Trying To Drive A Tractor For 24 Hours
Transcript
00:00Good morning, everybody. It's bright and early in the morning. Let's spend 24 hours in a tractor cab
00:05together. Corn is getting taller, there's rain on the way, and we have an enormous field to cultivate
00:12today. I will not be leaving the field until either 24 hours is up or I have cultivated the
00:20entire thing. My goal is to be out in the field by 8 a.m. We have just a little bit of time before
00:25then so I can get everything ready in the tractor and the cab for 24 whole hours. I've never done
00:31anything like this before, so I'm a little nervous. Step one is always checking the tractor's oil,
00:37especially before a long job like this. John Deere does still make metal dipsticks, and look at that.
00:49We're right on the level that we need to be. Even though the oil looks black, it's still okay.
00:55Next, we need to check in our cab and maybe add a few things to make it a little bit more
01:01comfortable. There's not much in here right now, really just an impact and a socket in case anything
01:09breaks. We need to add a few things. 24 hours is a long time to spend in such a fine space.
01:16Glad to have you to help keep me company. I'm bringing a water bottle with me. I'm bringing
01:21a blanket to put across my lap in case it gets chilly, a sweatshirt, and an eye mask just in case it gets
01:28laid out there. You don't plan on sleeping out there. This was 24 hours of working, not just
01:35living in the cab. I'm planning on at least taking a nap. I know you want to come to work, but
01:40I need you to hold down the fort here. Okay? I think Pepper wants to ride in the cab with me.
01:46Laura cannot leave our 660 acre field for an entire 24 hours. So that means if she needs any food,
01:55that's on me. If the tractor needs any fuel or repairs, that's on me. So I'll be the guy on the
02:02outside of the field while she is stuck inside the field in the tractor. She's going to be working hard
02:07all day and I have a few little surprises for her to keep her on her toes. The tractor is pretty clean
02:14right now, but let's see how it looks after 24 hours of working. Let's get out to the field, shall we?
02:37Maybe I've just been burned one too many times, but I'm always impressed when a tractor starts.
02:437.54 a.m., head not to the field. The tractor has 588.4, almost 5 hours on it. By the end of this
02:54challenge, the tractor will have over 600 hours on it. All right, enough dilly-dallying. Let's get out
03:02to the field. Grant said he had a couple surprises for me and I have to admit I'm a little scared
03:08about what they might be. Once Laura drives over this grassy strip, she has started her 24-hour
03:13challenge at 8 o'clock. She cannot leave the field for a whole 24 hours or until she gets a 660 acre
03:21field all done. If she leaves the field for any reason, she will fail the challenge. Entering the
03:26field right as it turned 8 o'clock on the dot. I will not be leaving the field until 8 a.m.
03:35tomorrow morning. This is going to be a long challenge.
03:40Here is a corn update. It is the end of June. This is how tall our corn is in this field.
03:48I'm a little bit nervous. I hope it's not too tall to cultivate.
03:52Have some tall corn.
03:56Can't even see the bar. Looks like we're going to be okay. For at least 24 hours.
04:11That's turned up the dirt nice.
04:14Nothing but green from every single direction. Just a sea of corn.
04:26Luckily, I've got the radio going and of course you to keep me company. To keep Laura on her toes,
04:38I'm going to plant this American flag out in the middle of the field somewhere.
04:43I got the flag placed way out here where she can find it easy. Sticks out pretty good.
04:48This is your seat right here. Pretty comfy buddy seat. But not nearly as comfy as what I have.
04:54I've got massaging, adjusting, heated and cooled seats. Yeah. Pretty cushy. But don't worry. This is nice too.
05:04This looks to be a spot where the planter didn't quite plant. Or something went wrong.
05:10I'm not really sure what.
05:12I did bring a little something from home that Grant doesn't know about.
05:35I brought a picture frame with a picture of us from a wedding we were both in last summer.
05:45Now it's almost like he's in here with me.
05:47Grant said he hid a flag somewhere out in the field to keep me on my toes.
05:53It was driving a tractor for 24 hours. I feel like I'm going to get pretty tired.
05:56So somewhere in the 660 acres, there is a hidden flag that we have to go find.
