00:30In a kingdom far away lived a good king.
00:47The king was widowed, but he was blessed with wonderful children.
00:55His sons were all handsome princes, good-natured and studious.
01:00With laughter in their voices and the agile strength of young lions.
01:06His only daughter, Elise, was gentle and beautiful.
01:12And while their father, the king, loved them all, his sweet daughter, Elise, he loved best of all.
01:18Now their mother, the queen, had died young, and the children hardly remembered her.
01:23But the widowed king remembered, and he grew lonely.
01:26In time he remarried, believing that the new queen would be a loving mother to his children.
01:33He little dreamed that she was a wicked sorceress, hungry for power, who had no love to give.
01:40The new queen hated the royal children, and the affection that their father bestowed on them.
01:48Her hatred grew like fire.
01:50These are reserved for the royal guests.
01:55She snapped, and then used artful and cruel words to try to poison the king's heart.
01:59And in time, under the influence of his wife's charms, the unfortunate king almost forgot his children altogether.
02:22Of all the royal offspring, the evil queen hated Elise the most.
02:29For Elise's heart was pure and innocent.
02:33It was not long before the queen made a secret arrangement with a peasant couple to take Elise to live with them on their farm.
02:40The very first morning that the king went out hunting, she sent for them, and then dragged Elise roughly from her bed.
02:55You will go with these people.
03:16What will father say?
03:18Your father wishes it so.
03:21It will teach you to be humble and to make do with little.
03:37Elise desperately called out.
03:40Help me!
03:41Dear brothers, please help me!
03:44Oben!
03:45Voldemar!
03:47Carl!
03:47The boys heard their sister's cries and crowded at the window of their room to see her.
03:58Who are those people?
04:00Elise is a spoiled little brat.
04:04You're a wicked woman.
04:06If father were here, he would never allow this.
04:10We must tell our father.
04:12We must bring our sister back.
04:14Yes, we must.
04:15Silence!
04:16You squawk like foolish magpies.
04:20You tire me with your chatter.
04:26You tire me altogether.
04:34Become speechless, restless creatures.
04:40Be banished from my sight.
04:43Fly west away.
04:54Be birds by day and fall to earth at night.
05:01With that, the princes began to change.
05:09Feathers sprouted from their bodies and their arms turned into wings.
05:14The evil queen had wanted to make them into plain birds.
05:18But the young princes had such nobility of spirit that instead they turned into majestic wild swans.
05:25Overcome by the strange spell, they beat their strong wings and flew helplessly from the palace windows.
05:39They tried to land, but could not.
05:45And rose into the sky, circled higher and higher.
05:49And then they were gone.
05:51Years went by.
06:12One just like another.
06:15Elise worked hard on the peasant's farmland, tending the animals and learning simple skills like weaving and knitting.
06:22Sometimes her sadness over her lost brothers became unbearable, so she invented a game with a simple green leaf.
06:35By pricking a hole through it, and peeping through it at the sky, it seemed to her she could see her brother's bright eyes.
06:43She longed for them, for her father, and for her precious picture book.
06:50On her 15th birthday, Elise was brought back to the castle.
07:09When the queen saw how lovely Elise had become, all her envy and hate returned.
07:16She would have changed her into a bird, then and there, but the servants would have seen and told the king,
07:24Dear Elise!
07:28The queen took Elise roughly by the arm and led her to the royal bath.
07:33How beautiful you've grown!
07:37Come, I myself will bathe and anoint you to make you ready to greet your father.
07:43Evil toads, this very day.
07:49The queen commands that you obey.
07:52Make Elise become like you.
07:56Evil, ugly, through and through.
08:00So ugly and evil that even her own father won't know her.
08:08So loving and pure was Elise that the toads grew gentle and became three red poppies.
08:25The queen was enraged.
08:32She ripped Elise's dress and threw ashes in her hair and tangled them and smeared foul ointment on her face.
08:42Then, laughing with evil delight, she dragged her to the throne room where the king sat.
08:55Alas, the king did not recognize her, but instead grew angry.
09:01The poor deluded creature claims to be your daughter.
09:08What cruel joke is this?
09:10My daughter was a lovely girl.
09:12Alas, she is no more.
09:17Oh, dearest father, don't you know me?
09:19My brothers, where are they? They will know me.
09:22My sons, too, have been dead these seven years.
09:25Enough, shouted the queen.
09:27The girl is mad, or else she mocks you.
09:30Away with her.
09:31Remove this wretch at once.
09:36Guards took Elise out of the throne room and left her at the palace doors.
09:40She searched everywhere on the palace grounds for her brothers, stopping all the servants and asking if they had seen the king's sons.
09:57But no one could say for certain what had become of them.
10:01And no one recognized Elise as their sister.
10:04Only the swallows and the watchdog in the stables recognized her.
10:08But no one paid them any attention.
10:28Elise left the palace grounds and wandered far and long.
10:32She wept bitterly for her brothers.
10:34She did not know where she was going.
10:37But she resolved to find them, though it might take all her life.
