00:01Welcome back. The new European campaign gets underway with the Super Cup.
00:05It's the first of 528 matches that TNT Sports will be bringing you this season
00:09from across all three UEFA competitions.
00:12On top of that, of course, we also have 52 Premier League matches,
00:15the Emirates FA Cup and the Adobe Women's FA Cup,
00:18plus live action from Serie A too.
00:20It is not normal.
00:22And speaking of not normal, what about our dynamic duo out there in Udinei,
00:26Ali McCoyster and Darren Fletcher?
00:28They are pitched and ready for this huge game tonight
00:32as the Champions League winners PSG take on the Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur
00:36for the honour of winning the UEFA Super Cup.
00:40It's hot in Italy. Let's see what happens out on the pitch.
00:43Over to you guys.
00:46Thanks, freshman. It is hot.
00:48It's a good job you're a two-hour flight away as well, isn't it, Ali, based on that.
00:51It's a bit early for these.
00:52Oh, that was a bit harsh.
00:54Probably factually correct, but a bit harsh.
00:56So here they come. We're all set here in Udinei for the traditional meeting
01:00of the Champions League winners and the Europa League winners.
01:03And the game is being played tonight for the 50th time
01:06and the Paris Saint-Germain Ultras are out in force.
01:10And there's Marquinhos carrying the Champions League trophy
01:13and Christian Romero with the Europa League trophy, silverware that secures the players' places
01:20in the history of their clubs.
01:23PSG here for the first time since 1997, having secured a record-setting win in the final
01:29against Inter Milan in Munich in May.
01:31It's the first-ever Super Cup appearance, though, for Tottenham,
01:35who are trying to win their second trophy in 12 weeks after 17 years without one.
01:47There's Luis Enrique, who secured a treble for the second time in his managerial career last season.
01:54And what a big night it is and a fresh start for the Tottenham manager, Thomas Frank.
02:00So the players lining up, we're at the home of Udinese in the Stadio Friuli,
02:11which holds around 25,000 fans.
02:14And I must say, there are more Tottenham fans in here tonight than those from Paris Saint-Germain.
02:19It's been a very hot day, it's not much cooler now, it's very, very close and muggy.
02:23And now we're ready for the European curtain raiser here on TNT Sports.
02:30Pretty simple, Ali, when you look at it, it's the best in the Europa League
02:49against the very best in the whole of Europe.
02:51Yeah, it's pretty straightforward, when you put it in that fletch,
02:54it's clearly a tournament, a cup that both teams will want to win.
03:00Tottenham, you know, last trophy before the Europa League against Manchester United
03:07was clearly 2008, so you mentioned there an opportunity to do it in two in 12 weeks,
03:12which would be remarkable.
03:13So it's obviously clearly wanting to win this one.
03:19So these are the teams and the European champions very attacking tonight,
03:22that's the first thing to say.
03:24Lucas Chevalier, signed from Lille, makes his debut in goal,
03:27with Gigi Donnarumma on his way out.
03:29Swell Neves suspended, Fabian Ruiz only a sub,
03:33the teenager Warren Zaire Emery starts in midfield with Vitinha.
03:37And Bradley Barkela plays in a fearsome front four
03:40that also includes Dembele, Kabar Escalia and Douay.
03:44And that's what they're playing for tonight, the UEFA Super Cup.
03:51There's the referee, João Pinheiro from Portugal,
03:55and he was the man who was fourth official
03:57at the Champions League final in Munich in May.
04:01And he's about to be joined by the two captains,
04:04Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain
04:06and Christian Romero, who's now the club captain at Tottenham,
04:09having taken over that role on a permanent basis
04:12from the now-departed Heung-Min Son.
04:15And at the start of a World Cup season,
04:34it's Argentina versus Brazil,
04:36and you wonder whether that's any kind of omen
04:39with the two captains down there.
04:45So while the Parisians are focused on the attack,
04:52there's a definite defensive look to Tottenham tonight.
04:54Injuries rule out, Kulosevsky, Maddison and Udoggi,
04:58Lateness Bissouma, Solanke and Johnston only subs,
05:02three centre-back start, including Kevin Danso,
05:05but we expect a back four, as you can see there
05:07with Miki van der Ven at left-back.
05:09Jed Spence is going to push on.
05:12Joel Polinia plays alongside Bentoncourt and Saar.
05:15The new signing, Mohamed Koudis and Richarlison,
05:17the only real recognised attackers.
05:20Thomas Frank's plan will soon become apparent,
05:23but it's very much at first glance
05:24the anti-ange for Tottenham tonight.
05:28Well, it's been a short summer for the European champions from Paris,
05:33who went all the way to the Club World Cup final against Chelsea,
05:36so managing minutes is still a priority for Luis Enrique,
05:40but the big hitters are here tonight.
05:43As for Tottenham, well, they've got a new manager and a new philosophy,
05:46a fresh start and a desire to be better in the Premier League,
05:49and of course, being back in the Champions League is huge for them.
05:53And with the Tottenham players huddling up in front of the Tottenham supporters,
05:56it's also the first time tonight that the teams have ever played against each other
06:00in a competitive fixture.
06:01That's the new PSG goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier.
06:05And just spare a thought tonight for Gigi Donnarumma,
06:08who at the moment I don't think can quite work out
06:11why he's suddenly become surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain.
06:15What about this then, Ali?
06:16The Tottenham team is fascinating, isn't it?
06:18We know what we're going to get from PSG,
06:20but the first real look at a Thomas Frank team and the way it's got it set up.
06:24Yeah, it's going to be interesting.
06:25The first thing you've got to say is you had Spence's starting position on the left-hand side.
06:30They'll have to defend well, that's stating the absolute obvious,
06:32but you look at the shape initially,
06:38PSG, you know, will be straightforward, 4-3-3.
06:40But I'll be examining, looking very closely, how Tottenham line up.