06:03So keep your eyes peeled for that while we're going.
06:05If you see something in the background, let me know.
06:08Two and a half hours in, going strong.
06:11I think it might be time for a new manicure.
06:13Maybe that'll be a good reward once I finish this whole field.
06:17660 acres is a lot.
06:18I was doing some poking around.
06:21Look what I found.
06:22Some gum, some hand wipes, and two spare forks.
06:27Those will probably come in handy later.
06:29I'm going to hang the eye mask up here for safekeeping.
06:32But to take a drink of water, I realized I unintentionally match my water bottle.
06:38We're like highlighters.
06:39You can't lose us out here in the field.
06:41100 acres in.
07:00I can't play you the song without getting copyrighted.
07:03This is what I'm listening to.
07:041142.
07:12I'm getting awfully close to lunchtime.
07:15I'm pretty hungry.
07:16Like I said, I did not bring any snacks out with me.
07:19So I am trusting Grant to make me something for lunch.
07:24Does Grant know how to cook?
07:26I think we're about to find out.
07:27We'll see what he brings me.
07:30Slowly but surely, gaining hours.
07:33Oh, Grant, it's lunchtime.
07:36I'm sitting here in the tractor cab.
07:38I have no snacks.
07:40I was wondering if lunch was going to be delivered anytime soon.
07:44I can probably do something.
07:45What do you want?
07:46Probably do something.
07:48I hope you can.
07:49I'm stuck out here.
07:52Okay.
07:54I'll bring you a surprise.
07:55Oh, no.
07:56I'll bring you a surprise.
07:57Okay.
07:59I'm counting on you.
08:00All right.
08:02Bye.
08:03Bye.
08:06Oh, great.
08:08He did not sound very confident at all.
08:11Here we go.
08:12Runs up.
08:13Laura loves this place.
08:15Loves her chicken strips.
08:16Thank you for choosing, Kristen.
08:21What can we make for you today?
08:23Hi.
08:23Could I have a number eight, please?
08:25A chicken strip meal?
08:27Perfect timing.
08:28I just got to the end of the field.
08:31Guess who I see?
08:32It's Grant.
08:33He's here with lunch.
08:34Oh, no way.
08:36Okay, guys.
08:37I doubt it, but things are actually looking up.
08:40If that is what I think it is, and I recognize the color of that cup, I think he brought me
08:47out Runs up.
08:51Grant, I had serious doubts, but you came through.
08:57I knew you were hungry.
08:59You've been doing a good job.
09:00Thanks.
09:01I'm doing my best.
09:02Here's what we have for lunch from Runs up.
09:05We've got a nice iced tea.
09:16Delicious.
09:18We got some chicken strips.
09:23Did Grant take one of these?
09:25There's supposed to be four in here, and there's only three.
09:27And some French fries.
09:32And, of course, some barbecue sauce to dip.
09:41Want to know what one of the best feelings in farming is?
09:44When you look down the row and just see clean soil.
09:48No weeds.
09:49Just straight lines of healthy crops.
09:52Weeds just aren't in our fields anymore.
09:54They're online, too.
09:55I recently found out that my personal information, phone number, address, birth date,
10:01was being bought and sold online by data brokers.
10:05Even things like family details were being leaked on hundreds of websites.
10:09Luckily, while I'm out here taking care of weeds in the fields,
10:12Delete Me is taking care of all of that online.
10:15It's a subscription that finds and removes my personal information from data broker websites
10:20all year long.
10:22No tractor necessary.
10:23I got my first privacy report in just seven days.
10:26All the places Delete Me found my information and removed it.
10:30Just like keeping your rows clean gives your corn a better chance to grow,
10:33keeping your online presence weed-free protects your privacy.
10:38Go to joindeliteme.com slash laura20 or use code laura20 at checkout to receive 20% off consumer plans.
10:45Thank you so much to Delete Me for sponsoring today's video and helping me keep my field
10:50and my digital footprint clean.
10:53When in doubt, I know that I always have my dad to talk to.
10:57We spent hours and hours on the phone in the tractor cab.
11:02So I figured I'd give him a little call and tell him what I'm up to today.
11:07Shall we?
