00:00Traditional big six.
00:01What are you calling untraditional?
00:02Sorry John.
00:03He doesn't do normal tactics.
00:05What's wrong with 4-4-2?
00:06That enthusiasm's not normal.
00:09Neither is being this obsessed.
00:13Streets won't forget not normal.
00:1818 games at the same time, far from normal.
00:22It's Sasha Madder for the Champions League.
00:26That's not normal mate.
00:28With all these competitions in one place, this is not normal.
00:32TNT Sports.
00:58This program is brought to you by FedEx and Bet365.
01:08UEFA Super Cup official partners.
01:10In just 34 days time, the Champions League anthem will be ringing around Europe's most iconic stadiums once again as the world's premier club competition kicks off in earnest.
01:30Before that though, the focus is on the less heralded Stadio Fruili as Udine in the northeast of Italy hosts the UEFA Super Cup, where the Champions League winners PSG face Spurs, their Europa League counterparts.
01:43A meeting of two clubs who've long dreamed of being accepted amongst global football's elite, and now they have the crowns to warrant it.
01:54What a night we've got in store here.
01:55What a night we've got in store here, a trophy that means so much to so many.
01:58You win it tonight and you hit the jackpot.
02:03And that's how quick it can happen.
02:04PSG in complete control of this Champions League final.
02:08It's first blood to Tottenham, and that sends the supporters wild in Bilbao.
02:13Paris Saint-Germain erupting to a Champions League win if you win.
02:18What a clearance from Nicky van der Venk.
02:20What a save by Giacario.
02:22Match winning safe, it's number five, and he can't believe it, look at it.
02:26It's history for Paris Saint-Germain.
02:28Finally they can call themselves European champions.
02:31It's glory, glory, Tottenham Hotspur.
02:34A change in fortunes on the pitch for Spurs and a change in the dugout as well.
02:52A month after his unveiling, Thomas Frank takes charge of his first competitive match as the Tottenham Hotspur manager.
02:59Well, summer signings Mohamed Kudus and João Polinha are all included in a starting eleven that so includes Richarlison leading the line.
03:14And there he is.
03:15Well, PSG's run to the final of the Club World Cup means their new campaign gets underway just 31 days after the last one ended defeat to Chelsea exactly a month ago today.
03:26The only blemish on an otherwise perfect season for Luis Enrique's exciting side.
03:31A first Champions League had, of course, long been the Parisians' goal.
03:36Can they now add a first Super Cup to their collection as well?
03:40What a night ahead then in Italy.
03:43It's fantastic to be back for the curtain raiser, the official curtain raiser of the new European season.
03:49Brilliant to have Karen and Glenn in the studio back with us as well.
03:53I tell you what, I'm really excited about this one.
03:55And, you know, a lot of people see it in a very different way, the Super Cup, because it is kind of,
03:59we start and then we've got a couple of weeks before the actual season kicks off officially for the Champions League.
04:04Now, PSG, emphatic last season, guys, absolutely emphatic, beat everyone in front of them.
04:11And then you get Spurs with a new manager in charge.
04:14They're very much the underdogs, but it's a real opportunity, isn't it, for Thomas Frank to just see how his side fare against the absolute best in Europe.
04:23Yeah, it's a wonderful test for him, really.
04:25And the squad, I mean, they will be underdogs, Res, you're absolutely spot on.
04:28And rightly so, I think Paris Saint-Germain have earned the crown of Champions League winners.
04:34And probably the best team at the moment in the world at this moment in time.
04:38There's a few clubs that will have a say this year, I'm sure, in the Champions League about that.
04:42But, no, what a test for Tottenham.
04:43I mean, you know, I don't think we can judge this result at the end of the day.
04:48Either way, whether Spurs, you know, win or get beaten, I think it's a real barometer for the manager.
04:53When a new manager comes in, he'll be looking at these players.
04:56He's set a tone out.
04:57He's set a shape out.
04:59Who's going to play in that shape?
05:00It might even change a little bit than what they've been used to.
05:03So they've had to adjust through this pre-season.
05:06But it's a very, very high-profile pre-season game, obviously, which has come early in the season for them.
05:12Yeah, and this is the thing, because a lot of people sometimes describe the Super Cup as perhaps like a glorified, friendly bit.
05:17When you think of the journey that the two sides have to get to actually be in the competitions that they won and then go through a run of 17 games to actually win them, they've earned the right to be in this position.
05:27And it's still a high-class official European trophy.
05:30Look, it's another trophy, isn't it?
05:32And sometimes when you win trophies, that winning culture, you keep on wanting more and more and more, and it can set the tone for your season.
05:38And particularly for Paris Saint-Germain, as Glenn mentioned, they waited so long to win that first Champions League.
05:44The ownership has, you know, gone through different strategies to get there.
05:47They were telling their players, this is another trophy and, again, we want this.
05:50And like Glenn mentioned there for Tottenham, you know, waited 17 years.
05:54So, you know, they've got a chance to get their hands on another one.
05:57And for a new manager and a new group, and look, maybe Paris Saint-Germain might be a little bit undercooked because they're coming back to pre-season.
06:03This is their first week back.
06:05But a good opportunity for Tottenham.
06:07And as Glenn mentioned, this is the best, potentially.
