00:00Segambot MP Hannah Yeo has initiated bankruptcy proceedings against University
00:05Utara Malaysia lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusof after he failed to pay more than 400,000 ringgit
00:11in damages and costs awarded for defaming her. Yeo's lawyer Sangit Kordiyo told FMT that Kamarul
00:18had not paid the damages and costs despite the High Court's decision in May. She said they had
00:23commenced bankruptcy proceedings against him and as they were unable to serve the notice papers
00:28directly, they obtained an order to do so via substituted service, which included placing
00:33an advertisement in a newspaper. Yeo, the youth and sports minister, had filed a lawsuit in 2022
00:39over Kamarul's Facebook posts. On May 30, the High Court ordered Kamarul to pay Yeo
00:44400,000 ringgit in damages and 80,000 ringgit in legal costs for defaming her in two Facebook
00:50posts published in 2017. On the same day, Kamarul said he would appeal against the High Court decision
00:56and challenged both the factual findings and legal basis of the ruling.
01:00Sangit confirmed that Kamarul had filed an appeal in June but delayed seeking a stay,
01:05allowing the plaintiff to enforce the judgment. She added that the hearing for his
