This is an audio recording of James Thurber's classic fantasy tale THE 13 CLOCKS, read by the Academy/Emmy/Olivier/Grammy Award-winning actor/writer/director Peter Ustinov.
On a lonely hill, in a gloomy castle in which 13 clocks have all frozen at the same time, lives a cold, aggressive Duke and his niece the beautiful Princess Saralinda.
Many princes have come to woo her, but none have been able to complete the impossible tasks set them by the Duke ... so far, because a new prince, disguised as a minstrel, has come. However, it is doubtful whether even he can complete the Duke's latest task and win the Princess' hand ... not without the help of the mysterious (yet sometimes forgetful) Golux. Will this unlikely duo complete the Duke's task within the assigned time limit ... or will this prince become the latest to fall before the Duke's sword and be fed to the geese like so many before him?

00:00:00Once upon a time, in a gloomy castle on a lonely hill, where there were thirteen clocks that wouldn't go,
00:00:07there lived a cold, aggressive duke and his niece, the Princess Saralinda.
00:00:12She was warm in every wind and weather, but he was always cold.
00:00:18His hands were as cold as his smile and almost as cold as his heart.
00:00:23He wore gloves when he was asleep, and he wore gloves when he was awake,
00:00:26which made it difficult for him to pick up pins or coins or the kernels of nuts or to tear the wings from nightingales.
00:00:34He was six foot four and forty-six, and even colder than he thought he was.
00:00:41One eye wore a velvet patch, the other glittered through a monocle,
00:00:45which made half his body seem closer to you than the other half.
00:00:49He had lost one eye when he was twelve,
00:00:51for he was fond of peering into nests and lairs in search of birds and animals to maul.
00:00:57One afternoon, a mother shrike had mauled him first.
00:01:01His nights were spent in evil dreams, and his days were given to wicked schemes.
00:01:09Wickedly scheming, he would limp and cackle through the cold corridors of the castle,
00:01:14planning new impossible feats for the suitors of Saralinda to perform.
00:01:18He did not wish to give her hand in marriage, since her hand was the only warm hand in the castle.
00:01:23Even the hands of his watch and the hands of all the thirteen clocks were frozen.
00:01:27They had all frozen at the same time on a snowy night seven years before,
00:01:31and after that it was always ten minutes to five in the castle.
00:01:37Travellers and mariners would look up at the gloomy castle on the lonely hill and say,
00:01:41time lies frozen there, it's always then, it's never now.
00:01:49The cold duke was afraid of now, for now has warmth and urgency and then is dead and buried.
00:01:57Now might bring a certain night of gay and shining courage,
00:02:01But no, the cold duke muttered, the prince will break himself against a new and awful labour,
00:02:08a place too high to reach, a thing too far to find, a burden too heavy to lift.
00:02:15The duke was afraid of now, but he tampered with the clocks to see if they would go,
00:02:20out of a strange perversity, praying that they wouldn't.
00:02:24Tinkers and tinkerers and a few wizards who happened by tried to start the clocks
00:02:29with tools or magic words or by shaking them and cursing, but nothing word or ticked.
00:02:35The clocks were dead, and in the end, brooding on it,
00:02:38the duke decided that he had murdered time,
00:02:40slain it with his sword and wiped his bloody blade upon its beard
00:02:44and left it lying there bleeding hours and minutes,
00:02:47its springs uncoiled and sprawling, its pendulum disintegrating.
00:02:54The duke limped because his legs were of different lengths.
00:02:59The right one had outgrown the left because, when he was young,
00:03:02he had spent his mornings place-kicking pups and punting kittens.
00:03:07He would say to a suitor,
00:03:08What is the difference in the length of my legs?
00:03:12And if the youth replied,
00:03:13Why, one is shorter than the other,
00:03:15the duke would run him through the sword he carried in his sword-cane
00:03:20and feed him to the geese.
00:03:22The suitor was supposed to say,
00:03:26Why, one is longer than the other.
00:03:31Many a prince had been run through for naming the wrong difference.
00:03:34Others had been slain for offences equally trivial,
00:03:38tramping the duke's camellias,
00:03:39failing to praise his wines,
00:03:41staring too long at his gloves,
00:03:43gazing too long at his niece.
00:03:46Those who survived his scorn and sword
00:03:49were given incredible labours to perform
00:03:52in order to win his niece's hand,
00:03:54the only warm hand in the castle
00:03:56where time had frozen to death
00:03:57at ten minutes to five one snowy night.
00:04:01They were told to cut a slice of moon
00:04:03or change the ocean into wine.
00:04:06They were set to finding things that never were
00:04:08and building things that could not be.
00:04:09They came and tried and failed and disappeared
00:04:12and never came again.
00:04:15And some, as I have said, were slain
00:04:17for using names that start with X
00:04:19or dropping spoons or wearing rings
00:04:21or speaking disrespectfully of sin.
00:04:28The castle and the duke grew colder
00:04:30and Sarah Linda, as a princess will,
00:04:33even in a place where time lies frozen,
00:04:36became a little older,
00:04:37but only a little older.
00:04:40She was nearly twenty-one
00:04:41the day a prince, disguised as a minstrel,
00:04:43came singing to the town
00:04:45that lay below the castle.
00:04:46He called himself Xingu,
00:04:49which was not his name and dangerous
00:04:51since the name began with X
00:04:52and still does.
00:04:55He was, quite properly,
00:04:56a thing of shreds and patches,
00:04:58a ragged minstrel singing for pennies
00:05:01and the love of singing.
00:05:03Xingu, as he so rashly called himself,
00:05:06was the youngest son of a powerful king,
00:05:09but he had grown weary of rich attire
00:05:11and banquets and tournaments
00:05:12and the available princesses of his own realm
00:05:15and yearned to find in a far land
00:05:18the maiden of his dreams,
00:05:20singing as he went,
00:05:22learning the life of the lowly
00:05:24and possibly slaying a dragon
00:05:27here and there.
00:05:28At the sign of the silver swan
00:05:32in the town below the castle
00:05:33where taverners, travellers,
00:05:35tale-tellers,
00:05:36tosspots, troublemakers
00:05:37and other townspeople were gathered,
00:05:39he heard of Saralinda,
00:05:42loveliest princess
00:05:43on all the thousand islands
00:05:44of the ocean seas.
00:05:46If you can turn the rain to silver,
00:05:49she is yours,
00:05:51a taverner leered.
00:05:53If you can slay the thorny boar of Borythorn,
00:05:57she is yours,
00:05:58grinned a traveller,
00:05:59but there is no thorny boar of Borythorn,
00:06:02which makes it hard.
00:06:05What makes it even harder
00:06:07is her uncle's scorn and sword,
00:06:09sneered a tale-teller.
00:06:11He will slit you from your guddle to your zatch?
00:06:14Ah, the duke is seven feet nine inches tall
00:06:18and only twenty-eight years old,
00:06:20or in his prime,
00:06:22a tosspot gurgled.
00:06:24His hand is cold enough to stop a clock
00:06:26and strong enough to choke a ball
00:06:28and swift enough to catch the wind.
00:06:30He breaks up minstrels in his soup
00:06:32like crackers.
00:06:35Our minstrel here will warm
00:06:37the old man's heart with song,
00:06:39dazzle him with jewels and gold,
00:06:42a troublemaker simpered.
00:06:44He'll trample on the duke's camellia,
00:06:46spill his wine,
00:06:47and blunt his sword
00:06:49and say his name begins with X,
00:06:51and in the end the duke will say,
00:06:53Take Saralinda with my blessing,
00:06:56O lordly prince of rags and tags,
00:06:58O rider of the sun!
00:07:01The troublemaker weighed eighteen stone,
00:07:03but the minstrel picked him up
