The Worst Farming Mistake Cost Me SO Much Money
Transcript
00:00This is the worst planting mistake I've ever made. It just cost us so much money.
00:09Say good morning. Are you ready for a day of planting?
00:21The day started out just like every other planting day.
00:24By filling up the tractor with fuel, checking everything over, and getting ready to go.
00:32Little did I know what the next 48 hours would hold.
00:54That's it.
01:03We'll see you next time.
01:05Okay.
01:08Bye.
01:09Bye.
01:11Bye.
01:11Bye.
01:19Bye.
01:20Bye.
01:20Bye.
01:21Bye.
01:23Bye.
01:24106 gallons of fuel, wow.
01:54106 gallons of fuel, wow.
02:24106 gallons of fuel, wow.
02:55I planted 80 acres of corn with my air compressor hose having a leak in it, meaning that those
03:0580 acres got planted this far beneath the surface when they needed to be planted two,
03:12two and a half inches deep.
03:15And so now instead of planting today, I'm spending my day in the cultivator or the hiller and
03:23I'm using this to throw dirt on top of the seeds.
03:27It's supposed to rain tonight.
03:29If it doesn't, I'm going to need to start irrigating so that I can pack this dirt on top of the
03:35seed.
03:36This is not the worst mistake I've ever made farming, but this is definitely in the top
03:43three.
03:45Not how I want to be spending my day.
03:47I am wasting time and money.
03:51I am just hoping and praying that this works out and the seeds germinate and actually sprout
04:02a root that's going to be able to hold it throughout the season.
04:06It's May.
04:18The days are steadily getting longer and hotter and the work not slowing down one bit.
04:24And when you're sweating by 10 a.m., you really feel it.
04:28The sluggishness, the tiredness, the cramps all kicking in at once.
04:32That is why I always keep Element close by.
04:35You all know Element is my go-to electrolyte drink mix.
04:39No sugar, no artificial drunk, just the good stuff I need to keep me going.
04:44Right now they have a limited time offer lemonade flavor, which is my new favorite.
04:49It is so refreshing and delicious.
04:52It's perfect for summer.
04:53You can get a free sample pack with any purchase and try every single flavor Element has to
04:58offer at drinkelement.com slash laurafarms.
05:04That's drinkelement.com slash laurafarms.
05:09We love it here on the farm and I know you will too.
05:12Element has been supporting the channel for over a year now, so it means the world when
05:16you guys show love to the companies who are helping keep my farm up and running.
05:20All right.
05:21Cheers.
05:22Drink break is over.
05:23It's time to get back to work.
05:27That is a seed on top of the ground.
05:32That is just so bad.
05:36I'm just going to scrape.
05:37Oh, you see that?
05:39There's another one.
05:42There's one.
05:43It's just really, really bad.
05:52Just about worst possible scenario, actually.
05:58There's one.
06:00This is what it looks like after the hilling, so you can see a lot more dirt here to push
06:09aside.
06:10There's some gravel and rocks over in this chunk of the field.
06:18Let's go down.
06:19Try and find that planting trench.
06:23It's a rock.
06:25There's another one.
06:26Oh, there's one.
06:26There's one.
06:27Oh, there's one.
06:39Do you see how it's now actually under some dirt?
06:44like it's supposed to be yeah where does all this gravel come from I actually
06:53know that's field this field used to be the site of an old concrete plant
07:00oh these rocks are out here come on little speed where are you plan is to get some water on this
07:17there we go there's another one some water on this so all this soil that's on top gets packed down
07:30oh
08:00So
08:30We are planting corn, trying to stay ahead of a giant thunderstorm.
08:37Can we beat it?
08:39Don't mind that.
08:42Should clear up.
08:44Should clear up.
08:45Come on.
08:47There we go.
08:49Painting little green lines.
08:51Painting blue lines.
08:53Five miles an hour.
08:55Rolling through the field.
08:56Trying to stay ahead of those storm clouds right there.
09:01And it's not looking pretty.
09:03It's already sprinkled on us, as you can see from the collection of dust.
09:09But nevertheless, we are still rolling.
09:13I'm keeping an eye on my down pressure right here with that gauge.
09:18My fertilizer system here.
09:21My seed population, singulation, and placement here.
09:25Here's my auto steer, as well as my fertilizer application.
09:31A lot to keep track of in here.
09:34Planting, not my favorite time of year.
09:36It's incredibly stressful and not very visual.
09:39I have all of these monitors, but I have to trust that they're telling me the truth.
09:43If I get out about every 45 minutes to check behind the planter and make sure that my monitors are telling me the truth and that we're actually planting, man, do I need a shower.
09:55Planting does not take very long.
09:58Planting, it's just very nerve-wracking.
10:01You're sitting in the cab, in the quiet, listening to the vacuums and the fans and your whole hydraulic system.
10:10Just kind of a ball of nerves.
10:13I don't like it.