06:45The first thing you'd say, Ali, it looks like a back three, doesn't it?
06:48It does.
06:49Van der Ven, Romero in the middle, and then Danso on the right,
06:51then Spence and Toro as wing-backs.
06:54The interesting thing then is the two at the top of the pitch,
06:56Kouris and Richarlison.
06:57Playing through the middle.
06:59Well, we said that when we looked at it earlier on,
07:02it was the first thing we said,
07:03will they go with three centre-backs and will they play a 4-4-2?
07:06There's the first chance for Toro to try his luck from distance.
07:09No real concern there for the new man Chevalier.
07:14Interestingly, in the first half,
07:16the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper is right in front of the PSG Ultras.
07:21PSG and Perius from January onwards in the Champions League last season,
07:25from 2-0 down against Manchester City,
07:28they never looked back,
07:29culminating in the biggest win in a Champions League final
07:32for any club side.
07:34They're the favourites again going into the competition.
07:36The manner of how they did it last season
07:38is what really stuck in the mind.
07:40I'll tell you, that was really interesting.
07:42First goal kick to PSG there, Fletch, right?
07:45The Spurs lads pushed up,
07:47which they're well entitled to do,
07:48not allowing them to play out for the back.
07:50But in doing that,
07:51they leave themselves three against three,
07:54defensively.
07:55I think the interesting thing is,
07:57we saw the Chelsea method to beat Paris Saint-Germain
07:59in the Club World Cup final.
08:00It involved a lot of energy and a very high press.
08:02And we'll see whether Tottenham adopt those tactics tonight.
08:05If you've not seen Chevalier before, by the way,
08:08the goalkeeper has come in.
08:09He's magnificent with his feet.
08:10There is a feeling he's going to be France's number one
08:13in the not-too-distant future.
08:15And he is extremely highly rated,
08:17so he seems a good fit for an Enrique team,
08:19you'd say that.
08:20Bradley Barkal are trying to win the ball back again.
08:26Tottenham have it here with Petro Poro.
08:30And they'll get the throw in.
08:34Spurs in the Super Cup for the first time tonight.
08:36PSG bidding to become the first French club side to win it.
08:39And if Spurs do lift the trophy this evening,
08:41they'll become the seventh English club side
08:43to win a Super Cup.
08:45And I must say, there's a really good atmosphere
08:49inside the stadium.
08:50The majority of it right now
08:51being generated by the PSG supporters.
08:57Unsurprisingly, out of the Tottenham midfield lads,
09:01Fletch, Paulinho and Benton Coeur
09:03look the two that are sent with Saar.
09:05Start position at least ten yards in front of those two.
09:07Richarlison starting tonight.
09:13Dominic Solanke not quite ready.
09:14He's on the Tottenham bench, though.
09:17Still missing some key players, Spurs.
09:19Some for a long time,
09:20and others who may well be back
09:21in the not-too-distant future.
09:23And here's the first chance tonight
09:24for Kevin Danso to put the long throw in
09:26into the PSG box.
09:28And it didn't get cleared initially.
09:30And there was just a half-hearted appeal in there
09:32from Richarlison for a penalty.
09:34Just came off the top of Marquinhos' head.
09:36I'd say he was up, Erle Romero did well.
09:38Jumped early, posed him a problem.
09:41But why wouldn't you do that?
09:42Why wouldn't you try and unsettle him?
09:48Well, Guglielmo Vicario with the ball.
09:51There's Luis Enrique,
09:53who finally delivered the Champions League trophy to Paris
09:55in his second full season at the club.
09:58And now his team sit there at the top of the pile
10:01and they're the side that all of them are gunning for
10:03in the Champions League this season.
10:06Here's Hakimi,
10:12one of two excellent full-backs in the PSG team,
10:14now Vitinha.
10:16Well, that's the difference to Paris Saint-Germain tonight,
10:18the midfield.
10:19There's no Fabian Ruiz,
10:20he's on the bench,
10:21and Trao Neves,
10:22who was sent off in the Club World Cup final,
10:24he's suspended.
10:25And that's not really a race that Hakimi's going to win tonight
10:28against Jed Spence.
10:29No, but it was a good one.
10:30I enjoyed it.
10:31I think he got the first yard
10:35by Keoughi away there,
10:36but you're right,
10:38there's not too many who beat Jed Spence in a sprint.
10:40I saw the Tottenham manager Thomas Frank his first opportunity tonight
10:46to win a trophy.
10:46They were heavily beaten last week by Bayern Munich,
10:49so certainly wouldn't want a setback like that tonight,
10:52but of course it's early days
10:53for the new Spurs manager.
10:57And that's a foul on Toro
10:59by Nuno Mendes.
11:09Not sure there's an awful lot of contact there,
11:11he just lifts the undercarriage up, doesn't he?
11:13Doesn't he any chances?
11:14Tell you what, Ali,
11:15that's an important part of this Paris Saint-Germain team,
11:18the full-backs,
11:19they were involved in 35 goals
11:20across the various competitions last season,
11:23they both scored four each in the Champions League
11:25and they are the best tandem
11:27anywhere you look.
11:29And it's not really an argument, is it?
11:30No, I think the two best in the world really do.
11:33No less of a mistake,
11:34and I think you mentioned Champions League goals,
11:36I think Hakimi got a living all in.
11:38It's not bad for a right full-back, is it?
11:42Tottenham free kick taken by Vicario
11:44and hung up in there towards Kevin Danso.
11:50Almost broke in there for Romero,
11:53Vitini are blocking the cross.
12:03One interesting situation is that
12:05PNC have been back a week.
12:08The Club World Cup meant that the summer was short,
12:10the season was long,
12:11so Luis Enrique has tried to give them some time off,
12:14but in terms of where they'd be in their preparation,
12:16and let's not forget they start at the weekend as well,
12:19just like the Premier League teams do.
12:20They've not been back very long.
12:23Anything but.
