Minister of Local Government Khadija Ameen says the country can expect some announcements soon, with certain initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the most vulnerable in society.

Speaking at the opening of a camp and home-work centre in Marabella on Wednesday morning, Minister Ameen criticised the last government for discontinuing initiatives like the baby grant.

She spoke with our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh, who tells us more.

00:00Far too many children are being forced into adulthood instead of enjoying their childhood,
00:05says local government Minister Khadija Amin. Citing data on the child poverty rate in TNT,
00:11Minister Amin says in 2025 there are children who don't go to school.
00:16There are many parents and families who are in such a serious economic situation, such poverty,
00:23that the children drop out of school either because the parents cannot afford to send them,
00:30even with free meals and free books, but also because those children earn a living for the
00:37household, no matter how small it is. They really are not allowed to be a child. They are forced into
00:44adulthood, forced into earning an income, and sometimes the family really has no choice.
00:49She says it is alarming to see the different grants, like the People's Partnerships Baby Grant
00:55that provided some relief to vulnerable families disbanded under the PNM. On Wednesday, she told
01:01TV6 News that the country can expect certain measures in the coming months aimed at the
01:06redistribution of resources to help those who need it most. You will have some announcements shortly
01:13She was speaking to reporters at the opening of a third camp and homework centre sponsored by San
01:33Fernando West MP Dr Michael Daulat, this time in Marabella, and in partnership with Swimcall to
01:40incorporate environmental consciousness. Alderman in the San Fernando City Corporation,
01:45Viljana Ramata Singh, expressed relief that such an initiative was ruled out,
01:50saying the aim is to help young people rise above their circumstances.
01:55We have a lot of single mothers. Single mothers have to work, and many work different shifts, casinos,
02:02KFC at night, and it's now impossible to leave and come back and teach homework, and they need the help.
02:08They need the help, and we have to uplift our children so that they can uplift themselves.
02:13Cindy Raguba, Tika Singh, TV6 News.
