Transcript
00:00some sort of a red sox celebration over the roman anthony deal i oh yeah i don't i maybe the socks
00:05on that one huh maybe leah anthony coughed up a couple million dollars for fireworks to celebrate
00:11her brother right it's worth it uh what a day yesterday so you got your new england patriots
00:18head coach getting into scuffles at training camp and and the red sox pulled the trigger
00:24on a 10-year deal with roman anthony and that gives us a lot to talk about this morning on this
00:33show but good uh good news for red sox fans i think and at a bargain yeah yeah i mean i mean
00:40the argument would be you could have kept him at a bargain before you had to do this deal now but i
00:45love the fact that they do it now and you look at craig breslow sitting next to him during the presser
00:49yesterday and he is looking happy like craig breslow's looking around like all right all of
00:55you guys we've been winning yes they didn't win last night but overall they've been performing well
01:00now we locked up this guy for 10 years he's the future of our franchise like everybody should
01:05you know the booze are getting are getting quieter for craig breslow yeah it's it's good and they spent
01:11the money right and you're able to get them out they didn't really spend the money get them out of
01:15it was 130 130 it could top out at 230 yeah and so you get him at a point where it's like okay
01:21he's young he clearly looks like he has talent you're able to maybe get ahead of that giant giant
01:28contract for you know a few years um and it shows that a guy who is a young up-and-coming star from
01:37your organization is able to get a deal and be here and say okay so now when his next contract comes
01:44rolling around it might be a little bit easier to say hey we can sign this guy because he's like
01:49you guys took care of me on the first go-around yeah he could have reached free agency following
01:54the 2030 year had they not consummated this deal so that's five years you know so i mean it's
02:02you got a couple extra years at the end it's great i'm happy they should sign them they should
02:06keep players that are great but it's not this is this falls in line with how they've been running
02:11their their company it's not a new pivot to spending more money it's this is what is going
02:16to be supported and endorsed in the new cba that is keeping your own homegrown guys curtis you can't
02:23deny that they made the devers trade and got rid of that money on the payroll and turned around maybe
02:30it was their intention all along to take some of that money and invest it in roman anthony well
02:36that's five million dollars they invested this year well this this year yeah i but the going
02:43forward i mean i when you get toward the end of the deal he's making 15 million dollars a year
02:48right it's just smart half of what devers is making so wait you're so your guess is they're not going to
02:53invest in anybody else over the next 10 years i mean that's a ridiculous statement so this season
02:58they saved 15 20 million dollars correct they're still up 15 is more likely but yes right
03:04so they're still up 15 million this year they bought out free agency years they have a bargain
03:09at the end of the deal which is great and they have the certainty of keeping him as a red sock when
03:13he answers free agency for the first couple years but well yeah and they got rid of it and they got
03:19rid of a guy who was think forward in the clubhouse and the team improved by doing so so i don't that's
03:26a different conversation we're talking about allocating resources no it's not a different conversation
03:31because it's a part of the whole thing when it comes to the way in which you're managing your
03:35ball club no you began this by saying that they're not reinvesting their money did you actually think
03:39they would not reinvest their money and i'm saying yes this is exactly how they've been doing business
03:43which is great but it's not a new way of investing this isn't signing a guy to a 10-year 250 million
03:50dollar deal this is someone that is not yet going to be in free agency for five full seasons in the
03:55offseason they signed a guy to a one-year 40 million dollar deal right short term not long term
04:02that's the way that they're going to try and do things in the new cda but long term during the before
04:06the season as well garrett crochet they got an extension to done a guy that was yet six years
04:10one years that's very similar to this yeah yeah i mean it's smart on their part but i think what
04:15they're doing is smart in baseball you know we had um uh was it heidi watney on and she was talking
04:21about the who was she talking about the player forget who she was talking about
04:25who was uh hamstringing the one of the organizations because they spent a ton of money on him i mean
04:32you so i think this is the way baseball wants to move as far as all owners they they want to get
04:38out of those 10 years look at mookie bets struggling this year these teams want to get out of the 10
04:45years three four five six hundred million the mets are invested into juan soto for 700 million yeah let's
04:53say he performs at a decent level at a good level the one soda level for five years then you're still
04:59on the hook for another five years at you know whatever that amount of money is if the guy's
05:05struggling it doesn't make sense it's not a good business model to do that smart business on their
05:11part when you have a guy like roman anthony and you suspect that he's going to be legit and going to be
05:18legit for a while but you're not a hundred percent certain so meet in the middle on right and i i
05:25just um i curtis i was like you i was wondering are they going to turn around and are they going to
05:31spend some of this money that they're saving on devers right on improving the ball club and not
05:37only improving it this season but improving it for the future and i don't think you can sit here and
05:42say that they did not and what did everybody complain about what is the biggest complaint
05:46what's the biggest complaint about the red sox they never take they never um they always let
05:52homegrown talent walk away they let them get away you know they did it with xander boguts they did it
05:57with this one so what they're doing they did it with christian campbell they did it with sedan
06:02raffaella now they're doing it with roman anthony um if myro probably stayed healthy and didn't get
06:08hurt he might have been next in line or maybe he is next in line next year or the following year
06:14so they're doing what everybody wanted them to do which is make sure you lock up homegrown talent
06:20well they had mookie bets for six years they'll have roman anthony for seven
06:24or eight it's a deal so there's still every possibility that when roman anthony's 30 he signs
06:31with another team like mookie bets did right but you at least you put him in a position if you look at
06:36you put him in a position where you didn't let and i don't think they gave a mookie bets an eight
06:42year 130 million dollar deal right so you'll get an extra two years of roman anthony before he hits
06:47i think they treated him similar to how they're treating jaron duran right look at jaron duran he's
06:51making what three and a half million almost four million dollars so it's like year in and year out
06:56where if you're if you're roman anthony you got that 130 million dollar contract as of right now
07:04as a 21 year old from an organization when you go all right maybe now when free agency comes
07:09we can have a better conversation versus just dragging me out year in and year out year in
07:15and year out like maybe mookie bets well i like it and you can