00:07:05and tossed him in the air
00:07:06and caught him and set him down again.
00:07:08Then he paid his due
00:07:09and left the swan.
00:07:12I've seen that youth before,
00:07:14the traveller mews,
00:07:16staring after Xingu.
00:07:17But he was neither ragamuffin then
00:07:20nor minstrel.
00:07:22Now let me see,
00:07:24where was it?
00:07:25In his soup,
00:07:27the toss-pot said,
00:07:28like crackers.
00:07:34Outside the tavern that night
00:07:35was lighted by a rocking yellow moon
00:07:37that held a white star in its horn.
00:07:40In the gloomy castle on the hill
00:07:42a lantern gleamed and darkened,
00:07:44came and went,
00:07:45as if the gaunt duke stalked from room to room,
00:07:48stabbing bats and spiders,
00:07:50killing mice.
00:07:51Dazzle the duke with jewels,
00:07:54the minstrel said aloud.
00:07:55There's something in it somewhere,
00:07:57but what it is and where I cannot think.
00:08:00He wondered if the duke would order him
00:08:02to cause a fall of purple snow,
00:08:04or make a table out of sawdust,
00:08:05or merely slit him from his guggle
00:08:07to his zatch,
00:08:08and say to Sarah Linda,
00:08:10There he lies, your latest fool,
00:08:13a nameless minstrel.
00:08:14I'll have my varlets feed him to the geese.
00:08:18The minstrel shuddered in the moonlight,
00:08:21wondered where his zatch and guggle were.
00:08:24He wondered how and why and when
00:08:26he could invade the castle.
00:08:27The duke was never known to ask
00:08:29a ragged minstrel to his table,
00:08:31or set a task for him to do,
00:08:33or let him meet a princess.
00:08:35I'll think of some way,
00:08:37thought the prince.
00:08:38I'll think of something.
00:08:42The hour was late,
00:08:43and revellers began to reel
00:08:45and stagger home from inns and taverns,
00:08:48none in rags,
00:08:49and none in tags,
00:08:50and some in velvet gowns.
00:08:53One third of the dogs in town
00:08:55began to bark.
00:08:56The minstrel took his lute
00:08:57from his shoulder
00:08:58and improvised a song.
00:09:01He had thought of something.
00:09:04Hark, hark, the dogs do bark,
00:09:06but only one in three.
00:09:09They bark at those in velvet gowns,
00:09:11they never bark at me.
00:09:15A tale-teller tottering home to bed
00:09:17laughed at the song.
00:09:19The troublemakers and tosspots
00:09:21began to gather and listen.
00:09:23The duke is full of velvet gowns,
00:09:26he'll ask you all to tea,
00:09:29but I'm in rags and I'm in tags,
00:09:31he'll never send for me.
00:09:34The townspeople crowded round the minstrel,
00:09:37laughing and cheering.
00:09:37He's a bold one, rags,
00:09:40he's making songs about the duke,
00:09:42giggled a strut furrow
00:09:43who had joined the crowd.
00:09:45The minstrel went on singing.
00:09:47Hark, hark, the dogs do bark,
00:09:49the duke is fond of kittens,
00:09:52he likes to take their insides out
00:09:55and use their fur for mittens.
00:09:59The crowd fell silent in awe and wonder,
00:10:02for the townspeople knew
00:10:03the duke had slain eleven men
00:10:04for merely staring at his hands,
00:10:07hands that were gloved in velvet gloves,
00:10:09bright with rubies and with diamonds.
00:10:12Fearing to be seen in the doomed
00:10:13and desperate company of the mad minstrel,
00:10:16the revellers slunk off to their homes
00:10:18to tell their wives.
00:10:20Only the traveller,
00:10:21who thought he had seen the singer
00:10:23some other where and time,
00:10:25lingered to warn him of his peril.
00:10:28I've seen you shining in the lists,
00:10:32he said,
00:10:33or toppling knights in battle,
00:10:35or breaking men in two like crackers.
00:10:39You must be Tristram's son,
00:10:41or Lancelot,
00:10:42or are you Tyne or Tora?
00:10:46A wandering minstrel, I,
00:10:48the minstrel said,
00:10:49a thing of shreds and zatches.
00:10:51He bit his tongue in consternation
00:10:53at the slip it made.
00:10:54Even if you are mighty Zorn of Zorna,
00:10:57said the man,
00:10:58you could not escape the fury of the Duke.
00:11:00He'll slit you from your guggle
00:11:02to your zatch from here to there.
00:11:04He touched the minstrel's stomach
00:11:06and his throat.
00:11:08I know now what to guard,
00:11:10the minstrel sighed.
00:11:12A black figure in velvet mask
00:11:14and hood and cloak
00:11:14disappeared behind the tree.
00:11:17Ah, the cold Duke's spine chief,
00:11:20the traveller said,
00:11:21a man named Whisper.
00:11:24Tomorrow he will die.
00:11:26The minstrel waited.
00:11:28He'll die because to name your sins
00:11:30he'll have to mention mittens.
00:11:33I leave at once for other lands
00:11:35since I have mentioned mittens,
00:11:38he sighed.
00:11:39You'll never live to wed his niece.
00:11:41You'll only die to feed his geese.
00:11:44Goodbye, good night, and, er,
00:11:47sorry.
00:11:48The traveller vanished like a fly
00:11:51in the mouth of a frog
00:11:52and the minstrel was left alone
00:11:53in the dark, deserted street.
00:11:56Somewhere a clock dropped
00:11:57a stony chime into the night.
00:12:00The minstrel began to sing again.
00:12:02A soft finger touched his shoulder
00:12:03and he turned to see a little man
00:12:05smiling in the moonlight.
00:12:06He wore an indescribable hat.
00:12:08His eyes were wide and astonished,
00:12:10as if everything were happening
00:12:11for the first time.
00:12:12And he had a dark, describable beard.
00:12:16If you have nothing better
00:12:17than your songs, he said,
00:12:19you are somewhat less than much
00:12:21and only a little more than anything.
00:12:24I manage in my fashion,
00:12:26the minstrel said,
00:12:26and he strummed his lute and sang.
00:12:29Hark, hark, the dogs do bark.
00:12:32The cravens are going to bed.
00:12:34Some will rise and greet the sun,
00:12:37but whisper will be dead.
00:12:40The old man lost his smile.
00:12:43Who are you?
00:12:44The minstrel asked.
00:12:45I am the Gullocks,
00:12:47said the Gullocks proudly.
00:12:49The only Gullocks in the world
00:12:50and not a mere device.
00:12:52Oh, you resemble one,
00:12:53the minstrel said,
00:12:54as Sarah Linda resembles the rose.
00:12:57I resemble only half the things
00:12:59I say I don't,
00:13:01the Gullocks said.
00:13:02The other half resemble me,
00:13:04he sighed.
00:13:06I must always be on hand
00:13:08when people are in peril.
00:13:10My peril is my own,
00:13:11the minstrel said.
00:13:12Half of it is yours
00:13:14and half is Sarah Linda's.
00:13:17I hadn't thought of that,
00:13:18the minstrel said.
00:13:19I place my faith in you
00:13:20and where you lead I follow.
00:13:22Not so fast,
00:13:24the Gullocks said.
00:13:25Half the places I have been to
00:13:27never wear.
00:13:28I make things up.
00:13:30Half the things I say
00:13:32are there,
00:13:33cannot be found.
00:13:35When I was young
00:13:36I told a tale of buried gold
00:13:38and men from leagues around
00:13:39dug in the woods.
00:13:41I dug myself.
00:13:43But why?
00:13:45Well, I thought
00:13:45the tale of treasure
00:13:46might be true.
00:13:48You said you made it up.
00:13:50I know I did,
00:13:51but then I didn't know I had.
00:13:53I forget things too.
00:13:56The minstrel felt
00:13:56a vague uncertainty.
00:13:58I make mistakes,
00:14:00but I'm on the side of good,
00:14:02the Gullocks said,
00:14:03by accident and happenchance.
00:14:06I had high hopes
00:14:07of being evil
00:14:08when I was two,
00:14:09but in my youth
00:14:10I came upon a firefly
00:14:12burning in a spider's web.
00:14:14I saved the victim's life.
00:14:16The fireflies,
00:14:18said the minstrel.
00:14:19No, spiders.
00:14:20The blinking arsonist
00:14:22had set the web on fire.
00:14:25The minstrel's
00:14:25uncertainty increased,
00:14:27but as he thought
00:14:28to slip away
00:14:28a deep bell sounded
00:14:29in the castle
00:14:30and many lights appeared
00:14:31and voices shouted
00:14:32orders and commands.
00:14:34A stream of lanterns
00:14:35started flowing
00:14:35down the darkness.
00:14:38Oh, the duke