12:23I was just looking at it there,
12:24you absolutely spot on there.
12:26They came back last Wednesday, I think it was.
12:29I mean, I understand that they get it
12:31because the players do need a break,
12:33and you're right, this is the first game,
12:35and then I think they're away at 0 at the weekend,
12:37so they're back into it very, very quickly.
12:39and they're down by Richarlison.
12:59Spurs have it now with Rodrigo Benson-Koer.
13:06Mickey van der Ven into the feet of Richarlison,
13:09and now it goes on
13:10to Mohamed Koudis.
13:12Listen, Fletcher was a first-time ball,
13:14Koudis had all around the corner there.
13:18Jetson Spencer made a brilliant run in the left,
13:21hand side,
13:22started off defensive,
13:23obviously made a break.
13:26Koudis didn't see him.
13:27Frustrated there, Spencer, get it.
13:35Marquini off to Dembele,
13:37who had such a fine individual season last season.
13:43Warren Zaire Emery, who's still a teenager,
13:46he runs into the challenge of the Tottenham captain,
13:48Romero.
13:49William Pachot,
14:03now Marquini off,
14:04the two odd men out in the Paris Saint-Germain team,
14:06the only two of the regular 11 that weren't nominated for the Ballon d'Or,
14:10on the shortlist.
14:12Two fantastic footballers, though,
14:14in their own right.
14:14Bradley Barclay.
14:18Just thinking they should hang their heads in shame.
14:23A little ball played in here to Zaire Emery.
14:25Good football, Kibar at Scalia.
14:27And he was
14:28unable to turn it in,
14:30but that's the first time we've seen this excellent team
14:32take it around like that.
14:33That's what they can do,
14:34just about everything's one touch.
14:36Barrett Scalia takes the touch with his left foot,
14:38he's probably looking initially to lay it off somewhere,
14:40he's way off balance in the finish,
14:41he's poor.
14:42But that's what they do.
14:44Play in little tight areas,
14:46a very, very comfortable dam.
14:48First and a half chance.
14:50A quick look at Vicario,
14:52we got told a wonderful story about him,
14:54didn't we,
14:54early today,
14:54that his uncle
14:55actually runs a bar in the city,
14:58and there is an Udine branch
15:00of the Tottenham supporters club
15:01that he runs out of there
15:03based on the fact that his nephew
15:04plays for Tottenham.
15:06Brilliant.
15:06And he played at a level himself,
15:08of course.
15:08He did.
15:09Played in the third tier
15:10here in Italy,
15:12and he had a load of Tottenham fans in last night
15:13and the night before,
15:14enjoying his hospitality.
15:15Barcala for Paris Saint-Germain
15:20and he took it well.
15:24He's managed to draw a crowd
15:25but that doesn't tend to faze him.
15:28No, he fancied that, didn't he?
15:35It was interesting listening to Glenn and Karen
15:37before the game
15:37talking about the fact that
15:38Svald Polinia goes to ground,
15:40he's gone to ground there
15:41and he's got a kick in the face
15:42in the process.
15:45He just catches his face,
15:51doesn't he, I think?
15:56He's a little bit unlucky there,
15:57he doesn't get by the three of them.
15:58It's interesting there as well
16:14because I'm just looking at our left-hand sideflash
16:16and Jared Spence,
16:18he won't go
16:19until he knows
16:20Mickey Van De Ven
16:21and come over and take the left-hand sideflash.
16:22I'll get my chest out there in a moment.
16:28I think it's Richarlison.
16:33That's the other side of Marquinhos
16:35but then can't keep the ball in.
16:38Referee spotted it there
16:39rather than the assistant.
16:40I mean, there is pace in this
16:41Tottenham team to deal with
16:43the Paris Saint-Germain attacks.
16:45What do you think about Van De Ven and Spence?
16:47They've got quick players in the team.
16:49Of course they have.
16:49Two of the quickest, in fact.
16:52See what I'm saying there?
16:53Now, look.
16:55They're leaving a 3v3.
16:58Now, that's what you do
17:00to play against it.
17:01However, Dembele's got to come short quicker.
17:05Could pose a wee problem from Tottenham, that.
17:06I get them pushing up
17:15and making them force them
17:16into the kick, darn.
17:17But it's not without its risks.
17:20Here's Hakimi.
17:22I haven't really seen the two PSG fullbacks
17:24get forward too much
17:25in the early stages.
17:27Kibarat Scalier out there
17:28on that side.
17:29Here's Vitinha.
17:32Tasho
17:32onto Nuno Mendes.
17:34Good work in there by Sartre.
17:43And that's good work as well by Koudis
17:45to dispossess Mendes
17:47and now he can set Tottenham.
17:48Hotspur are on their way.
17:52Toro.
17:57Koudis swings in an inviting cross
17:59towards Richarlison
18:00who did superbly well
18:01to keep it in.
18:02Didn't he just?
18:02In it goes now
18:05from Richarlison
18:05but he's ballooned that one
18:07but encouraging
18:08to see Koudis
18:09get involved down this side.
18:10He's a big player
18:11for Tottenham this season.
18:12Yeah, he certainly is.
18:14And a willing runner
18:15going by him there
18:15and Pedro Poro
18:16but he caught back inside
18:17and played a good ball
18:18in the back post area.
18:20The one coming back
18:21the way he clearly wasn't
18:21of the same quality.
18:24I know you've not got
18:24a crystal ball
18:25but do you think
18:26this shape is for tonight
18:27or do you think
18:28this might well be the way
18:29the Spurs are going to play
18:30this season under Thomas Frank
18:31with a back three?
18:32I think they might, you know.
18:35I really do.
18:38You never know.
18:39The one thing he is capable of
18:40he's more than capable
18:41of changing it.
18:44Never mind for a game,
18:45during a game.
18:46One thing we can say
18:53with confidence
18:53is that the defensive line
18:54is not quite so high
18:56in fact it's nowhere near as high
18:57and it's a lot more practical
18:58in terms of
18:59the way they're set up.