10:14I'm ready for summertime and I'm ready for harvest.
10:16But it's very important to not wish seasons away.
10:19This is where we're at right now, so we just need to be here and enjoy it.
10:24And you guys are riding in the passenger seat with me.
10:27I am enjoying a watermelon sparkling water.
10:30I have some yogurt, some water, and some knock-off Gatorade for later.
10:37In addition to trying to outrun a storm, I'm also trying to, well, and succeeding in outrunning myself.
10:45I am almost out of fertilizer in these big yellow tanks on either side of me and almost out of seed in the big yellow tank behind me.
10:54I found some treasure in the field.
10:56An ice cream bucket.
10:58Pretty good condition, too.
10:59I'm just keeping an eye on those row cleaners there.
11:02And I have to lift out of my seat ever so slightly.
11:05But then it starts beeping at me, telling me to sit back down.
11:09Just got to keep a watchful eye on those, make sure nothing bunches up.
11:13This planting season, we have had the pleasure of using a very, very nice seed tender from Unverf Earth.
11:20Everything is controlled by remote.
11:22There's an automatic talc dispenser.
11:24It is very movable, can fit a ton of seed in it.
11:30Very, very handy.
11:31But for today, we are down to bags that we're going to have to throw by hand.
11:36Just like the olden days.
11:39Seed tender's been so nice to use.
11:42But we are out of bulk seed.
11:44It's time to use these mussels and earn them.
11:47While I'm not ready for this rain to come yet, as soon as we are done planting, I would just love if it would rain.
11:55Because we've had to start irrigating.
11:59That's very expensive.
12:01But in order to get these seeds that are putting in the ground the moisture that we need, if it doesn't rain, a very necessary step.
12:09Speaking of pivots, I had some service guys out.
12:13Hopefully they were able to help me get this pivot moving out of my way so I can plant under it.
12:18Those clouds are so ominous looking.
12:21They're kind of pretty though.
12:23It's just you, me, the tractor in the sky for miles and miles and miles.
12:33That's why having a tractor cab with a modern convenience like a refrigerator seems like luxury, which it is.
12:40But it's so nice for packing lunches.
12:42We're just out here by ourselves.
12:46If we want to go to the bathroom, can't exactly just drive home to a toilet.
12:50You just walk out the door and use the facilities.
12:56Planting affects us for the whole rest of the year and often the following years after that.
13:02And so it is absolutely so important that we get this job done right.
13:09No pressure, right?
13:11That is a big weight to carry around with you all day.
13:14And look at this.
13:17You see that?
13:18Sprinkles on the windshield.
13:22Not enough to quit yet, but that means rain is on its way.
13:27Officially out of starter.
13:29It's time to fill up.
13:30Luckily, just in time, Grant just pulled up the field with a fresh trailer.
13:33Thanks for coming to my rescue.
13:47Yep.
13:48Just in time to get me all filled up.
13:59The clouds are still there, but the sun has peaked out.
14:04Since I'm out of the cab, now is my chance to go row by row and make sure that all of my settings are still the same.
14:14It does feel nice to get out of the cab and stretch my legs a little bit.
14:18It can get kind of stuffy in there.
14:20Just enough to get us through the rest of our seat.
14:24Empty.
14:25And just the right amount.
14:28And back to our regularly scheduled programming.
14:33Just got the pivot moving.
14:36The rain has passed us by.
14:39And the tractor looks so pretty in the sunlight.
14:42Look at that.
14:46How are we looking up there?
14:48We're empty.
14:49Empty?
14:50Almost.
15:02That one's really empty.
15:04Got some time to throw some bags then, huh?
15:06Throw some bags.
15:07Alright.
15:08Let's get to it.
15:09Got to put my gloves on first.
15:16These are pretty heavy.
15:17But not the heaviest.
15:19These are...
15:21Oh, it's pretty light.
15:22These are only 40-pound bags.
15:25I have thrown 67-pound bags before.
15:28That makes your back hurt.
15:34Seed bags open up so nicely.
15:36They've got a little pull tab on them.
15:39I'm going to take my gloves off for this.
15:44Well done.
15:45Kind of ruined that.
15:46It's supposed to be way more satisfying.
15:48So usually Laura throws them up to me.
15:49I rip them open.
15:50Dump them in.
15:51Usually works because of the team.
15:52But for you guys, we're showing you how to do it.
15:54Yeah, here we go.
15:55See that?
15:56Look, it loops out so nice like that.
15:59Very satisfying.
16:00It's very satisfying.
16:00This is like the reason why you farm is to open seed bags.
16:04There you go.
16:05It's so much fun.
16:06And look at that.
16:07Ooh, we were planting pink seed before.
16:09Now we get green, blue, and purple seed.
16:12Shutting it off for tonight.
16:21We'll resume this party tomorrow.
16:23Well, another day.
16:50Another dollar.
16:52Or in a farmer's case, another day in the tractor cab.
16:57And it'll be, let's see here.