00:14:38has heard your songs,
00:14:40the Gullocks said.
00:14:41The fat is in the fire,
00:14:43the dye is cast,
00:14:44the jig is up,
00:14:45the goose is cooked,
00:14:46and the cat,
00:14:47well,
00:14:48is out of the bag.
00:14:50My hour has struck,
00:14:52the minstrel said.
00:14:53They heard a faint
00:14:54and distant rasping sound
00:14:56as if a blade
00:14:57of steel
00:14:57were being
00:14:58sharpened on a stone.
00:15:00The duke prepares
00:15:01to feed you
00:15:02to his geese,
00:15:03the Gullocks said.
00:15:04We must invent
00:15:05a tail
00:15:06to stay his hand.
00:15:09What manner of tail,
00:15:10the minstrel asked.
00:15:11A tail,
00:15:12the Gullocks said,
00:15:13to make the duke
00:15:14believe that slaying you
00:15:16would light a light
00:15:17in someone else's heart.
00:15:18He hates a light
00:15:20in people's hearts.
00:15:21So you must say
00:15:22a certain prince
00:15:23and princess
00:15:24can't be wed
00:15:25until the evening
00:15:26of the second day
00:15:28after the duke
00:15:29has fed you
00:15:29to his geese.
00:15:31I wish that you
00:15:32would not keep saying
00:15:33that,
00:15:33the minstrel said.
00:15:35Well,
00:15:36the tail sounds true,
00:15:37the Gullocks said,
00:15:38and very like
00:15:39a witch's spell.
00:15:40The duke has awe
00:15:41of witch's spells.
00:15:43I am certain
00:15:43he will stay
00:15:44his hand,
00:15:45I think.
00:15:46The sound of
00:15:48tramping feet
00:15:49came nearer
00:15:50and nearer.
00:15:51The iron guards
00:15:52of the duke
00:15:52closed in,
00:15:53their lanterns gleaming
00:15:54and their spears
00:15:56and armour.
00:15:57Halt!
00:15:58There was a clang
00:15:59and clanking.
00:16:01Do not arrest
00:16:01my friend,
00:16:02the youth implored.
00:16:04What friend?
00:16:05The captain growled.
00:16:07The minstrel
00:16:08looked around him
00:16:09and about him,
00:16:09but there was
00:16:09no one there.
00:16:11A guard guffawed
00:16:12and said,
00:16:13Maybe he's seen
00:16:15the Gullocks.
00:16:15There isn't
00:16:17any Gullocks.
00:16:18I've been to school
00:16:18and now,
00:16:19the captain said.
00:16:21The minstrel's
00:16:21uncertainty
00:16:22increased again.
00:16:23Fall in,
00:16:24the captain bawled.
00:16:25Dress up that line.
00:16:28You heard him,
00:16:29dress it up,
00:16:30the sergeant said.
00:16:31They marched
00:16:32the minstrel
00:16:32to the dungeon
00:16:33in the castle.
00:16:34A stream of lantern
00:16:35lights flowed
00:16:37slowly up the hill.
00:16:41It was morning.
00:16:43The cold duke
00:16:44gazed out a window
00:16:45of the castle
00:16:46as if he were
00:16:47watching flowers
00:16:48in bloom
00:16:49or flying birds.
00:16:51He was watching
00:16:52his varlets
00:16:53feeding whisper
00:16:53to the geese.
00:16:55He turned away
00:16:56and took three limps
00:16:57and stared at the minstrel,
00:16:59standing in the great
00:16:59hall of the castle,
00:17:00both hands bound
00:17:01behind him.
00:17:03What manner of prince
00:17:04is this you speak of?
00:17:06And what manner of maiden
00:17:08does he love
00:17:09to use a word
00:17:10that makes no sense
00:17:11and has no point?
00:17:13His voice sounded
00:17:14like iron
00:17:15dropped on velvet.
00:17:17A noble prince,
00:17:18a noble lady,
00:17:19the minstrel said.
00:17:20When they are wed,
00:17:21a million people
00:17:22will be glad.
00:17:24The duke took his sword
00:17:25out of his sword cane
00:17:26and stared at it.
00:17:28He limped across
00:17:28and faced his captive
00:17:29and touched his guggle
00:17:31softly with a point
00:17:33and touched his zatch
00:17:34and sighed
00:17:35and frowned
00:17:36and put the sword away.
00:17:38We shall think
00:17:39of some amusing task
00:17:41for you to do,
00:17:41he said.
00:17:42I do not like
00:17:43your tricks and guile.
00:17:45I think there is no prince
00:17:47or maiden
00:17:47who would wed
00:17:48if I should slay you,
00:17:50but I am neither sure
00:17:51nor certain.
00:17:53He grinned
00:17:54and said again,
00:17:55We'll think
00:17:56of some amusing task
00:17:58for you to do.
00:18:00But I am not a prince,
00:18:02the minstrel said,
00:18:03and only princes
00:18:04may aspire
00:18:05to Sarah Linda's hand.
00:18:06The cold duke
00:18:07kept on grinning.
00:18:09I then will make
00:18:10a prince of you,
00:18:11he said,
00:18:12the prince of rags
00:18:14and jingles.
00:18:15He clapped his gloves
00:18:17together
00:18:17and two violets
00:18:18appeared without a word
00:18:19or sound.
00:18:21Take him to his dungeon,
00:18:23said the duke.
00:18:24Feed him water
00:18:25without bread
00:18:26and bread
00:18:27without water.
00:18:30The violets
00:18:30were taking the minstrel
00:18:31out of the great hall
00:18:32when down the marble stairs
00:18:34the princess
00:18:35Sarah Linda floated
00:18:36like a cloud.
00:18:37The duke's eyes
00:18:38gleamed like crystal.
00:18:39The minstrel
00:18:39gazed in wonder.
00:18:41The princess Sarah Linda
00:18:42was tall
00:18:43with frisiers
00:18:44in her dark hair
00:18:45and she wore serenity
00:18:46brightly like a rainbow.
00:18:49It was not easy
00:18:50to tell her mouth
00:18:50from the rose
00:18:51or her brow
00:18:53from the white lilac.
00:18:54Her voice
00:18:55was far away music
00:18:56and her eyes
00:18:57were candles
00:18:58burning on a tranquil night.
00:19:00She moved across
00:19:01the room
00:19:02like wind in violets
00:19:03and her laughter
00:19:04sparkled on the air
00:19:05which from her presence
00:19:07gained a faint
00:19:08and undreamed fragrance.
00:19:11The prince
00:19:12was frozen
00:19:12by her beauty
00:19:13but not cold
00:19:15and the duke
00:19:16who was cold
00:19:17but not frozen
00:19:19held up the palms
00:19:20of his gloves
00:19:21as if she were
00:19:22a fire
00:19:23at which
00:19:23to warm his hands.
00:19:25The minstrel
00:19:26saw the blood
00:19:26come warmly
00:19:27to the lame man's cheeks.
00:19:29This thing
00:19:30of rags
00:19:31and tags
00:19:32and tatters
00:19:32will play
00:19:33our little game
00:19:34he told his niece
00:19:35his voice
00:19:36like iron
00:19:37on velvet.
00:19:38I wish him well
00:19:39the princess said.
00:19:42The minstrel
00:19:42broke his bonds
00:19:43and took her hand
00:19:44in his
00:19:44but it was slashed away
00:19:46by the swift cane
00:19:47of the duke.
00:19:48Take him
00:19:48to his dungeon now
00:19:49he said.
00:19:51He stared coldly
00:19:52at the minstrel
00:19:52through his monocle.
00:19:54You'll find
00:19:54the most amusing
00:19:56bats
00:19:56and spiders
00:19:57there.
00:19:58I wish him well
00:20:01the princess
00:20:01said again
00:20:02and the violets
00:20:03took the minstrel
00:20:04to his dungeon.
00:20:06When the great
00:20:07iron door
00:20:07of the dungeon
00:20:08clanked behind
00:20:08the minstrel
00:20:09he found himself
00:20:10alone in blackness.
00:20:12A spider
00:20:12swinging on a strand
00:20:13of web
00:20:14swung back and forth.
00:20:16The zickering
00:20:16of bats
00:20:17was echoed
00:20:18by the walls.
00:20:19The minstrel
00:20:20took a step
00:20:21avoiding snakes
00:20:21and something squirmed.
00:20:23Take care
00:20:24the gollock said.
00:20:25You're on my foot.
00:20:26Why are you here
00:20:27the minstrel
00:20:28cried?
00:20:28I forgot
00:20:29something.
00:20:30I forgot
00:20:30about the task
00:20:34the duke
00:20:34will set you.
00:20:36The minstrel
00:20:37thought of
00:20:37swimming lakes
00:20:38too wide
00:20:38to swim
00:20:39of turning
00:20:40liquids
00:20:40into stone
00:20:41or finding
00:20:42boneless
00:20:43creatures
00:20:44made of bone.
00:20:45How came
00:20:46you here?
00:20:47he asked.
00:20:47And can you
00:20:48leave?
00:20:49I never know
00:20:50the gollock
00:20:51said.
00:20:51My mother
00:20:52was a witch
00:20:52but rather
00:20:53mediocre
00:20:54in her way.
00:20:55When she
00:20:56tried to
00:20:56turn a thing
00:20:57to gold
00:20:57it turned
00:20:58to clay
00:20:59and when she
00:21:00changed her