19:00Right now they're
19:01straight into the five.
19:03With Poro taking the wide man
19:04and Spence taking the wide man.
19:06But what that does
19:07it leaves gaps in front of them now
19:09is where the middle three
19:10have to be as tight
19:11as they possibly can.
19:13But PSG will get possession
19:14of the ball
19:15when Tottenham drop back
19:17into a five
19:17it's only natural.
19:21Hakimi forward down the right
19:23supported here by Zaire Emery
19:24and then Vittinia.
19:25Ousmane Dembele
19:35now Bradley Barcala
19:38now Kibica Kovar at Scalia
19:48Betini's ball
19:57and defended well
19:59in there for Tottenham
19:59by Fetro Poro.
20:04This will be the problem
20:05though for Spurs Alli
20:06if they get penned in
20:07and can't get out.
20:08Well that's the problem
20:09though Halfwich
20:10I don't know if I explained it
20:12well there
20:12when they go back to the five
20:13it clearly leaves a lot more space
20:15in the middle of the park.
20:17PSG have got numbers there
20:18so they're going to control
20:20possession of the ball
20:20but up to now
20:22you know they haven't been
20:24a real threat with it.
20:26That can change
20:26obviously.
20:30Kibara Scalia
20:30one of the people
20:31who can change it
20:32but Bentoncourt did well
20:33there for Spurs
20:33and now he finds
20:34Richarlison
20:35and Bentoncourt
20:37the player
20:37who's gone up there
20:38to support him.
20:41Natasha with a foot in
20:43and the offside flag up
20:45against Spurs.
20:48That's the challenge
20:49though Ali
20:49if you're going to defend
20:50deep and play at a five
20:51and it does break like that
20:52you've got to get people
20:53up with Richarlison.
20:55Without a doubt
20:56I'm just having a quick look
20:57at that
20:57I'm not sure that pass
20:59actually come off
21:00the Charleston
21:00if you come off
21:01the defender
21:02clearly the Tottenham players
21:03are onside
21:03but anyway
21:04no you're right
21:04and it makes it
21:06a little bit more difficult
21:06when they are back
21:07in a five
21:08for players to get
21:09forward to support.
21:10the majority of the time
21:17the Champions League
21:18winners come out
21:18on top in this game
21:19in fact for the last
21:20six years
21:21the winners of the big one
21:21have gone on
21:23to win this one
21:23and Barker
21:24are running through
21:25good challenge
21:25by Saar
21:26it really was
21:27it really was
21:28a good challenge
21:29haven't seen much of
21:43do I have we
21:44in the opening
21:44quarter of an hour
21:45quiet
21:46there he is
21:47on the ball now
21:47and
21:48Parrot Scalia
21:49generally speaking
21:51you know
21:54the top players
21:54in forward areas
21:55have been quiet
21:56after 15 minutes
21:58Kudis with the flick on
22:28he played in 24 games
22:35last season
22:35Richarlison
22:37seven of them
22:37in the Europa League
22:39he was just offside
22:40from the throw-in
22:41a bit of talk
22:44over the summer
22:45as to whether
22:45he'd be a Tottenham player
22:46when the window shuts
22:47but he's starting tonight
22:48there's a lot in there
22:49for Richarlison
22:49he's a good player
22:52for them when he's fit
22:53absolutely spot on
22:55whether he's going to get
22:5725-30 a season
22:59that's a different
22:59discussion
23:00just looking at the goals
23:04what did they get last year
23:05Solanke
23:05got a few
23:07obviously Brennan Johnson
23:08certainly got a few
23:09he can probably consider himself
23:10a little bit unlucky
23:11not to start
23:11yeah
23:12on the subject of goals
23:13PSG scored 168
23:15in all competitions
23:17168
23:18168
23:19yeah
23:19Dominic Dembele was chocked with 35
23:22Jed Spence for Tottenham
23:29now Mickey van der Ven
23:31we're expecting water breaks
23:42aren't we
23:43in this first half
23:45and in the second half
23:45as well
23:46no surprise
23:46because the temperature's
23:47not dropped
23:48that much
23:50since this afternoon
23:51it's not quite as hot
23:52but it's a lot closer
23:53than it was earlier today
23:55as darkness
23:56has descended
23:57on the Oudinay
23:59straight forward
24:04Fikek there
24:05doing a little bit late
24:06with the challenge
24:07still got the baby face
24:16hasn't he Chabalier
24:17still only 21
24:18so Pedro Poro
24:34and Mohamed Koudis
24:36over the top
24:37of the free kick
24:38that's headed over the bar
24:46Tacho took a little
24:50knock in the process
24:51as he was trying to attack
24:52it for PSG
24:53we've mentioned it before
24:54the one thing about Poro
24:55he has got a bit of quality
24:56we've seen it in terms
24:58of his deliveries
24:58into the box
24:59and clearly Tottenham
25:01we saw
25:02earlier on there
25:04with a long throw
25:04they're more than happy
25:06and well within the right
25:08to put as much pressure
25:09on the PSG defence
25:11as possible
25:12I'm assuming
25:18what's going on there
25:19there's a lot of
25:19two of them throwing
25:20behind the goal
25:21TSG supporters
25:23my initial thought
25:26was it was some kind
25:27of variation
25:28of the Toznan
25:29but I'm not quite sure
25:30it's the European champions
25:44who have had the majority
25:45of the ball
25:46to this stage
25:46but as yet
25:48neither Vicario
25:49nor Chevalier
25:50are being tested
25:53and that was intercepted
26:08by Poro
26:09I must say
26:10the two wingbacks
26:11at Tottenham
26:11have started well
26:12yeah they have
26:23it's a good hold up
26:27play as well
26:27from Richarlison
26:28excellent
26:28excellent it was
26:30here's Van de Vent
26:33his speed then
26:36teasing up for Jed Spence
26:38he's got Poro
26:38making the run
26:39into the box
26:40on the other side
26:40as well
26:41it was a great ball
26:43could have done
26:43with just another
26:44half yard on it
26:45Sar with the cross
26:46and that's going to go
26:48right the way through
26:49that was a lovely ball
26:51inside Hakimi
26:51but the weight of the
26:52pass was nearly
26:54spot on
26:55because just as I said
26:56another half yard
26:57I think Spence is on
26:58to that
26:58could potentially
26:59get a penalty
26:59anything could have
27:00happened there
27:00interesting there though
27:02Ali
27:02when it was Spence
27:03running down the left
27:04the furthest man
27:05forward in the box
27:05was the other wingback
27:06wasn't it
27:06Petro Poro
27:07given away here
27:10to Bentoncourt
27:11it's an interesting
27:21tactic isn't it
27:21Chelsea did it really
27:22well they pressed them
27:23in the World Club Cup
27:24final and it worked
27:25if it doesn't work
27:27and you leave the
27:27space behind
27:28they're the best team
27:29in Europe
27:30aren't they
27:30making you pay
27:32so it's risk and reward
27:33if you go down that
27:34route
27:34that's exactly what I was
27:35that's exactly what I was
28:05Vitinho, one of the players who played in all of the Champions League matches last season.
