01:30The
01:59tonight with David Muir. Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here on a Monday night.
02:04We do begin tonight with the breaking news coming in now. There's been a deadly shooting at a Target,
02:08multiple people dead. This happened outside of Target in Austin, Texas. The shooter then leading
02:13police on a chase across the city. The Target on the north side of Austin just a week before school
02:18starts there. Families and their back-to-school shopping underway. 9-1-1 calls of an active
02:23shooter coming in just before 3 p.m. local time. Officers flooding the scene. Stunned shoppers
02:28escorted through that parking lot right there. Tonight, what we have learned, the suspect is now
02:33in custody and what we know about the victims. ABC's Matt Guppin leading us off tonight.
02:38Tonight, three people pronounced dead after a shooting outside this Target in North Austin and
02:43a wild chase across the city involving at least two carjackings. The incident unfolding this
02:49afternoon amid a slew of 9-1-1 calls. The suspect is armed and has shot multiple people. Just before
02:563 p.m. local time, social media showing a massive response at this Target just a week before the
03:02school year resumes in Austin. I hear on the radio shots fire. So then, you know, they just told us
03:09active shooter. When officers arrived, they were met with three people that were shot inside the parking
03:16lot of Target. By then, the suspect had already fled. It was in the Target parking lot where the first car
03:22was taken. The second car, the first car crashed. The subject then ran into, I believe it was a
03:28Volkswagen dealership to take another car. Police apparently losing track of the suspect until a
03:33bystander in South Austin called police for assistance nearly an hour later and clear on the
03:39other side of the Texas Capitol. And David, police say they're still investigating the motive for this
03:44shooting. Now, they say that this was a 32-year-old white male suspect with a rap sheet and a history of
03:50mental health issues. David. And just days before the school year starts with so many families there
03:54shopping, Matt Gubbin leading us off tonight. Matt, thank you. We are also following a deadly
03:58explosion at a U.S. steel plant south of Pittsburgh, killing one worker, injuring at least 10 others.
04:04Tonight here, a time lapse of the surveillance video that actually captured the blast right there.
04:09Witnesses describing a very loud boom, the smoke triggering air quality concerns tonight.
04:13The explosion inside the facility ripping through a wall. You can see that charred pickup truck.
04:18At least one person still unaccounted for at this hour. There is a search underway right now.
04:23Stephanie Ramos is on the scene outside Pittsburgh tonight.
04:27Tonight, authorities urgently searching through the rubble at this U.S. steel plant south of Pittsburgh
04:32after an explosion ripped through the facility, killing at least one person and leaving another
04:37unaccounted for.
04:38Report an explosion on multiple injuries.
04:41There's possible entrapment under the rubble.
04:43Ten others injured, including one person. Officials say they recovered alive from under
04:48the debris.
04:49Efforts are very focused on rescue at this point.
04:52Time lapse video capturing the blast at the Clareton Coke Works plant shortly before 11 a.m.
04:57It sounded like a really big bang. And then there was big black smoke.
05:01Nearby residents advised to stay inside because of air quality concerns.
05:05The concern is for folks who have asthma or some kind of pre-existing condition and also for children.
05:11Earlier today, Tricia Quinn telling reporters her brother Timothy, a father of three, was working at the plant.
05:17He has three kids that are messaging me every two minutes and we need answers.
05:25Her worst fears tragically realized.
05:27Telling our affiliate WTAE late today, Timothy was the victim who lost his life.
05:33And David authorities are still here on the scene.
05:36Earlier this year, two workers at this same plant were injured after a buildup of combustible material ignited.
05:43In a statement today, U.S. Steel says they are investigating this incident and that employees' safety is its top priority.
05:50David.
05:50Stephanie Ramos, just outside Pittsburgh for us tonight on the scene.
05:53Steph, thank you.
05:55Also, just in tonight, the images of a small plane coming in for landing in Montana,
05:58going right off the runway and then crashing into multiple planes.
06:02Here's ABC's Trevor Ault.
06:03Tonight, a dramatic scene on a Montana runway after officials say a small plane collided into another aircraft shortly after landing.
06:13There is a two-plane crash at the Kalispell Municipal Runway.
06:17We do have two planes on fire at this time.
06:19Thick black smoke rising above Kalispell, Montana.
