My New Tractor Is NOT Supposed To Do THAT
Transcript
00:00Our tractor is not supposed to do that. Good morning everybody. Today we get to
00:06get out in the field and do a job with my brand new surprise tractor. Not the
00:11old tractor. We still love these guys but they're parked for a little bit
00:15because we need to bring the big dogs out. Weeds are starting to grow and we
00:21can't have them taken over our corn plants and so we need to hook this
00:24tractor up so we can cultivate all the weeds out of our field. I was going to
00:28get into a tractor but I see this little writing here. Can you see that? It says
00:34loose bolts. What's that from Grant? I wrote that because I noticed that I put the
00:40hitch in but I forgot to tighten the bolts and everything is loose back there. Oh my.
00:47And I don't want to lose that while we're in the field so we got to remember to
00:50tighten it. All right so before we get down the road we need to tighten that and
00:55then of course even though this is basically a brand new tractor, always have to check the oil.
01:07It's a good thing I'm skinny and I can fit back here.
01:09Barely. It's going to drip. It's going to drip. What do you guys think? Looks pretty good, right?
01:20I think that looks pretty good.
01:25Pepper! Where are you at, little cat?
01:30Gotta always watch out because she likes to hang out around us and I want to make sure she doesn't get
01:35caught under any tractor tires. Pepper! Where is she?
01:47I'm really surprised she's not sitting on the seat. Oh, here we go.
01:50Don't ask what's on this trailer. Kat is giving it a little inspection because she's the manager of the shop.
02:06Once again, Grant has come home with something. I don't even know what that thing is but we've stopped
02:15asking questions. Our job is to focus on the tractors. Ain't that right, Peps?
02:19Now that thing on the trailer was a deal I stumbled into by a neighbor, friend of a friend.
02:45Too good of a deal to pass up. But I think it needs more.
02:49That is just one of the reasons why getting this almost brand new tractor was such a big deal.
03:03Because it seems like Grant really only buys things that need work.
03:12Anyone, can anyone explain that to me? The guy loves a project. What can I say?
03:19All better. Now we've got such a nice shop. It would be a shame if we bought two nights of stuff
03:26that we wouldn't even work on anything, right? I guess that's probably why we have this nice big
03:30arrangement of bolts and nuts from boltsandnuts.com because we are always needing to work on something.
03:36Always. Not very often do I get to drive Grant around. Usually he makes me sit in the buddy seat.
03:43I'm taking the reins for today. Or should I say, the steering wheel.
03:46Starts up every time. But I guess if you pay over $350,000 for something, it probably should.
03:58It's pretty handy. It's been five years since we've moved into the shop and I finally got clickers
04:12for all the trucks and tractors, skid steer, the forklift. Everyone has a clicker so I don't have to
04:18get out and put the button on it. Yeah. Five years I put that off. That's pretty handy.
04:30We have made it to the farm where the other cultivator is and my dad is already out cultivating.
04:36This is our end goal to be driving through the corn, not running any over and scraping out all the weeds.
04:42Nice and slowly. This is a delicate job because there's actually a pretty narrow time frame in which
04:53you can do this job. The corn needs to be tall enough so that it's strong enough that it can withstand
04:59some dirt being thrown against it, not falling over. But it needs to be short enough that the bar
05:06doesn't run over any of the corn and snap it off. It always seems like the corn is too small,
05:11too small, too small, too small and then you blink. There's one 90 degree day and it's way too tall.
05:18Corn puts on a new leaf every three days. This is what we came in here to get.
05:25Orthman 8450 cultivator. When was the last time you saw a wooden ladder like this?
05:32Or a container like this? There's all sorts of goodies in here, but mostly a lot of spare well motors.
05:43Irrigation is one of the most important parts of our farm. We are putting a crop to market and when
05:50you're selling a crop in market, you need to have a differentiator between your competitors.
05:55And ours is the fact that we have the ability to water our crops. And especially in super dry years,
06:01hot summers, if one of our motors goes down, they run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So we've got
06:07plenty of backups in case one goes down. We need to get this seed tender moved out of the way. We need
06:12all the room we can get to get the cultivator out. Wind is very inconvenient, but there's something very
06:28beautiful about watching it move grass. And that's just lovely. What a good looking tractor.
06:42Do you see these marks right here? This is a very handy situation in which tractors are equipped with
07:02a split braking system, meaning that you can just brake the right side or just brake the left side
07:09of the tractor. In order to make a super tight turn, Grant presses in the right side brake so the back
07:16tires skid and the rest of the tires move the tractor back into position.
