04:09Getting you back on track.
04:16Welcome back to Alton Park where Reid is in trouble.
04:19He's laid a line of oil all around the circuit.
04:21A little bit of an oil leak, I think.
04:25I'm not sure.
04:26We've got a new engine in just for this race and it's going extremely well.
04:30I hope we can get it fixed.
04:32I was just aware of a bit of a smoke coming into the cockpit.
04:36Couldn't see behind me.
04:37If that's Anthony Reid's idea of an MG engine going well, I wouldn't want to see one going badly because, you know, they're going to have to put pints and pints of oil into that engine.
04:47Dan Eves has never run with maximum ballast on board and he has Plato next door.
04:51Reid is missing as a result of those problems.
04:54Matt Neill will have more space, but so will James Thompson who's been making good starts this year.
04:58Turkington starts from sixth.
04:59He'll be chased by Tom Chilton's Honda again and by Muller's Astra, now much lighter.
05:04Luke Hines could be a threat from row five with no ballast, while Butler Henderson's aiming for another top ten finish.
05:09Bentwood's next, ahead of James Kay, who suffered a swipe from Matt Neill in race two.
05:13Carl Breeze has not made the top ten today, nor has Watson Smith, while Justin Keane's BMW starts 13th alongside the Cars World MG of Jason Hughes.
05:21Some quick cars start at the back in the shape of Collard, Huff and Kelvin Burt, but will they be able to make any impression on a circuit covered in oil?
05:30Dan Eves starting from pole position with Jason Plato alongside him.
05:35Who is going to make the start?
05:37The both cars carrying lots of ballast now and watch out for Matt Neill from the second row.
05:41Away we go.
05:42Quite an even start.
05:42James Thompson gets away very well on the inside and as they head down towards Old Hall Corner, it's very even still.
05:48Dan Eves just with the advantage, Plato going on the outside, Matt Neill's up into third place.
05:53But James Thompson's on the charge as well and heading down towards Cascades, there's nothing to call between them.
05:59Dan Eves still just in front, Plato down the inside.
06:02Oh, what a move from Jason Plato, squeezes Dan Eves out and Muller, where's he come from?
06:07I told you to watch out for him, but I didn't expect him to be in second place from row four on the first lap.
06:13Well, a very even start, but poor Dan Eves got totally mugged down at Cascades with guards flying left, right and centre.
06:20A great start, as you say, by Plato now.
06:23He made that decisive move, but he's going to struggle with the weight.
06:26Muller now is going to be the one that's pushing really hard.
06:28He struggled with the weight in the last race, but here we go on the oil for the first time.
06:32This is going to be so difficult for them now on the oil.
06:36Turkington's have been wide through there.
06:38Chilton, I think, may have missed half him as a result.
06:40I'm not sure if Chilton already had that place.
06:42And so far, so good.
06:43They're all safely through there, trying to stay off the oil where possible.
06:47It's Plato from Muller with Dan Eves, and was Matt Neill and Dan Eves third and fourth.
06:52Then James Thompson in fifth place.
06:54Tom Chilton in sixth place.
06:56Colin Turkington in seventh.
06:57Then it's Luke Hines, Charlie Butler-Henderson, and Michael Bentwood are top ten.
07:01Then in the eleventh, it's Sean Watson-Smith, and we're riding with Watson-Smith now.
07:05That's Michael Bentwood to our right, heading down towards Lodge corner.
07:08Bentwood's on the oily surface on the inside, and he slides out into Watson-Smith,
07:13pushes him wide onto the grass, and he just gets on again.
07:17Look at Matt Neill now, challenging for second place.
07:19He's taken advantage of a better line through Lodge, and he's got the run.
07:23He's going to clearly get that second place.
07:25Yeah, Matt Neill into second position, gets past Ivan Muller,
07:29and now can he do anything about Jason Plater who leads,
07:32or is Muller going to come back at him?
07:34Muller's on the inside for Cascades, side by side into the left-hander.
07:38Great stuff.
07:38Now coming out, and Neill being squeezed out,
07:41but he's still foot hard on the throttle.
07:44Muller gets back in the second.