06:23You can see a large fire stretching down this part of the runway.
06:25The fire chief tells ABC News a single-engine plane with four passengers on board crash-landed at Kalispell City Airport and careened off the runway,
06:35striking an unoccupied small single-engine plane and several others.
06:39Miles Terry was eating lunch nearby and saw the plane flying in.
06:43I was watching a plane fly in, and then a few seconds later I saw an explosion.
06:49David, two passengers were treated for minor injuries, and somehow several others walked away unharmed.
06:55The FAA is now investigating.
06:56David.
06:57Trevor Ault with these late images coming in.
06:59Trevor, thank you.
07:00Tonight, just four days now before the high-stakes summit, President Trump and Vladimir Putin.
07:04And this evening here, what the president now says he'll say to Putin.
07:07And what President Trump said today when asked about President Zelensky not being there and the future of Ukraine.
07:13Here's Martha Raddatz tonight.
07:15Tonight, with the historic summit in Alaska just days away, President Trump seemingly downplaying what could come of it.
07:23But tonight, saying his message to the Russian president will be clear.
07:28I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin, and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war, you've got to end it.
07:35The president, though, lowering expectations.
07:38This is really a feel-out meeting a little bit.
07:41While Ukraine's President Zelensky has insisted he will not trade territory for peace, President Trump said again today there will be land swaps.
07:51Three years after the Russian invasion, this is the Ukrainian land the Russians now control.
07:57The question is, will President Trump agree with Putin, who believes that land is now his?
08:03The future of Ukraine will likely be discussed by just Trump and Putin without Zelensky in the room.
08:10Volodymyr Zelensky is not invited on Friday?
08:13He wasn't a part of it.
08:15I would say he could go, but he's gone to a lot of meetings.
08:18You know, he's been there for three and a half years.
08:19Nothing happened.
08:21But it was Putin who invaded Ukraine, and he'll be at the table with President Trump.
08:26Tonight, Trump vowing to call Zelensky first after his face-to-face with Putin.
08:32I'm going to meet with President Putin, and we're going to see what he has in mind.
08:38And if it's a fair deal, I'll reveal it to the European Union leaders and to the NATO leaders and also to President Zelensky.
08:47I think out of respect, I'll call him first, and then I'll call them after.
08:52And I may say, lots of luck.
08:54Keep fighting.
08:56Or I may say, we can make a deal.
08:58So let's bring in Martha Raddatz with us live tonight.
09:00Martha, the location of this summit in Alaska is also an interesting choice, obviously, given the history here between the U.S. and Russia involving Alaska.
09:07And as you point out tonight, this will be just President Trump and Vladimir Putin.
09:12President Zelensky will get a phone call after.
09:14Well, David, the location for the summit is interesting.
09:17The U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867.
09:22And, David, President Trump had wanted Zelensky at the meeting.
09:25It was Putin who nixed the idea.
09:27But President Trump said he is still hopeful the three can meet in the future.
09:32And, again, he has promised that his first call after the meeting will be to Zelensky.
09:37David.
09:38Martha Raddatz, who will be on the air with me here on Friday covering this summit.
09:41We'll look forward to that, Martha.
09:42I'll see you then.
09:43In the meantime, we turn to Washington, D.C. now, where President Trump has ordered the National Guard to take over policing in the nation's capital.
09:51Tonight, the mayor there pushing back with the crime stats and what they actually show.
09:56Here's Mary Bruce.
09:57For the first time in American history, the president seizing control of the police in the nation's capital and deploying hundreds of National Guardsmen.
10:06Trump says to fight crime on the streets of Washington, D.C.
10:10I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor.
10:18And worse, this is Liberation Day in D.C. and we're going to take our capital back.
10:26President Trump declaring a public safety emergency in D.C., painting an apocalyptic picture.
10:32Adamant crime is spiraling out of control.
10:36But his depiction stands in stark contrast to the official figures, which show crime in the capital is actually in decline.
10:43Violent crime recently hitting a 30-year low, down 26 percent since last year.
10:49Burglary, down 19 percent.
10:52Murder, down 12 percent.
10:54Still, the president said today the D.C. police will now be able to do whatever they want.
10:59They're standing there and people are spitting in their face and they're not allowed to do anything.
11:05But now they are allowed to do whatever the hell they want.