28:11Dembele looking to try and get Bradley Barkela away.
28:17Now Dewey, excellent first touch.
28:20I actually can't believe how deep Dembele's been.
28:24That's his second time in the last five minutes he's actually picked the ball up in his own half.
28:28With the Spurs back four or back five at that time, they're probably going to be 20-25 yards from their own goal.
28:40That's a good sign.
28:42From Tottenham's point of view.
28:44Hakimi on to Kavar at Scalier.
28:58Dembele losing out there to Richarlison.
29:00Now off goes Mohamed Koudis.
29:05Richarlison's going to take it early.
29:07And it was a really good try from Richarlison.
29:11And the first save tonight for the new goalkeeper Chevalier.
29:15But that was the right thing for Richarlison to do.
29:17It's amazing. It's a brilliant move.
29:19Very slack again from Dembele.
29:20And it's too deep.
29:21He's absolutely too deep for PSG's point of view.
29:23Brilliant from Koudis.
29:24He just waits for Richarlison running across.
29:26A fantastic run.
29:27Do you know something?
29:28I thought he was going to hit it a split second earlier.
29:31And lift it over the goalkeeper.
29:33But he waits for that split second.
29:36He forces the goalkeeper into a great save.
29:38Off a deflection.
29:38Yeah, slight deflection.
29:40Made it spin and loop a little bit more.
29:44Confidence though from Richarlison to take the shot as early as he did.
29:49In goes the Tottenham corner.
29:51And coming on to that was Rodrigo Bentoncourt.
29:54See, they're doing that Tottenham, they're playing it in that back post area, Fletch.
29:59And they're leaving it for a late runner to come in.
30:02Bandeven effectively is holding off a defender.
30:05And he probably should do better with the header.
30:07It's a free header.
30:13Started okay, Spurs first quarter.
30:15Yeah, 24 minutes gone.
30:16I know that PSG have had a lot of the ball, but Vicario's not seen it really.
30:20But they're going to have a lot of the ball down.
30:21I'll mention again, particularly when they drop into that back five.
30:25And PSG are effectively playing without a number nine, because Dembele's so deep.
30:29So they've got numbers there, but they're going to have all the ball they want.
30:33Because at this moment in time, they're not hurting Tottenham.
30:34So I think it's time for the water break, the refreshments.
30:47It gives us time to tell you about the game we've got for you on Saturday, 11 o'clock we start.
30:58Aston Villa against Newcastle as the Premier League starts.
31:02And we're really excited about it.
31:04TNT Sports 1 for that game.
31:07The following week, you can see Manchester City against Tottenham, which is always a great fixture.
31:12Saturday, the 23rd of August, and that's from 11 o'clock as well.
31:16And the Champions League playoffs.
31:18We've got live coverage of the Champions League playoffs from the 19th to the 27th of August,
31:23which will include Celtic and Rangers.
31:26The winners will all make it into the league phase, which provided so much drama for us last season.
31:32So that's all to come, Premier League and then the Champions League playoffs.
31:37And I know that the man alongside me has a vested interest in one of those teams in the Champions League playoffs.
31:42We endured a very nervy journey from the airport to the hotel last night,
31:46hoping that Victoria Pilsen didn't score any more goals.
31:49Is that correct?
31:50That's 100% correct.
31:52And I'm officially giving the manner of match to Jack Butland if he's listening.
31:56Well done, Jack. Great performance, mate.
31:58Saved me a lot of sweat in that journey.
32:00I was just looking at that shot again from Richarlison.
32:03The deflection, I think, believe it or not, I know it's a good save.
32:07The deflection actually helped PSG, I think, because it's going right across the goalkeeper.
32:11It looked a good strike.
32:12But anyway, look at Schiavallia dead well.
32:30It's a Tottenham team that started well tonight.
32:32Their pre-seasons included a win against Arsenal in Hong Kong, a draw against Newcastle in South Korea,
32:39and then a humbling 4-0 defeat against Bayern Munich and Harry Kane last week.
32:44Tonight they've been nice and compact in this defensive shape,
32:48and they've not allowed the European champions any attacking success in the opening 26 and a half minutes here in Oudanay.
32:56Well, I mean, this situation's almost as good as a corner, isn't it, Danso's throw?
33:09He gets a lot of distance on it.
33:13And that's what you're going to do, put it right in top of them.
33:15Look at the height you've got in that Tottenham side.
33:19Dan defends in the middle of it all.
33:21It was headed away by Hakimi for PSG.
33:23Here's Danso.
33:27Attack there by Marquinhos.
33:41Pedro Poro looking to get in behind Nuno Mendes, the assistant right there,
33:44but happy for them to be physical with each other.