07:39This time Grant's doing the opposite when he pulls out, pressing down on just the right brake so the left
07:46side skids. There's just enough room in this building for Grant to pull out the 16 row implement straight
07:58ahead without hitting anything.
08:12And back goes the seed tender.
08:20The front duels are off. The cultivator is hooked up and on and we are finally ready to get out in the
08:27field. I'll be honest, the tractor looks a little silly though. So used to seeing it with such a big
08:33wide front. And when it's all skinny like that, it just looks, well, the tractor's lost a couple pounds
08:41to say the least. Let's get out in the field and see how it works. Pepper, are you ready?
08:46You have to stay here and guard the premises. We'll go out to the field. Here, you take a nap.
08:58Go on, go to sleep. I can't believe this battery is still here.
09:03It's 7 30 in the morning, but you know what sounds good, Grant? Some chips and salsa.
09:15Doesn't that sound good? Chips and salsa. Maybe you should take me out to eat after we finish
09:23today's job. Did you shut the door on me? Unbelievable.
09:38I seem to be struggling a little bit. I can't turn. I'm turning, but it just won't go.
09:45I think we might be a little light up front and a little heavy in the back.
10:04Guess we're just going to have to use the split steering brakes here to get us out to the field.
10:08There we go. I knew there was a point for these things. I feel a bit wobbly here.
10:23I don't think split braking is super ideal going down the road,
10:28especially when you have steep ditches on either side. Not the best.
10:38Our tractor is not supposed to do that. Turning into the field, we got those front tires up in the air.
10:48Oh my goodness. So we have some extra room up front here. I think we need to put some weights. Wow.
11:01We need to go down every single one of these rows here.
11:20We are getting rid of weeds, but we're also getting rid of volunteer corn clumps like that.
11:26That's leftover from last year and that's going to take valuable water and nutrients from our
11:31plants. The only thing we want left behind is clean straight rows of corn that we planted. The stuff
11:39that is supposed to be there. That is the definition of a weed. Anything that is planted where it is not
11:47supposed to be. When the tractor is in the field actually cultivating and the bar is down, it actually
11:55handles pretty well. There's a surprising amount of weight on the front. It's the turning around and
12:00going down the road that I'm concerned about. Despite all of the screens, this is a surprisingly low tech
12:07job for us. Most of this stuff is left over from planting. All we're really looking at is our auto
12:13steer on this monitor right here. Then all of our tractors functions, the oil pressure, temperature, fuel,
12:21all sorts of those good things. But all of this is run with one hydraulic remote. We are just lifting
12:27this hunk of iron up and down and dragging it through the field.
12:57And here is the aftermath. Isn't that beautiful? Oh, I wish you guys were here to smell this. The dirt,
13:21it's so fresh. Oh my goodness. Look at all those wormies. We go fishing.
13:30Oh, this is just one of the best jobs. The sun is shining, the corn is growing, our soil is moist,
13:38and we are getting rid of weeds one pass at a time. Because of the turning and the wheelieing,
13:47I think we're going to need some weights. Because this is not just inconvenient,
13:52I think it's flat out dangerous. So luckily, we got some weights just in time. Now the real question
13:57is going to be, can we lift them? I think so. They got handles on them. They're meant to be lifted.
14:04We'll see about that. So as you can see, there is space for more weights here. Whoever ordered
14:10this tractor brand new didn't order full front weights, which is okay. But in our case, we need
14:16them. So we bought them at John Deere. Great. Wow. This is going to be a lot of weights to lift up.
14:29Yeah, it's really weighting down the back of the pickup.
14:37They're a little worn out. I think I broke it.
14:40There you go. Hit the side way. There we go.
14:43Okay, so how much does each one of these weigh? 43 kilograms.
14:57All right, all our foreign watchers. Leave a comment how many pounds that is.
15:03What is 43 kilograms? Well, pick it up so you can guess.
15:08All I know is that if I drop this on my toe, it's going to be a bad thing.
15:12Okay. Man, look at that muscle. Do that again. Yeah? Ready? Wow.
15:25Does it look like I've been lifting? Yeah. All right, I think the two of us can definitely manage
15:31these, but uh, not by myself.
15:47pink gloves for extra grit.
16:00All right. Watch your fingers.
16:02Can I push that in?
16:04Ready? Yeah.
16:07Okay. One down.
16:11How many left? Eight? Six. Five. Five left.
16:15That's a lot of weights.
16:33Now that we've added more weights on either side, we are adding these long rods
16:40that bolt in and secure them all in place.
16:45Now that we've added more weights on the other side, we've added more weights on the other side.
