00:01A Brazilian judge ordered house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro Monday for breaching preventive measures.
00:09According to Justice Alexandre de Moraes, Bolsonaro breached a ban on using social media imposed on him last month
00:15when he was also ordered to wear an electronic ankle tag.
00:19Moraes said the former president used friends' social media accounts to share messages of encouragement
00:26and incitement to attack the Supreme Federal Court and overt support for foreign intervention in the country's judiciary.
00:33The court ruling responds to the concerns about the former president's intentions of avoiding penalty in his coup attempt trial.
00:42This last decision from the Supreme Court also comes in the framework of the investigations against Bolsonaro
00:49and several other high officials in the coup attempt that took place early January 2023 following the electoral results of 2022
00:58when current president Lula da Silva won those democratic elections.
01:03And in that process, in that aftermath from the far right of Brazil, led by Bolsonaro himself,
01:09several calls were made to attack the democratic institutions of the nation and to disregard the elections.
01:17If we recall, it was on January 8th that Bolsonaro's reporters incited on his messages and calls to, according to him,
01:27protect the electoral results.
01:30They stormed the three branches of powers in the capital, Brasilia.
01:34All this also comes in a heightened context of denunciations by the Brazilian authorities
01:39of foreign interference on the justice system of Brazil.
01:44We have the impositions of tariffs, of over 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian products by the U.S.
01:52And openly saying that the only way that they would take away this tariff would be if the legal process
02:00that is being carried out according to the justice system in Brazil against Bolsonaro
02:05is stopped in a clear act of interference in the internal affairs of Brazil,
02:11something that Brazilian president Lula da Silva has denounced and has recently called that they are open to dialogue
02:19always, only if they are done in an equitable manner and with respect for the sovereignty of the country.
02:27And also pledging that they will always protect Brazil, and in this case, President Lula da Silva will always protect
02:33the interests of the Brazilian enterprises and the working people of Brazil.
02:39So this is the latest news we are getting from Brazil.
02:41The top court, the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, George Alexander Morales, has imposed house arrest
02:49starting today, Monday, against former President Jair Bolsonaro after his breach in the measures,
02:57preventive measures that were imposed on him last month, that he was not allowed to use social media
03:04and on Sunday afternoon in public demonstrations of the far right in Brazil in support of the former president.
03:12In support of the former president, he used his three sons' social media and friends' social media
03:21to send messages clearly inciting to aggression against the social justice system of Brazil.
03:28And so this is the latest we have.
03:30We are going to continue on top of what is happening in Brazil to follow up on the situation.
