
04:56Through his social media, President Arce assured that they fulfilled the objective of guaranteeing a democratic and peaceful process,
05:02and he trusted that the Bolivian people would ratify their democratic vocation in the second round.
05:06For his part, Rodrigo Paz, who was the winner in this first round and became the big surprise by defeating the candidates from Washington and the extreme right,
05:13made a first call for national reconciliation.
05:16A little more belligerent, Jorge Quiroga, his competitor in the ballotage, pointed out against the state and in favor of individual properties.
05:23And on Sunday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro referred again to the boost in national tourism and described the sector as the secret weapon of the national economy.
05:38National and international indicators show impressive economic growth in the Bolivarian nation,
05:43which is subject to more than 600 illegal sanctions imposed by the United States and several of its Western partners.
05:49However, non-oil sectors have grown significantly.
05:52The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said Venezuela's gross domestic product increased by 6.2%.
05:58The tourism sector alone grew by 72%, boosted recently by the conclusion of an international fair.

06:38Welcome back.
06:39U.S. President Donald Trump called his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky to give up Crimea and NATO membership ahead of a bilateral meeting on Monday.
06:47On his social media, the U.S. President pointed out that these would be the necessary conditions for achieving a ceasefire and ending the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
06:55President Zelensky arrived in Washington on Sunday to meet with the U.S. President, the Vice President, and other members of his cabinet.
07:02The meeting was agreed upon after the Alaska summit between the leaders of Russia by reporting and the United States.
07:08Several European leaders will join the meeting in the Oval Office this Monday after being excluded from the meeting in Anchorage.
07:14And this Sunday, Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted that the fourth transformation wave imposed by her government has lifted nearly 14 million Mexicans out of 40.
07:30This is what she said from ECATPEC, in the state of Mexico, in the central region of the country, where she went to inaugurate a family medical center.
07:38The head of state said in a public event that although many have dismissed the figures recently published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography,
07:45she claims the feat achieved by the fourth transformation wave.
07:49In effect, according to the agency's report, Mexico currently records the lowest level of poverty in the last 40 years.
07:56In addition, the difference between the richest and the most poor has reduced from 38 to 14.
08:06In Ecuador, the crisis of violence continues.
08:13At least seven people were killed after an attack by criminal guns in a gaming room in Santo Domingo de los Tachelas, in the north-central part of the country.
08:21Among the victims were a foreign national and retired police officers, also known as Rasta, who was identified as the leader of a criminal organization operating in the area.
08:30In addition, they point out that the weapons carried by the attackers were of U.S. origin.
08:35It is worth noting that Ecuador is currently under a state of emergency in several provinces due to the increase in violence.
08:53In Haiti, former transitional president Fritz Alphonse-Jan denies any relation with Eric Prince's mercenary company amid growing suspicions surrounding an alleged contract.
09:03Fritz, who headed the transition council until July, asserted that he was unaware of anything related to the hiring of the mercenary company.
09:11The situation has been further complicated by Prince's assertion that he had been working with the government since March, despite Prince being under investigation for massacres and arms trafficking.
09:21The former transitional president called for an investigation, particularly given that the mercenary company intends to implement a system whereby goods entering from the Dominican Republic would be taxed and the proceeds would go to Prince's accounts and not to the countries.
09:36In Egypt, Ras Han Korab, a pristine Red Sea beach, 850 kilometers southeast of Cairo, lies within the protected Wadi Al-Gemal National Park, known for its untouched beauty.
09:53Now secretive tourism deal threatens its fragile ecosystem.
10:03In the heart of Egypt's Wadi Al-Gemal National Park, where endangered green sea turtles swim alongside snorkelers in turquoise waters and nest by moonlight on untouched sands,
10:13a controversial tourism project is casting a long shadow over one of the Red Sea's last wild shores.
10:23Ras Han Korab Beach, located over 850 kilometers southeast of Cairo, has long been a sanctuary for biodiversity and a hidden gem for eco-conscious travelers.
10:34Its coral reefs are considered among the world's most resilient to climate change, and its night skies, free of artificial light, offer a rare view of the Milky Way, but this fragile balance is now at risk.
10:49The importance of Han Korab beaches is that they contain significant ecosystems of utmost environmental, economic, and scientific importance.
11:00They also contain some endangered species, mainly turtles, therefore, any development is only appropriate within a limited scope, without impacting the existing marine ecosystems.
11:17In March, construction equipment unexpectedly appeared on Han Korab sands, sparking alarm among conservationists and park staff.
11:25What followed was a wave of public outcry, culminating in a petition signed by thousands under the banner Save Hank Orab.
11:32The outcry uncovered a previously unknown contract between an unnamed government entity and a private investment firm to build a resort inside the protected park.
11:41The deal had bypassed Egypt's Environment Ministry, the authority tasked with managing Wadi Al-Gemal since its designation as a protected area in 2003, faced with mounting pressure.
11:52The Environment Ministry opposed the project, and construction was temporarily halted.
11:55The heavy machinery was removed, but concerns remain.
11:59Unfortunately, recently, the focus has begun to be on the investment aspect of the reserve more than on preserving it, as an important natural and environmental resource.
12:17The project appears to have been approved by a government body that does not have jurisdiction over the protected reserve.
12:32Despite efforts by Maha Abdel Nasser to obtain details from the Environment Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office, no answers have been given.
12:40Officials have been unable to name the investment company behind the deal, and no environmental impact assessment has been made public.
