Will This Old Tractor Survive A Tractor Pull

00:00I have never been to a tractor pull before.
00:05But from what I've heard, they can be pretty hard on equipment.
00:09Today, I'm taking my old tractor to a tractor pull, and we're going to see if she can survive.
00:15This is the tractor we're going to be taking to the tractor pull.
00:19It is a 1965 diesel John Deere 4020, and it came to us by way of a farm repossession.
00:27But it has been given new life here on our farm and put hard to work this summer.
00:34So far, it has been used to disc up a big patch for our sweet corn, mow down some pasture grass, as well as pump some water for us.
00:45And in that time, it's gotten pretty dirty.
00:48So before we put it on a trailer and take it to the tractor pull, we're going to get it all washed up.
00:54It's never going to look like all of the other built tractor pull tractors, but we can get it cleaned up.

06:49I started in 1972.
06:52Given in 1972, July 4th was my first pull.

07:02Yeah, we had stock 560, stock 806 at that time.

07:41On this good track with good sleds and a farm tractor, the way the sled works, it lets you
07:50get up and run so there's no pull in the first 100 feet.
07:53Then all of a sudden, it starts to pull down.
07:56So, basically, about as soon as it starts to pull down.
07:59Depends on how heavy it's set.

08:24Well, these are light super stock ag tractors.

08:31So, that's a class of pulling tractor.
08:33Actually, this was the light super stock tractors in the 70s, 80s, 90s.
08:41Even until a few years ago.
08:43Then, they decided that National went to a light super stock class.
08:50But, they're component tractors.
08:52Which, they're made truck for ends, different things like that.
08:57We have to stay cast iron tractors.

13:30This was another fellow's puller's trailer and they went and moved to a toter home.
13:37So when I heard that he was doing that, I called him up and, and he still had it for sale.
13:44And so, yep.
13:45And he had to slide out, but come on in.

13:52I just polished it and put the stripes on and put the stripes in the mirror.

14:46When do you think your first pull was?
14:48Well, the very first farm pull was back in about 83.
14:53I mean, it took a 1066 to Pleasanton, Nebraska, and we actually pulled on a street, kind of
15:01about the same thing, had duals and everything on, and that was a percentage sled.
15:06So it was just how much ever pressure was putting on the cylinder.
15:11And yeah, I kind of got the bug from there and, but, uh, yeah, back in the, oh, early
15:18mid two thousands, uh, Nebraska truck and tractor pullers had an association.
15:23I got nominated.
15:24I was president for two years of that in there.
15:27So you've been doing that.

15:37We had a geo and then we always had top off, but it was starting to get a little rusty.

16:54So I've had all my weights forward to keep the front end down.

17:00And I wish I had the frame and other things were wider on the tractor so I could have more
17:06movable weight.
17:07But, and there's also lawnmower weights underneath.
17:10There's about 320 pounds that are hidden underneath there, them smaller 40 pound weights.
17:21So is there like a weight limit you can't go over?
17:24Yeah.
17:25Or we, we can weigh up to 9,500 pounds.

17:29So you only have so much weight to move around.

17:33And you move it around based on track conditions?

19:18we also got a, on the injection pump here, we got a three-way valve here that is also controlled.
19:30I can dump the fuel to the ground so it isn't going if the pump, like the rack would stick wide open.
19:36So you're dumping the fuel to the ground instead of going into the injection pump.

19:47We had one, uh, cable that had to be in between, uh, the, uh, the last two cylinders.
19:57So if you're, would blow your head, the cable being in front will flip the, the head forward
20:04instead of blowing it to the side or to the back.

20:54So your, uh, intake wheel, if it would, uh, come apart is to keep, so the whole propeller
21:07doesn't come out of the front.
21:09We also got these blankets, so if the housing would blow up, it's SFI, both there, and then
21:19this is a new rule also on the intake pipe also.

21:27So there's a lot of safety stuff that's been thought of, but a lot of safety things
21:33have been brought into play because of a problem in the past.

21:42So we're here at the track right next to it, and it has been disked up, and now we are coming
21:50along and we're just kind of packing it in.
21:52We still have several steps to go.
21:54We're still going to grade it some more and pack it some more, and then we can check the
21:59conditions and we'll see what kind of weight we need to move on our tractor.