33:48He did well initially, Poro, but he were livid because he got out-muscled at the end.
33:51It's just a little example of how comfortable Chevalier is with the ball,
33:56because he was quite happy to be patient, wasn't he, before he poofed it away.
34:00You see what Enrique's done tonight, based on the fact that he's not got to Al Neves,
34:23who's suspended, but he's left Ruiz on the bench.
34:27I just wonder the way Spurs are playing, whether those three in midfield
34:30might just be a better way to break Tottenham down,
34:33because they're so good with the short passes around the penalty area.
34:37I think they're spot on.
34:38Having said that, that's not a bad route to Bradley Barkalow down this side,
34:41and Danso's got ground to make up.
34:43Bradley Barkalow running in here,
34:44and that's good defending in the middle of attack, Sarr.
34:47He did exceptionally well to get back across.
34:52I've got to say, I just think Danso showed him too much room here.
34:57He's got to get back in, he allows him outside in there, look, watch this.
35:02Don't you do well enough defensively, but Sarr does?
35:06Helps him out big time.
35:07So, Marquinhos and Pasho, the two centre-backs of PSG,
35:19have gone forward for the corner.
35:25First one tonight for Paris Saint-Germain.
35:34It's taken by Bichinia.
35:37Strange choice of delivery from a player who often gets his decisions spot on.
35:43Yeah.
35:46I think they're very kind there.
35:51Michalasen's done well again,
35:52and now Spurs can attack down this side through Porro.
35:58He's not happy again, Chad Spence.
36:00Again, out on that left-hand side.
36:02And you made a good point earlier on,
36:03it was the same situation there,
36:05the two Tottenham players that were furthest up the park were Porro and Spence,
36:09and Spence wanted to switch a play,
36:11and probably should have got another one.
36:12He fancies it out there against Hakimi, you know.
36:14He played with the 0-8 duo at Rennes, didn't he, Jed Spence,
36:23so he knows him really well.
36:26He became the spokesman, really, for Due last season,
36:28telling everybody how good he was,
36:30what he really burst onto the scene at PSG.
36:32Spence is needed tonight because Destiny Udoge is out with a knee problem,
36:40as is Kulusevsky.
36:45Thomas Frank proving a point as well by leaving Bissouma at home because he was late.
36:50William Pachon.
37:01William Pachon.
37:07Due.
37:10Foul by Richarlison.
37:11You can see the PSG player in possession having to really think about it.
37:20They're not able at this stage to really flow, are they?
37:24Showing off me a loop, too.
37:32Hakimi trying to get forward here down the right.
37:35Spurs have got more numbers in the middle though than PSG,
37:38and that's sloppy straight to Pap-Sar.
37:41Wasn't it just?
37:42That was equally sloppy right now.
37:51Desiree Due, Alcabar at Scalia.
37:55Zaire Emery treading on the ball,
37:57Tottenham now with a chance to counter,
37:59and they've got Pedro Poros storming forward down the right,
38:02if he looks that way, here he is.
38:06And this time they do look for the switch,
38:08into Koudis,
38:09and Spence has gone rampaging forward,
38:12and he's got the better of Hakimi,
38:13but only pulled it back to Vitinha.
38:17That was excellent from Spence, it really was,
38:19because it looked like a lost cause,
38:20and he made it anything but that with a tackle.
38:23Kept possession of the ball.
38:26But again, two wide boys,
38:28very, very good.
38:29Toro on the right, Spence on the left.
38:31Toro doesn't need much room to get the cross in,
38:35that's a poor clearance,
38:36it's a great block though by Marquinhos to make up for it.
38:39That was hit with a lot of power from Koudis.
38:41It really was, Fletch,
38:43but I thought for all intents and purposes,
38:45he was just going to drag it back onto his left foot.
38:47He's got the ability to do that,
38:49the block was flying in.
38:51And I just thought to myself,
38:52bring it back onto your left foot.
39:04This man Dembele
39:05finding Zaire Emery,
39:07and then on it goes to Khabar and Scalian.
39:11They're doubling up on the two wingers, aren't they, as well,
39:14when they get the ball,
39:14it's Pelinia out there this time helping Spence.
39:17Doing it exceptionally well.
39:22Douay,
39:27Hakimi.
39:28Look at Dembele's position right now,
39:30he's not even in the picture,
39:31he's just coming in there now on the left-hand side.
39:32Douay's crossed and that's held onto by Vicario.
39:37I'm amazed that somebody that scores 35 goals in one season
39:39takes up that position.
39:41Amazed.
39:47I must say, Ali,
39:48based on the 33 minutes we've seen,
39:50I thought the Champions League,
39:51I expected the Champions League final
39:53to be more like this than what we saw.
39:55I thought Inter Milan would slow them down like this,
39:57but I mean,
39:57they were just blown away.
40:00They're not an easy team to shackle,
40:01but Tottenham are doing it really well.
40:03You have got to factor in as well,
40:05the point we made really early,
40:06they've only been back a week,
40:07so they are going to be rusty.
40:08Of course you have.
40:11What I will predict though,
40:13if this is the formation that Tottenham are going to play
40:15for the rest of the season,
40:17I can almost guarantee you
40:19that they won't have the fifth worst defensive record
40:21in the Premier League.
40:23Spurs hard to beat,
40:25who would have thought of it?
40:29Here's Kavara and Scaliot.
40:34It certainly is a look
40:35that they've gone from one extreme to the other.
40:38It really does.
40:38Thomas Frank's been ever-present
40:49on the edge of the Tottenham technical area.
40:52Enrique's happy to take a seat.
40:54Here's Dembele.
40:57Important footing
40:57for Spurs by João Pellini,
41:00and that's what he's been brought in
41:01from Bayern Munich to do.
41:02Richarlison thought he was going to get the foul,
41:04but he was wrong.