07:45Well, Muller wasn't as charitable as Anthony Reid was in the very first race
07:49when Matt Neill tried that move around the outside,
07:51and fairly predictably, having just lost to place,
07:53Muller just gave him enough of a tap to put him on the grass
07:56and make him lose momentum.
07:58So back to where we were.
07:59Thompson now putting Dan Eves under pressure just ahead.
08:02Look, as they came up by Clay Hill there,
08:04it was definitely James Thompson trying to get the run on Eves.
08:07Eves there with a bit of damage to the left front as well.
08:11You can see that front wing has peeled back,
08:13and it's causing Dan Eves, costing him some time, I'm sure,
08:16and it means that both Thompson's through,
08:18and I think Chilton may have a run as they come up towards Lodge,
08:21but again, he has to try and stay off the oil.
08:24Yeah, Danny's struggling, as we expected,
08:26with the car very heavy from his success in the last race.
08:29Chilton is running a minus 15 kilos of ballast,
08:33so he should be able to get past.
08:35Yeah, but can he find the slot?
08:37That's the problem.
08:38Danny's doing the job of protecting his line,
08:41and that makes it tough,
08:42and it means that Turkington's closing up as well into that battle,
08:45and so Chilton has to watch his mirrors at the same time.
08:48Is he going to go for the lunge down the inside?
08:50No, not quite there,
08:51and it's a good run from Turkington here.
08:53Turkington's really run the perfect line through Cascades,
08:56and now he's got a chance to get alongside,
08:58but it does put him to the outside, into the hairpin.
09:01Down they come towards this first gear corner.
09:03They're only doing about 30 miles an hour around here,
09:05but it all gets a bit tight,
09:07and Turkington trying to move all the way around the outside of Chilton.
09:10Yes, great side-by-side racing,
09:13and are we going to see a repeat of Plato
09:15driving a fantastic defensive race
09:17like he did at Thruxton the very first meeting?
09:19Oh, contact there!
09:20That was a touch by Chilton.
09:22Now, Eves has got to slow down
09:24because he's gaining an advantage.
09:26No, he's going to come out even-steven,
09:28so he should be able to hold that place.
09:30Well, it's all happening there.
09:31This was the view from onboard Turkington.
09:33There was Eves ahead,
09:34and Tom Chupfrake too late
09:36bounced into the back of Danny's
09:38who shot across the grass
09:39that was able to rejoin.
09:41Our lead is still very close.
09:43It's Plato versus Muller versus McNeil.
09:46The three of them tied together now
09:47as Plato continues to defend the lead.
09:50Can he hold off from Ivan Muller?
09:52What a challenge this is.
09:53The two great rivals of the past
09:55who had such a falling out in 2001,
09:58but they're still racing wheel-to-wheel,
10:00side-by-side through Lodge.
10:01Muller with the inside line.
10:03Plato squeezed out wide,
10:04and it could be that McNeil gets him as well.
10:06Yes, he does.
10:07Muller takes the lead.
10:09McNeil moves up to second,
10:10and now Plato's got to watch out for James Thompson.
10:13Well, this is going to be a great battle now
10:15between McNeil and Muller.
10:17Muller just got enough of an overlap
10:19coming down towards Lodge out of Druids
10:21and forced the issue,
10:22took Mac with him.
10:24Great racing then,
10:25but problems, I'm afraid,
10:26for Rob Huff.
10:27It looks as though his race is all run.
10:29Let's hope that Jason Plato
10:31can uphold set on a still,
10:32even though he's been pushed down the order.
10:33Now we're on board with Colin Turkington,
10:35and it's all very physical again in front of him
10:37between Chilton and Eves.
10:39Chilton on the inside.
10:40Turkington just giving him a little nudge
10:42into the hairpin there
10:43on the exit of the corner,
10:45trying to get back up the inside.
10:46Where's...
10:47Oh, it's Collard!
10:48I thought it was Eves,
10:48but it's Rob Collard
10:49suddenly appeared out of nowhere,
10:51and he's shot up to the front of this group.
10:54Fantastic racing by Rob Collard.
10:56I mean, he is just flying.
10:57He loves to race.
10:59He doesn't like getting punted off.
