In Guatemala, mothers and women's groups seek to preserve the memory of the 41 girls who died in a fire at the Virgen de la Asunción safe house in 2017, and are calling for unity to demand dignified compensation after a court ruled against those who let the girls die in that incident.

00:00Ceremonies are being held in Guatemala to honor the memory of 41 girls murdered at the
00:10Virgin de la Asensia and Shelter in 2017, following a conviction against six former
00:14public officials.
00:17For us in this space, at this altar and memorial for the girls that we have built and maintained
00:25in the Central Park of Guatemala City, we call on the sacred fire as a fundamental element
00:30to remember them, to speak with the grandmothers and grandfathers to continue demanding justice
00:34because, although today the first conviction was handed down, we hope it will not be the
00:39only one because there are other groups of accused.
00:49For mothers, the sacred fire is a space that helps them overcome their suffering from the
00:52loss of their daughters.
00:59At the meetings, the mothers call for the conviction of all those involved in the tragedy, including
01:07former President of the Republic Jimmy Morales.
01:11For the families of the victims, conviction is not enough.
01:12It is important to reiterate the responsibility of the state and ensure that the measures of
01:18redress are fair.
01:25In some way, repair can be the mechanism for restoring rights and ensuring that this situation
01:32does not repeat that officials who run for public office have the necessary specialization,
01:39especially when it comes to children and adolescents.
01:45Women's collectives warn that they will accompany mothers in the streets and squares to demand
01:52justice and keep their memory alive.
