00:19how excited they are, and just I think the energy here at Lollapalooza.
00:23I've been here one time before, almost 10 years ago.

00:28So, I'm happy to be back, and to see the show going from what it was 10 years ago
00:36to what it is now, I think it's really, really fun.
00:39I feel really proud and happy.
00:40As you should.
00:41Let's talk about that transformation, because now you're going to be on the Lollapalooza stage,
00:45but you're going to see so many people that are going to be dressed up as Midnight's.
00:50The theme is Zara.
00:51I know. It's so amazing.
00:54It's so amazing.
00:56And I feel like it actually really fits into the festival aesthetic of it all.
01:00Of course.
01:00Because it's fun, it's whimsy, it's colorful, it's glittery.
01:05So, I look very much forward to looking out into the crowd, seeing some flowers in their
01:10hair, seeing some dolphins, who knows?
01:13You are the blueprint right now, and I think that's so exciting.
01:15It really is.
01:16And keeping in the momentum of excitement, Midnight Sun turned one year old last month.
01:21Isn't that crazy?
01:22Yes.
01:22And what has that been like for you, just seeing the song grow and grow and grow?
01:27It's been such a journey, because sometimes when you release music, it kind of goes like
01:32it's very popular in the beginning, and then it kind of trails off.
01:35But what I feel like with Midnight Sun is that it just keeps growing and growing and growing.
01:39And I think it's sort of a testament to never giving up on your dreams and your visions.
01:46And I think I just knew in my soul that this is an amazing song, and it might take a
01:51minute
01:51for people to catch on to it.
01:53But I know, like, I believe in this song so much.
01:56So, I just kept pushing it.
01:58I kept doing TikToks to it.
02:00I kept performing it and just, like, really put it out there.
02:03And then, eventually, people were like, wait a minute.
02:09It's a pop.
02:09You know, yeah.
02:10Well, I think it also helps that, like, you are smack in the middle of your tour.

02:14And there are so many more moments that have connected people to the song now.

02:19And, I mean, I want to talk about just you open a lot of your shows with that song.
02:23And I've seen it.
02:25Yes.
02:25And I wanted to know whose idea it was for you to be in Dang Near a Back Bend
02:31and singing that song up in the air.
02:35Oh, it was my amazing choreographer, Zoe.
02:39And she was just like, we were kind of just vibing it out in the rehearsals.
02:44Because now it feels and looks seamless because we've been doing it so many times.
02:49Yes.
02:49But the first couple of times were like, I don't know how we're going to be able to do this.
02:54And I think the idea started because when I was opening for Tate on her tour almost a year ago
02:59now as well,
03:00we started off, I started with my song Pretty Ugly.
03:04And then they were carrying me in, like, unstretched arms.
03:08And I was, like, laying like this.
03:09And then they would throw me up.
03:11Very princess of you.
03:11I love that.
03:12Yes.
03:12They would, like, throw me up, catch me.
03:14Very cheerleader-esque.
03:15I love it.
03:16And I think that's what made me, like, that's fun.

03:21Let's do something that feels a little sort of weird in a way.

03:43What a year it has been since that moment.

03:45We actually have the chance to speak the night before Midnight Sun, the album dropped.

03:50And we were really talking about Crush.
03:52Yeah.
03:53And that was kind of, like, what you were pushing at the time.
03:55When the album came out, people gravitated towards different songs.
03:58Which song were you the most happy, excited that people popped off with?
04:04Uh, I think Midnight Sun is, like, the main character of the album.
04:09Right, right, right.
04:09And it's called Midnight Sun.
04:10So I'm very proud of that song.
04:12I personally love, I love Saturn's return.
04:16And I always kind of knew that it wasn't this, like, big smash.
04:20You know?
04:21It's quite, uh, it's definitely on the more calm side.
04:26Yeah.
04:26Compared to the other songs on the album.
04:28But I think you need it, right?
04:29You do.
04:29You need the dynamic.
04:30And I feel really proud because it feels really authentic and real.
04:35And I feel honest in that lyric.
04:40And I was just going through my Saturn's return.
04:42And, like, all the changes in my head and my life of what it's like to kind of grow up.
04:48And become a real grown-up, in a way.
04:51I think, growing up, people think of it just as, like, a linear time thing.
04:55Yeah.
04:56But I think it's such an evolution.
04:58No, it totally is.
04:58Of who you are as a person.
05:00For people that aren't familiar with, like, Saturn's return.
05:02What would you, how would you explain it to them?
05:05So, what I've learned is that for Saturn to come back to the same place it was when you were
05:12born,
05:12it takes around 27, 28 years.
05:17So, at that point, people usually say that's when you reach your true adulthood.
05:22Right.
05:22And you can feel, like, just a lot of things change in your life.
05:27And at that moment, as I was writing it, I was going through, like, my peak Saturn's return.
05:31And there were so many things that were changing in my life.
05:34Like, a lot of people I had to sort of distance myself from.
05:40I had a lot of new relationships coming in with my music.
05:43A lot of things were happening in my career.
05:45Like, it was just a lot of, like...
05:48Change.
05:48Whoa, change.
05:49A lot of change.
05:50Change is scary, but so good.
05:51Yes, yes.
05:52I think it's necessary.
05:52And now, I feel like...
05:55I think you're right.
05:56I think life is an evolution.
05:58And nothing is just like this all the time.
06:01But I'm in a really, really good place.
06:03I'm excited.

07:15Like, oh, you know, it's so insane.
07:19And she's such an icon.

07:21She's such a living legend.
07:23So she actually heard about the project from my A&R.
07:28And they know each other quite well.
07:31And she heard about this, like, girls.

07:37And she was like, oh, you know, like, what song was she thinking of, like, does she have
