00:00Good and so Arsenal at Old Trafford have indeed made good they love to win here
00:05and again by a single goal that is Dave just what they have done in the
00:10sunshine at Old Trafford it's Manchester United nil Arsenal won. Away victory for
00:17Mikel Arteta on this first weekend of the season what was it that got them over
00:20the line Micah? I think it was just them being resilient I don't think they were
00:24not the best at all throughout the game I think big characters big performances
00:30from centre half goalkeeper was very good as well I think looking long term we're
00:36talking about the first game of the season but Arsenal looked a little bit leggy
00:40didn't look sharp so there's positive measures to take but all in all I called
00:47it 1-0 before the game I didn't think they'd be the actual best today but to
00:51get a win in the first game away from home is that one of those days Daniel if
00:58it's not working for you as an attacking outlet you just have to make sure you
01:02keep a clean sheet and yes you rely on your goalkeeper at times yeah they were
01:06working their socks off there Man United were knocking on the door and the
01:10goalkeeper was answering but when you when you look at the defensive framework of
01:16Arsenal they were a little bit more open today than I've seen them to be fair I
01:20didn't feel like they were at their best at all this isn't the Arsenal last
01:25season in the season before that of course we're a lot better defensively but
01:29we are early in the season it's the first game so I won't take much from from
01:34that and I imagine they'll improve as the season goes on we can hear now from a
01:37couple of members of that Arsenal defensive unit they're speaking live with
01:41Patrick Davison well David to fight for a title to win a title as you hope to do you
01:47have to show lots of different faces I guess through a season was today a day
01:51where you showed fight resilience character to get the three points I think
01:55so I think when the quality wasn't there we we went in our best day with the ball
02:02defensively we were in our best so that was our fight we got our goal in the first
02:07half with a with a corner and from there we just fought until the end and credit to the
02:12the boys that in the end we kept a clean sheet we know we could have lost the game but football is
02:18like this and days like these days that's that's when the three points count let's bring in the goal
02:24score Riccardo we know that you brilliant team at set pieces and it looked like a new routine so a
02:29hard a lot of hard work in pre-season working on your corners yeah like like always we're working a lot
02:35on set pieces and I think we showed it today every season I think we have to improve if possible and
02:42yeah we have to keep going like that how pleased were you even to get the start today because you
02:47had great moments last season but it was a bit stop start and an example of the depth you've got in
02:52this arsenal squad is those fullback positions where you've got such strong competition yeah I mean
02:58if we want to compete at higher level we have to be good in every position of course my my teammates
03:04are are ready to play so it's not easy to play every game but of course this concurrence that we
03:12have inside is going to help us and it's going to bring up the level so we just have to keep going and
03:16hopefully I'm going to play a lot but if not there is another teammate who's going to play with me and
03:20it's going to be even better but I feel like you always play well here you certainly did last season
03:26pick of the saves today maybe that one from Cunha first half Cunha I think uh it was a tough one uh
03:31I don't know how I saved it to be to be honest it was very very close to to my feet and uh but no
03:36delighted to to have the team to get the three points and that's the main thing okay well well
03:40done you're the player of the match Ricardo do the honors for us it is a big and potentially vital
03:48win this for Arsenal on this opening weekend of the season in which they hope to be mounting a title
03:53challenge at the end of it it all faded rather quickly for them last time around we will see

04:17minute equalizer scored by Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz off the bench and what a start for new boys Sunderland
04:23remember it was October for the first promoted side to get a victory last season they've done
04:28it on the very first time of asking 3-0 over West Ham they play Bernie next week who started their
04:33season back in the Premier League with a 3-0 defeat away to Thomas Frank's Spurs good start for them
04:40two goals from Richarlis and Brendan Johnson also on the score sheet there in Manchester City
04:44on the Saturday Night Football were really impressive against Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 victory

06:50does Roy make of United's new boys we'll get their top five predictions as well before we leave you
06:56tonight and all the reaction here as Arsenal started with an away day victory at Old Trafford
07:030-0-G-O-A-T-G-O-A-T you can be the greatness of all time
07:15now Rice delivers right under the bar and in
07:18right under the bar and in
07:23Califiori right on the line
07:261-0 to the Arsenal, how often we have heard that in recent seasons under Mikel Arteta,
07:37they got the job done off that early goal here at Old Trafford. Roy Keane, how significant
07:41do you think that victory is?
07:42It's an important staff for them, with the other teams doing so well over the weekend,
07:47wasn't great the second half, I thought you lacked quality, particularly from Arsenal's
07:51point of view, but you take a win on the first day of the season and you move on, obviously
07:55a home game next week to Leeds, they'll fancy themselves in that match, but overall I think
07:59the game was poor second half, the expectations that United know are so low that even when
08:04Gary was talking to commentary, everyone's even comfortable with 1-0 defeat, you know,
08:09you've got to do better again.
08:10Does that trouble you?
08:11It does worry me, yeah, even there was obviously the couple in the new signings, a lot of encouragement
08:16with that, they're getting you up to pitch and there's a bit more power, you think obviously
08:19results will improve, it's always tough against Arsenal, but again no goal and not a defeat
08:23first day of the season, so yeah, still problems there with United and then we see it obviously
08:27with the goal, in terms of set-piece, physicality, determination to get a result, your goalkeeper
08:33really not doing well enough, not being strong enough, so yeah, there's still that worry,
08:38I had it before the match, encouragement from some of the attacking players, but…
08:42What was your main worry before the game?