11:08See if he answers.
11:09Hello?
11:10Hey, dad.
11:11How's it going?
11:12Good.
11:13I finished spraying and it's misting.
11:15It's misting on you?
11:17Yeah.
11:18Oh, no.
11:18That means rain's headed my way too, right?
11:21Yeah.
11:21You had...
11:22Are you running your windshield wipers?
11:24I'm not running my windshield wipers, but I am sitting in the tractor.
11:28I'm doing 24 hours in a tractor cab challenge.
11:32Are you saying I picked the wrong day to try and finish this field?
11:37Is it...
11:38So you are actually working.
11:39You're not just camping out in the tractor?
11:41No, I am.
11:42I am working.
11:42I'm cultivating right now.
11:44And just barely.
11:45The corn is almost too tall.
11:48Oh, my goodness.
11:49There...
11:49It happened.
11:50It happened so fast, dad.
11:53Talking with my dad is always so nice.
11:55He offers such a fresh perspective and encouragement.
11:58We spend a lot of time on the phone together.
12:01And even though we don't farm together anymore, it's so nice to be able to compare operations,
12:06ask him for advice, and swap stories.
12:09And there's always lots of laughs.
12:11And now, back to just me and you in the field.
12:16Thanks for chatting, dad.
12:17Well, what do you know?
12:43Look what I see.
12:45That is a flag right there.
12:56This will be a good excuse to step outside and stretch my legs.
12:59I'm king of the hill!
13:09I can't really got this thing in the ground.
13:16Oh, my goodness.
13:17Do you think I get to turn this in for a prize?
13:26That's pretty picturesque, if I do say so myself.
13:32Well, that works.
13:33I don't know.
13:48There you go.
13:49How old did you see?
13:50I don't have to wait for it.
13:51I don't know, but I have to sit here.
13:55Maybe you love it.
13:56You're a tie-in for a prize here, right?
13:58You're a tie-in for a prize there.
13:58You're a tie-in.
13:58You're the one who is talking Bit.
14:00You're a team like you and me.
14:01We do something like you.
14:02Going along, we're about eight hours in, and something does not sound right.
14:12I'm afraid we've got a bearing going out.
14:14I'm almost to the end of this pass, but I'm going to get out and check it out.
14:19If we do have a bearing out, Grant is going to have to come and fix it because I cannot
14:24leave the field.
14:26Yep, that's not looking so good.
14:30We've got a bearing out.
14:33Bad news, Grant.
14:34Uh-oh.
14:35We've got something broken.
14:37I guess one of the bolts on the back.
14:42No, that was broken last time we were cultivating.
14:45Oh.
14:46This time, our luck has run out.
14:48We've got a bearing out.
14:49Oh, shoot.
14:50You know what one bearing means?
14:52No.
14:53There's usually two bearings that are out.
14:54No!
14:55Don't say things like that.
14:56I've got just the tools.
14:58We've got a field to finish.
15:00A hammer.
15:01Which one is it?
15:02And a wrench.
15:03Which tool?
15:04Oh!
15:05I thought you were asking me which tool was the tool.
15:07No, I...
15:08It's this one right here.
15:09That one?
15:10Yep.
15:11You just take that bolt out right there?
15:20It's actually super easy.
15:21Do you think you have all the parts back at the shop to fix this?
15:25I might have to run into town.
15:28But...
15:29You've probably been out here what?
15:30Eight and a half hours?
15:32Eight and a half hours?
15:33You're probably about to do it for a good snack.
15:35So...
15:36I'll get the bearings.
15:37I'll do this as quick as possible.
15:39And...
15:40Maybe you can clean the cab out while you're waiting for me.
15:42Because you can't leave the field.
15:44That's not a bad idea.
15:50Boy, I'm glad you're here.
15:52I wouldn't want to be doing this by myself.
15:54That thing's sharp.
15:55Yep.
15:56I can cut a toe off.
15:57Okay.
15:58All right.
15:59All right.
16:00I'll, uh...
16:01Meet you back here.
16:02All right.
16:03My hero.
16:08Grant brought me all the supplies that I need to clean things up while he goes and fixes
16:13the bearings.
16:14See ya!