06:10So it's a good judgment to see, OK, Daniel Levy, can you give us a couple more players, maybe?
06:16Or are we happy with the squad?
06:17I think they'll want a few more players, Resh.
06:19Yeah, I think it's actually quite interesting to get started this early in a competitive game to actually ask those particular questions.
06:25And someone's got the questions for Thomas Frank now.
06:26He is, of course, the fifth permanent manager to sit in the Spurs hot seat in the last six years, isn't he?
06:31We can hear from him now as he takes charge of his first competitive match.
06:35He's been speaking to Jules Breach.
06:37Thanks, Reshman.
06:38I'm here with the new Spurs manager, Thomas Frank, who's named a new Spurs captain after Son's departure.
06:45What makes Romero the right choice to lead this team?
06:48I think the natural answer is, of course, he's a leader.
06:52He's a very experienced player that's tried a lot.
06:54For example, today we are going into a final.
06:58He's been in a few finals and been very successful.
07:02He knows what it's about.
07:03I think on and off the pitch, he will lead the team.
07:06Tell us about the team you've picked today and how you plan to set up in order to beat this PSG side.
07:12Of course, we are facing a very good team, but we are confident in ourselves.
07:16We believe.
07:17We know it's one game.
07:18We have a very good opportunity.
07:20We see opportunities.
07:21We want to be brave.
07:23We want to be aggressive and want to go forward.
07:25What are the biggest changes that the fans are going to see from your Spurs team to what we saw last season?
07:32I think that will be, let us ask me after a few games, I think this will probably be a special operation.
07:40Yeah, PSG are about as tough as a test as it can get right now.
07:44Can this game and the performance that Spurs put in be a good marker of where you're at heading into the new Premier League season?
07:51Yeah, I think in all games you play, there needs to be a foundation.
07:55There needs to be, I can say, a solidness.
07:57There needs to be a togetherness.
07:59There needs to be strong.
08:00We need to be, you know, very difficult to beat.
08:03I think that's the minimum criteria, and then we build from there.
08:07What would, backing up what was a very difficult trophy for Spurs to win last season, the Europa League,
08:13what would backing that up with another trophy so soon after say about this team that you're now in charge of?
08:19You know, I just showed a picture to the players that they are winners.
08:22They just proved it three months ago.
08:25They have won a very important trophy.
08:27Of course, they can do it today.
08:28So it's just about go out there, enjoy it, be brave and aggressive.
08:3117 years it took Tottenham to win that trophy.
08:35You can do it in your first game.
08:36That'll be a nice start, won't it?
08:38That'll be a nice start.
08:39Let's agree on that.
08:40I'm all in on that.
08:40Let's do that.
08:41Best of luck today.
08:42Thank you, Thomas.
08:43Appreciate it.
08:44He's always so affable, isn't he, Thomas Frank?
08:47And we can see him over the years, actually.
08:49The evolution of Thomas Frank just behind us.
08:52I mean, look, it was a terrible season in terms of the Premier League for Spurs.
08:56They lost 22 games and finished in 17th.
08:58I mean, what does this mean for Thomas Frank?
09:00Is there perhaps less pressure on him because, I mean, in terms of the league, the only way is up?
09:04Or is there now more pressure because of that Europa League win?
09:07Because, as Jules asked him there, you know, Spurs fans will be hoping that he can back it up with another trophy.
09:13There's always pressure if you take over at Tottenham.
09:15If you're a Spurs manager, the people that have been there, I'm one of them that have gone in and not made it and not done the job.
09:24But to go in with a trophy under your belt, those players have earned that last year.
09:29By hook or by crew, it doesn't matter.
09:31They've won a trophy.
09:32And they've got 17 years it's taken.
09:34You know, to win that trophy.
09:36So as a manager going in, that belief, football is all about belief.
09:39If you've got animal, you know, you've got people in there, you become a different animal as a player when you know you believe you can go and win again.
09:46And that's what winning a trophy does.
09:48It gives you that inner belief, that sort of competitive edge towards everyone.
09:53You look at everyone in the dressing room and you go, we're winning today.
09:56Even if we play poorly, we can still win.
09:58And that belief just gets going.
10:00Now, if you can win another trophy, be it just a one game,
10:02it's a one-off game to win a trophy, to be honest.
10:05And anything can happen.
10:06Yes, then they're not favourite Spurs.
10:08But if they perform well, nine out of ten, every player do the job tactically that I think that he's probably set out the team differently to what Angie would do.
10:16But there's no doubt about that.
10:18I think he's first thought, given everyone, we're going to be defensively spot on.
10:24And then we go from there.
10:26That's totally different to what Angie's philosophy has been.
10:28It's go and play, attack, play from the back, play through.
10:31And the players are going to have to adjust a little bit.
10:34But my word, I'd like to go in there now with a team that have won a trophy.
10:39They've got a belief about them.
10:41Well, let's take a look at the team that he's picked.
10:43And, you know, one thing that was always levelled against Antipas de Coglu was that he was very rigid in the way that he wanted to play.
10:49Whereas Thomas Frank, we've seen, he's always been quite flexible, actually, with his Brentford sides.
10:53And do you think we're going to see that today, even with the team that he's picked?
10:55Well, straight away, he's gone with the back three.
10:58It will turn into a back five.
10:59You'd expect Paris Saint-Germain to dominate the game.