08:44I still think, I suppose what we saw, again not, for all the bit of encouragement, hitting
08:48the post and keeping making saves, not, you never felt United had two or three goals in
08:53them, and even Arsenal getting the one goal, obviously, Arsenal, I think that's a worry
08:58when I see what Arsenal are doing, you wonder why Arsenal are just coming up short, because
09:02they're still happy enough to kind of sit in at 1-0, and then you go, is that the reason
09:06he drew so many games last year, you know, for comparing them to a Man City or a Liverpool,
09:11they're always thinking, let's go and get the second goal, let's, even on a bad day
09:14with Liverpool, you think they'll score two or three goals, so that's the challenge for
09:17Arsenal, but for the first day of the season, obviously their sharpness will improve, like,
09:21Saka, Odegaard, Rice, I think there's a lot more to come from them, but of course you take
09:26a win on the first day of the season, and a clean sheet.
09:28United had their moments, didn't they, but did you ever feel that Arsenal were vulnerable,
09:32or they were going to concede? Yeah, I did, and Bermot was in some great positions,
09:38and you know, if you think he makes the perfect connection on the ball, it's a goal, you know,
09:43the keeper made some good saves, they showed a different side to Arsenal that we haven't
09:50seen, which is that they were a lot more open in those central areas, they found a lot
09:54of joy down the right-hand side with Bermot, especially in the first half, and I think all
09:59and all, Man United's attack will go away thinking to themselves, on another day I
10:03could have left scoring one or two today. That's how I would have felt, certainly if
10:07I was in Bermot, I'd be going to bed thinking, wow, I should have left with one today.
10:12So I think they're going to take confidence from their performance, Man United, but in
10:15the end the result's all that matters, and Arsenal will leave going to London, buzzing
10:19with themselves, saying, look, we didn't perform to our best today, but we're going on with
10:22the three points. As you've said, Mikey, before the game, if your ultimate goal is to win
10:27the title, you have to win here. Yeah, and they won it, and it wasn't pretty at times,
10:32as the guys have said, but it's how much you can dig deep, and I think with Arsenal
10:37what's helped them sort of stay in the fight for the title of the previous seasons, when
10:43they get into that low block, they're very difficult to break down, adding the set pieces
10:48and they're a good side, I would just like to see them be a little bit more brave, and I'm
10:53not just talking about today, I'm talking about previous games as well, but how to start
10:58a season, to come to Old Trafford and get the three points, you can't ask for much more
11:03than that, especially when your players are not fit at this moment in time.
11:07And probably predictable, the source of the goal, because we know Arsenal are so good from
11:12set pieces, and here they were, their first corner of this new season, and you saw Manchester
11:18United in disarray trying to deal with it. Yeah, again, good delivery, we know Arsenal
11:22are big and strong, and they vary it, but if you stop it where it goes, where the ball
11:27ends up, the goalkeeper, that's your keeper's job, so for all the blocking and the advantage,
11:34the goalkeeper, that's his area, he has to be, he has to come with violence, he's got to be
11:40aggressive, he's got to be almost saying to players, yeah, come in here, come here, I'm happy
11:44to deal with it, and you've got to be aggressive, but look, he's just, he's not, he's not strong
11:50enough. You agree, Daniel, he can do more there? Look, look, he's appealing to the referee,
11:53don't be appealing to the referee, so Fletch, look, he's on his heels, if a player comes into
11:57your area, you go, yeah, you come in, you invite him, because I'm going to, I'm going
12:00to hopefully punch the ball, and I'll take you with it. Far too easy, it's like, you wouldn't
12:05see a kind of, it's like schoolboy stuff. We'd seen it before from Henry last season,
12:09against Spurs in the Carabao Cup, so the warning was there? That's part of the goalkeeper's job, we
12:13thought it was shot stopping, but that's about taking command of your area, and also
12:16letting your own defenders know, going, lads, if it does come into this area where it, it
12:20came into, first of all, I've got it, I've got it, listen, if something else happens, we
12:25react to it, but if that comes into me, I am favourite for it, I am going to be favourite,
12:29he's what, 6'2", 6'3", and he ends up on his heels, and he's getting, he's getting bullied,
12:33why don't you bully the other lads? Why don't you come and punch it and go, if you come near
12:37me, listen, I'll take your head off as well, it's no problem, but they're all a bit, referee,
12:41don't look at the referee, take control of it, it's like, there's like a weakness to
12:46it, physically and mentally, and especially on an in-swinger, you must know that when it's
12:50an in-swinger, it'll always be coming towards me, out-swing is slightly different, you think,
12:54I want to be careful, I don't want to be drawn out to it and getting dragged into bodies,
12:58but when it's coming in on top of you, people go, hey, happy days.
13:01By contrast, did we see, through David Raya, the example of that positive goalkeeper who's
13:07going to make sure it doesn't cause him problems, because he's going to deal with it.
13:10Yeah, I mean, the conviction in it is there, his experience and confidence.
13:14Similar situation, isn't it really?
13:16But, if you look on there, who's he got defending a little bit more?
13:20He's got Gabriel, where on the other side, it was Mount.
13:24So, if you look at the balance between Saliba and Mount at the time, he's getting ragdolled everywhere.
13:29I just thought Dalit could have come inside and Mount could have gone outside,
13:33but in terms of the goalkeeper making that decisive decision, it was a really good punch.
13:38But, if we just look here, Mount and Saliba, it's difficult.
13:46I agree with Roy, Bandai should have done a lot better, but when you've got bodies in front of you...
13:51Saliba's not even...
13:53Saliba, look at the goalkeeper, the goalkeeper's not even aware of him, the goalkeeper's on his heels,
13:57and now he starts moving, he should be on his toes, bouncing, going,
13:59no, you're going to come in here and be a nuisance.
14:01Saliba's doing very little to him. Do you know what he's doing?
14:04No, but he's leaning, he's actually, he's only leaning into him.