16:15Things have gotten a little bit messy in here, if I do say so myself.
16:20Let's get this place back in working order.
16:23I thought I was a pretty clean person, but I guess when you live somewhere, it just gets
16:41kind of dirty.
16:42Now that my traffic cab is all clean, while I'm waiting for Grant to go get back, I think
16:48I might just take a little nap.
16:50You guys think Grant is almost back yet?
17:17That actually was not bad.
17:24I would do that again.
17:30Now that my cab is all clean, and I've had my power nap, the only thing that's left to
17:36do is wait for Grant to get back so that I can exchange my flag, get my bearing, and get
17:41back to work.
17:42Came to John Deere to get the parts.
17:45Look at all these tractors.
17:47A tractor that size would be pretty handy.
17:50Now it's time to go get Laura's snack.
17:52What do you guys think I should get her?
17:54I've got something in mind.
17:55Back at the shop now.
17:57I've got to get that bearing race out.
18:00Luckily, it's already gone on this side.
18:04What?
18:05I've got my trusty baby hammer.
18:06This thing's the best.
18:07It broke, came out in two pieces.
18:11All right.
18:12That is fixed.
18:13New bearing, inside.
18:14All right.
18:15All right.
18:16That is fixed.
18:17New bearing, inside.
18:18All right.
18:19She's all fixed up.
18:20How did it go?
18:21Good.
18:22Not too terrible?
18:23No, it wasn't bad at all.
18:24Had all the right tools in a nice, organized toolbox, and she's ready to go.
18:42Perfect.
18:43Let's get this back on.
18:44See ya?
18:45Hold on.
18:46Okay, good.
18:47Right.
18:48How did it go?
18:49How did it go?
18:52Perfect.
18:53Let's get this back on and get back to work.
18:55I brought you something.
18:56You did?
18:57I brought you a little snack.
18:58Oh, I'm excited.
19:01Grant brings the best surprises.
19:03Now, how are you going to put this thing back on without getting cut, chopped up?
19:08Do you need my help?
19:11It kind of holds itself there.
19:15Okay.
19:16Seriously, these things are pretty sharp for cutting out weeds.
19:29Make sure that's on nice and tight before we get back out in the field.
19:33I want to thank whoever engineered this awesome Orthman product.
19:38Look at this bolt.
19:39They, uh, so you don't have to hold a wrench on the other side.
19:43Oh, wow.
19:44That's nice.
19:45So, only one wrench needed.
19:47Yeah.
19:48That's pretty handy for infield fixes.
19:49Super easy.
19:50Torque to spec.
19:51Oh, look at that.
19:54Whoa.
19:55Much better.
19:56Excellent.
19:57All right, I'm ready for my surprise.
19:59Okay.
20:00I'll trade you.
20:01You found it, didn't you?
20:02A flag.
20:03Yep.
20:04I found it.
20:05Oh, no way.
20:06Look at that.
20:07That is my favorite candy bar.
20:10Mark chocolate.
20:11Milky Way of Midnight.
20:12These are so good.
20:13Thanks to the game.
20:14I like that.
20:15That was fun.
20:16Keep you on your toes.
20:17That kept me alert.
20:18Wide awake.
20:19Back to it.
20:20I finally get to enjoy my snack.
20:23Ugh.
20:24Are candy bars considered snacks?
20:26Or are they just candy?
20:28If you've never had a Milky Way Midnight, you are missing out.
20:35Mmm.
20:36It's chocolate and caramel and marshmallow.
20:41So yummy.
20:45I'm gonna eat this candy bar.
20:50You guys keep an eye out behind me, okay?
20:53Make sure we're not running over any corn.
20:55You know, I feel pretty lucky to be married to Grant.
20:56And what's even better is that not only am I married to him, but I get to farm with him.
21:00Every single day.
21:01Now, while working with your spouse is definitely not for everyone, it is definitely not for everyone, it is definitely not for everyone.
21:07It is definitely for us.
