00:00Hey, it's Carla from Mogan Carla Mornings on B96, and we are backstage at Lollapalooza with Isabel LaRosa.
00:05Hello.
00:06How are you?
00:07I'm so good. How are you?
00:08I'm fabulous, but I have to ask y'all.
00:11Y'all bandaged up. I need answers. Who do we beat up?
00:13I know the stage.
00:16I just, I drop down on my knees a lot when I perform because that's so cool.
00:21Because you're passionate?
00:22Because I'm so into it.
00:24But I had a pre-show and I kind of messed up my knees.
00:28And then today I was performing and I was, I dropped down on my knees and I was like, this hurts really bad.
00:34And I looked at it and I was like, oh, there's blood running on my leg.
00:36No.
00:37Did you have to like stop the performance?
00:39No. Oh, no. I go.
00:40Oh, she's a professional.
00:41Oh, no. But it was, it was fun. I just did not realize because the stage has like, it's almost like graded.
00:48I don't know how to explain it, but I was like, I couldn't go to all my knees.
00:51I was like balancing on one knee for the rest of it. It was, I'm good though. I'm living.
00:54Did anybody in the audience like try to hand you a bandaid?
00:58No, they weren't real ones.
00:59They were just, they were focused up here.
01:01No, they, they were looking at something else. I don't know what they were looking at.
01:04What, what was your performance like? This is your first Lollapalooza.
01:07This is my second one.
01:08Your second Lollapalooza.
01:09How would you explain the difference between your first time and your second time? Like, do you feel like a pro now?
01:14Oh, so much. I mean, I, it was my first festival ever when I played Lollapalooza two years ago and I was so nervous.
01:23I played the BMI stage and I mean, it was, it was such a great experience. Like it was so fun, but I feel like I know how to perform so much better now.
01:31I've toured so much in between these two shows and I just feel like, I just feel like I have a way better understanding of how to perform and put on a show.
01:40But it both, I'm so grateful for both of the performances, you know?
01:44Do you ever watch back your performances from when you first started and then kind of think like, wow, I've really grown so much.
01:50Sometimes I'll get like, you know, when photos give you like the memory. Yes. And I'll see it. And I was like, oh, you're like, oh, I saw myself all over that stage.
02:00Oh, that's what I was doing. Oh, great. No, cringe is good though. Cringe is good because you're growing.
02:06Exactly. It just means it, but I looked back at the videos and I was like, I was such a baby. I didn't know what I was doing at all. But that's why you, you've practiced and you grow.
02:14Exactly. And I know that you actually recently released an album, Raven. I did, yeah. And I love that you're dressed in all black because I feel like, I'm thinking, are Ravens the ones that like Edgar Allan Poe talks about? Yes.
02:25Okay. What was your inspiration behind this? Because I'm thinking not that so Raven. Yes. No, not quite.
02:32You're Edgar Allan Poe. Mysterious. I mean, okay. I mean, Ravens in general, like I love what they represent in folklore and I'm, I've always like, I've had like a weird obsession with them growing up.
02:44I used to listen to like podcasts about them with my mom. Um, and like they represent kind of death and rebirth and they are often associated with being like guides into the afterlife.
02:56And I think that that's really special. And the album talks about that. And I just, they were, it was so perfect and I'd wanted to do something with Ravens for so long.
03:05I was like, it should literally just be called Raven. I don't know what I'm doing. So do you have any songs that kind of like portray that or is it just like the whole album that has that vibe?
03:12I mean, um, specifically the song, see you again is about like losing a loved one and how it's like the knowledge that I know that I'll see you again.
03:20Um, and I think that just Ravens, I think bring me a sense of comfort because to me it means like, you know, oh, when, when I go, like you're going to be there with me.
03:29So. Oh, and I feel like that gives you a sense of peace too. Cause they're never truly gone. No, exactly.
03:34Did you perform that song on stage? I didn't. It honestly makes me really sad to perform and I can't do it.
03:38See, okay. That was my question. I, I read somewhere that like when you're thinking about memories, your brain doesn't know if it's actually happening or if you're just remembering.
03:47And when you do perform that song, if you do, do you feel like that person is on stage with you or do you try to avoid that feeling?
03:53I feel like it's interesting. I, I, I always think about, it's, it's really about my, my uncle who passed away. Um, and I, I, I definitely, it reminds me very much of him.
04:04And I just, as much as I love the song, I, I don't love performing it just cause it's, it's an intimate thing. Yeah, totally.
04:12Like you put it out there for the world, but maybe because so many people can relate to that, to love and loss.
04:17Mm-hmm. No, absolutely. You have another song too. My Girl. Yeah, it's very different. You're My Girl. Okay, let's talk about it.
04:24What, what was your inspiration behind that? Oh, my inspiration behind it. Um, I, so I had a crush on this girl for like a long time.
04:33Was she not reciprocating? No. You were like, I gotta write you a song for you now? No, she, she definitely does not like me.
04:38Uh, and that's, that's okay though. Yeah. It was just something where I, my brother and I had written
04:44this hook like two years ago and I was gonna tease it then. And it was something where I didn't, I was
04:50not comfortable, like, I don't know, talking about my sexuality online. It's a journey. It's a journey.
04:55And, um, I feel like I've grown up a lot in a couple years and it was just something that I really wanted
05:01to talk about now. And yeah. Are you more open about it now? Yeah, definitely. I think that I,
05:07I mean, I'm bi and I just, I don't know if it was very nerve wracking for me and I, I didn't,
05:13I didn't want to talk about it. So, but now I'm, I feel more comfortable with it and you know, um,
05:19I, I just, I was like, Oh, I hope she doesn't hear it. Do you think she would know that it's about
05:25her? Yes, for sure. I'm sure she's heard it. Someone sent that in the group chat and was like,
05:30you have a song written about you. It's okay. No, no, don't cringe at it because now we're talking
05:35about it and you can, and everyone knows that that's okay. That's, that's what, that's the
05:41journey. Exactly. I just, yeah. So has there ever been somebody that has like tried to be with you
05:47that you're, that you're like, okay, you know what? I don't really want this because you,
05:50you can see it from both ends of the spectrum, right? For sure. Yeah. I mean, well, that's
05:55definitely happened. And, um, I can write the other version of the song. You're like,
06:01and I don't want to and that's okay. And it's nothing against you. I it's, and that's just
06:05life. And that's just life. You know what I mean? But no, I, I've, I've experienced both,
06:10you know? Yeah. Okay. We're going to wrap it up and I'm going to ask you some super quick,
06:13rapid fire questions. Let's do it. Let's turn. Let's get ready. Okay. What song gets you in your
06:17feels? I love you by Billie Eilish. It's brutal. The last person that you DM'd or texted? Uh,
06:24Wisp. Uh, she's, I literally was just texting her. She's the sweetest person ever. I love her.
06:30She has, she's blonde and she has like a little bit of pink streaks. Oh, but she's the sweetest
06:35ever. You're just dropped an album. Oh man. And we will literally today. Did you plan it or did you
06:42wing it? I planned like half of it, but I kind of, honestly, I kind of winged it. I was, I was,
06:47I told someone to bring this from the hotel, like last minute. I was like, I need it. Someone,
06:51please get it. And then lastly, if you were to describe your music and emojis, what would you
06:56use? Raven for sure. The right. Well, is there a Raven? Like I think a bird. I don't know.
07:03A black heart and a bird. A black heart and a bird. Exactly. Maybe like a gravestone to be like
07:07really emo. I like that. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me. Congratulations on
07:13being here. A lot of things for your second time. I really appreciate it. And everyone go stream Raven.
07:17Yes.
07:21Yes.