11:00He doesn't like the contact,
11:01but what a drive
11:02to get to the front of this group.
11:04That is amazing.
11:05He started at the back of the grid, remember.
11:07He was on the last rope at one.
11:09He started in 17th place, 18th place,
11:13and he's all the way up there now.
11:15He's managed to get to the head of that group,
11:17and I think that's put him into 5th place now.
11:19That's remarkable
11:20as we watch the leaders come out of Druids,
11:22kicking up dust and dirt.
11:24That was Plato.
11:25He ran wide and put a wheel over the curve,
11:27and it destroyed the front splitter.
11:29You can see he's destroyed the front splitter
11:30and the air intakes,
11:31crucially for his brakes.
11:33So not only is he now running very heavy
11:35from his win from the last...
11:37or from his second place in the last race,
11:38he's now destroyed his brake cooling.
11:40That's going to really cost him heavy...
11:43heavily in the rest of this race.
11:45He's dragging it underneath, I think, too,
11:46and that's really going to hurt.
11:48Oh, that's good in a way.
11:49He's run over the curb.
11:50We almost wonder if he did that on purpose
11:51to clear it.
11:53Let's just see what happened up at Druids.
11:55Now, Plato came in, turned in nicely,
11:57hit the first apex through here in fourth gear,
11:59but then ran wide over the curb there,
12:02and there are some raised sections of that curb,
12:04and they've ripped off the splitter,
12:06and that's what's done the damage
12:07to Plato's car, sadly.
12:10Through the hairpin they come now.
12:11Oh, and off goes Charlie Butler-Henderson.
12:13Butler-Henderson just shooting across
12:15from one side of the track to the other.
12:17Not quite sure what happened.
12:18Let's take another look on board here.
12:20The car just suddenly veers off.
12:22There must have been some sort of failure there
12:24because he wasn't hit by anybody.
12:26He was just applying the power
12:27out of a slow corner.
12:29Look at this.
12:30Even further back,
12:31we've got Justin Keane in the battle here.
12:33We've got James Kaye and Luke Hines.
12:36Oh, and off goes Justin Keane,
12:38and surely that's into the tyre barrier.
12:41Well, that's a shame for Keane.
12:42Meanwhile, we're on board.
12:44Sean Watson-Smith here,
12:45and now he's under attack from James Kaye.
12:47James Kaye slips through,
12:48makes it look very easy,
12:50and Watson-Smith now under pressure
12:51from Luke Hines
12:53as they head down through the avenue
12:55down towards Cascades,
12:56but I'm afraid it's all over for Jason Plato.
12:59The damage done to his car,
13:01too much to continue,
13:02and despite leading earlier on,
13:03he's out, he's gone.
13:05Well, Matt Neal's going to be very pleased
13:07with his day if he finishes there.
13:08This will be his biggest point haul
13:10of the year so far
13:12at one meeting
13:13with a third in the first race,
13:14a fourth in the second,
13:15and now lying second here.
13:17He's really taken a good big points haul,
13:19and that's what we really want to see
13:20all year is Matt taking the fight
13:22to the two voxels
13:24who have been so dominant.
13:25Look at the damage to Harriman's car.
13:27Well, he's had a big sideways impact
13:30with something, hasn't he?
13:31The car doesn't even appear
13:32to be going in a straight line,
13:33and that's a shake.
13:34Kelvin Pert's had a real struggle
13:36this weekend with blown engines
13:38and a radiator that was broken.
13:40He got out in this race,
13:41but he's not getting a finish again.
13:44It's Ivan Muller
13:45who's looking to make it
13:47a double win here
13:48at Alton Park today,
13:49and that will bring him
13:51up to the same tally of wins
13:53as his teammate, James Thompson.
13:55So keeping it all even,
13:57Stephen, as we continue
13:58throughout the season,
13:59really is nothing to choose
14:01between these two star drivers.
14:03James came into the meeting
14:04with three wins.
14:05Ivan Muller came in with just one,
14:07but now he's going to even the score
14:08with the two wins here
14:09at Alton Park.
14:11But it's not been a bad weekend
14:12for Thompson.