11:02And he's mentioned it there, and Glenn's mentioned it as well.
11:04This is a one-off game.
11:05So this is a team and a formation that's set up to go, look, if we play Paris Saint-Germain ten times,
11:10don't expect us to beat him ten times.
11:12We're playing him once, and this is the group I'm going to go with.
11:15It's whether they sit too deep.
11:16They've got to pick their moments, when to attack, and obviously get their chances.
11:20And to mention about pressure and aggressive, there'll be moments when they do it.
11:23And Chelsea did it really well in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
11:26They picked their moments really well.
11:28But that's a team, hopefully, to get them with a trophy.
11:31And look, Thomas Frank has never managed at this particular level before,
11:34but he has such an impressive body of work.
11:36What do you think, in terms of a manager, that his particular qualities were,
11:39that Spurs just couldn't refuse?
11:42I think he touched on its structure.
11:44I think he wants to build a team that's flexible.
11:47Straight away, he's gone to such a high-profile game in his first big game, if you like.
11:51The season starts tonight.
11:53I think he likes structure.
11:55And those players will have clarity.
11:57When they go out there, they'll know exactly how he wants them to play.
12:00The only thing with a five, if they'll go into a five, as Karen says,
12:03I think the problem there, it's very hard to go and press a team at all.
12:07You can't get pressure unless you actually defend properly,
12:09and you swing into a four at times,
12:11so you get an extra player in the midfield, and then you can go and press.
12:14You've got the bodies.
12:15People that play with a five and go back,
12:17Man United had that problem last year.
12:19You can't get a really good press on them,
12:21unless you slide into a four, as I've just said.
12:24A lot of teams do that.
12:26City do it all the time.
12:28So there's a little bit of an adjustment there for Spurs.
12:30But this Paris Saint-Germain,
12:32you'd imagine they're going to be possession-based anyway.
12:35So it's probably the right tactics for the game.
12:38He knows the ball's going to be given.
12:39They're going to have the ball most of the time.
12:41And as Karen alluded to, it's what they do when they break.
12:45They'll be breaking, they'll be looking to hit them on the counter,
12:47and it's whether Richarlison and Kudos up front
12:49can give them that sort of base to go and play
12:52and let the midfield come and join them.
12:54Well, tactics is obviously one side of the job for Thomas Frank,
12:57but man management is the other.
12:58And he was very firm in his decision to not bring Yves Bissouma
13:01because of persistent lateness.
13:03What do you make of that decision
13:04to actually not even let him travel with the squad?
13:07It's just the rules, isn't it?
13:08You know, he's coming as a new manager.
13:09I think he mentioned, we'll give the players some love,
13:12but, you know, too many times I have to make a stance on it.
13:16And he's made the right call at the end of the day
13:17if you're late six, seven times.
13:19It's not good for the rest of the group.
13:20And as a manager, he mentioned about principles and foundations.
13:24That's a golden rule.
13:25And I think it's the right decision,
13:27the right decision for the group.
13:28If you allow that to happen,
13:30what else can the rest, you know,
13:31what else can happen off the back of that?
13:33So a good decision.
13:34I expect him to come back in eventually and be on time.
13:37He's got a good enough watch.
13:41I've seen it.
13:41When he goes down the tunnel every time,
13:43there's a great big watch there.
13:44Nice and shiny.
13:44Obviously, it doesn't tell all the time, frankly.
13:46Oh, dear.
13:47But no, on that point, as an ex-manager,
13:49he's done the right thing.
13:50But in this day and age,
13:52back in the day, when I was managing,
13:54you'd want to keep that quiet.
13:55You want to keep that sort of in-house, really.
13:58But in this day and age,
13:58that's the difference in management.
14:00You can't keep that quiet with social media and blah, blah, blah.
14:03But, you know, to keep that quiet and say,
14:04look, I'll talk to you when we get back at the training ground.
14:07Let's settle this out.
14:08But he's actually come out and said it.
14:10Some people think, well, that's not good.
14:12But in this day and age, you have to manage differently.
14:15I think as well.
14:15And I think that's the right thing to do.
14:17As well, Glenn, they've had a lot of injuries,
14:18haven't they, coming into this.
14:20So, as well, you probably do have to explain to the wider world,
14:23OK, this is why he's not in the squad today,
14:25because there are a lot of players out.
14:26And that's something I think Spurs fans will be keen to see tonight,
14:30who they're going to bring in in the window, maybe, after this.
14:32Well, well, well, well.
14:33That is the $5 million question, isn't it?
14:36We're going to be delving into that a bit later on as well.
14:38But on to tonight, though.
14:40Now, this is a first meeting between these two clubs and for Spurs.
14:43It is a first Super Cup appearance, too.
14:45Not, though, for the PSG boss, Luis Enrique.
14:47You can see he won the trophy as a player with Barcelona
14:50before doing so again as a manager in 2015.
14:53And we will be hearing from the PSG coach after the break.
15:02This programme is brought to you by Bet365.
15:07UEFA Super Cup official partner.
15:14So, I was at Villa Park, and I was doing a commentary on the radio.
15:18And the ball went across our commentary position.
15:21And the ball hit the wall.
15:23So, I can now see the ball coming back.
15:25So, when it got to about here, I pulled back.
15:28And the ball hit Sav, cleaning the face, right?