00:21:09said his friend
00:21:10who often
00:21:11cast his spells

00:21:30for monks

00:33:05in the world
00:33:06the prince was
00:33:07in no mood
00:33:08for the old man's
00:33:09gaiety and cheer
00:33:10the gollocks
00:33:11did not seem
00:33:11wonderful to him
00:33:12now
00:33:12and even
00:33:13his indescribable hat
00:33:14was suddenly
00:33:15describable
00:33:16the duke
00:33:17thinks you're
00:33:18not so wise
00:33:19as he thinks
00:33:19you think

00:33:20he said
00:33:21the gollocks
00:33:22smiled
00:33:23i think he's
00:33:25not so wise
00:33:25as he thinks
00:33:26i think he is
00:33:27he said
00:33:28i was there
00:33:29i know the terms
00:33:30i had thought
00:33:31that only dragonflies
00:33:33and angels
00:33:33think of time
00:33:34never having been
00:33:35an angel
00:33:36or a dragonfly
00:33:37how were you there
00:33:38the prince said
00:33:39in surprise
00:33:40i am

00:33:42the gollocks said
00:33:44or at any rate
00:33:45he thinks i am
00:33:46never trust a spy
00:33:48you cannot see
00:33:49the duke is
00:33:50lamer than i'm old
00:33:51and i'm shorter
00:33:52than he is cold
00:33:53but it comes to you
00:33:54with some surprise
00:33:55that i'm wiser
00:33:56than he is wise
00:33:57the prince's courage
00:33:59began to return
00:34:00i think you're
00:34:01the most remarkable
00:34:02man in the world
00:34:03he said
00:34:03who thought
00:34:05not so
00:34:05a moment since
00:34:06knows not the apple
00:34:07from the quench
00:34:08the gollocks said
00:34:08he scowled
00:34:10we now have only
00:34:12eight and ninety hours
00:34:13to find a thousand gems
00:34:15he said
00:34:16you said that you had
00:34:17other plans than one
00:34:18the prince reminded him
00:34:19what plans
00:34:22the gollocks asked
00:34:23you didn't say
00:34:24said Zorn
00:34:25the gollocks closed his eyes
00:34:26and clasped his hands
00:34:27there was a
00:34:29treasure ship
00:34:30that sank
00:34:31not more than
00:34:32forty hours from here
00:34:33he said
00:34:33but come to think of it
00:34:35the duke
00:34:35which has ransacked
00:34:36the ship
00:34:37and stole the jewels
00:34:38so much
00:34:39sighed Zorn
00:34:40for that
00:34:41the gollocks thought again
00:34:42if there were hail
00:34:46he said
00:34:46we could stain
00:34:47the hail
00:34:48with blood
00:34:48it might turn
00:34:49into rubies
00:34:50there is no hail
00:34:52said Zorn
00:34:53the gollocks sighed
00:34:55so much
00:34:56he said
00:34:56for that
00:34:58the task is hard
00:35:00said Zorn
00:35:01and can't be done
00:35:02I can do a score
00:35:04of things
00:35:04that can't be done
00:35:05the gollocks said
00:35:06I can find a thing
00:35:08I cannot see
00:35:09and see a thing
00:35:09I cannot find
00:35:11the first is time
00:35:13the second is a spot
00:35:14before my eyes
00:35:15I can feel a thing
00:35:16I cannot touch
00:35:17and touch a thing
00:35:17I cannot feel
00:35:19the first is sad
00:35:21and sorry
00:35:21the second is your heart
00:35:23what would you do
00:35:25without me
00:35:26say nothing
00:35:27nothing
00:35:28said the prince
00:35:29good
00:35:29good
00:35:30then you're helpless
00:35:31and I'll help you
00:35:32I said I had
00:35:33another plan than one
00:35:35and I've just remembered
00:35:35what it is
00:35:36there is a woman
00:35:38on this aisle
00:35:39who'd have some
00:35:40eight and eighty years
00:35:41and she is gifted
00:35:42with the strangest
00:35:44gift of all
00:35:45when she weeps
00:35:46what do you think
00:35:47she weeps
00:35:48tears
00:35:49said Zorn
00:35:50jewels
00:35:52said the gollocks
00:35:53the prince stared at him
00:35:54but that is too remarkable
00:35:56to be
00:35:57he said
00:35:57I don't see why
00:35:59the gollocks said
00:36:00even the lowly oyster
00:36:02makes his pearls
00:36:02without the use of eyes
00:36:03or hands
00:36:04or any tools
00:36:05and pearls
00:36:06are jewels
00:36:07the oyster
00:36:08is a blob of glup
00:36:09but a woman
00:36:10is a
00:36:11a
00:36:13a woman
00:36:14the prince thought
00:36:15of the toadal
00:36:16and felt a small
00:36:18cold feeling
00:36:19in his guggle
00:36:20where does this
00:36:22wondrous woman dwell
00:36:23he asked
00:36:24the old man groaned
00:36:27over mountain
00:36:28over stream
00:36:29by the way of storm
00:36:30and thunder
00:36:31in a hut so high
00:36:33or deep
00:36:34I never can remember
00:36:35which
00:36:36the naked eye
00:36:37can't see it
00:36:38hmm
00:36:39he stood up
00:36:40we must be on our way
00:36:41he said
00:36:42it'll take us
00:36:43ninety hours
00:36:43or more
00:36:44or less
00:36:45to go
00:36:46and come
00:36:47it's this way
00:36:48or it's that way
00:36:50make up my mind
00:36:51how can I
00:36:52asked the prince
00:36:53you have a rose
00:36:55the gollocks said
00:36:56hold it in your hand
00:36:57the prince took out
00:36:59the rose
00:36:59and held it in his hand
00:37:01and its stem
00:37:02slowly turned
00:37:03and stopped
00:37:04yeah
00:37:05oh
00:37:05it's this way
00:37:06cried the gollocks
00:37:07and they started off
00:37:08in the direction
00:37:09the stem of the rose
00:37:10had pointed out
00:37:11I will tell you
00:37:13the tale of
00:37:14haggar
00:37:15said the gollocks
00:37:16when haggar
00:37:18was eleven
00:37:20he began
00:37:21and picking cherries
00:37:22in the wood
00:37:23one day
00:37:24and asphodel
00:37:25she came upon
00:37:26the good king
00:37:27gwain of yarrow
00:37:28with his foot
00:37:29caught in a wolf
00:37:30trap
00:37:31weep for me maiden
00:37:32said the king
00:37:33for I am ludicrous
00:37:34and laughable
00:37:35with my foot
00:37:36caught in this trap
00:37:37I am no longer
00:37:38irked
00:37:39for I have lost
00:37:40my ursia
00:37:41by twiddling
00:37:42my fingers
00:37:43or clapping
00:37:43my hands
00:37:44I have often
00:37:45changed the fate
00:37:46of men
00:37:46but now I cannot
00:37:47get my foot
00:37:48loose from this thing
00:37:49I have no time
00:37:51for tears
00:37:51the maiden said
00:37:52she knew
00:37:53the secret
00:37:54of the trap
00:37:54and was about
00:37:55to free
00:37:55the fettered foot
00:37:56when the farmer
00:37:57from a nearby farm
00:37:58began to laugh
00:37:58the king
00:38:00beshrewed him
00:38:01and his wife
00:38:02and turned them
00:38:03into grasshoppers
00:38:04creatures that look
00:38:05as if their feet
00:38:06are caught in traps
00:38:07even when they aren't
00:38:08lo the maid
00:38:10has freed my foot