14:12I think he'll be pretty satisfied,
14:14keeping Ivan Muller
14:15very much within reach.
14:18And for Matt Neill as well,
14:19it's been an extremely solid weekend,
14:21very positive for Honda
14:22and for the team with a win
14:24for his teammate earlier on today.
14:26But it's Ivan Muller
14:26who comes through
14:28to take the chequered flag
14:29at Alton Park
14:30for the second time today.
14:32Matt Neill follows him home
14:33in second place.
14:34James Thompson takes third
14:35and the hero of race three
14:37is Rob Collard
14:38who finishes in fourth position
14:40after a stirring drive
14:42from the very back of the grid.
14:43But let's just see
14:44what happens between
14:45Watson Smith and Hines.
14:46Up to the last corner
14:47can Luke Hines beat him
14:48to the line for 10th place.
14:50Quick out of Lodge corner.
14:51It's hard to call.
14:53Watson Smith will try
14:54and pin him off.
14:54I think he's got just enough
14:56or has he?
14:56They're not at the line yet now.
14:57They are.
14:58And the decision
15:00hasn't come up on...
15:01Oh, yes, it has.
15:02There we are.
15:02It comes up on screen
15:03and it's Watson Smith
15:04who gets the decision
15:05for 10th place.
15:07So Muller matches
15:08Thompson's win tally
15:09while Matt Neill
15:10completes a run
15:11of three strong results
15:12and wins the Harriers
15:13Euros independent category
15:14for the second time today.
15:16Rob Collard
15:16earns his best ever
15:17overall finish
15:18despite starting 18th
15:19and race two winner
15:20Dan Eves finished
15:21in eighth
15:22just as Muller did
15:23when he was carrying
15:24full ballast
15:25in race two.
15:27Every inside line
15:29was full of oil
15:30so Jason was closing
15:31a bit the door
15:32which was normal
15:33and to overtake
15:34it was hard.
15:35And then it was oil
15:35again for the last five laps
15:37because we reduced
15:38quite a lot the speed
15:39and it was a bit oil
15:40everywhere
15:41so that was a bit
15:42dodgy as well.
15:43I do know.
15:44I've got a funny feeling
15:45in my water this morning
15:46that I wasn't going to win
15:46a race today.
15:47I was hoping
15:47and I thought,
15:48well, we've got some good chances
15:49because being at the front
15:50but I've just got a feeling
15:51and we've come away
15:51with a fourth, a third
15:52and a second
15:52and just sort of
15:53we've peppered around
15:54the goal spot
15:55haven't we?
15:55But no, they've all driven well
15:58so Ivan had a bit of a bold
16:01manoeuvre on me
16:01down the inside of Cascades
16:02but I survived it
16:04so I'm not going to grumble
16:05about it
16:05and it was a good race
16:06between both Jimmy and Ivan.
16:08Once he got ahead of us
16:09being lighter
16:10there was no way
16:10to catch him
16:11I tried as hard as I could
16:12once I got past
16:13the old sparring partner
16:14Jase
16:14made a bit of a gap
16:16managed to hunt them down
16:17but just nothing left
16:19at the tank.
16:20Thanks to the point
16:21for fastest lap
16:21Thompson ties with Muller
16:23for the championship lead
16:24after 12 races
16:25but Matt Neill
16:26has moved past three
16:26to take third place
16:27Jason Plato's a non-mover
16:29at fifth
16:29whilst Dan Eves
16:30has climbed one place
16:32to sixth.
16:33VX Racing
16:33enjoyed two wins
16:34at Alton Park
16:35there was one
16:36for Competeach Racing
16:37with Halfords
16:37but WSR and the MGs
16:39are still waiting
16:40their first victory
16:41of 2004.
16:43Between them
16:43Matt Neill
16:44Dan Eves
16:44and Tom Chilton
16:45just managed to outscore
16:46Muller, Thompson and Hines
16:47but Vauxhall's still
16:48comfortably ahead
16:49in the chase
16:50for a fourth consecutive
16:51manufacturer's title
16:52and Anthony Reid
16:53was out of luck
16:53despite celebrating
16:54his 47th birthday
16:56last week
16:56he leads the Independence
16:57points from a rapidly