21:12you know i feel pretty lucky to be married to grant and what's even better is that not only
21:22am i married to him but i get to farm with him every single day now while working with your
21:28spouse is definitely not for everyone it is definitely for us all that extra time together
21:33is just so special to me and he does so much stuff behind the scenes off camera that no one
21:40ever gets to see that just is so hopeful he's truly the best husband and sorry for being sappy but
21:47i just really love the guy and it's nice to have the picture to look at
21:51grant's the best corn corn corn forever and then occasionally it's broken up by a well motor
22:03that right there powers those pivots in the distance speaking of the distance and the horizon
22:12sure isn't very sunny today is it it almost looks like it could rain but i don't know flies have not
22:21been biting in the past couple of days and if you believe old farmer's wives tales the way you know
22:27it's going to rain is if flies bite you or if you see reptiles out on the country roads like turtles
22:35or snakes those are sure signs it's going to rain i haven't experienced neither of those things so
22:40a bit skeptical about this weather report
23:10just a quick update while we're just sitting out here we've got nothing but time you guys helped
23:24me fundraise for team junior achievement which is the charity that i am running the 2025 new york city
23:30marathon with thank you so much everyone who donated it's going to an amazing cause and i could not be
23:36more excited for november which is when the race takes place and i just wanted to let you all know
23:42that i have been training and i am getting so excited so i will keep you posted i know that
23:49i usually just share the stuff that i do in the tractor cab on the farm but running is something that
23:55i love to do when i'm not spending 24 hours inside of a tractor cab it keeps me calm and focused it's a
24:02great place to think about big decisions my training has been going well so i still have till november
24:09but we're getting to work i guess this 24 hours is like a day off for my training so that's kind of
24:15nice if anyone has any tips for marathon training if you've ever run a half or a full before i would
24:22love to hear them or if anyone lives in new york city or is planning on attending the race i would
24:29love to see you there doing this challenge is more than just finishing this field or trying to do
24:36something for 24 hours straight it's some purposeful time set aside to remind myself what we're really
24:42doing out here right because farming is just so much more than a job it is a legacy that has been passed
24:49down from generations for me and it is something that i take really seriously and so just this time
24:57out in the tractor cab all by myself with truly nowhere else to go but just focusing on the job
25:03at hand just feels like such a great moment to recenter we're halfway through the year it's the
25:08end of june i just really want to remember why i'm out here doing this and what my overarching goals
25:15for the year are i'm trying to grow the best crop possible but in doing that i'm dealing with so many
25:22unknowns so many variables so many factors i have no control over the weather the markets how my timing
25:30for everything works out but you know what we're out here just trying to do the very best that we can
25:36trying to make our families proud and then sunday the generations that come after us i want to leave
25:43them a heritage that they can look back on and be really really proud of
25:51being a farmer is a very special job and i do not take one minute of it for granted
26:01200 acres in if anyone plays farming simulator
26:07i'm curious if the game looks like this like does it look like real life i have definitely considered
26:15playing because you know us farmers we just can't get enough of farming even when we do this for
26:21literally 24 hours straight it's not enough we're always looking for more so i don't know if i started
26:28playing farming simulator do you think any of you guys would be willing to help me or if i like uh if i
26:34live streamed it would anyone be interested in watching that got lots of time to think out here so
26:41i'm just throwing some ideas out there drop in the comments your thoughts what do you guys think
26:49can you believe that just last week our tractor was doing wheelies
26:55with the added weight in the front it handles so much better now
26:59basically got harley pegs got a nice little foot rest there so the thing with being in the tractor
27:10car for 24 hours is that you do not exactly have access to the bathroom and i cannot leave the field
27:17but i can be in the field so i'm gonna go in the field
27:23i told you i'd rain the sun's coming out see those old wives tales holding true faithful pivots
27:32usually broken when you need them the most but we do have access to water for our fields and for
27:39that i am very grateful they just look kind of funny as the corn starts to come up
27:47300 acres in
27:51i know there is a lot of really unfortunate things happening in our world right now
27:59as ever and i just want to make sure that you know that this is a safe space for you to come and