41:06And now Dembele's got it for PSG,
41:07but Spence has got the speed on that side
41:09to deal with Akemi.
41:28And it's Kavara at Scaliot.
41:29That's it through the legs of Spence,
41:33and then Dembele
41:34snatches at the first chance
41:37that he's had tonight.
41:38First kind of wee half chance.
41:40One thing I will say,
41:41I don't think there's any doubt in my mind,
41:43he definitely tries to play it through
41:45of Spence's legs.
41:47This is back to Dembele
41:48just a little bit quick.
41:49There's that chance again.
41:58Just come back onto your left foot.
42:01I mean, Marquinhos does well.
42:03But I would have expected him
42:04just to come back onto that left foot.
42:07Give himself a little bit more space.
42:08William Pacho was in there quickly.
42:12He was one of the revelations last season.
42:14One of the breakout players in Europe.
42:16He was very, very good at centre-back.
42:19The Paris Saint-Germain.
42:20There's Zaire Emery
42:21running stride for stride
42:23with Rodrigo Bentoncourt.
42:24The Paris Saint-Germain.
42:54Desire, Dewey.
42:58Well, Ashraf, Hakimi.
43:06Vitinha.
43:08Dewey.
43:12Kovar and Scalia can have a go at Spence again.
43:15Danso said it's not the best.
43:17Here's Zaire Emery.
43:19Hakimi.
43:21And that's blocked over there by Srao Fellinia.
43:23He's got to let that through.
43:25He's a poor header defensively.
43:29Nearly posed himself
43:30and his team a problem.
43:32Communication has to be better.
43:33I don't know whether it's Poros
43:34you'll be talking to.
43:35I'll just let it through you.
43:36It's a rare occurrence
43:48when they go 37 minutes
43:50without having a shot on target,
43:51Paris Saint-Germain.
43:52Yeah.
43:52I won back well by Bentoncourt on Nuno Mendes.
44:00It was Petro Poro.
44:03I like that.
44:05I don't mind that at all.
44:08Yeah, he's earned it.
44:09Brilliant.
44:09Don't mind that at all
44:13because Mendes was favourite initially.
44:18They refuse to give up in it.
44:19Look.
44:20Good shoulder there.
44:21Good strength.
44:22Backs into him.
44:23Protects it.
44:24Gets his free kick.
44:25I'll tell you what, Ali,
44:29if they get the best of Mohamed Koudis
44:31for 55 million quid,
44:33he's only 25.
44:34I mean, they're going to have some player
44:36on their hands.
44:37I mean, the Koudis that we saw
44:38in his first season at West Ham
44:39looked like a superstar in waiting.
44:42Then last season it dropped off a little bit,
44:43but he started this game really well tonight.
44:46He can play, don't worry about that.
44:55Spurs free kick taken by Vicario towards Romero,
45:00headed in towards van der Ven.
45:02And the chance, oh, he saved it,
45:03the keeper, but it's in on the follow-up.
45:09And Miki van der Ven fires Tom and Hotspur
45:12in front in the Super Cup final.
45:15And the way they played in the first half,
45:17they deserve it.
45:23Pretty straightforward goal.
45:25Asked him a question again.
45:27I mentioned to you before,
45:28physicality, long throws, free kicks,
45:31that's all it is.
45:32This is an excellent header.
45:34It's a goalkeeper actually taking
45:35the free kick.
45:38That's a header.
45:39Romero.
45:41Oh, it's brilliant.
45:42Bentancur does really well.
45:45And it's finished with a centre-forward.
45:46It really is.
45:49That's a great,
45:49that's a brilliant save.
45:50I'll tell you right now,
45:51that is a brilliant save.
45:54Bentancur really reacts to it.
45:56Brilliant save,
45:57but what about the centre-back here?
45:59On the move,
46:00like a centre-forward,
46:02great finish,
46:03and deserved.
46:05And look at him down there,
46:06Thomas Frank.
46:07And the wide smile on the face of Mickey Van Der Vent,
46:12who had a stop-start season,
46:14didn't he?
46:15Only played 22 times for Tottenham,
46:17he had a real problem with injuries last season,
46:19hamstring injuries in the main.
46:21But he's turned up tonight in this new-look Spurs,
46:24they're just checking the goal,
46:25Thiago Martins, the video assistant,
46:27he's having a look at it.
46:28I must say,
46:29I didn't see anything initially that would concern me.
46:31The check is over and the goal's down.
46:32Yeah,
46:33the only thing was the initial free kick from the goalkeeper,
46:35Vacario.
46:36But do you know something,
46:37getting back to the goal fledge,
46:38what are Tottenham doing really,
46:40really well,
46:41obviously defensively,
46:42they've been excellent,
46:43in the opening 40 minutes.
46:45But when given a chance,
46:48they're trying to give PSG a physical problem.
46:51And it's working.
46:52Mentioned the long throw,
46:54mentioned the diagonal free kick,
46:56free kicks into the box.
46:58What are they not,
46:59what are PSG very good at?
47:01Passing the ball,
47:02a little intricate passing,
47:03what are they not so good at?
47:04A little bit of physicality defending,
47:06and put under pressure.
47:07Chelsea did it,
47:08Villa did it,
47:09Tottenham have done it in the first half.
47:11Well, there's Charles Pellinia,
47:12and he played a big hand in the goal,
47:14it was his shot that was tipped on to the bar,
47:16by Chevalier,
47:17and then the man who reacted quickest,
47:18was Mickey Van Der Ben,
47:19and it's his name that's been being sung,
47:21by the Tottenham supporters.
47:23Think about the impact he had,
47:24in the Europa League final,
47:26that clearance off the line,
47:27was just about as important,
47:28as Brennan Johnson's goal.
47:29It certainly was,
47:30it really, really was.
47:34You're right,
47:35I mean I think it's bent to a cook,
47:36goes up initially for the header,
47:38ball bolts to Pellinia,
47:39it's a brilliant save,
47:41it really is,
47:42he gets a touch on the crossbar,
47:43and Mickey Van Der Ben's on the move.
