Political Analyst Professor Hamid Ghany shares his candid assessment of the government's first 100 days in office.

He says there was no honeymoon period as the administration had to hit the ground running. Ghany points to the surge in violent crime as clear evidence of the country's urgent challenges, which he says the UNC is tackling.

Nicole M Romany has more.

00:00Professor Ghani notes the ongoing debate surrounding the current state of emergency,
00:05especially since the former government also declared one just months before leaving office.
00:12Today, however, he says, the country is facing a reckoning as it relates to crime,
00:17and the government is doing what is required, the state of emergency.
00:21I think that the fact that two different administrations have had to call a state of emergency in the same year
00:27is reflective of the depth of the crime situation in the country.
00:31I think for me, it matters not who caused a state of emergency.
00:36I think that the public in general knows what the situation is outside there.
00:41According to Professor Ghani, the government has kept most of its campaign promises.
00:46He believes the administration will also strive to fulfill its 10% commitment to the Public Services Association.
00:54However, he tells the morning edition that the best assessment of the government's performance can only be made a little later on.
01:02Their budget is going to come in September, October, and that's when I think people are going to start lighting fires to put feet to fire
01:10and seeing where the rubber is going to hit the road.
01:15And I think that that is something that we need to watch,
01:18and I will start the clock running with regard to the assessment of performance from them.
01:22Still, he says, Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissasa is operating very differently from her first term.
01:29He says she is setting her own agenda.
01:32It's a different ballgame, with no cabal influencing her decisions.
01:37On a separate note, he is raising questions about ongoing developments within the People's National Movement camp.
01:44Dr. Rowley, despite resigning, continues to make public commentary,
01:48which I think convolutes some of the PNM messaging,
01:51because you have the official message from the leader of the opposition and others.
01:55And then you have Dr. Rowley making his own statements, calling press conferences at his home,
01:59and inviting reporters and so on.
02:02So I think that that kind of parallel messaging from him is not helping them.
02:07And I think they've got to work that out internally.