17:05Installed!
17:07Over here, I found a hole in the road.
17:10Look at that thing.
17:11More it could probably fit down in there.
17:16Maybe it's not safe to be driving over.
17:20Oh my goodness.
17:25That's right in the middle of our road.
17:28Oh man.
17:30Well, I was just going to move this to get out so I could, yeah, just move it out of the way.
17:34Because I can't quite squeeze through them with the, uh, pillar button.
17:41It's a little bit windy out there.
17:57Thanks, Laura.
17:57It is so peaceful out here.
18:07We've got a beautiful 360 degree view.
18:11The sky is so blue. There's barely even any clouds.
18:15Oh man, we've got quite the hill we're going to be going up here.
18:18This is interesting.
18:21I do not want to knock over any corn plants.
18:24So, like, lift up just a fuzz here.
18:30That is where those front weights come in handy.
18:33There we go.
18:34But it's just really nice and quiet in the tractor cab.
18:41Especially if your phone's not ringing.
18:43Nobody's bothering you.
18:45Just out here alone, enjoying nature.
18:48And the smell.
18:49Like I said earlier, you can even smell it inside the cab.
18:53The smell of freshly turned earth.
18:55That soil.
18:56It's so rich.
18:59This is definitely, I probably say this about most tractor jobs.
19:03This is definitely one of the better tractor jobs.
19:06So, I'm very grateful to have you guys riding along in the buddy sea with me.
19:18Well, you can't be a tractor all day doing a job like this with at least something breaking.
19:23But good news, it's an easy fix.
19:26Just this bolt right here.
19:27And if anything's going to break, that's what I want, okay?
19:32Because I happen to have a whole stock of things just like this back at the farm.
19:37Let's run back there, grab a bolt, get this fixed.
19:40Luckily, we have basically an entire store right in our shop thanks to boltsandnuts.com.
19:47So, all I need to do is scan right around here.
19:53I'm going to need a carriage bolt from right over here.
19:58And then I'll get the nut from right over here.
20:01Everything is clearly labeled.
20:03And when I eventually run out, I just scan this QR code and it will reorder me that exact thing that I need.
20:10So handy.
20:11This is a fully threaded bolt here.
20:13It's a shear bolt.
20:14So, if we hit anything hard, like maybe a buried rock or something out in the field,
20:18this will just bloop and not wreck anything else.
20:21But now, we just need to get this back in place properly.
20:24Luckily, I've got a hammer here.
20:27Oh, man.
20:30Oh.
20:32Might need something with a little more leverage on it.
20:37There you go.
20:39Oh, you got a bug in your hair.
20:40I do?
20:41A little ladybug.
20:42Oh, that's cute.
20:44Keep going.
20:45Okay.
20:47Give it some force on that.
20:48Do I need more?
20:52This is a two-handed job.
20:54No time for the camera.
20:55Sorry, guys.
20:56I'm going to put you down.
20:57Nice and straight like here.
21:04It's wedged in there pretty good.
21:05Get your toes around here.
21:12Careful, Grant.
21:13Careful.
21:18Darn it.
21:21All right.
21:23Just tell me when to stop.
21:26Okay.
21:31Oh, boy.
21:35You want me to hit it?
21:58Yeah, loosen up a little more.
22:05Okay.
22:06Okay.
22:08Some more.
22:12Oh, that's all the way on that one.
22:23Yeah, it's all loose.
22:24It's just wedged in here at the top.
22:26Is that how you're supposed to do it?
22:28I hope none of the neighbors see this.
22:32I think it's good now.
22:33Now we just got to put the new bolt in.
22:36Pretty easy.
22:37That's perfect.
22:40Oh, perfect fit.
22:44Could have gone a little bit shorter, but
22:48I hope my socket reaches all the way in here.
22:50Oh, you got a deep wall.
22:51You'll be good.
22:53All right.
22:54Let's tighten these up.
23:03All right.
23:20All right.
23:24All right.
23:28All right.
23:30All right.
23:32All right.

23:54All right.
23:55All right.
23:56All right.
23:57All right.
24:58If you need to find me for the foreseeable future, it'll be right here.
25:13But I have no complaints.
25:15This is a pretty cushy office.
25:18The AC is blasting.
25:19It's about 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside.
25:23The tractor is working great.
25:25The crops are looking good.
25:26I think we're pretty happy.
25:28Thank you so much for spending the past couple days with us as we get ready to do this tractor
25:33job and then sit in here and enjoy some hard work.
25:38We're always grateful to have you guys along for the ride and we will see you in the next one.
25:44Bye.