14:07The job of that player in that role there is to protect the goalkeeper so he can come and punch it.
14:13There's a lot of chaos going on within that.
14:16Micah, this is big.
14:18This is big.
14:19But it's a mismatch, but you've got Dalit.
14:22There's going to be a mismatch, if your team...
14:24Doing nothing.
14:25But if your team, if they've got players, a lot more players bigger than your lads,
14:28you're going to be outmatched somewhere.
14:30But not in the centre of the goal.
14:32It's come to the centre...
14:33But he's only leaning into him.
14:34But that's the goalkeeper, you can't babysit a goalkeeper.
14:36I agree with you that the goalkeeper should definitely do better, but I also believe...
14:40Is that, Micah, a little bit to do with the smartness of Arsenal's routine,
14:45that they sort of eliminate Manchester United's best aerial defenders in that situation?
14:50Why I believe Dalit was at the far point, because Arsenal sometimes have all the players
14:56start at the front and then go to the back.
14:58So they must have thought the ball was going to the back post.
15:01That was the reason I believe Dalit was there.
15:03But, unfortunately, Rice...
15:06We've not talked about Rice's delivery.
15:08It's on a sixpence.
15:09Absolutely brilliant, where it's in the centre of the goal, and that's where you want your
15:14strong centre-half to be, to help out the goalkeeper.
15:18You say that, right?
15:19But they've got Casemiro, a big defensive midfielder, and Euro, who's another centre-half.
15:24I totally agree with Dalit being at the back post.
15:27Are there best markers on people?
15:32Only the manager knows that.
15:34What I will say is, I've done the role of Saliba in this situation,
15:38and it does seem as if he is getting the better of Mount.
15:42But I'm not going to say it's Mount's fault, because in the end...
15:46It's a mismatch.
15:47When you're on the football pitch, right, what do you want?
15:50You want one thing.
15:51It's your goalkeeper to come and clear everybody out.
15:53Any question that he's fouled there?
15:54No.
15:55I wouldn't say so.
15:57He should go and play chess, then, shouldn't he?
15:59Come on.
16:01Part of the game we love is, obviously, the physicality of football.
16:05We're all getting fed up with fouls, but if a goalkeeper is going to be doing this
16:09through our free goal, the Arsenal lads must be looking at this goalkeeper going,
16:12there must be a weakness to that side of his game, obviously.
16:17It's today.
16:19I haven't got a target.
16:20Is there a bigger picture?
16:22I'm sure.
16:25Because Anan, we know, has had his injury problems at the start of this season,
16:29but has he been left out of the sport of his afternoon?
16:33When he has come in, we sometimes say it's difficult for a goalkeeper to come in
16:36and get up to speed or whatever, but he's had a run of games.
16:38He's had a taste of it last year.
16:40But we're on about trust and belief.
16:42The players you want to impress the most when you're a footballer,
16:45you're on about supporters.
16:47There's your teammates.
16:48Your teammates want to be able to look at your goalkeeper going,
16:49if it does come into this neck of the woods,
16:51would it be a Schmeichel or all the top goalkeepers going,
16:53he's fine.
16:54I think he'll be okay.
16:56But instead of us going, I'll block him, I'll block...
16:58He's only leaning into him.
17:00They must do, obviously, they go through their own set pieces.
17:04We saw it before the game.
17:06And if a goalkeeper can't deal with that part of the game,
17:09well, you are in trouble because we know the importance of set pieces.
17:12We saw Forrest in their first goal today.
17:14Set pieces are deciding huge games.
17:15We saw the stats from Arsenal.
17:17That's one of the reasons they're competing so well at the top of the table,
17:19just alone from their set pieces.
17:21So, if you're a goalkeeper before the game,
17:23if they're doing their chats this morning,
17:25the last few days, and you're going through what you have to sort out,
17:27and you said to your goalkeeper, if that comes in here,
17:30your goalkeeper coach would be saying to you,
17:32listen, that's on you.
17:34And he's not dealing with it.
17:35So, it's on him.
17:36Let's bring in more reaction.
17:37Bruno Fernandes is with Patrick Davison.
17:42Well, Bruno, of course, the result isn't what you wanted,
17:45but in terms of the performance, was that a step forward?
17:49No, it's the first game of the season,
17:52so we can't speak about step forwards.
17:54He's the first one.
17:55So, I think we made what was asked during the season.
18:01We did a lot of good things, but obviously it wasn't enough.
18:05We conceded a goal from a set pieces in the first half,
18:08and I think from there on Arsenal didn't have any good chances.
18:14They didn't create any good chances.
18:15We were defending very well.
18:17I think, again, we created too many chances without scoring,
18:22so that's a point we have to look at and make it better next time.
18:28Is that a real positive, though, the way you were able to limit them
18:32and control large portions of the match?
18:35No, obviously. I think in the first half, the game was very divided.
18:40Obviously, in the second half, Arsenal was defending the result,
18:43so it's normal for the teams to drop a little bit more,
18:45but I think we controlled well the game.
18:47We were very good on the ball, and as I said, we created some chances,
18:52but we didn't score. I think that's the main negative of the game for us today.
18:58Is the goal you've conceded a really disappointing one?
19:02The way you've given the corner away and then conceding from it
19:05when you know their strength in that area?
19:07No, no. It's part of the game. Corners, obviously.
19:12We know that they're very good in set pieces.
19:17Obviously, I haven't seen the goal again, but obviously,
19:20when you touch the goalkeeper, when he wants to jump and go for the ball,
19:25it makes it very difficult for him.
19:27Unfortunately, Alta couldn't get the ball out of the goal.
19:30Did you get a view on that? Any sense from you that it was a foul?