12:51Today, visitors arriving at Ras Hank Orab are met with a new gate bearing the name in Latin letters.
12:58Entry now costs 300 Egyptian pounds around $6, five times the previous fee, with no indication of which authority is issuing the tickets.
13:07Where once there were only a few umbrellas in broken restrooms, there are now functioning toilets, sun loungers, and towels.
13:14A coffee and restaurant are said to be in the works.
13:18Yet the sense of legal and environmental uncertainty hangs heavy over the bay.
13:22For now, the turtles still return to nest beneath the stars, but for how much longer remains unclear.
13:29And on Monday, Japan's Foreign Affairs Minister Iwaiya Takeshi greeted his German counterpart, Johan Wadepoel, in Tokyo.
13:54In their meeting, they discuss how to strengthen the relationship between Japan and Germany,
13:59in the context of China's increasing military presence in the Indo-Pacific and the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
14:05During his Asian trip, Wadepoel is expected to visit the World Expo in Osaka, Japan, and then Indonesia from Wednesday,
14:13where he will meet with President Prabowo Subianto.

15:06Welcome back.
15:11Israel started a new wave of genocide as denounced this Monday by the Palestinian government
15:17and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
15:22Authorities point out that the occupants' new plans aggravate the suffering of thousands of Palestinian citizens.
15:28Genocidal Forces have intensified the attack on Gaza City as part of their expanded operations
15:34aimed at taking the last major population center of the enclave.
15:37Thousands of families exhausted, wounded, and hungry have fled from the Zaytun area
15:45after days of continuous attacks devastated several camps on the operational hospital in the area
15:50and killed seven civilians in the last day.
15:53Nearly 90 percent of 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza remain displaced,
15:57and the vast majority face starvation.
16:07A Palestinian official confirmed that the Palestinian resistance delegation in Cairo received a new 60-day
16:12truce proposal from Israel.
16:14Representatives of the Qatari government are reportedly arriving in the Egyptian capital
16:17to make another attempt to alleviate the inhumane situation in the Palestinian enclave.
16:22Mediators in Cairo have already presented Hamas with a proposal for an agreement,
16:27which includes the state's release of Israeli hostages or, if they are found dead, the return of their bodies.
16:32Meanwhile, in north of the Strip, Israeli occupation troops continue to besiege thousands of Palestinians.
16:37On Monday, the war of starvation claimed two new victims, a three-year-old boy and a six-month-old baby.
16:44And thousands took to the streets of Mexico City on Sunday to demand the country cut diplomatic relations with Israel
16:56amid the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
16:59Demonstrators marched through the city beating drums and pans while waving flags and banners aloft and chanting in support of the Palestinians.
17:07For many of the protesters, they say the scenes they have witnessed as the war continues in Gaza
17:13push them to come out and issue their demands to the government.
17:16It is important to make the situation that is happening visible beyond any political stance.
17:31It is a matter of humanity, nothing human can be alien to us, and it is important to come and say we do not agree with this.
17:37It is surprising that this is happening in this day and age, and that we see it, because social media has really opened our eyes to the world.
17:48It seems surprising to me that we see it and do nothing, and we can just continue with our lives as if nothing happened.
17:54So I think everything adds up.
17:56You know, in Nigeria authorities registered at least 40 people missing after a barge sank in the northeastern state of Sokoto.
18:06The vessel transporting over 50 passengers capsized while heading to the market in the town of Goronjo.
18:12The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed that only 10 people have been rescued so far.
18:18It also reported that it activated an immediate response mechanism and is working in collaboration with emergency services and local authorities to step up the surge.
18:26As well, it is added that they would provide necessary support to those affected and their families.
18:48In China, humanoid robots raced and punched their way through three days of a multi-sport competition at World Humanoid Robot Games, wrapping up on Sunday.
19:02The event comes as China has stepped up efforts to develop humanoid robots powered by artificial intelligence.
19:09They competed in sports such as soccer, running and boxing at the 12,000-seater national speed skating oval, built for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
19:24We participated in these games not to win a gold or silver medal.
19:29Our biggest win is not being the champion, but showing everyone the charisma of our mass produced robots.
19:37What matters the most is keeping up the healthy development of our industry.
19:44We learned a lot about how shooting works and that the competition, especially Tsinghua, is a very great shoot.
19:51What at the end makes the edge for them to win.
19:55So we learned a lot about that, but also about other strategies.
20:02Organizers say more than 500 humanoid robots on 280 teams from 16 countries participated in 26 events including boxing, football, track and field and service industry activities over three days.
20:20We never get to use the software and documentation before and we understood and we get to touch everything and observe how it was and how to move the parameters and to understand how to move the robots and how to control them better.
20:45Yeah.
20:48The robots came for gold and glory, but it was the missteps, tumbles and wipeouts that stole the show, drawing roars and laughter from the crowd, requiring humans help and leading to questions about how far.
21:00After all, the robots can go on their own. Industry observers also rounded to areas where the technology must advance.
21:08Both hardware and software still have room for improvement. This includes the generalization ability of large models, such as their adaptability across multiple scenarios, as well as navigation and recognition capabilities.
21:25Sensors, including vision, force sensing, and tactile sensing, as well as certain core components, also have potential for further development in terms of lightweight design and flexibility.
21:35The robot competitions have been held for decades, but these games are the first to focus specifically on robots that resemble human bodies, organizers say.
21:51The Chinese government has poured support into robotics, hoping to lead the industry.