28:07relax not worrying about what else is happening in your life or the world just a nice quiet spot of
28:15relaxation you can just watch the corn sit with me enjoy the wide open spaces of nebraska i am really
28:27glad that you're here with me uh i don't know what these rain droplets are but not much we're gonna keep
28:35going it's almost dinner time i'm hungry
28:48we're still going out here what do you guys think grant is going to bring me for dinner
28:54hopefully something good well since i got lower fast food for lunch figured i uh step it up a notch and
29:00i cooked a steak on the grill for her hope she likes it i feel relieved we have come to the end of the
29:08field and what do you know look who's here just in the nick of time now what do we think grant has
29:19brought me for dinner the runs out for lunch that was a top tier move very impressed with that
29:25what could be for dinner come on in what do you what do you have for me oh i grilled you a steak no way
29:41yeah oh my goodness
29:48that looks amazing i was not expecting that come on and eat with me
29:57i told you guys grant was the best i shouldn't have doubted i'm sorry you doubt me the grill master
30:03your tractor is very dirty grant it has been a very long day how are you holding how are you holding
30:15up oh i feel like i'm going a little bit crazy um i've stretched my legs a little bit but
30:23the seat's comfy but i don't know it's you'll make it all the way through the night
30:28well you're not almost done you're i'm not almost done you're almost halfway through the field
30:40hear that guys almost halfway but uh the sky is getting darker so well i'm just gonna keep going as
30:51long as long as i can but let's eat some dinner a real plate and everything still yeah i try to use
30:59steak on a paper plate i also made one for myself so i think i'll have some too dinner has been had
31:11and now guess what we keep going
31:14i can't be yawning yet it's not dark outside things have taken a turn very quickly as you can
31:27see from my wet hair upon exiting the cab uh it has started raining i thought that my old wives tales
31:37predictions were correct and that it would not rain and that it would fold off for 24 hours
31:45and it has not guys i i have to quit the challenge look at what i'm working with here mud has started
31:56to form around my tires i i think it's going to start knocking over corn
32:08oh man it is raining cats and dogs out there
32:11i don't think lori's gonna make it a full 24 hours yeah i can't even hardly walk in the mud
32:17and let alone drive in it and yeah she's she's gonna be done let's go check her out
32:25look at that she had to back out one pass too many
32:30it's been kind of misting all day but finally got caught in the rain
32:39well we didn't quite make it 24 hours better luck next time i do not want to have to do this because
32:47i really wanted to be able to finish i honestly just wanted to be able to see if i could last 24
32:52hours in a tractor cab but did you see that lightning this is not letting up
32:59i'm just gonna have to call it look at the puddle it's already developed at the edge of the field
33:11we're folding it up
33:24my goodness
33:27caller quits it's wet out here
33:30i do not want to do any damage to the corn but i also just do not want to create super big ruts in
33:42the field this is not gonna be letting up anytime soon and i do not want my field to be an absolute
33:48muddy mess i guess on the bright side the tractor's getting washed
33:52laura is officially leaving the circle therefore ending our 24-hour challenge wow that was some good
34:03thunder she's done let's go home i have officially exited the field
34:17we're just gonna have to try again next time
34:22let's get back to the shop and do a final tally
34:52all in all we got half of it done
35:10not a great day but definitely a good day instead of 24 hours it's 8 pm right now meaning we got about
35:1812 hours in the tractor if you exclude the quick nap i took while grant was fixing the bearing on the
35:24cultivator that is not a record day by any means in fact that's a pretty average tractor day i usually
35:31try to push it more to like 14 or 16 hours but you know what i'm not going to complain we got a good
35:37amount done and now we can enjoy the rain leaving the tractor parked outside so that this nice rain
35:45can rinse it all off i would be lying to you guys if i said i wasn't just at least a little bit
35:53disappointed honestly i really wanted to see if i could do it but our corn really needs water and if
36:01water is coming from the sky means that we do not have to turn on pivots which costs money every single
36:07time we turn them on so in reality this is a money saving rain which is really really nice but it means
36:14that i did not complete the challenge that's some pretty intense thunder i did get to have some very
36:24nice meals in the cab and spend some time with you which i really appreciate so thank you for watching
36:30today's video let me know if we need to try this again the next time in the tractor tab once again i
36:36just want to say thank you to delete me for sponsoring today's video be sure to check out the link in the
36:40description to learn more thank you for watching today's video and we'll see you in the next one bye