47:50And the Spurs fans are thinking,
47:51we know what we are,
47:52champions of Europe,
47:53and they're beating the European champions,
47:55the Champions League winners,
47:57here in Oudanay tonight.
47:59Here's Nuno Mendes,
48:12three and a half minutes to go,
48:13plus stoppage time,
48:15in this first half,
48:16and Bradley Barker gets away,
48:18from Pedro Porro down this side,
48:19PSG looking for the response,
48:21but both Pellinia and Danso,
48:23got across there sharply,
48:24for Spurs,
48:25just on that goal for Mickey Van Der Ben,
48:26the first one he scored for Tottenham for 15 months.
48:29There you are.
48:31There you are.
48:33That's exactly what Spurs have done really well,
48:35first half,
48:35even when Barker gets by,
48:37Porro,
48:37the cover come across from Danso,
48:39they've teamed up really, really well.
48:43Vicario defending the end,
48:45where the Spurs supporters are,
48:47happy at the moment with the scoreline,
48:49and Dewey with the shot,
48:50took a deflection,
48:50that spins behind for another one.
49:02We sat and had lunch earlier today,
49:04and the restaurant we were at,
49:05was predominantly a Tottenham restaurant.
49:07It certainly was.
49:08It's fair to say,
49:09they were nervous in general,
49:10they were looking forward to it,
49:11but they were nervous,
49:12but they're going to be happy now,
49:13aren't they?
49:14So they should be.
49:16A little flick back by Dewey,
49:17that might not have been the right decision,
49:19it didn't really give Dembele a chance.
49:22They were a little bit nervous,
49:23one or two,
49:23the Tottenham fans,
49:24but there was no shortage of optimism,
49:26as well as you would expect them.
49:29I think the optimism got higher,
49:31the longer the afternoon went on,
49:32for obvious reasons,
49:33away from home with the football.
49:39I mean,
49:39he's not seen the ball,
49:40has he, Vicario?
49:41He's not.
49:41He's defensively sound
49:44has been the watchword
49:45for Spurs in the first half,
49:47and there they are,
49:47the fans in the white shirts
49:49behind the goal.
49:56That was another crazy start,
49:57wasn't it?
49:57I was looking at it,
49:58it's not as if PSG are
49:59unaccustomed to playing English side,
50:01I think eight of their 17 games
50:02in the Champions League last year
50:04were against English sides.
50:07So they know what to expect,
50:08that's for sure.
50:11Yeah,
50:12they won five
50:13of those matches
50:14against the English club sides,
50:16they went round after round,
50:17didn't they,
50:17for a period in the Champions League.
50:21Koudis
50:22gets away from Pacho really well,
50:26and clips the cross,
50:27it's too deep though,
50:28Spence is gonna chase it,
50:29hit the first bit really well.
50:31The first bit deserved better
50:32from the second,
50:33but that was for sure.
50:34Well, it's Vicky van der Ven's goal
50:58that separates these two teams
51:00late in the first half
51:01here on a hot night
51:02in Oudinay,
51:04and that's Tottenham
51:05playing in a Super Cup final
51:06for the first time,
51:07lead the Super Cup final
51:09against Paris Saint-Germain.
51:17Kevin Danso
51:18ready for another one.
51:22This time it's headed away
51:24by Khabar and Scalier.
51:28Spence.
51:32There's one minute
51:33of additional time
51:34as it goes in towards
51:35Richarlison!
51:36It's off the post!
51:37It was Koudis,
51:38I think,
51:39throwing himself at that.
51:41And Spurs
51:42inches away
51:43from being 2-0 up.
51:45It's the early leap,
51:46brilliant Richarlison.
51:47We'll see it very shortly,
51:49but it's all about,
51:50he jumps early.
51:51struggling with height
51:54in the middle
51:54of that defence.
51:57And Tottenham
51:58have focused on it.
52:01And they're asking them
52:02questions
52:02and they're not getting
52:03answered.
52:07That was a brilliant
52:07early leap from the
52:08Charleston,
52:08it really was,
52:09that's the reason
52:10he gets up
52:11and gets in touch.
52:13What a fantastic
52:14first half
52:15it's been
52:15for Spurs.
52:17And of course,
52:17when you've got a new
52:18manager
52:18the slate's
52:19wide clean,
52:20players that you
52:21presume are going
52:22to be starters
52:22might not be
52:23if you can impress
52:24the new fella
52:24and one or two
52:25out there tonight
52:26are probably
52:26sending Thomas Frank
52:27a message.
52:31Certainly looks
52:31that way
52:32and so they should.
52:34Clean slate,
52:35you're off
52:36and running.
52:39Well,
52:39there's half time
52:40and it's
52:41Mickey
52:42Van Der Ven
52:43whose name
52:44is up in lights
52:44at the moment.
52:48And the Spurs
52:49goal,
52:49there's confirmation
52:50of the onside
52:51decision against
52:52Romero.
52:52João Polini's
52:53shot was saved
52:54superbly onto
52:55the crossbar
52:55by Lucas Chevalier
52:56but the Tottenham
52:57defender was
52:58nearest to it
52:59to score his
52:59first goal
53:00for the club
53:00for 15 months.
53:01Kudus hit the
53:02post just before
53:03half time
53:04with the header.
53:05As yet,
53:06Paris Saint-Germain
53:06have had 65%
53:08of the ball
53:08that haven't had
53:09a shot on target
53:10and Tottenham's
53:11tactics under
53:12Thomas Frank
53:13are working
53:14quite brilliantly
53:14here on a
53:15sticky night
53:16in Oudinay.
53:16Half time
53:17in the Super Cup
53:18final as Tottenham
53:19walk off.
53:20It's Paris Saint-Germain
53:21nil,
53:22Tottenham Hotspur
53:22won.