19:33No, no, no. As I said, I haven't seen the replay,
19:36and I was in the first ball, so I can't talk about it,
19:38but Alta was saying that in the moment he goes to push the ball,
19:41he gets a touch, but obviously, we know in the Premier League
19:44they don't give much in this type of situation,
19:48even if they had a meeting with us saying that if the players are blocking
19:51and not looking at the ball, they will whistle more.
19:54But we know that's just a kind of a saying,
19:58but not really going into the game.
20:01Did you feel like the new boys that started the game,
20:03so Ndomo and Cunha, added quite a lot of threat to the team,
20:07even though obviously no goal to show for it?
20:10Yeah, but they created a lot, they were in the right positions.
20:12I think, obviously, when he came as a 10, he was much more dangerous,
20:15but even as a striker, he created some chances.
20:18We know they're dangerous, we know they're a threat,
20:21and they can help us a lot in that position, on the counters,
20:25coming inside with the ball and get them shots.
20:28So, we're very aware of what they can give to the team.
20:33It was a good first impression for them,
20:36but I'm pretty sure they will do much better.
20:38Do you have the sense, despite this defeat,
20:41similar to the first question, that this isn't just a repeat of last season?
20:46There is some hope that comes out of what you've done in pre-season
20:49and what you've done today?
20:50No, obviously, we have a big hope for this season,
20:53for what we want to achieve, for what we want to do this season.
20:56So, I think, as I said, losing the game is difficult to look at some positive things,
21:03but are there positive things to look about?
21:07Defending better on the set pieces is something that we need to look about.
21:10Also, scoring goals is something that we need to look at.
21:14But, as I said, I really liked the reaction of the fans at the end,
21:18and I really appreciate what they did.
21:20The sign of hope that you talk, for me,
21:24there was more the sign of hope than what we did on the game.
21:28Thank you very much.
21:29Thanks, Bruno.
21:33What hope did you see?
21:34What fresh hope did you see for Manchester United?
21:37Come on, Roy, it's the first.
21:39Come on, Roy, man.
21:40Roy almost fell off the sofa.
21:43It's the first game.
21:45Give them a little bit of leeway.
21:48It's all getting up to speed.
21:50There was definitely positives in Man United's play today.
21:53Okay, they didn't get the result that they wanted.
21:55Come on, what were they?
21:56Look.
21:57I thought Dorgu and Dalot in the first half were outstanding.
21:59I thought they took more wrist.
22:01Normally, Man United played more a low block.
22:03I thought it was more in the mid block.
22:05They took chances when Dorgu got his chance.
22:07Then to bring on Dalot in the second half,
22:09he couldn't create as much as he wanted to.
22:11And Mberma was really good in running in that right-hand channel.
22:16I thought there was positives for Man United today.
22:18Daniel, would you add to that?
22:20I think Kunja today lit the place up.
22:23I thought he was the best player for Man United for me.
22:25Maybe on the pitch.
22:26I think what he was doing is going to bring something different
22:30to what Man United...
22:31They haven't had something like that
22:33where it can get you on the edge of your seat.
22:35And I think for me, as he continues to go,
22:39he's going to be a special player for the team.
22:42I think in attack, they looked really good.
22:45They were knocking on the door, like I said before.
22:47Raya was answering.
22:48It's football.
22:49Sometimes you give your best going forward
22:51and it's not good enough.
22:52I think defensively, they looked better.
22:55They were positive in their defensive actions centrally.
22:58You know, you saw the Doggy chants in the first half
23:01where they swarmed in the middle of the park
23:03and then off they went.
23:04And then he was positive going forward and taking a shot.
23:07And I think all in all, of course, the result's all that matters.
23:12It's football.
23:13That's what it's all about, right?
23:14You want the three points.
23:15But if I'm going into that dressing room
23:18off the back of last season's performances,
23:21I'm thinking to myself, you know what, man?
23:23Yeah, we've lost today, but played Arsenal for one.
23:25We've given our best.
23:27Of course, we should...
23:29They drew home with Arsenal last season.
23:30What I'm saying is...
23:31Man United should be capable.
23:33No, they should be capable, but they've also finished.
23:36Where in the league?
23:37What was it?
23:38So, we're talking about...
23:39We're not talking about head-to-head.
23:40It's a new season, right?
23:42If I'm a Manchester United player, I'm going in there thinking
23:44we've lost today, I'm absolutely devastated.
23:46But in comparison to where we were,
23:48there's loads of positives to take away
23:49and the new players don't have that mindset.
23:51They're coming in with a fresh mindset thinking,
23:53I'm coming to Man United.
23:54I'm coming to rip it up.
23:55I want to tear this place down.
23:56I want to show everybody what I'm all about
23:58and I want to change this club
23:59and bring them back to where they were.
24:00That's what the new players might say.
24:01We will give you a chance to respond to this, Roy.
24:03Yeah, but I just think...
24:04Talking about the new signs,
24:05they did look like Man United players,
24:07I give them that.
24:08They looked like they enjoyed it
24:09and they embraced the pressure.
24:10There are positives.
24:11Good.
24:12We will give Roy a chance to respond to everything else
24:17Manchester United in a few minutes' time.
24:19But when we come back, we're going to get the reaction
24:21of the Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta,
24:24to this opening weekend win.

28:38Runners up for three successive seasons.
28:40Arsenal fans are asking, could this be their year?
28:43Well, they're off to a winning start here away to Manchester United.
28:46Let's hear from the boss, Mikel Arteta, with Patrick Davison.
28:52Well, Mikel, we can come to how you did it shortly.
28:55But firstly, what did you think about the character your team showed?
28:59How important was it that you got the result today?
29:01Well, massive.