15:34Bop! He's gone, bang!
15:35Tears are streaming down.
15:37His nose was bleeding.
15:39And all this was while the game was on live.
15:41Batman.
15:45iego.

17:07I forgot this.
17:17Love you, Dad.

17:37Rebel, in the comfortable home.
17:41Ikea, the wonderful everyday.
17:55This program is brought to you by FedEx.
17:59UEFA SuperCup, official partner.
18:07Welcome back.
18:09Gianluigi Donnarumma was in the headlines, wasn't he?
18:11He was instrumental to PSG's success last season,
18:13but after being left out of the SuperCup squad,
18:15the Italian took to social media last night,
18:17saying he is unsure if he will play for the club again.
18:21Well, Lucas Chevalier was signed from Lille last week
18:24as the new number one, as Luis Enrique confirmed
18:27that looking for a different profile of goalkeeper
18:29was the reason behind the decision to drop Donnarumma.
18:32Well, the other big change at PSG post their Champions League success
18:35is the growing sense of expectation, of course,
18:38as Jules Breach has been finding out.
18:53For so long, the target for PSG was to win the Champions League
18:57and you've now done it.
18:59So, what's the goal now?
19:01Well, the goal now is starting the season in the best way.
19:04We are happy to be here and starting the season in that way.
19:13After such an outstanding treble winning season at PSG,
19:17how do you now manage the expectations?
19:19Well, it's going to be difficult.
19:21We are excited to try to win again,
19:23which is more difficult than winning the first time Champions League.
19:28Okay, excited to try to continue making history in Paris.
19:33And that means we need to win trophies. That's the key.
19:37How can you improve what's already an excellent score?
19:42I think you can always improve everything.
19:45When you have the amount of supporters that we have excited in that way
19:50and thinking that we can improve the last year, I think it's exciting
19:55and we're happy for having that.
19:58Yeah, well, it really was a remarkable season for PSG.
20:08Ali McCoyst and Darren Fletcher had front row seats for much of it.
20:12They're on duty for us again tonight, of course.
20:14And as always, no surprises here.
20:17They've been soaking up the Italian sunshine.
20:19Shock.
20:26The first thing you'd say, Ami, is I've been to worse places to start a season than this.
20:31Yes, it's absolutely outstanding. I can let you know it's magnificent.
20:35So Paris Saint-Germain, start of last season,
20:38not too many people thought they were going to win a Champions League.
20:41Myself included.
20:42And they finished looking like a generational European club side.
20:45Yeah.
20:46During that campaign, I think we saw them under pressure maybe,
20:49I think only once.
20:51And that was for maybe 20-25 minutes at Villa Park.
20:54And no Liverpool beat them, right, in Paris.
20:58But I've got to say, the Liverpool goalkeeper, Alisson, gave the performance of the season.
21:03They just looked to go from strength to strength.
21:07What a performance that was in the final.
21:09The big question now is, you're talking about a generational team.
21:12Are they? We'll find out.
21:15They've chosen to upgrade a goalkeeper.
21:17Yeah.
21:18Donnarumma, replaced by Chevalier from Lille.
21:20They say he's going to be the next great one.
21:23Yeah.
21:24So even that team that looked like it was perfect at the end of the season, Enrique and the group there, felt they could make it better.
21:30Yeah, absolutely.
21:31Well, you've got to.
21:32You can't stand still.
21:33You look at Liverpool, for example, as well.
21:35Well-deserved champions in the Premier League, and then they go in strength and strength in the summer.
21:39The one player that really looks as though he's coming into his own because of the responsibility he's got, Fletch, is Dembele.
21:45You know, there's no Neymar, no Messi.
21:47Well, he's the favourite for the Ballon d'Or.
21:48Well, deservedly so.
21:49Mbappe's away.
21:50There's an added responsibility on him now.
21:53And it looks as though last season he was just flourishing on it.
21:56Fantastic.
21:57Is the comparison based on one season to some of those great European club sides fair?
22:02I mean, they were so emphatic in the final.
22:045-0.
22:05Biggest winning margin ever in the Champions League final.
22:08So quite rightly people are saying, look, this could be the next great team.
22:11They were a breath of fresh air last season, Fletch.
22:14They were brilliant.
22:15I think they're one of the most exciting teams, new, fresh, young teams.
22:18I've seen in maybe decades, mate.
22:23Are they your favourites?
22:24Do you think they're still the team to beat?
22:25I mean, I've got a little sneaker for Barcelona.
22:27I've said that everywhere.
22:28I'm on.
22:29I'm on already.
22:30The PSG?
22:31Yeah.
22:32And do you know when I fancied them?
22:33And I know it's a crazy thing to do.
22:34When they were playing, we are the champions.
22:36When the referee blew that whistle for the end of the game against Inter Milan.
22:39Yeah.
22:40That's when I fancied them.
22:41But the fact is, I still think at this moment in time,
22:43PSG are third or fourth favourites to lift the trophy.
22:46Which I get and I understand that because of other teams' histories
22:49and other teams will improve as well.
22:51But I can't tell you how excited I want to see if this rich vein of form
22:55and the progress in this young side can continue.
22:58And if there's one man, by the way, if there's one man that can do it
23:00in terms of taking them there, it's Lewis and Lukey.