00:38:11the king exulted
00:38:12seeing that she had
00:38:13but it is numb
00:38:15and feels like
00:38:16someone else's foot
00:38:17not mine
00:38:17the maiden
00:38:19took off his shoe
00:38:19and rubbed his foot
00:38:20until it felt like his
00:38:22and he had put it down
00:38:23and for her kindness
00:38:25the grateful king
00:38:26gave her the power
00:38:27to weep jewels
00:38:28when she wept
00:38:28instead of tears
00:38:30when the people
00:38:31learned of the strange
00:38:32gift the king
00:38:33had given Hagar
00:38:34they came from leagues
00:38:35around by day and night
00:38:36in warm and winter weather
00:38:38to make her sad
00:38:39and sorry
00:38:40nothing tragic happened
00:38:42but she heard of it
00:38:43and wept
00:38:44people came with heavy hearts
00:38:46and left with pearls
00:38:47and rubies
00:38:48paths were paved
00:38:49with pearls
00:38:50and rivers ran
00:38:51with rubies
00:38:51children played
00:38:53with sapphires
00:38:54in the street
00:38:54and dogs chewed opals
00:38:56every peacock
00:38:57had at least
00:38:58nine diamonds
00:38:59in its gizzard
00:39:00and one
00:39:01cut open
00:39:02on St. Wistow's day
00:39:03had thirty-eight
00:39:06the price of stones
00:39:09and pebbles rose
00:39:10the price of gems
00:39:11declined
00:39:12until for making
00:39:13Hagar weep
00:39:14you could be hanged
00:39:15and fined
00:39:16in the end
00:39:17the jewels were melted
00:39:18in a frightful fire
00:39:19by order of the king
00:39:21I will make her
00:39:22weep myself
00:39:23one day each year
00:39:25the king decreed
00:39:26and thus and hence
00:39:27the flow of gems
00:39:29will make some sense
00:39:30and have some point
00:39:32and balance
00:39:33but alas
00:39:35and but alack
00:39:36the maid could weep
00:39:38no more
00:39:39at any tale
00:39:39of tragedy
00:39:40or tribulation
00:39:41damsels killed
00:39:43by dragons
00:39:43left her cold
00:39:44and broken hearts
00:39:45and children lost
00:39:46and love denied
00:39:47she never wept
00:39:48by day or night
00:39:49in warm
00:39:50or winter weather
00:39:51she grew to be
00:39:52sixteen and twenty-six
00:39:53and thirty-four
00:39:54and forty-eight
00:39:55and fifty-two
00:39:56and now she waits
00:39:57at eighty-eight
00:39:58for me
00:39:58and you
00:40:00I hope
00:40:01the Golic said
00:40:02that this is true
00:40:03I make things up
00:40:05you know
00:40:06the young prince
00:40:07sighed and said
00:40:08I know you do
00:40:10if Hagar weeps
00:40:11no more
00:40:12why should she
00:40:13weep for you
00:40:14the Golic
00:40:15thought it over
00:40:16I feel that she is
00:40:18frail and fragile
00:40:19I trust that she is
00:40:22sad and sorry
00:40:23I hope that she is
00:40:25neither dead
00:40:26nor dying
00:40:27I'll think of something
00:40:28very sad to tell her
00:40:30very sad and lonely
00:40:31take out your rose
00:40:34I think we're lost
00:40:35they had become
00:40:36tangled in brambles
00:40:37by now
00:40:38and the trees of the forest
00:40:39they had entered
00:40:39were tall and thick
00:40:40thorns began to tear
00:40:42the prince's raiment
00:40:43lightning flashed
00:40:44and thunder rolled
00:40:45and all the paths
00:40:46vanished
00:40:47the prince took out
00:40:48the rose
00:40:49and held it in his hand
00:40:50the stem began
00:40:51to turn and twist
00:40:53and pointed
00:40:54ah
00:40:56around this way
00:40:57the Golic said
00:40:58it's lighter here
00:40:59he found a narrow path
00:41:00that led straight onwards
00:41:01as they walked
00:41:02along the path
00:41:03the Golic's leading
00:41:04they met
00:41:05a jack-a-dandy
00:41:06whose clothes
00:41:07were torn
00:41:08and tattered
00:41:09I told my tale
00:41:11to Hagar
00:41:12said the man
00:41:13but Hagar
00:41:14weeps no more
00:41:15I told her tales
00:41:16of lovers
00:41:17lost in April
00:41:18I told her tales
00:41:19of maidens
00:41:19dead in June
00:41:20I told her tales
00:41:22of princes
00:41:23fed geese
00:41:24I even told her
00:41:25how I lost
00:41:26my youngest niece
00:41:28this is sad
00:41:30the Golic said
00:41:30and getting
00:41:31sadder
00:41:32the way is long
00:41:33the torn man said
00:41:35and getting longer
00:41:36the road goes uphill
00:41:38all the way
00:41:39and even farther
00:41:40I wish you luck
00:41:41he said
00:41:42you will need it
00:41:43he disappeared
00:41:44he disappeared
00:41:44in brambles
00:41:45the only light
00:41:47in the forest
00:41:48came from lightning
00:41:49and when it flashed
00:41:50they watched the rose
00:41:51and followed
00:41:52where it pointed
00:41:53this brought them
00:41:54on the second day
00:41:55into a valley
00:41:56they saw a jack-a-lent
00:41:57approaching
00:41:58his clothes
00:41:59all torn
00:41:59and tattered
00:42:00I told my tale
00:42:02to Hagar
00:42:03said the man
00:42:04but Hagar
00:42:05weeps no more
00:42:06I told her tales
00:42:08of lovers
00:42:08lost at sea
00:42:09and drowned
00:42:10in phantoms
00:42:11I told her tales
00:42:13of babies
00:42:13lost in woods
00:42:14and lost on mountains
00:42:16she wept not
00:42:17said the jack-a-lent
00:42:18the way is dark
00:42:19and getting darker
00:42:20the hut is high
00:42:21and even higher
00:42:22I wish you luck
00:42:24there is none
00:42:25he vanished
00:42:26in the briars
00:42:27the brambles
00:42:29and the thorns
00:42:29grew thick and thicker
00:42:30in a ticking thicket
00:42:32of bickering crickets
00:42:33farther along
00:42:34and stronger
00:42:34bonged the gongs
00:42:35a throng of frogs
00:42:37green and vivid
00:42:38on their lily pads
00:42:39from the sky
00:42:40came the crying
00:42:41of flies
00:42:41and the pilgrims
00:42:42leaping over
00:42:43a bleating sheep
00:42:44creeping knee-deep
00:42:45in a sleepy stream
00:42:46in which swift
00:42:47and slippery snakes
00:42:48slid and slithered
00:42:49silkily
00:42:50whispering sinful secrets
00:42:52a comet
00:42:53whistled through the sky
00:42:54and by its light
00:42:55they saw the hut
00:42:56of Hagar high
00:42:57on Hagar's hill
00:42:58if she's dead
00:43:00there may be
00:43:00strangers here
00:43:01the gollocks said
00:43:03how many hours
00:43:04do we have left
00:43:05the prince demanded
00:43:05if we can make her
00:43:07weep within the hour
00:43:08the gollocks said
00:43:09we'll
00:43:10oh we'll barely make it
00:43:11I hope she's alive
00:43:13and sad
00:43:14said Zorn
00:43:14I feel that she has died
00:43:16the gollocks said