29:02To come in the first picture to Old Trafford with that atmosphere,
29:05the way they are building momentum with the new signings
29:07and the excitement around it is top.
29:09I mean, it's a great feeling.
29:11Then we have to be really humble about the way we did it.
29:14And we did it one because we put a magnificent set piece in.
29:18And after, because the way we reacted to mistakes.
29:21To enforce mistakes and mistakes that are very far from the standards
29:25that we normally have.
29:27And we constantly reacted to that in a really possible way.
29:29And that's the reason why we had the opportunity to win again.
29:32OK, so for your best level, far too many mistakes.
29:35But the reactions to those mistakes got you the result.
29:38Well, as you're talking about character and spirit, that's it.
29:40I'm not having the best day from the first action.
29:42I can make a mistake.
29:43How do I react to that?
29:44And it wasn't one.
29:45It was many players that acted.
29:47Because there are many moments that, I mean, in open spaces,
29:50we should have killed them.
29:51And after the win, the other way, immediately catching us in the back foot.
29:56The way everybody tried, the way everybody defends.
29:58It was phenomenal.
29:59So you scored with your first corner of the season.
30:02We know you're always a threat from set pieces.
30:04But it looks like you've worked hard on them over pre-season.
30:06A slightly different set-up, it looked like.
30:08Yeah, in many ways.
30:09We have changed and evolved certain things that, obviously,
30:12we don't want to make it unpredictable for the opposition.
30:15And it pays the price.
30:17At the end, the games are won in both boxes.
30:19And that's what we've done today.
30:21Do you think today, with the expectation that's on you,
30:24that was a huge moment?
30:26Maybe it sounds a bit odd to ask it after one game.
30:29But with United and the games you've got to follow,
30:31narratives around big clubs can build quickly.
30:34Yeah, and it is and it says a lot.
30:36Because I just look at the players' faces and they want much more.
30:39And we know that we are much better than certain moments where we played.
30:42I think before I came here, it was 18 or 22 years
30:45without winning at Old Trafford.
30:46And now we come here, we won many times and we're still unsatisfied.
30:50And I take that as a massive compliment
30:52and as a way to build what we want to build.
30:54What needs to be better?
30:56There are a lot of aspects, I think.
30:58Especially the way we started the game.
31:00We do it with 50-50 actions,
31:02with simple giveaways after again in the ball.
31:04We need to be very careful against a team that has the speed,
31:07the ability in the front line to thread you that way.
31:09We need to be very careful.
31:11Lastly then, what did you make of your new boys?
31:13Zubimendi, Jokerez, the two that started the game?
31:16Well, I'm very happy with them.
31:17The ones that they come in as well.
31:18I think they had a massive impact in the game.
31:21We need to glide them together.
31:23Some of them physically still are not at the highest level
31:26or the way that we need to get.
31:28We'll get there.
31:30Thank you so much.
31:31Yeah, very satisfying victory for Mikel Arteta.
31:34But admittance that they're not at their best at this stage of the season.
31:38Have they almost, Daniel, got to learn how to use Victor Jokerez at the top of the pitch?
31:43I think so, yes.
31:44I really do.
31:46Why?
31:47Because when you are an attacker who's, you know, used to doing certain actions,
31:52and I think Saka is used to playing a certain way and doing specific types of things.
31:57Likewise, the player on the left wing and they've been playing with a striker in Havertz
32:01who's very different to Jokerez.
32:03It does take time to get used to that player's runs.
32:06He's going to have to also alter his game.
32:09It's not just about the team changing for him.
32:11It's about him changing for the team also and understanding how he's going to perform best.
32:16The manager's going to have to implement certain things on the training pitch.
32:20He's going to have to have personal conversations.
32:22And that's what it takes for you to hit the ground running.
32:25So how did you adapt your game when you went from different clubs from Man City to Bolton to Chelsea to Liverpool?
32:33I think it's, again, the conversations, understanding who you're playing with.
32:38So, for instance, when I was at Chelsea, I was playing on the wing.
32:41So I knew Didier would like certain types of passes or crosses,
32:45and Torres was different to him, so I had to play different with Torres.
32:48And Niko, Analka would be different and maybe you could change positions with Niko a little bit.
32:53Likewise, when you talk about Bolton, I was up front with Kevin Davis,
32:56so with Flickhans, OK, cool, I'm big man, little man vibe today.
32:59You know, old school, you know what I'm saying?
33:01And then you go to Liverpool, where it was me and Louis to start with.
33:04And again, it's like you're both almost playing in a split strikers thing.
33:10I view it as Jokeres is used to playing a specific way with sport in Lisbon.
33:15Throughout his career, I think he's a traditional centre forward who's going to make runs in behind.
33:20He's a strong player, he's got pace, he's powerful, and his game is predicated on that power.
33:25And those first yards of making a run to get himself in a position to get a shot-off.
33:30And he missed a lot of pre-season, didn't he? He did miss a chunk of pre-season with all the transfer speculation.
33:34I don't think he was training. So, you're thinking about a few more games.
33:37He didn't look sharp today. Yeah, he didn't.
33:39We can show you his touch map. And this maybe, Mike, has suggested that he and Arsenal are some way from unlocking his real potential.
33:49I think we've got three touches in the opposition box.
33:52And for context, I think Szczesko coming on late in the game actually had four touches in the opposition box.
33:58And just to add on Jokeres, it's the first time in a league game since he left Coventry that he's not actually had a shot at a game.
34:05Yeah, I think Roy mentioned that he's come back late to pre-season.
34:09You'd like these touch maps to be a little bit better.
34:12But you expect someone to be the sharpest on the first game of the season.
34:16Daniel makes a great point about how to adapt to the team.