23:03Yeah.
23:04Can they handle the schedule?
23:05They've certainly got the players.
23:06We think they're the team to beat, don't we?
23:08We do.
23:09Let's see how it works out.
23:10Yeah, we certainly will see how it works out.
23:15But first of all, I want to know why no one invited us on holiday with those two.
23:19Because they look like they're having a great time.
23:21Let's talk about Donnarumma then.
23:23They're not coming back.
23:24No, no.
23:25They're not coming back.
23:26We'll never see them again.
23:27And actually, with a nice little segue here, PSG fans might not see Donnarumma again.
23:32And this is an interesting one because when you see how he played last season,
23:36he really was key in that starting 11, as he always is.
23:40Such a huge figure as well.
23:42And he's basically said himself that he doesn't have a future at the club.
23:47It's unlikely.
23:49Luis Enrique has come out and said that he's looking for a different type of keeper.
23:53Jason Burt is reporting in The Telegraph that Manchester City are now talking to Donnarumma.
23:57His agent is now saying that it is likely that he will end up in the Premier League,
24:01that they would be, that would be the right step for him.
24:05I guess, for us, that would be great to see, wouldn't it?
24:08That'd be fantastic.
24:09I think there'd be a queue around the block for him now.
24:12They know that he's available for, I think, they're talking about 30 million as well.
24:17He's 26 years of age, guys.
24:19As a goalkeeper, he's not even near his peak yet.
24:22I mean, I'm scratching my head why parents have not gone out everything to keep him.
24:27Obviously, the lad wants better football week in and week out.
24:32Because when he performs in the Champions League, he has pulled off some weldies,
24:37what we call weldies in goalkeeping terms.
24:40He's been absolutely brilliant.
24:41The bigger the game, the higher the profile, he's played better and better.
24:45He has had some iffy times, I've got to say, in the league, in Ligue 1.
24:49Perhaps that's mentality. He hasn't been switched on enough.
24:52And I think he wants maybe that challenge.
24:54But it seems like the stars have aligned for the club and for the player for him to move on.
24:58And my word, someone's going to get a fantastic goalkeeper.
25:01Well, there's a year left on his contract.
25:03And the player that they've signed in his place, Lucas Chevalier,
25:07the reason why they signed him, according to Luis Enrique, is that he has so many different attributes.
25:13So Donnarumma might be a brilliant shot stopper.
25:16But Chevalier is fantastic with his feet, for example.
25:19And that perhaps suits Luis Enrique's tactics.
25:21We've seen him being ruthless last season with getting rid of the likes of Mbappe.
25:26And now he's doing the same with Donnarumma.
25:28Is it a tactical decision?
25:29Well, I think the one year left on the contract obviously plays a big part into it.
25:33But it's ruthless, isn't it?
25:35You know, after Donnarumma and what she contributed.
25:37Like Glenn said, you know, single-handedly at times, keeping him in the competition.
25:41But look, this is the nature of football.
25:44And maybe the profile that they mentioned.
25:46A lot of people talking about the new goalkeeper's feet and playing out.
25:49And we speak about how goalkeepers now, they're not goalkeepers.
25:51They're outfield players.
25:53They're not the spare player anymore.
25:55They're expected to be everything with their feet.
25:57Their distribution, short, long range, everything.
26:00But I still think Donnarumma in terms of his shot stopping in the Champions League.
26:04Some of those clips that we saw, he kept them in it.
26:07And so it's a big ask for this young man coming in.
26:09He did great in the league last season.
26:11But this is a different beast now back at PSG.
26:14But whoever gets Donnarumma, it's a brilliant sign.
26:18And like Glenn said, he's 26 in the peak, international experience.
26:21He's got it all.
26:22It tells you a lot about Luis Enrique, doesn't it?
26:24And he spoke there about, you know, kind of always wanting to improve.
26:28This is a constant evolution for him.
26:30Last season was the first season without Mbappe.
26:33He created this incredibly, incredible tight squad that were able to sweep everyone aside.
26:39And this is possibly that next step of the ladder.
26:42Do you think you're not convinced, Glenn?
26:43I'm pretty sure if he sat down and had a beer with him and he opened his heart out,
26:48I think he would be saying, no, I want to keep Donnarumma.
26:50Donnarumma.
26:51I want to keep him here, put him on a four-year contract.
26:53As a manager, sometimes you think, well, if the lad wants to go, we've got to spin this a little bit.
26:59We've got to turn this round.
27:00Give the new goalkeeper some confidence as well.
27:03He'll feel 10 foot tall because, you know, the manager's behind me now.
27:07He's saying I'm better with my feet.
27:09But some of the saves that this goalkeeper has made to get them to the final
27:13and perform like he did in the final as well, for me, outweighs what you can do with the football.
27:20With your feet as a goalkeeper.
27:22You know, how many times are you going to pass out that goal?
27:25He's going to pass out.
27:26You're going to get 15 passes and he creates a goal because he used his feet to outweigh them saves that we've seen.
27:33A goalkeeper, for me, you judge him on his goalkeeping skills first.
27:37The feet come second.
27:38Yes, the feet are important nowadays in the modern game, but not as important.
27:42No one can sit here and tell me that to be a goalkeeper with better feet than Donnarumma, if you like, is going to pay dividends.