24:04bragging rights you know more than anything that we had it out of a field out
24:09of the field class where farmers would bring their tractors and they turn up the
24:14pumps and I've got a turbo on yeah but they get the injector pump and they turn
24:20it up and and it was more of just bragging rights you know between farmers
24:26that's probably more what I'm gonna be doing today or maybe just like trying to
24:32see if I can actually do it and I think I can can't be that hard right no just
24:37drive oh simple is that right yeah just go the furthest literally just open the
24:42throttle go I was told that second gear probably well I got all the way for
24:47signs and should be above four check your life insurance yeah Grant gets
24:55everything if I go so that's good I don't know why I'm driving it on him
25:04how's the track feeling tonight I hear that's pretty important track conditions
25:08yeah they don't want it they want it firm with the rain we've had recently I
25:13figured it'd be wet and it's drier than I thought it would be looking pretty nice to
25:19me I don't know that much but so far it looks good do you guys have to come in
25:25condition the track between every pull how do you make it sure yes for
25:28everybody so the box scrapers behind the tractors will come in and pull the
25:35tracks shut gotcha and a rut shut and then we'll try to pack it down and lay
25:40it down behind them and there'll also be a skid steer with a kind of a rake on the
25:50front okay that that it'll do right because if we're pulling going west right
25:57yes so the sluts will start on the east side of the track the skid steer takes the
26:05divots out right right in front of where the sleds start where they pull first
26:09okay that makes sense what's this thing what am I looking at it's a self-propelled
26:16packer it's so funny looking
26:21he looks so happy up there it's his oh gotcha okay he has a tractor pull or he
26:27has a tractor of his own he'll be I can't remember what that's Johnny you all I
26:32don't remember what well you can see yeah so read the back of his that's a
26:36given track I'm sure it's 55 55 years of a given tractor pull on wow some of the
26:43old guys like Larry Fox and Jim Sculler okay when you guys first they were out at the
26:5410 yeah yeah those guys were on some of the first
26:58like they've been here since the very beginning yes yes wow how cool and here we've got two sleds
27:09running tonight correct yes an orange one and a red one are they the same they'll be weighted the
27:18same see the weights on the ground right there oh yes I do so depending upon the class of the
27:24tractor the weight of the tractor the horsepower range of the tractor they they change the the
27:29amount of weights in the sled and that's as the sled goes down the track that weight box that you
27:37can see where it says red rock right from underneath the cab there that that advances and comes out well
27:43that puts more weight on the front of the sled thus offering more or more resistance brings the weight
27:51closer to the rear wheels of the tractor yeah harder to pull harder to pull yep is there ever a point
27:59where the like the actual sled sits on the ground too right yes gotcha is that just flat or is there
28:06stuff on the bottom do you know good question I believe I believe it's just flat but we have to go
28:12take a look at those ultimately the sledge job is to stop the tractor right yeah because it's kind
28:18of the sled versus the tractor yep and and then whoever goes the furthest distance wins in that class
28:24so uh say for instance they don't have it like weighted correctly or a tractor
28:31runs away that sled operator can also has a brake on the rear tires of the sled just
28:39for safety so the sled is the sled is always going to win yeah the sled wins no matter yeah it's not
28:46really yeah that makes sense our track is finally getting ready
28:53we're doing some testing and we're seeing exactly what will happen after every pull to get the track
29:00ready for the next tractor to come and do its run it's just a lot different I feel like an indoor show
29:08versus an outdoor show totally different situation yeah the smoke flies here yeah that's what I'm
29:16excited I'm hoping for a nice big cloud a black smoke that's what I'm that's what I'm hoping for
29:23here so besides the tractors this is the real star of the show the sled so there is an operator that sits
29:29in the back and he is in control the tractor gets hooked up with a big chain and starts pulling forward
29:37when they're ready and then there is a bunch of weights that start moving forward and adding weight
29:44onto the rear axle the back tires of the tractor and then eventually that trips a switch and this sled
29:53actually just sits and digs down into the dirt these tires will be lifted up completely off the ground
30:00which is what we're going to see later tonight they're still prepping the track but this is the sled
30:05that the 4020 is going to be hooked up to this thing is bigger than you think and weighs a ton and there's
30:11really tractors everywhere there's even a tractor cab on top of this thing for an operator to sit in
30:16there's even an engine that sits on top of so once the tractor gets to the end he will be unhooked and
30:22the sled will drive back down to this end of the track ready for the next pull these are some shields
30:28so dirt doesn't get flung all over the sled
30:46you know what they say grant race cars don't need headlights they just have stickers i don't i can't
30:58even fathom the size trucks at a tractor pull look at these things wow and the tires are so small

38:28not regret it now that i've got my two practice runs in it is time for the actual competition where

45:17As the night goes on, they continually add weight depending on the class is going.