34:20I think he's a striker where he plays with wing-backs and he just makes that run.
34:25I think Arsenal, the way they want to play that increase is through the mid-block and then Havertz getting on the ball and all them sort of things.
34:34But today, he just looked a little bit frustrated.
34:37And that was not just Arsenal. I think it's because when Man Utd, at times, last season, they were dropping off.
34:44But Luke Shaw was engaging, really tight. He knew exactly what he had to do.
34:49I thought Joro was good for a young player as well, reading the game, reading situations.
34:54And I thought the atmosphere was just a lot for him today.
34:57I think it'd be different once he goes to the Emirates and he's got the home team behind him.
35:01Leeds United next week. He'll be looking forward to that.
35:03Of course. He struggled today, but we didn't expect him to be at his best today anyway, you know?
35:08Well, this is the start that we've referenced a couple of times that Mikel Arteta's side.
35:15Yes, a new promoted team next week in their first home game.
35:19But then after that, before the international break, away to Liverpool.
35:23Nottingham Forest, who looked good today and it made it very difficult for top sides last season.
35:28Penn City, then away to Newcastle, where they lost last season, have found it tough in recent seasons.
35:34But will they look at those differently because of the fact they've got off to a winning start here?
35:38Yeah, and listen, most teams have difficult starts. You can't look at any game and think it's going to be easy.
35:43But from Arsenal's point of view, the sign of a really good team is when you're not at your best to win football matches.
35:48The worry for me a little bit in the second half, and the manager mentioned it there,
35:51is that there were opportunities to really go at United and it was just a...
35:55We're not about difficult passes, sometimes it's just a simple pass or a simple run.
35:58They seemed awful from that point of view.
36:00But if you can win when you're not at your best, then that's a big plus.
36:04But going forward, when you're competing, you're trying to compete now with the likes of, obviously,
36:08we see Liverpool and Man City, they seem to have that more of a...
36:11They want to go for that second goal or that third goal, whereas Arsenal are still a bit.
36:14We've got 1-0, we maybe hold on to it.
36:16And that kind of backfired a little bit last year when, again, we go back to it,
36:19they're too many draws.
36:20Too many draws won't win your league titles, and that's where they have to improve.
36:24So when we see them next week, if they're 1-0 up against Leeds, that they're really clinical.
36:28And obviously Leeds at home is a different animal to Man Utd away, no doubt, as much as United are struggling.
36:32So I think Arsenal will need to find out, and we didn't see it today, and that's the first day of the season,
36:36to be really clinical in their play and really go for the second and third goal.
36:41Don't be hanging back and thinking we'd hold on.
36:43They've done that last year and it cost them.
36:44I think that they need to score different types of goals to take the next step.
36:49More penetrative passes in the central areas, which in turn will give Giocares more opportunities to score goals.
36:56I think a lot of the goals he will end up scoring will be goals like Haaland scores,
37:00which is one-touch finishes in the box, crosses coming in, headers, poaching in the six-yard box.
37:05I think he also thrives off of, similar to Haaland does though, in that those penetrative passes around the box,
37:11which is going to give him the chance to make that burst over a few yards to get his shots away.
37:15And will Zubimendi help with that as well, when he's got a bit more time and a bit more space?
37:18For sure.
37:19Yeah, well they scored a goal exactly like that in pre-season, where it was cut back, it went out wide,
37:24it come back to Zubimendi, first time crossed and Giocares was there to head it in.
37:28So, it was just about building.
37:30And when you're a big strong man like that and you do miss pre-season,
37:32sometimes for the bigger lads, we're big units and he's a big strong boy,
37:35he's like an old-fashioned striker.
37:36You definitely need a bit more time to kind of get up to speed.
37:39Sometimes the slider lads are a bit sharper up here, but for the big lads,
37:42it just takes a bit longer to get back in the swing of things.
37:45Maybe then worrying signs for Arsenal's opponents in this title race this season,
37:50because being far from their best today, they have kept a clean sheet
37:53and they've got the three points here at Old Trafford,
37:56which might be a more difficult proposition for visiting teams this season.
38:00We will see.

42:44Not congratulations because we lost the game at home.
42:48I think we deserve clearly a different result.
42:53And we need to move forward to the next one.
42:56So what did you like about the performance?
42:58What did you do well that gave you control in large parts of the match?
43:03We were more aggressive than last year.
43:05We sprint more.
43:07We were more brave.
43:09We let one against one all the game.
43:12We press high.
43:14And then with the ball, we have quality.
43:17Even when the stadium makes some sounds,
43:20we continue to play the way we play.
43:23We lost fewer balls in the build-up compared to last year.
43:30We struggled a lot.
43:31And then the small things that we talk about
43:35in the beginning of this season,
43:38that players like Cunha, like Brian,
43:40in one moment can elevate the stadium.
43:43So I think the most important thing, we were not boring.
43:46No, you weren't boring.
43:48So Umbermo and Cunha,
43:49even though they weren't able to get on the score sheet today,
43:51did you feel like, compared to last season,
43:53they gave you a threat,
43:55even in moments where maybe Arsenal were on top in the game?
43:59Yeah.
44:00You always feel in the game that they can do something,
44:03and they can push the team.
44:06Not just with the ball, but without the ball.
44:08They press really well.
44:09They are working really hard.
44:10Again, I'm proud for the game that they played,
44:14everybody, but we lost and we need to work on different things.
44:18Did the reaction of the fans at full-time actually tell you something?
44:22Did that tell you that they quite liked what they saw?
44:25Even during the game, but again, we need to win games,
44:28but that was a completely different game from last season.
44:31What did you make of the goal you conceded?
44:33It's more or less the same that happened sometimes that happened last year.