27:49If he wants to maintain this European Cup again, the Champions League again, and become something what City did, Liverpool have done over the years and Ajax and all these Bayern Munich.
27:59That's what they're looking to do now. They've won it once. They want to win it again.
28:02You'd have the best goalkeeper you can have. And I'm sure it's Donnarumma.
28:05Okay. Well, Luis Enrique doesn't think so. And the club have backed him as well. That could be an advantage for Spurs.
28:12And now they're fans, haven't they? What a run they had last season. They followed the club last season.
28:17They enjoyed a European adventure that took them as far south as Turkey, as far north as the Arctic Circle.
28:22But it all began in Hungary, and that is where this season's Champions League will conclude.
28:27And in a little over a couple of weeks' time, the Spurs fans will find out where they'll be travelling to next as we bring you the league phase.
28:33And before that, of course, there is silverware on the line. We'll be continuing our build-up to the Super Cup after the break.

31:42Welcome back.
31:51Look at this.
31:52May's Europa League win did elevate Heung-Min Son
31:55to legendary status at Spurs.
31:57But after 10 years in N17
31:59and 173 goals for the club,
32:01the Korean left last week for a new challenge in LA.
32:05So, with a new manager too,
32:07it's certainly the start of a new era for Spurs.
32:09It all gets underway in Udine tonight.
32:12We can head back there now with Jules,
32:14who's been joined pitch side by Ali.
32:16It is a big night for Tottenham.
32:20With more silverware on the line, Ali.
32:22First of all, I have to ask though,
32:24it is boiling.
32:25It's 32 degrees and it's already quite late in the evening.
32:28How's the Scotsman coping with this heat?
32:30Jules, not well.
32:31It's not something we're accustomed to.
32:33And I've got to be quite frank with you.
32:35I'm struggling a little bit,
32:36but if I'm struggling,
32:37I'm just wondering how the players will handle it.
32:39Because they're absolutely right to mention it.
32:40An opportunity for Spurs to lift another piece of silverware.
32:44They'll be up against it.
32:46A very, very good side.
32:47But I think the heat,
32:48hopefully it will calm down a little bit.
32:50I can feel it calming down,
32:51which will be important for the players, obviously.
32:53It's a new era at Tottenham.
32:55Harry Kane left in 2023.
32:57Son has now left as well.
32:58They were both club icons and global superstars.
33:01So, who now steps into the vacancy?
33:04Well, could it be Kudos?
33:05I mean, could it be somebody that's not playing tonight?
33:07Could it be a Bergval?
33:09Madison's obviously out.
33:10I feel sorry for him.
33:11Longer term injury.
33:13They'll certainly be looking for somebody to lift that mantle.
33:15Because you're talking about a couple of,
33:16particularly Spurs legends and heroes,
33:19and they're big boots to fill.
33:21So, I'll take a little bit of time.
33:24I can see Thomas Frank changing the style a little bit, Jules.
33:26I really can.
33:27I'm not sure that we're so attack-minded and fluent
33:30and entertaining in front of goal
33:32in terms of an attack-minded play.
33:34I think it could change a little bit.
33:36But out-and-out superstars.
33:37Could it be Kudos?
33:38We don't know.
33:39To be classed as a top team,
33:40do you have to have a global superstar in there?
33:43I don't think you do.
33:44I genuinely don't think you do.
33:46I look at teams like Bayern Munich, for example, straight away.
33:49And of course, they've had their superstars throughout their wonderful history, Jules.
33:53But generally speaking, the team ethic takes over.
33:56So, I don't think it's a necessity.
33:58But I think you've got to have one or the other.
34:00You've got to have either an out-and-out superstar
34:02or you've got to have a wonderful team.
34:04OK. Well, let's hear from the new Spurs manager Thomas Frank now
34:07because I got the chance to catch up with him yesterday
34:09and find out how it's all going so far
34:12since he took over as the manager just days after they won the Europa League.
34:16The time's come for Tottenham to stand on the top step once again.
34:21After 17 years, they finally win a trophy.
34:24And this rollercoaster season ends with glory in Bilbao
34:29for the first European trophy since 1984.
34:33Will that success be enough to see Ange Postacoglu still leading Spurs next season?
34:39Spurs have gone and got their man.
34:44Thomas Frank is officially Tottenham Hotspur's new head coach.
34:49It's going to be a fascinating, fascinating journey.
34:55Thomas, welcome to Italy.
34:56What a way to start your job as the new Tottenham manager.
35:00Excited to get going?
35:02Oh yeah, massively.
35:03You know, you're so much in it and there are so many things on you,
35:09you know, in terms of you're coming into your club,
35:12you want the processes going, you're in players, style of playing,
35:15the crew and all that.
35:16So it's been busy, busy, busy.
35:17Walked off the plane today.
35:19I think, why all those cameras?
35:21Ah, OK, now it's real stuff.
35:23So now we're starting.
35:24So that's good.
35:25Looking forward to it.
35:26Here's Mboumo.
35:27Clean through.
35:28How about that?
35:30Wow, what a finish.
35:32It is looking very good now for Thomas Frank's team.
35:36Does this already feel like a big step up in the short time you've had at Tottenham?
35:41Yeah, of course.
35:43But I think it's been so much head down, you know, planning training,
35:48making good trainings, games, doing a lot of things,
35:52which is what I've done for many, many years.
