00:53Nigeria has recorded a significant breakthrough in the war against terrorism with the capture of the leaders of Ansaru and Mahmouda.
01:01At a press briefing on Saturday evening, the National Security Advisor, Malam Nuhu Rabadu, said the two terrorists on the wanted list of Nigeria, the US, UK and UN were captured in an operation which was conducted between May and July 2025.
01:18He said the men were captured in a high-risk, intelligence-led, counter-terrorism operation which led to their capture.
01:26Their leaders of Jumatu Ansaru al-Muslimanah Fai Baladis, Sudan, commonly known as Ansaru, Nigeria's Al-Qaeda affiliate.
01:35Rabadu said the two men have been responsible for masterminding many terrorist attacks against Nigeria over the past years.
01:42According to Rabadu, the first is Mahmoud Muhammad Usman, a.k.a. Abu Barah, Abbas, Maktar, the self-styled emir of Ansaru.
01:53He is the coordinator of various terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria.
01:58He is also the mastermind of several high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to finance terrorism over the years.
02:05The second is Mahmoud al-Nigeri, a.k.a. Malam Mahmouda, Abu Barah's proclaimed chief of staff and deputy.
02:13He is the leader of the so-called, Mahmouda wa, cell hiding out in and around the Kainji National Park, straddling Niger and Kwara states up to Benin Republic.
02:23Mahmouda trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under foreign jihadist instructors from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, specializing in weapons handling and IED fabrication.
02:37These two men have been on Nigeria's most wanted list for years.
02:41They jointly spearheaded multiple attacks on civilians, security forces, and critical infrastructure.
02:48Their operations include the 2022 Kuja prison break, the attack on the Niger uranium facility, the 2013 abduction of French engineer Francis Colombe in Katsina, and the May 1, 2019 kidnapping of Al-Hajji Moussa Umar-Uba, Magajan Garandara.
03:06They were also behind the abduction of the emir of Wawa and they maintained active links with terrorist groups across the macro, particularly in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
03:17The two men, who are wanted internationally, are currently in custody.
03:22The capture of Abu Barra and Malam Mahmouda, the group's leader and deputy commander, respectively, marks one of the most significant achievements to date in our ongoing effort to rid Nigeria of the threat of terrorism.
03:35The successful decapitation of the leadership of this dangerous franchise marks the most decisive blow against ANSARU since its inception.
03:44This strike has effectively dismantled its central command while paving the path for the complete annihilation of the group, Rabadu said.
03:53The ANSARU group was first formed in January 2012 with a public declaration in Kano.

05:31Today, I am glad to inform you that we have successfully concluded a high-risk, intelligence-led, counter-terrorism operation, which led to the capture of the top leadership of Jama'atul Ansarul Muslimina Fibiladis Sudan,
05:58commonly known as ANSARU, Nigeria's al-Qaeda affiliate.
06:07The group was first formed in January 2012 with a public declaration in Kano.
06:15It emerged as a splinter faction from Boko Haram, positioning itself as a humane alternative.

11:51These include a catch of materials and digital evidence,
11:57which are all now undergoing forensic analysis.
12:01The findings from the analysis are expected to support our ongoing efforts to exploit this success,
12:09bring them to justice,
12:11and completely annihilate the residual of Ansaru.
12:19Bring them to justice, like I said,
12:21and bring down the networks,
12:23and disrupt their foreign collaborators.
12:25The capture of Abu Barra and Mahmouda signals the beginning of the end of,
12:33or end to impunity for terrorist leaders in Nigeria.
12:38Nigeria will continue to pursue extremists,
12:41with precision, resolve, and unwavering determination.
12:47The fight is far from over, yes,
12:49but the fall of Ansaru leadership represents a decisive step forward.