44:40For me, it's not playing the ball.
44:43It's protecting the guys that they are attacking.
44:45I understand that we want goals,
44:47but when you're touching the goalkeeper in that way,
44:49I think it's hard.
44:50And especially to lose with a goal like this, I think it's hard.
44:54What would you say to your goalkeeper then?
44:56Bad luck, that was a foul?
44:57Or does he have to be stronger in that instance?
45:00It's hard to be strong when you have to push and to go for the ball.
45:02Sometimes you are pushing and then you don't have more hands to go for the ball.
45:07We need to be stronger in that moment,
45:09but especially we need to do the same thing in the opposite side.
45:13So, we are not changing the rules.
45:16We have to adapt to the rules.
45:18And today, it's hard to accept because I think we were the better team.
45:22Okay.
45:23Lastly then, how do you see that goalkeeper situation moving forward?
45:27Bayon Dier was obviously in goal today.
45:28You've got Tom Heaton.
45:29Anan not in the squad at all.
45:31Is that a fight between the three of them?
45:33In the last few weeks of the transfer window, would you like to add a goalkeeper?
45:36No, we have players to win any game of Premier League.
45:40We need to focus, forget about the noise.
45:43We are fighting for the places, that is a good thing, but we are playing as a team.
45:47It doesn't matter who is playing, we want to win games.
45:51Thanks, William.
45:53Well, Roy, we touched on it earlier.
45:54Do you see reasons, ground for optimism here for Manchester United this season?
45:58Yeah, I think with the couple of signings that have come in we saw today,
46:00I was encouraged by that.
46:01Again, they look like Man United players, they were happy to deal with the pressure.
46:04They look like they've got good characters, but we discussed it many times before.
46:10We can be going around in circles.
46:12There's still that worry about United at the back.
46:16Ultimately, they're all talking about, I'm hearing obviously noises again about Proud was a good performance,
46:21but they've lost the game, you know.
46:23Talk about not being boring, but you've got to score goals to win football matches
46:27or you're constantly under pressure.
46:28There's a good chance you will concede a goal in the Premier League,
46:30but if you can score even the last two competitive games,
46:33if you want to say they lost to Spurs, never scored a goal in the final.
46:36They've lost an important game again today, didn't score a goal.
46:39You look at, the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Man United,
46:44even over the last 20, 30, 40 years, is about their attacking players and goal scorers
46:48and people who win you matches in big moments.
46:51I know they've got a couple just in the door, but I don't see that with the other group
46:54and they can come out afterwards and say we're a bit unlucky
46:56or Bruno say the fans are great.
46:58But all that means, it means very little to me.
47:01But again, I think the expectations around the club and the expectations is that low now
47:05that everyone's almost happy with that.
47:09Well, they're starting from such a low bar, aren't they?
47:11Would you accept that?
47:12Yeah, but that's down on the players because the manager now,
47:15his first pre-season, he's had 28 league matches, he's got 27 points.
47:20And at the start, we're being told about these coaches coming into the club
47:24and they're brilliant coaches and all we're hearing is constantly,
47:27well, I need to get some players in.
47:28I need to get...
47:29And then you bring players in, you spend hundreds of millions
47:31and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.
47:33And then we're talking about the importance of the set pieces.
47:35We've seen before, we're watching them here in the warm-up,
47:38going through set pieces and set pieces.
47:40But the importance of the set pieces is when the game starts.
47:43Sorry, this head coach never wanted this job in the middle of last season, did he?
47:48He wanted his season, his Manchester United career to start, if you like, today.
47:52I know, but listen, for the timing, you can't be picking and choosing when you get a job.
47:55Timing's key.
47:56So, listen, he's got his foot in the door, he's had his pre-season, there is positives.
48:00And I was encouraged by particularly some of the new sign-ins.
48:04But you still have a problem with the goalkeeper, you still have a problem defensively.
48:07And this was a national team who I think four or five years of players haven't turned up.
48:12Rice, Neb Priz, Odegaard, I thought Odegaard was shocking.
48:15Saka didn't do much.
48:17Players off the bench didn't do too much.
48:19So this was a blow, this was a poor performance from Arsenal.
48:23But again, we gave them credit earlier, you get a result.
48:25So from United's point of view, this wasn't a strong Arsenal team coming and going at them,
48:29going, listen, we're up against it.
48:30But United still didn't win the game.
48:33So we look at the record over the last year or so, or this manager.
48:37And after how many, after how many games can you sit there and say the same stuff?
48:42What's the sign of insanity?
48:43Doing the same thing over and over again.
48:45You come to Man United, part of being a Man United player or being at a club and so on,
48:48is entertaining.
48:50And part of entertainment, the best part of any football match is when the ball goes into the back of the air.
48:54No one gets excited.
48:55They get off their seats a little bit if somebody makes the tackle.
48:58But you're here to see goals and last minute goals in big moments.
49:01And has this team got that in their locker? Not yet.
49:04Well, the rebuild had to start somewhere, didn't it?
49:06They spent £207 million on three new front players.
49:09Two of whom started from the outset, Mbermo and Cunha.
49:14And they were, you know, record levels of low goals scoring last season, Daniel.
49:21Do you think these players will score goals for Manchester United?
49:24Do you think United will score goals?
49:26That was a great save from Ryan.
49:28These players are going to score goals.
49:30I have no doubt about it.
49:31Mbermo and Cunha are too good not to score goals.
49:34Czesko, I've not seen him yet in the Premier League to really know how the cohesion is going to work with the other two
49:41and what type of player he is in this framework.
49:45But in regards to Cunha and Mbermo, we've seen what they can do in the past over the course of their careers in the Premier League.
49:51And then coming here today, I'm thinking, wow, like Cunha, you know, very, very special.
