Field Fire In Standing Corn
Transcript
00:00just a quick disclaimer before we start the video none of the burned equipment or field
00:14fires shown in this video are mine or grants these are things that happen to neighbors of
00:19ours so still close and in a community but I just wanted to clear up any confusion not ours
00:30well we're back in the combine are we surprised no you shouldn't be because we're in the very middle
00:41of harvest almost exactly the middle of harvest actually considering the fact that according to
00:48my math I don't know how accurate it is I'm using some rough numbers but I think we are halfway done
00:53with all the acres that we need to harvest so that's really exciting and that's combining corn
00:58soybeans and seed corn we're down a green cart we're having some problems with the PTO shaft
01:05and you need to have the PTO shaft on to run the augers to get the grain out of the green cart
01:11so we took that in to be fixed so right now yes I am still harvesting even though I don't have a
01:17green cart it's just maybe not quite as efficient so I have a semi truck and trailer on that side of
01:23the field and a semi truck and trailer on that side of the field so I am just picking until I'm full
01:30unloading into the truck going down picking until I'm full unloading into the truck and then I have
01:35dad running trucks back and forth between our grain system at the farm site and the field so we are no
01:42longer bringing things into the co-op we are bringing things back to our home storage facilities the grain
01:49bins that we have on the farm it's just a tad bit wet then we'd like to store it permanently or like
01:57for the next three to six to nine months and so we are putting it in a designated bin called the wet bin
02:04and then running it through the grain dryer which does exactly what you would guess it does it runs
02:09off propane and it blows hot air and moves the grain along until it's dry to like 15 and a half
02:1716 percent moisture and then it goes into the designated bin wherever we want it to go
02:22so we're harvesting today
02:25here's the cab view I'm hoping that that pivot is going to be out of my way I think it should be
02:35if I line it up straight I think we should miss it that's moving out of our way right now
02:40here's what I'm looking at for my monitor and I'm specifically looking at the moisture
02:47the yield and then making sure these sensors don't get into the yellow or the red areas
02:53and then obviously looking at my oil temperature and my fuel level and then my engine load so I'm
03:02not going too fast right now I'm not in too much of a hurry because I want to make sure that dad can
03:06keep up with me but I'm making sure that engine load doesn't get too high and then here is where
03:13I see how much grain I have back there
03:15do you think I can weasel my way under the pivot to get my auger
03:25into that truck we shall see oh yeah oh yeah I think we can make this work
03:36perfect
03:47I mean I'm pretty sure that combine isn't in my field
03:59okay
04:01I look so funny going down the road
04:04it was going so slowly and the corn is so tall across the two fields
04:10across the two fields I thought um for sure there was just another combine harvesting the field here
04:19we're good it's driving down the road
04:22it's kind of slow going but it's still working
04:28here's a little field sorry about the glare let's do a little field update
04:32here's our field the green stuff is what we've done
04:36so all outside all that not too shabby just uh plug and ride along here
04:43I uh went and grabbed some lunch for grant I was going to deliver it to him in the field
04:59um but then I was looking out of the corner of my eye I saw all of this smoke which was
05:08I was concerned about smoke this morning because it is so windy outside
05:14um 30 mile an hour sustained winds
05:17oh I just got goosebumps uh with gusts up to 50 miles an hour
05:22I'm just driving past combines and tractors and they're all stopped
05:28which in my mind means that everyone is out seeing what this is
05:35I'll show you what I'm looking at here
05:36I'm hoping that it's nothing but I mean it's definitely something
05:40this is what I'm looking at
05:43scary
05:45dad and I just hooked up um the disc on our field yesterday
05:52because fire is a huge concern this time of year because everything is super dry
05:58and there's lots of equipment moving around all the time
06:01um lots of heat I don't know it's just really scary and fields can go up in flames fast
06:08um and really all you can do is just disc around them
06:11so oh this looks really bad
06:14my main concern is that I hope everyone is okay
06:21we have a piece of equipment started on fire
06:24I hope that everyone was able to get out
06:29okay while they have a tractor out here
06:40oh my goodness
06:43yikes there's people walking around
06:50I think that combine started on fire
06:52I just got off the phone
07:07with the neighbor um and everyone's okay
07:11he said he was actually on the phone with the combine operator
07:14and he said I gotta go fire
07:16um hopped off the phone
07:18there's lots of tractors
07:20lots of discs
07:21no one was hurt
07:22um I don't know what the extent to the combine damage was
07:27but just a really scary thing
07:30the good thing that comes out of situations like this
07:35is neighbors coming together to help each other
07:38I mean they were here um on scene helping out immediately
07:43I just called more more people are on the way
07:46um and I know for a fact that if his combine is rendered useless
07:51I know people will come help him harvest
07:53and I love being able to see that
07:57so that's and
07:59well I was gonna say I mean
08:04oh I don't know
08:06it's scary though
08:07www
08:15I don't know
08:19I don't know
08:27I don't know
08:29Oh, my God.
08:59out. Hopefully they can contain whatever fire is burning before it spreads to other unharvested
09:07fields all right I'm just going to let firefighters do their job as always I'm incredibly thankful for
09:34them and the work that they do it's incredible so I'm just going to get out of their way let them do
09:41their job deliver grants lunch and we'll check back later. I delivered Grant's lunch and then I
09:51hopped in the green cart he is running trucks and I looked over there's another fire the other one
10:02was to the east this one is to the west it's just terrible
10:06kind of a crazy day
10:20um but overall a good one considering that no one was hurt
10:26we'll be harvesting until probably about nine o'clock tonight and everything seems to be going
10:34okay uh wild ride though so luckily that combine didn't burn down in the field fire from earlier
10:43however this is what a burned combine does look like again no one was injured um this incident
10:53actually happened overnight I think they had like a plugged head and things just got hot and
11:01overnight started on fire and the whole thing burned up there's silk clean grain um in the tank as you can
11:12see up there took a perfectly good new looking combine and made it look like it's been sitting in a junkyard
11:23for years and years and years
11:25there's the fire extinguisher
11:30look at this the back of it like melted off
11:36I got really really hot
11:46hopefully something like this never happens to me
12:02here's the aftermath of the first fire from yesterday
12:09burned ditch
12:11and then this cornfield all these endros were standing
12:15and they just went ahead and disked them under
12:17you can see all the full cobs of corn
12:19there
12:21but in total
12:2311 tractors hooked up to discs showed up
12:26um from area farmers
12:28and got things under control I think three or four different fire departments responded
12:33um
12:34I have a friend who lives just right down the road
12:37luckily I'm so glad his house didn't burn down
12:40um so from all this so thankful that no one got hurt
12:43um and we are blessed with
12:45very quick to act
12:47neighbors and farmers who are always willing to lend a hand
12:50and local fire departments with volunteer firefighters
12:53we're very lucky and fortunate
12:56so
12:57in the end
12:59all's well that ends well
13:01everything's gonna be okay