35:54And it is not too much different, if I'm honest.
35:57So I think it's all the fuss about big games like this that is a big step up.
36:03And of course, I'm massively looking forward to it.
36:05And we are ready.
36:06It's a moment to cherish for everyone associated with the club.
36:10The Europa League belongs to Tottenham in 2025.
36:14Tottenham Hotspur are winners once again.
36:17For such a long time, this club have been desperate to win a trophy again.
36:22They finally did that, winning the Europa League.
36:25So how do you use that as a springboard now for success?
36:29And what is the goal for you?
36:31I agree.
36:32I think it was wonderful to see the scenes after the Europa League final
36:37and also a few days later when they had the parade in Tottenham.
36:43So, yeah, fantastic.
36:45It was a long wait.
36:47And the big plan is that we're not going to wait as long again.
36:51We have a top opportunity tomorrow against probably the best team in the world right now.
36:57So that's a tough challenge.
36:59But we're ready for it.
37:01And the beautiful thing in football is if you have two teams that are competing,
37:04there is a good chance that you can compete in one game.
37:07And we will definitely be ready for that.
37:10And then it's to build a team that consistently can compete in all tournaments
37:15and, of course, ultimately in the end win.
37:17Yeah, really great to hear from Thomas Frank there.
37:21And look, one of his big jobs now is to oversee this very new look side,
37:26which includes a number of new players, some who have been on loan previously
37:30and now are here permanently with Tottenham for next season.
37:34There have been a couple of new signings.
37:36Let's talk about the main ones.
37:37Mohamed Kudus from West Ham and Jao Palina on loan from Bayern Munich.
37:42These are very important because these are two players with Premier League experience.
37:46They can hit the ground running.
37:48Let's talk about Mohamed Kudus first.
37:51I suppose what he gives Tottenham is a completely different dimension in attack, Karen.
37:55Yeah, I mean, look, he's obviously extremely talented, Kudus.
37:59We saw from Ajax and obviously went to West Ham.
38:02So we know he's quick, he's tricky, he's talented, he's got all the skill.
38:07The thing for me, though, if I was him, I'd be excited working with Thomas Frank.
38:12And I liken a player that Thomas Frank worked with, Mwemo, where Mwemo,
38:16he's got the stats from last season, you know, 20 goals and assists galore.
38:20I think Kudus has got to get to this level.
38:22And working with Thomas Frank, I think he can get his output to it.
38:25This is no problem dribbling, taking people on, positivity.
38:28But as any attacking player, and Glenn will know this,
38:31it's goals and assists that are the biggest one.
38:33And particularly with so many players that are injured at the moment,
38:36with Maddison and Kulicheski out and losing Son, as well as Solanke out.
38:41There's a big responsibility where the goals and creativity are going to come from.
38:45So this is a big opportunity for him tonight and for the first part of the season,
38:49because he's an extremely talented young man.
38:51No, his Premier League player attempted more dribbles than Kudus last season.
38:55Only Jeremy Doku was ahead of him.
38:57And that, I mean, Spurs did try in their formation last season,
39:00but the success rate wasn't very good.
39:02But Mohamed Kudus could be someone who could change that.
39:04Oh no, he's got such good talent, such quick feet.
39:08And you see his qualities there.
39:10The added ingredient for him as a player is the consistency.
39:14A lot of my West Ham fans, I've got quite a lot, have said to me,
39:18thank you for taking him, Glenn.
39:19So I don't know about that.
39:20The first year, I thought he was excellent.
39:22The second year, they're telling me he didn't do so well.
39:25But he looks like he's got a lot of potential, I've got to say.
39:28Sometimes dribblers, I look at dribblers, but I like what they do.
39:32And you would know this, Karen, as a dribbler, as a player yourself.
39:35I look at, can they dribble and play with their head up?
39:38That is the key for me.
39:40Even Ronaldo, when he was at Man United, had a problem.
39:42He had his head down, he would be dribbling.
39:44And Venistro used to give up.
39:46He used to get annoyed because he didn't know when the cross was coming in.
39:49And I think this is what I look at dribblers and think,
39:51yeah, they're fantastic.
39:52Great to go by people like we've just seen there.
39:54Can you also play with his head up?
39:56And that's the next progression for me, for him.
39:58And I think if he does, he could be a real asset for Tottenham.
40:01OK.
40:02And what about Jean Paulinho then?
40:03Because, obviously, he's someone who's played with Fulham.
40:06Spurs fans know him very well.
40:07And then, you know, there have been so many injuries in midfield for Tottenham.
40:10He possibly adds, if he can stay fit, hopefully, and get match fit as well.
40:14He can add some midfield steel, maybe, that Spurs need.
40:17A sort of a rugged player who can really do all the dirty work.
40:19He's a destroyer, a perfect off-the-ball player.
40:22But the thing for Paulinho is he's limited match minutes for the last 12 months.
40:27So if you can get the Paulinho that played at Fulham, you know, bit of a destroyer,
40:30breaks possession up, brilliant in stopping counter-attacks, fantastic.
40:34But the issue is he went to Bayern Munich in a team that want possession
40:38and the manager company didn't pick him.
40:40And so he's played very limited minutes.
40:43Is he going to be up to match speed?
