Leeds locals give guidance to those receiving their A-Level results and reflect on how school has shaped their lives.

00:00A-level was a tricky one. I probably didn't really get the grades that I wanted to get,
00:04which I'm sure a lot of people would have a sort of a similar story.
00:07And ultimately, it feels sort of all-defining and all-consuming at the time,
00:11but then when it comes later on in life, sometimes you don't even really remember
00:15what results you got or what they were at all.
00:17And it sort of can be a big impact if you let it be a big impact,
00:21or you can make your own way if you don't quite get the results you want.
00:24I'd just say to them that as long as they've done the work and they've tried their best,
00:30if they don't get what they've hoped to get, then it's not the end of the world.
00:33There are always other routes that can go down.
00:36Didn't leave school with many things results-wise.
00:38I left with a stack of detention letters that my mum ended up burning once I'd left school.
00:44But A-levels are great if you are wanting to study a particular subject right
00:48and you're looking to try and get into a particular field of work.
00:51I'd say follow your passions in that respect.
00:53But don't get too held up if your friends have got a better result,
00:55if they're going off into different places in the world to study.
00:58Focus on yourself, wake up each morning knowing that each day is a new day
01:02and trust me, you don't need to get results to get ahead in life.
01:07I bought a property when I was 23 years old and probably out of my peer group was one of the first
01:11and came out of the school with probably the worst results.
01:14So, yeah, don't stress too much, follow your passion,
01:17work very, very hard at whatever it is you choose to do and the world's your oyster.
01:22You should be, like, happy about your results, even though if it's bad,
01:28because nothing will get you through, only your grades.
01:31And if your grades are bad, try to make it better for next year.
01:35So if you go to college, you can, like, be a doctor, engineer, whatever you would like to be.
01:41Believe in your beliefs and don't think you need to be a lawyer, an accountant.
01:46Get a trade behind you because a trade will supply the country
01:52because this country is backed up on construction.
01:55Once construction fails in this country, that's when you know we're going into a recession.
02:01Don't let it think this is the rest of my life.
02:04It's not the end of the world if you haven't got that qualification on paper.
02:07It's sometimes I think good things happen.
02:10These things happen for a reason.
02:11Just don't let it define the rest of your life if you haven't got on paper straight away.
02:16You've got plenty of time to do it.
02:17And I think there's more opportunities now for kids anyway.
02:22Just stay authentic.
02:23That's the best thing you can be is just be authentic and the world will come to you early.
02:28My results were quite average, but it shaped me on the way that I've made friends for life.
02:34And we've been friends for, so I'm 53 now, so I've been friends every single school days.
02:39And I think all those friendships that carry you through good and bad through life
02:44definitely shape how I make decisions and what do I do.
02:49So yeah, this school day was really important for me because I made friendships for life.
02:55But the results?
02:57No, I don't remember the results much.
02:59No, I don't remember the results.