00:43:17I feel it in my stomach
00:43:19you better carry me
00:43:22I'm
00:43:22I'm weary
00:43:23Zorn of Zorn
00:43:25picked the gollocks up
00:43:26and carried him
00:43:27it was cold
00:43:32on Hagar's hill
00:43:33and fresh with furrows
00:43:34where the dragging
00:43:35points of stars
00:43:36had ploughed the fields
00:43:37a peasant in a purple smock
00:43:40stalked the smoking furrows
00:43:42sowing seeds
00:43:43there was a smell
00:43:44the gollocks thought
00:43:45a little like
00:43:46forever in the air
00:43:47but mixed with something
00:43:49faint and less enduring
00:43:50possibly the fragrance
00:43:51of a flower
00:43:52there's no light
00:43:54in her window
00:43:55the gollocks said
00:43:55and it's dark
00:43:56and getting darker
00:43:58there's no smoke
00:43:59in her chimney
00:44:00said the prince
00:44:00and it's cold
00:44:01and getting colder
00:44:02the gollocks barely breathed
00:44:04and said
00:44:05what worries me
00:44:07the most
00:44:07is that spider's web
00:44:09there on the door
00:44:10that stretches
00:44:11from the hinges
00:44:12to the latch
00:44:13the young prince
00:44:14felt a hollow feeling
00:44:16in his zatch
00:44:16knock on
00:44:18the door
00:44:19the gollocks said
00:44:20his voice so high
00:44:21it quavered
00:44:22he crossed his fingers
00:44:23and kept them crossed
00:44:24and Zorn
00:44:25knocked on the door
00:44:26no one answered
00:44:28knock again
00:44:30the gollocks cried
00:44:31and prince Zorn
00:44:33knocked again
00:44:34Hagar was there
00:44:37she came to the door
00:44:38and stared at them
00:44:39a woman neither dead
00:44:41nor dying
00:44:42and clearly only
00:44:43thirty-eight
00:44:44or thirty-nine
00:44:45the gollocks had missed
00:44:47her age by fifty years
00:44:48as old men
00:44:49often do
00:44:50weep for us
00:44:52the gollocks cried
00:44:53or else this prince
00:44:55will never wid
00:44:56his princess
00:44:56I have no tears
00:44:59said Hagar
00:45:00once I wept
00:45:01when ships were overdue
00:45:02or brooks ran dry
00:45:03or tangerines
00:45:04were overripe
00:45:05or sheep
00:45:07got something
00:45:07in their eye
00:45:08I weep
00:45:09no more
00:45:10said Hagar
00:45:11her eyes were dry
00:45:13as deserts
00:45:13and her mouth
00:45:14seemed made of stone
00:45:15I have turned
00:45:17a thousand persons
00:45:18gemless
00:45:18from my door
00:45:19come in
00:45:21she said
00:45:21I weep
00:45:22no more
00:45:23the room was dark
00:45:25and held a table
00:45:26and a chair
00:45:27and in one corner
00:45:28something like a chest
00:45:29made of oak
00:45:29and bound with brass
00:45:30the gollocks smiled
00:45:32and then looked sad
00:45:33and said
00:45:33I have tails
00:45:35to make a hangman
00:45:36weep
00:45:36and tails
00:45:37to bring a tear
00:45:38of sorrow
00:45:38to a monster's eye
00:45:39I have tails
00:45:41that would disturb
00:45:42a dragon's sleep
00:45:43and even make
00:45:44the toadal
00:45:45sigh
00:45:46at the mention
00:45:47of the toadal
00:45:48Hagar's hair
00:45:49turned grey
00:45:50once I wept
00:45:52when maids
00:45:53were married
00:45:53underneath the
00:45:54April moon
00:45:55I weep
00:45:55no more
00:45:56when maids
00:45:56are buried
00:45:57even in the
00:45:58month of June
00:45:59you have the
00:46:00emotions
00:46:01of the fish
00:46:01said the gollocks
00:46:02irritably
00:46:03he sat on the floor
00:46:04and told her
00:46:05tales of the death
00:46:06of kings
00:46:06and kindred things
00:46:07and little children
00:46:09choked by rings
00:46:10I have no tears
00:46:13said Hagar
00:46:14he told her tales
00:46:16of the frogs
00:46:16in the forum
00:46:17and the toads
00:46:18in the rice
00:46:19that destroyed
00:46:19the poppy coccalorum
00:46:20and the cocahooper trees
00:46:22I weep
00:46:24no more
00:46:25said Hagar
00:46:26look
00:46:28the gollocks
00:46:28said
00:46:28and listen
00:46:30the princess
00:46:31Sarah Linda
00:46:32will never
00:46:33wed this youth
00:46:33until the day
00:46:34he lays a thousand
00:46:35jewels upon
00:46:36a
00:46:37certain
00:46:38table
00:46:39I would weep
00:46:41for Sarah Linda
00:46:42Hagar
00:46:42sighed
00:46:43if
00:46:43I
00:46:44were able
00:46:45the prince
00:46:47had wandered
00:46:47to the oaken chest
00:46:48he seized its cover
00:46:50with his hand
00:46:51and threw it open
00:46:51a radiance
00:46:52filled the room
00:46:53and lit the darkest
00:46:54corners
00:46:54inside the chest
00:46:56there were at least
00:46:56ten thousand jewels
00:46:57of the very sort
00:46:58and kind
00:46:59the duke demanded
00:47:00diamonds flared
00:47:01and rubies glowed
00:47:02and sapphires burned
00:47:03and emeralds
00:47:04seemed on fire
00:47:05they looked at Hagar
00:47:07these are
00:47:09jewels of laughter
00:47:10Hagar said
00:47:11I woke up
00:47:12fourteen days ago
00:47:13to find them
00:47:14on my bed
00:47:14I had laughed
00:47:15until I wept
00:47:16at something
00:47:16in my sleep
00:47:17the gollocks
00:47:19grabbed a gleaming
00:47:20handful of the gems
00:47:21and then another
00:47:22crowing with delight
00:47:23put them back
00:47:25said Hagar
00:47:26for there's a thing
00:47:27that you must know
00:47:28concerning jewels
00:47:29of laughter
00:47:30they always turn
00:47:31again to tears
00:47:32a fortnight
00:47:33after
00:47:34it has been
00:47:35a fortnight
00:47:36to the day
00:47:36and the minute
00:47:37since I took
00:47:38the prettiest
00:47:38to this chest
00:47:39and put them
00:47:40in it
00:47:41even as they
00:47:43watched
00:47:43the light
00:47:44and colour
00:47:45died
00:47:45the diamonds
00:47:47dimmed
00:47:48the emeralds
00:47:48went out
00:47:49and the jewels
00:47:50of Hagar's
00:47:51laughter
00:47:51turned to tears
00:47:52with a little
00:47:53sound
00:47:54like sighing
00:47:55there was nothing
00:47:56in the chest
00:47:57but limpid liquid
00:47:58leering up
00:47:59at them
00:47:59and winking
00:47:59you must think
00:48:02the gollocks
00:48:02cried
00:48:03you must think
00:48:04of what you
00:48:04laughed at
00:48:05in your sleep
00:48:06Hagar's eyes
00:48:07were blank
00:48:08I do not know
00:48:09for this was
00:48:10fourteen days ago
00:48:12think
00:48:13the gollocks
00:48:14said
00:48:14think
00:48:15said
00:48:15Zorn of Zorna
00:48:16Hagar frowned
00:48:18and said
00:48:18oh
00:48:20I never can
00:48:21remember dreams
00:48:22the gollocks
00:48:23clasped his hands
00:48:24behind his back
00:48:25and thought it over