10:42At night Elise came to a great forest, far away from any road or path.
10:48She had walked many miles that day.
10:51Her limbs ached and her eyes were heavy with fatigue.
10:55All night long she dreamed of her brothers.
11:06Of their happy childhood.
11:08And of her beautiful picture book.
11:10From one page emerged swans as white as milk with golden crowns.
11:17From another page a river goddess beckoned to them.
11:23From still another page there came a young king on horseback with a princess in his arms.
11:29She rose and wandered about until she came to a clear woodland pool.
11:44So muddy and ugly was her reflection that it frightened her and she quickly immersed herself in the cool, clear waters of the pool.
12:01She emerged clean and fresh and with renewed hope set out again on her journey.
12:08She still did not know where she was going.
12:12But she was sure that her heart would show her the way to her brothers.
12:16She had gone only a few steps when she met an old woman carrying a basket of berries.
12:23She asked the old woman if she had seen her brothers.
12:26No, but not long ago I saw swans with crowns on their heads in a nearby stream.
12:46Alice followed the stream all day long, all the way to where it flowed into the sea which lay before her without boundary or end.
13:02I will search for my brothers.
13:05No matter how long it takes and whatever harm has come to them, I will not rest until it is undone.
13:13The sun was setting.
13:16Alice saw tiny specks appear on the horizon.
13:20She stood up, held her arms out wide and welcomed the swans.
13:31As she watched, the swans transformed into handsome princes.
13:36Dear sister, we have been looking for you everywhere.
13:42She ran into their arms calling each one by name.
13:46It was Carl, the eldest brother, who told Elise the story of their curse.
13:51As long as the sun is in the sky, we fly about as wild swans.
13:57But when the night comes, we turn back into our human shape.
14:01We do not live here. We live across the sea.
14:05And tomorrow we must fly back.
14:08But the journey is dangerous, for the sea is too wide for us to cross in one day.
14:14Dear sister, have you the courage to come with us?
14:19Yes! Oh, take me with you. I cannot bear for us to be apart.
14:25All night long they gathered willow bark, reeds and rushes.
14:30Then they braided and bent and wove and knotted a net, supple and strong enough to carry Elise across the sea.
14:38Elise lay down upon the net and fell asleep.
14:42They flew on, and now the sun began its afternoon descent.
15:06The hour grew late. The sky darkened. The swans struggled to make headway.
15:12When the sun sets, my brother's wings would turn back into arms.
15:16They could not fly fast enough. Surely they would fall into the sea and drown.
15:22Elise saw a rock jutting up from the water.
15:27The rock seemed so very small and dangerous, but her brothers were all around her.
15:41And though the heavens blazed with lightning and shook with thunder, she was no longer afraid.
15:48At sunrise, the sea was smooth as glass. The swans took up the net again and resumed their flight.
16:00At last they reached the opposite shore and landed beside a cave on a mountain slope, which was their home.
16:07With the setting sun, they returned again to their human forms.
16:12I saw you, all of you, in a dream, she said.
16:18Our life is like a dream, said Carl, the oldest.
16:22I promise I will find a way to free you from the spell.
16:28Then her brothers led her into the cave to a bed of leaves and flowers.
16:34Dream sweet dreams, dear sister.
16:38May I dream how I can break the spell?
16:43She couldn't know it, but these were the last words she would speak for a long, long time.
16:53That night, Elise dreamed she was flying through clouds.
16:59A huge cloud castle towered over her.
17:03As she approached, Elise saw a woman in the doorway.
17:08And in the woman's hand there was a nettle.
17:11These stinging nettles can help you free your brothers, she said.
17:16But the anguish you must endure is great.
17:19Look well and gather only this kind that grows on the mountainside and on graves in churchyards.
17:27They will blister your skin, but you must crush them with your hands.
17:32Spin the flax and knit it into shirts.
17:36When you throw the nettle shirts over your brothers, the spell will be broken.
17:41But know that once you start, you must not speak.
17:47The first word you speak will pierce your brothers' hearts like a sword.
17:53Their lives are in your keeping.
17:56Can you be silent as the grave?
18:00It was night, and her brothers were still asleep.
18:27She hurried out quietly and climbed up the mountain to where nettles grew thickest and began her painful task.
18:34They stung.
18:36They pricked.
18:37They burned like fire.
18:39Elise plucked until she had all that her arms could hold.
18:43She worked the whole day long, crushing the nettles and twisting them into yarn.
18:49At sundown, her brothers returned.
18:57They were alarmed by her silence.
18:59They thought at first it was some new spell by their stepmother.
19:03But when they saw Elise's hands, they understood that her work was for their sake.
19:09The youngest brother wept, and wherever his tears fell, she felt no more pain, and the blisters disappeared.
19:18She worked the whole night through.
19:20By dawn, the first shirt was done.
19:24The next day, huntsmen appeared on the mountainside and ringed the entrance to the cave.
19:36Then one stepped forward and entered the cave.
19:41He was the most handsome among them, and he was the king of the land.