49:57But then, you know, it's going to be a long season, but I am optimistic for them.
50:03Let me just talk you through this a little bit.
50:05Robert Van Persie was the last Manchester United player to score 20 or more goals in a Premier League season.
50:12And look at all those other clubs who've had success at that.
50:16Manchester City have had that happen ten times.
50:19Now, that might have been Haaland multiple times or other players involved in that.
50:22But on ten occasions, a player scored 20 or more since a player last did it for Manchester United.
50:27Southampton, Forest, Everton have all done it.
50:30Brentford have done it twice, once with Mbermo.
50:32Leicester, Chelsea and Arsenal have done it three times.
50:35Spurs seven, Liverpool eight.
50:38And it's not been through a lack of investment.
50:41£761 million has been spent on forwards by Manchester United in that time.
50:50And not one of those has managed to get the 20 blows goals.
50:52But it's strange, though, because if you look at the players on that list,
50:55there's some amazing players on the list.
50:58You know, Lukaku, you're looking at £90 million.
51:00He plays at Inter, he does really well.
51:03Goes to Napoli, does well.
51:05Ronaldo, you know him. Ibrahimovic as well.
51:08Cavani, one of the best strikers to run in behind.
51:11Falcao, OK, he had his injury problems with his knee at the time.
51:15Alexis Sanchez did all right.
51:18But, I mean...
51:20But what do all these charts mean? We can watch the charts all, don't we?
51:23Yeah, but a lot of it's not the recruitment.
51:25A lot of these players come into the club at a bad time.
51:27There is that. There'll be reasons for it.
51:29Players come in towards the end of their careers, or players had injuries,
51:31or the environment wasn't right, or the club was too big for them.
51:34I suppose the question I want to ask, Roy, is have they spent the money in the right way this summer?
51:38Well, we don't know yet.
51:40£200 million on the strike course.
51:42We don't know yet.
51:43But you've talked, Roy, about problems with the goalkeeper, problems with defence, problems with midfield.
51:46Are they right to put all that money at the top of the pitch?
51:49Well, we're talking about players getting 20-odd goals here.
51:52The team scored 44 last year, so forget about anyone getting 20.
51:56You need Man United, between them, getting 50 or 60, just to try and get it back up the table a little bit.
52:02So, yeah, you have to start summer.
52:04And I think the signings, yeah, I've been encouraged.
52:06I thought, today, but this idea of just hanging your hat again on one or two players and having moments.
52:10But if these players aren't at it, and we're sitting here again today, they go, oh, that was unlucky.
52:14Listen, do you know what you get from hitting the post?
52:18Yeah, yeah, yeah. You get very little, or a keeper making a save.
52:20The top boys are clinical.
52:22And we've seen that over the weekend.
52:24Top boys put the ball in the back, and they don't go, oh, you're unlucky, or they keep...
52:27You put it in the corner, make sure the keeper doesn't save it.
52:30So, these charts and these things, and the money, it's like monopoly money.
52:34You might as well say 2 billion.
52:36What difference does it make?
52:38I think they've signed players this year specifically for the positions.
52:43The manager's identified.
52:44He has a framework, he has a style of play, which he wants to implement into Manchester United.
52:49He's brought those two players specifically for them roles.
52:52It's a great thing to say, okay, one of them scored 20 Premier League goals.
52:56Maybe there were some penalties in there, so in open play.
52:58Likewise for Cunha, so you'd like to think when they come into this football club,
53:02they will be able to make that happen.
53:04The 20-plus goals thing, I think that's down to the framework, down to which players...
53:10Who's taking the onus to take the shots?
53:12Obviously, them being clinical.
53:14The list that you threw up there, you probably got, you know, 10 from Manchester City.
53:17Three or four might have been Haaland, and then the other six might be Aguero.
53:21You know, Salah, Suarez, I think I was one of them, one of those 20s there.
53:27Sadio Mane, Tottenham, Harry Kane, you know, the list goes on.
53:32So it doesn't really matter as long as they're getting 15 each or even 12 each.
53:36Yeah, it's a collective thing. It's like saying, okay, you want one for 20 or three for 15?
53:41What would you prefer?
53:42Some of them, that list there, hey, there's some bad players on that list.
53:47I'm kidding.
53:48These are good players. They weren't all that good.
53:50That's really turned your mood, putting that list up right.
53:52They weren't all good, yeah.
53:53And it's not always the players' fault either.
53:55When the club are paying 80, 90 million for an average player, that's not on the player.
53:58That's on the club for overpaying for the player.
54:01But again, some players come to Man United, and the timing at the moment
54:04to walk into that dressing room wouldn't be great.
54:06Yeah.
54:07But also, the good thing for a player coming in now, if they can lift them,
54:10then the fans will love them. We saw today with a couple of new players,
54:13the fans have gone, we're desperate for success.
54:15If you can success, get us up to the top half of the table,
54:18they'll take that because the expectations are so low.
54:21And we've still got predictions to come as well this evening.
54:23That'll go down well.
54:26But first, if you're watching Sky Sports main event,
54:29we're going to give you cricket live. Cricket is coming your way.
54:321-2-7 is the target for Birmingham Phoenix against London Spirit.
54:38That is happening on Sky Sports main event.
54:41And yes, it is prediction time for these three.
54:46Who's going to finish top five this season?
54:49Where are Manchester United going to finish, Roy?
54:51Don't tell us. We're going to find out in just a minute.
54:54Sky Sports Premier League for that.
54:56And we'll also look back on what happened in the two o'clock kick-offs
55:00on this opening Super Sunday of the season.
55:03Do stay with us.
55:04G-O-A-T, you can be the greatest of all time.