40:44I think he played 45 minutes against Bayern last week.
40:47It will take him, I think, about four to five weeks to get up to match speed.
40:51Now, our Spurs, they need him quickly up to speed.
40:54But you notice this about him going to ground quite a lot though, Glenn.
40:57He does go to ground a hell of a lot.
40:59He's a dying breed at the moment in modern football.
41:01It's very difficult to dispossess and tackle nowadays.
41:04But he does go to ground.
41:06We're seeing some fantastic tackles here.
41:08And he can use the ball as well, by the way.
41:10Once he wins that ball, he can use it sensibly.
41:12He's not going to be a number 10 creator, but that's what he does.
41:15But he does go to ground a lot.
41:16The reason he goes to the ground, though, is also we could be showing about 10 tackles
41:21that he mistimes and he gets booked.
41:23So there's that balance.
41:24And I think at the moment, Karen's right.
41:27Until four or five weeks' time, we'll then be able to really judge him.
41:31Because if you mistime them tackles and he won't be up to that sharpness at the moment,
41:35then you're going to be in trouble booking-wise and then suspended very early in the season.
41:40So that's a bit of a dividing line.
41:42It's a very thin line he's got at work.
41:44But when he decides to intercept and go and make them tackles, there's no one better in modern football.
41:49That's an incredible tagline for him, Glenn, coming from you as well.
41:52I mean, we'll see how he gets on today.
41:54He's got no better team to pit his wits against, I should say, rather than PSG tonight.
42:01What a challenge for him.
42:02Will we get our coverage of the new Premier League season underway on Saturday?
42:06In case you didn't know, with Aston Villa against Newcastle, our coverage is live from 11am.

42:28OK, but for now, though, our focus is firmly on the UEFA Super Cup

43:18These pros weren't normal. Beth's techers aren't normal. Neither is 18 games at the same time.
43:25Normal can sling his hole. With all these competitions in one place, this is not normal.

47:45Welcome back everybody.
47:46Not long until kick-off in Udine as Spurs and PSG look to win a second European trophy in
48:00less than three months.
48:02It is also, of course, a big night for the new Spurs boss Thomas Frank.
48:05We can get a recap of the team news now with Jules.
48:08Yeah, I have to say, Reshman, it's always pretty cool to be out on the pitch, especially
48:13at a final.
48:14But for Thomas Frank's first match in charge, he hasn't had a fully fit team to pick from
48:20with James Madison just undergoing ACL surgery in the last couple of days and other
48:24long-term injuries to deal with as well.
48:27But he does have two of his new signings starting tonight.
48:30The Spurs team are just warming up behind me.
48:32Mohamed Kudus and Jao Pelinia both start and it's Richarlison that's leading the line
48:37with Dominic Solanke just fit enough tonight for the bench.
48:40As for PSG tonight, we get a first look at their new goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier, in
48:46a team that is full of superstars and as they proved in last season's Champions League,
48:51they're going to be a very tough team to beat, Reshman.
48:54Yeah, Jules, that they certainly are and it is a team full of superstars but also some
48:59breakout stars as well and arguably the top.
49:02Creme de la creme was Desiree Dua.
49:05I mean, he might be playing a little bit deeper in midfield tonight but when you look
49:08at players, there are a few that make you stand up and take notice and he was definitely
49:11one of them, wasn't he?
49:12He's got it all, Resh.
49:14He literally has it all and he's just turned 20 and obviously last season in the final,
49:20two goals and assists and got player of the match.
49:23For me, we were just speaking about Koudis and for someone like Dua, like I said, he's
49:28only 20.
49:29His decision making sets him apart because he's got everything.
49:32He can beat you in a 1v1 dribble.
49:34He makes the movements to sprint in behind if he has to stretch you.
49:37But it's his decision making at the right time for someone so young as well and that
49:42for me is the most impressive thing.
49:43I think he's got every element and I think he will keep going on and on and on and that's
49:48a sign of a good player.
49:49You don't do it one season, you continually do it and I think he will continually do it.
49:53I think he's got that flexibility as well.
49:55He can play on the right, which we've seen, he can play on the left.
49:58Tonight, I think we're going to see him just behind the front in a sort of a number
50:0110 position which actually could end up being his best position and he's got every attribute.
50:07For 20 years of age, he's got ability, I think he is one that can dribble and play
50:11with his head up, you know, and he sees pictures as well as beating people.
50:15There was a couple of balls there where you think he's going to shoot a goal.
50:18No, he's laying people in.
50:19He's assisting as well.
50:20So he's got good vision and he is one for the future.
50:23He's 20 years of age.
50:24He's going to just get better and better, particularly in this era, in this generation
50:28of if this team can dominate over the next two or three years like they would love to do.
50:34There's a lot of good clubs out there that will be having a say on that, I'm sure.
50:38But that's what Paris would want.
50:40Yeah, that's what Paris would want.
50:41What would Spurs want?
50:42They want to win today, don't they, as well?
50:43What a game we have in store.
50:45And we are almost ready to go in Italy with PSG hoping to become the first French club
50:49to win the UEFA Super Cup and add to their first ever Champions League crown.
50:53Or could we see an upset as Thomas Frank gets his Tottenham tenure up and running
50:57with the club's second European trophy after that long 17-year wait?
51:02Kick-off is next.