19:47The beautiful maiden!
19:52Why are you hiding here?
19:57Who are you?
19:59A princess!
20:00Yes, that I can see, despite your plain dress.
20:04But princess of what realm?
20:07She's mute, he thought.
20:10But her eyes say so much.
20:13Come with me, said the king.
20:16A cold, lonely cave is no place for a princess.
20:22Never in her life had Elise seen anyone so noble and so handsome.
20:28But she dared not speak, for her brother's lives depended upon her silence.
20:34The king gave her the finest room in the castle.
20:44He sent servants to clothe her and dress her hair.
20:47Then the king led her to the court, and everyone bowed before her beauty.
20:53Looking at her, the king was overjoyed and wanted her to be his bride.
21:00Only the king's minister of state shook his head and whispered that he feared the beautiful maiden was a witch,
21:09who had dazzled their eyes and infatuated the king.
21:13The king refused to listen to him and ordered a feast in her honor.
21:18Later, the king showed her the grand halls and fragrant gardens of his castle.
21:43But he could not make her smile.
21:46Elise could think only of her brothers and their sorrowful fate.
21:51She stood at the edge of the garden and gazed longingly out over the great sea and at the setting sun.
21:58I know something troubles you, he said.
22:01I would do anything to make it disappear.
22:05Come with me. I have something to show you.
22:08Here you may dream that you are back in your home in the forest.
22:15Will you be my queen?
22:21But she closed her eyes and shook her head sadly.
22:25Every day thereafter, the king repeated his request.
22:32But Elise's only reply was to work on and on night and day.
22:37Then one night, she found there was no flax left.
22:50She knew there would be more nettles in the graveyard and that she must gather them herself.
22:57Then she heard a beautiful voice and there in the moonlight she saw the fairy from her dreams.
23:17Do not falter. Do not be afraid.
23:22With renewed courage, Elise plucked all the nettles that she could carry and hurried back to the palace.
23:32In all the city, only one person saw her and that was the king's minister of state.
23:46He went straight to the king, roused him from his sleep and told him what he had seen.
23:51The king listened to his minister's words and doubt entered his heart for the first time.
23:58In the days that followed, the king grew sadder and sadder.
24:03Elise saw his sorrow and it troubled her greatly.
24:06But now she had almost finished her task.
24:09Only a single shirt remained.
24:12Once more, for a last time, she must go to the graveyard.
24:17Behind her came the minister.
24:22And at the minister's insistence, the king followed sadly behind.
24:27They watched as Elise went through the iron gates into the graveyard.
24:35And before their eyes, nettles grew wildly from the graves.
24:40Do you believe me now?
24:42Do you believe me now? whispered the minister into the king's ear.
24:45Be strong, my king.
24:47You must let the people judge her.
24:50And when the case was put before the ignorant people,
24:55they grew fearful and declared as one that Elise must die by fire.
25:01Elise was led away to a dark dungeon.
25:07All she was given to lie upon was her bundle of nettles and shirts.
25:11Yet they could have given her nothing more precious.
25:14She started her work again while the people mocked her from the street below.
25:19All night long she worked.
25:22The little mice ran across the floor, dragging the nettles to her.
25:27And a thrush at the barred window sang sweetly to give her courage.
25:32In the morning, the executioner came.
25:36You shall burn, and so shall all this witchcraft, he said, pointing to the nettle shirts.
25:47The people of the city poured into the square as Elise was taken to the pyre in a horse-drawn cart.
25:54The nettle shirts lay at her feet, and with sore and blistered hands she knitted the final one.
26:01Look at the witch, jeered the mob.
26:04Then there was a sudden gust of wind and a flapping of wings.
26:09The crowd looked up.
26:11And there were the swans, descending upon the cart like a great white cloud.
26:19The executioner grabbed Elise and was ready to light the pyre with his torch.
26:24Quickly Elise threw the nettle shirts over the wild swans.
26:29They were transformed into handsome young men.
26:43Oh, Elise! It is over! We are free!
26:48Valdemar, the youngest, was left with one great snow-white feathered wing, for the last shirt was missing a sleeve.
27:01Carl, the eldest, leaped up onto the pyre for all to see.
27:05Now, at last, the truth may be known, he cried.
27:10Our sister is innocent!
27:12And then he told them their story from start to finish.
27:17Everyone listening, man, woman and child, shed tears for the pains Elise had endured, and was moved and inspired by how brave she and her brothers had been.
27:30As Carl spoke, perfume filled the air.
27:34And before their eyes, every stake in the pyre blossomed with leaves and red roses.
27:41A single white rose sprouted from the very top.
27:45It shone like a star, as though proclaiming Elise's purity to the world.
27:54The young king plucked the rose and placed it on Elise's breast.
28:00Can you ever love me, my lady?
28:15For I doubted you, and do not deserve your love.
28:21Yes, with all my heart, answered Elise, in a voice now full and clear, which made all the bells of the kingdom ring with joy.
28:34And they lived happily in the end, which was surely as good as it had been in the beginning.