11:08Mayor Muriel Bowser today acknowledging her hands are tied.
11:11D.C. is not a state, and the president does have the authority to take over the city's police department.
11:18While this action today is unsettling and unprecedented, I can't say that given some of the rhetoric of the past, that we're totally surprised.
11:29The president has shown an eagerness to use military force in major cities.
11:34Earlier this summer, sending 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to quell immigration protests in Los Angeles.
11:41And tonight, he's threatening to do this to other cities, saying the model in Washington, D.C. could be used to combat crime in cities like Chicago, Oakland, and Baltimore.
11:51All cities notably in Democratic-led states.
11:55We're not going to lose our cities over this, and this will go further.
12:00So let's bring in Mary Bruce. You heard him say this could go further.
12:04So, Mary, how soon could we see National Guard troops on the streets of the Capitol?
12:07Any idea for how long? And, of course, that threat to do this to other cities as well.
12:12Well, David, 800 National Guard troops are now being called up.
12:15They will be on hand in the coming week, we're told, working on a rotating basis to support law enforcement.
12:21It's not clear how long they will be on the streets of this city,
12:23but the president has said he's willing to go even further and bring in additional military forces if needed.
12:29David.
12:30Mary Bruce, who, of course, will continue to follow this. Mary, thanks.
12:33Next tonight, Tropical Storm Aaron. We're watching it closely.
12:35Will it become the first hurricane in the Atlantic?
12:38The potential tracks right here tonight, and, of course, some of them bring them very close to the East Coast.
12:43So, of course, let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Ginger Z.
12:45I'm studying the models already. Ginger, what do they show?
12:47Hi, David. Tropical Storm Aaron is way out there in the Atlantic, but it's cruising west at 21 miles per hour.
12:55By Saturday, it does look like it won't only just be a hurricane, but a major hurricane, potentially, north and east of the Caribbean.
13:02Now, this is the potential track that takes it between Bermuda and the United States,
13:06and we have it that way because 90 percent of the computer modeling right now, the spaghetti plots, have it curving away.
13:12It's driven, in part, by that high-pressure system that we look this time of year for to steer these currents, but also the cold front.
13:20So if it squeezes between the two, that would be the best and most ideal situation away from most land.
13:25We're going to be watching really carefully, though, because every little deviation west or east will make a big difference.
13:30The other big headline, daily record high temperatures possible tomorrow from Burlington right up to Caribou, Maine.
13:35David.
13:36You have the potential for another heat wave now. Ginger, thank you. We'll see you on GMA in the morning.
13:39Next, tonight, we turn overseas. An Israeli airstrike has killed six journalists in Gaza and what Israel is now claiming about one of the journalists.
13:47Many asking, where is the proof? Here's our chief international correspondent, James Longman, tonight.
13:54As Israel prepares for a military occupation of Gaza City,
13:58it's facing growing condemnation tonight for the targeted strike on a group of Palestinian journalists in their tent outside a hospital.
14:06Allahu Akbar.
14:07Emotional funerals today to remember prominent Al-Jazeera news correspondent Anas al-Sharif,
14:12four of his colleagues and another freelancer.
14:16Al-Sharif's press fest laid on top of his body as he's carried through the streets.
14:20Israel has defended the strike, calling Al-Sharif a terrorist who helped Hamas launch rocket attacks.
14:26But Al-Jazeera and the Committee to Protect Journalists say they have no proof.
14:30Israel is being allowed to tell us that it's murdering journalists and to get away with it.
14:38Al-Sharif, who had a young family, gained millions of followers online documenting the war,
14:43while Israel bars international journalists from Gaza.
14:47He's the 184th journalist killed there by Israel since the war began.
14:52This is the IDF launches new strikes into Gaza, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defends his controversial plan to occupy Gaza City.
15:01Israel has no choice but to finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas.
15:06And David, Donald Trump has stopped short of endorsing that occupation plan,
15:10but he has repeated tonight that Hamas must leave Gaza.
15:14David?
15:14James Longman reporting from London tonight.
15:16James, thank you.
15:17Back here in the U.S. tonight, a federal judge has denied the Trump administration's motion
15:20to release grand jury testimony from the criminal case against Jeffrey Epstein co-conspirator Glenn Maxwell.