16:59May, April, wait.
17:01May, June, July, August, September, October.
17:08Six months until a dollar.
17:10My brain is fried.
17:11I've spent a lot of hours with this as my view.
17:17And I will say, I cannot complain.
17:20Because today, I woke up.
17:22Sun is shining.
17:24The sky is blue.
17:26The clouds are white.
17:28Everything is working.
17:31Fingers crossed.
17:33Knock on wood.
17:35For an office view, you can't really beat this.
17:39But at the same time, I kind of feel like I'm losing my mind in here.
17:46I've just been talking to myself.
17:49Does that make me a crazy person?
17:52Does anyone else talk to themselves?
17:53I think we're about ready to wrap planting up.
18:02Something I do not talk about very often on here, but I should because it's a pretty big part of my life, is how much I love to run.
18:10I spend a lot of time just sitting.
18:14And so when I'm out of the cab or out of the shop, I love to go run.
18:18It gives me time to clear my head, plan, think about things.
18:24And three years ago today, I ran my very first ever half marathon race.
18:29I ran track in high school and cross country.
18:32I've always really enjoyed it.
18:33But three years ago today is when I got hooked on racing.
18:36So since then, I have run several half marathons, and I signed up to run the 2025 New York City Marathon.
18:47It's going to be my first ever marathon.
18:49I ran 19 miles last week, and I'm starting to kind of slowly build up my training.
18:54I am so excited.
18:56But I am running with a charity.
18:58So the only way to actually get me in and run is if I hit my fundraising goal.
19:05So it would mean the world to me if you check out my charity.
19:07I'm running with Team Junior Achievement.
19:10They do a lot of really cool work in schools and do a lot of education for kids surrounding entrepreneurship and economics.
19:17They're a really, really cool charity.
19:19So it would mean the world to me if you would consider donating to them.
19:22All of the money goes straight to the charity, and through your donations is how I am able to actually run the New York City Marathon.
19:29So I'm going to have all that linked in the description, and hopefully I'm able to race.
19:35I would absolutely love it.
19:36I just love running.
19:37I feel like I was blessed with an able body, and I want to use it to its full potential.
19:44So while right now I'm stuck in the seated position, not for long.
19:49As soon as I'm out of the cab, I'm off and running.
19:52Grant thinks I'm crazy, but one of these days I'm going to convince him to run with me.
19:57Maybe not a marathon.
19:59We'll start him off with something a little bit smaller.
20:01Get him hooked.
20:02I think that's how people get hooked on farming.
20:05They start with something small, like maybe a little toy tractor at the checkout line or the little barn animals.
20:12You guys know what I'm talking about.
20:13You start carpet farming, and you've got a whole bin set up and buildings even maybe, and semi-trucks and small little tractors.
20:20And then eventually, one day, you find yourself sitting in a big one.
20:26It really is an addiction.
20:28Can you guys believe that we have been farming together for over five years now?
20:33I started Laura Farms in April of 2020, this YouTube channel.
20:39And there's a lot of you that have been with me since the very beginning.
20:43Talk about addicting.
20:45Once I started telling stories and sharing my life with you all, I just couldn't stop.
20:51And now we are going on over five years.
20:54It feels like it's been a blink of an eye.
20:59Does it feel like it's been a long time for you guys?
21:02It feels like it's gone by so fast.
21:05The tractor has changed, but these are the exact same pants I was wearing when I started my YouTube channel.
21:12Isn't that weird to think about?
21:13Maybe that means I need to buy new pants.
21:43While either Grant or I are in the planter or getting more seed or starter or fuel, one of us is sitting here and the other one is keeping the other person running and also checking pivots, moving them, starting them, etc.
21:58We have a company hired to come out and do our first round of spraying.
22:02So they come out and put on a residual that we water in.
22:05And that's going to keep our fields nice and clean all year.
22:10The end is in sight.
22:20And that, folks, is a wrap on planting 2025.
22:26Grant, honest thoughts and opinions?
22:29At the beginning of planting, I really disliked the planter.
22:33Now it's okay.
22:35Okay.
22:36The new tractor just makes it look pretty dumpy back there, but it's actually a pretty good planter.
22:40We've got a bargain planter hooked up to a super nice tractor.
22:45But for the most part, everything works this year.
22:48We had a few minor setbacks and breakdowns, but nothing major.
22:53We're both safe.
22:55The tractor made it okay.
22:56It has now been tested.
22:58Not in fire, but...
23:00The tractor has truly broke in now.
23:02The job that it was supposed to do.
23:04So I feel pretty good about that.
23:06It's a good planting season.
23:08Unfortunately, this just means that the work is not over.
23:12It is just starting.
23:14This is the kickoff to our year.
23:17So stick around because there is a lot more to come.
23:22Thank you so much for watching today's video and supporting us on our farming journey.
23:27Henry will see you in the next one.
23:29Bye.
23:29Bye.