00:48:26as I remember
00:48:28and recall
00:48:29he said
00:48:29the jewels
00:48:30of sorrow
00:48:31last forever
00:48:31such was the gift
00:48:33and power
00:48:33the good Gwain
00:48:34gave you
00:48:35what was he doing
00:48:36by the way
00:48:37so many leagues
00:48:38from Yarrow
00:48:39hunting
00:48:40Hagar said
00:48:41wolves
00:48:41as I recall it
00:48:42the gollocks
00:48:43sculled
00:48:44I'm a man
00:48:45of logic
00:48:46in my way
00:48:48what happened
00:48:49on that awful day
00:48:50to make him
00:48:51value sorrow
00:48:52over and above
00:48:53the gifts of laughter
00:48:54why have these jewels
00:48:55turned to tears
00:48:57a fortnight
00:48:58after
00:48:59oh
00:49:00there was a farmer
00:49:02from a nearby farm
00:49:03who laughed
00:49:04said Hagar
00:49:05on second thought
00:49:07the good king
00:49:07said
00:49:08I will amend
00:49:09and modify
00:49:09the gift
00:49:10I gave you
00:49:11the jewels
00:49:12of sorrow
00:49:12will last
00:49:13beyond all measure
00:49:14but may the jewels
00:49:15of laughter
00:49:15give you
00:49:16little pleasure
00:49:18the gollocks
00:49:20groaned
00:49:21if there's one thing
00:49:23in the world
00:49:24I hate
00:49:25he said
00:49:25it is amendments
00:49:27his eyes
00:49:28turned bright
00:49:29and bright
00:49:29and he clapped
00:49:30his hands
00:49:30I'll make a laugh
00:49:31until she weeps
00:49:32he said
00:49:33the gollocks
00:49:34told her funny tales
00:49:35of things that were
00:49:36and had been
00:49:37but Hagar's eyes
00:49:38were dry as quartz
00:49:39and her mouth
00:49:40seemed made of
00:49:41egget
00:49:42I laugh at nothing
00:49:45that has been
00:49:46she said
00:49:46or is
00:49:48the gollocks
00:49:49smiled
00:49:50then we will
00:49:52think of things
00:49:53that will be
00:49:54and aren't now
00:49:55and never where
00:49:56I'll think
00:49:57of something
00:49:58and he thought
00:49:59and thought
00:50:00of something
00:50:01a deehoy
00:50:03who was terribly
00:50:04hobble
00:50:05cast only stones
00:50:06that were
00:50:07cobble
00:50:08and bats
00:50:08that were ding
00:50:09from a shot
00:50:10that was sling
00:50:11but never hit
00:50:12inks
00:50:12that were bobble
00:50:13Hagar laughed
00:50:15until she wept
00:50:16and seven
00:50:17moonstones
00:50:18trickled down
00:50:19her cheeks
00:50:19and clattered
00:50:20on the floor
00:50:20oh she's weeping
00:50:22semi-precious
00:50:23stones
00:50:24the gollock
00:50:24wailed
00:50:25he tried again
00:50:27there was an old
00:50:28coddle so molly
00:50:29he talked in a
00:50:30glot that was
00:50:31poly
00:50:31his gauze
00:50:33was so goo
00:50:34that his lips
00:50:34became goo
00:50:36and he ate
00:50:37only pops
00:50:37that were lolly
00:50:38Hagar laughed
00:50:40until she wept
00:50:41and seven
00:50:41brilliants
00:50:42trickled down
00:50:43her cheeks
00:50:43and clattered
00:50:44on the floor
00:50:44rhinestones
00:50:46groaned the gollocks
00:50:47now she's weeping
00:50:49costume jewellery
00:50:50the young prince
00:50:52tried his hand
00:50:52at telling tales
00:50:53of laughter
00:50:54but for his pains
00:50:55he got a shower
00:50:56of tourmaline
00:50:57a cat's eye
00:50:58and a flux
00:50:59of pearls
00:51:00oh the duke
00:51:01hates pearls
00:51:02the gollocks
00:51:02moaned
00:51:03he thinks
00:51:04they're made
00:51:04by fish
00:51:05it grew darker
00:51:07in the room
00:51:08and they could
00:51:09scarcely see
00:51:10the starlight
00:51:10and the moon
00:51:11were gone
00:51:12they stood there
00:51:13still as statues
00:51:14the gollocks
00:51:14cleared his throat
00:51:15the prince
00:51:16uncrossed his arms
00:51:17and crossed them
00:51:18and then without
00:51:19a rhyme or reason
00:51:20out of time
00:51:20and out of season
00:51:21haggar laughed
00:51:23and kept on laughing
00:51:25no one had said a word
00:51:27no one had told a tale
00:51:29it might have been
00:51:29the hooting of an owl
00:51:30it might have been
00:51:31the crawling of a snail
00:51:33but haggar laughed
00:51:34and kept on laughing
00:51:35and precious jewels
00:51:36twinkled down her cheeks
00:51:37and sparkled on the floor
00:51:38until the hut
00:51:39was ankle deep
00:51:40in diamonds
00:51:41and rubies
00:51:42the gollocks
00:51:44counted out a thousand
00:51:45and put them
00:51:45in a velvet sack
00:51:46that he had brought along
00:51:47oh
00:51:48I wish
00:51:50that she had laughed
00:51:51he sighed
00:51:52at something
00:51:52that I had said
00:51:54Zorn of Zorn
00:51:55took her hand
00:51:56God keep you warm
00:51:58in winter
00:51:58said the prince
00:51:59and cool
00:52:00in summer
00:52:00farewell
00:52:01the gollocks said
00:52:02and oh yes
00:52:04thank you
00:52:04haggar laughed
00:52:06and kept on laughing
00:52:07and sapphires
00:52:08burned upon the floor
00:52:09and lit the gollocks
00:52:10towards the door
00:52:11how many hours
00:52:13are left us now
00:52:14the young prince cried
00:52:15it's odd
00:52:16the gollocks muttered
00:52:17to himself
00:52:18I could have sworn
00:52:19that she had died
00:52:20this is the only time
00:52:22my stomach ever lied
00:52:24how many hours
00:52:26are left us now
00:52:27the prince implored
00:52:28haggar sat upon the chest
00:52:30and kept on laughing
00:52:31I should say
00:52:33the gollocks said
00:52:34that we have only 40 left
00:52:35but it's downhill
00:52:37all the way
00:52:38they went out
00:52:39into the moonless night
00:52:40and peered about them
00:52:41in the dark
00:52:42I think it's this way
00:52:43the gollocks said
00:52:44and they went the way
00:52:45he thought it was
00:52:46what about the clocks
00:52:48demanded Zorn
00:52:49the gollocks exhaled
00:52:51a sorry breath
00:52:52that's another problem
00:52:54for another hour
00:52:55he said
00:52:56inside the hut
00:52:58something red
00:52:59and larger than a ruby
00:53:00glowed among the jewels
00:53:01and haggar picked it up
00:53:03a rose
00:53:05she said
00:53:06they must have dropped it
00:53:08in the black oak room
00:53:12the yellow torches
00:53:13flared and crackled
00:53:14on the walls
00:53:14and their fire
00:53:15burned on the lances
00:53:16and the shields
00:53:17the duke's gloves
00:53:19glittered
00:53:20how goes the night
00:53:22he gnarled
00:53:23the moon is down
00:53:25said Hark
00:53:25I have not heard
00:53:26the clocks
00:53:27you'll never hear them
00:53:29screamed the duke
00:53:30I slew time
00:53:31in this castle
00:53:32many a cold