15:27In a scathing rebuke, the judge saying there's nothing in that testimony that isn't already public,
15:32suggesting the administration's request might be an intentional diversion
15:35and an illusion of transparency, according to that judge.
15:39Tonight, the CDC telling its staff the Atlanta shooting that killed a police officer
15:43and damaged a number of its buildings on Friday was a, quote, targeted attack.
15:47Police say a 30-year-old Georgia man, Patrick Joseph White, blamed the COVID-19 vaccine
15:52for making him sick and depressed.
15:54He died during his attack.
15:56More than 10,000 CDC employees nationwide told to work from home for now,
16:00as officials assess any further threat.
16:02Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic,
16:05met with CDC leaders at its headquarters today.
16:08When we come back here tonight, the victory celebration cuts short.
16:11The NASCAR star badly injured after a major win when he fell off of his car,
16:16and you'll see it here.
16:17Also, the scare in the water tonight.
16:19Surfers told to clear the way, a 75-foot passenger boat right there.
16:22This is incredible, running aground in rough seas.
16:25And there's news tonight about the death of Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband,
16:27the father of her children.
16:29The cause of death now revealed in a moment here.
16:33Tonight here, harrowing images showing a scare in the waters off Honolulu,
16:36a 75-foot passenger boat caught in rough waves, running aground.
16:40The Coast Guard clearing the area near Kiwala Basin Harbor.
16:43Surfer, swimmers, boaters all told to keep their distance.
16:46Witnesses say they thought the boat was going to capsize.
16:48There were two people on board.
16:50They were not hurting us.
16:51Well, a difficult moment tonight for a NASCAR star.
16:53A short-lived celebration for NASCAR driver Connor Zilish,
16:56a 19-year-old rising star.
16:58He was standing on his car in Victory Lane right there
17:00after his big win at Watkins Glen International.
17:03You see he lost his footing, falling to the ground.
17:05He broke his collarbone.
17:06His next scheduled race is in two weeks.
17:09There's no word yet tonight on when he'll return.
17:11We wish him a speedy recovery.
17:13When we come back here tonight, there's news this evening
17:15about the death of Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband,
17:17the father of her children, the cause of death now revealed.
17:20And you have to see this tonight.
17:22A 100-year-old World War II pilot back in the sky tonight
17:25and his message for all of you at home watching.
17:29To the index, the cause of death revealed
17:31for Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock,
17:33the father of her children.
17:34The coroner's report showing he died from melanoma,
17:37a form of skin cancer.
17:38He was her manager after she won American Idol.
17:40He died at home in Montana, surrounded by family.
17:43The family saying he bravely battled cancer
17:45for more than three years.
17:46Clarkson postponing her Las Vegas residency
17:48to be with their children.
17:50When we come back here tonight,
17:51the 100-year-old World War II pilot back in the sky
17:54with a message for all of you at home tonight.
17:58ABC World News Tonight with David Muir,
18:01sponsored by Progressive.
18:04Finally tonight here, the World War II pilot
18:06taking flight again.
18:08America strong.
18:09Tonight in McKinleyville, California,
18:12the extraordinary honor for a World War II fighter pilot
18:15back in the air, back in a fighter plane once again.
18:18Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Joe Peterburz
18:21flew the famed P-51 Mustangs during combat.
18:24Mustangs coming in at 8 o'clock.
18:26Enlisting at 18 years old back in 1942,
18:29he'd earn his pilot wings becoming a second lieutenant.
18:31He would fly 49 combat missions during the war,
18:35including one where he was captured by the Germans
18:37after being forced to eject.
18:39He would eventually escape.
18:41The Mustangs, far in the distance,
18:42sweep the surrounding sky as they come in.
18:45He would go on to serve in the Korean War,
18:46flying 76 combat missions,
18:48serving throughout the Cold War in Vietnam,
18:51retiring as a colonel in 1969.
18:53And tonight, at 100 years old,
18:57Colonel Peterburz and the new recognition.
19:00The retired colonel climbing back into a P-51 Mustang,
19:03the same type of plane he flew for more than 125 missions,
19:06all thanks to the non-profit Rumble Over the Redwoods.
19:10The pilot taking the colonel up in the air,
19:13rolling the Mustang,
19:16waving from high in the air back in the sky once again,
19:19and right here tonight.
19:20Good evening, David.