01:06:31and in the walls
01:06:32the cold duke moaned
01:06:34I hear the sound of time
01:06:36and yet I slow it
01:06:38and wipe my bloody sword
01:06:40upon its beard

01:07:39down the dark
01:07:39and secret stairs
01:07:40I slew time
01:07:42with a bloody hand
01:07:43that grips your arm
01:07:44and time is greater
01:07:45far than Zorn
01:07:47of Zorn
01:07:47Hark began to chew again
01:07:49no mortal man

01:07:52he said
01:07:52and even if he could
01:07:54there's something else
01:07:55a clockwork
01:07:55in a maiden's heart
01:07:56that strikes the hours
01:07:58of youth and love
01:07:59and knows the southward

01:08:17on my sleeves
01:08:18the old brown stains
01:08:19of seconds
01:08:20where they bled
01:08:22and died
01:08:23I slew time
01:08:24in these gloomy halls
01:08:26and wiped
01:08:27my bloody blade
01:08:28oh shut up
01:08:29said Hark
01:08:30you're the most

01:08:33to tell you that
01:08:33I said it
01:08:34and I'm glad
01:08:34silence
01:08:36roared the duke
01:08:37where are we
01:08:39they stumbled
01:08:40down the secret stairs
01:08:42this is the hidden door
01:08:45said Hark
01:08:45that leads
01:08:46into the oak room

01:08:50his sword gripped
01:08:50in his hand
01:08:51Hark groped
01:08:53and found
01:08:53the secret knob
01:08:55the black oak room
01:09:00was bright
01:09:00with flaming
01:09:01tortures
01:09:02but brighter
01:09:02with the light
01:09:03of Sarah Linda
01:09:04the cold eye
01:09:06of the duke
01:09:06was dazzled
01:09:07by the gleaming
01:09:07of a thousand jewels
01:09:08that sparkled
01:09:09on the table
01:09:10his ears were filled
01:09:11with chiming
01:09:12as the clocks
01:09:13began to strike
01:09:14one
01:09:15said Hark
01:09:16two
01:09:16cried Zorn of Zorna
01:09:18three
01:09:19the duke's voice
01:09:20almost whispered
01:09:22four
01:09:22sighed Sarah Linda
01:09:23five
01:09:25five
01:09:26the gollocks crowed
01:09:27and pointed at the table
01:09:28the task is done
01:09:30the terms are met
01:09:31he said
01:09:32the duke's cold eyes
01:09:33slowly moved around the room
01:09:35where are my guards
01:09:37he croaked
01:09:37and where is Krang
01:09:39the greatest
01:09:40of them all
01:09:41I lured them
01:09:43to the tower
01:09:44said Zorn
01:09:44and locked them in
01:09:45the one that's tied
01:09:47in knots

01:09:49the duke glared
01:09:51at the jewels
01:09:51on the table
01:09:52they're false
01:09:54he said
01:09:54they must be

01:09:57he picked one up
01:09:58and saw that it was real
01:09:59and put it down again
01:10:00the task is done
01:10:02said Hark
01:10:03the terms are met

01:10:13Sarah Linda
01:10:14on the morrow
01:10:15the figures in the room
01:10:17were still
01:10:18and he could hear
01:10:19their breathing
01:10:20what a gruesome way
01:10:22to treat one's niece
01:10:23the gollocks cried
01:10:25she's not my niece
01:10:27the lame man sneered
01:10:28I stole her from a king
01:10:30he showed his lower teeth
01:10:32we all have flaws
01:10:34he said
01:10:34and mine is being wicked
01:10:36he sat down at the table
01:10:38and began to count the gems
01:10:39who is my father then
01:10:41the princess cried
01:10:42the spy's black eyebrows rose
01:10:45I thought the gollocks told you
01:10:47but then of course
01:10:48he never could remember things
01:10:49especially
01:10:50the gollocks said

01:11:03he turned to Sarah Linda
01:11:04then the gift
01:11:05your father gave to Hagar
01:11:07has operated in the end
01:11:09to make you
01:11:10make you happy
01:11:12the duke looked up
01:11:13and bared his teeth
01:11:14the tale is much
01:11:16too tidy
01:11:16for my taste
