This is an audio recording of James Thurber's classic fantasy tale THE 13 CLOCKS, read by the Academy/Emmy/Olivier/Grammy Award-winning actor/writer/director Peter Ustinov.  On a lonely hill, in a gloomy castle in which 13 clocks have all frozen at the same time, lives a cold, aggressive Duke and his niece the beautiful Princess Saralinda.  Many princes have come to woo her, but none have been able to complete the impossible tasks set them by the Duke ... so far, because a new prince, disguised as a minstrel, has come. However, it is doubtful whether even he can complete the Duke's latest task and win the Princess' hand ... not without the help of the mysterious (yet sometimes forgetful) Golux. Will this unlikely duo complete the Duke's task within the assigned time limit ... or will this prince become the latest to fall before the Duke's sword and be fed to the geese like so many before him?

00:00:00Once upon a time, in a gloomy castle on a lonely hill, where there were thirteen clocks that wouldn't go,

00:00:07there lived a cold, aggressive duke and his niece, the Princess Saralinda.

00:00:12She was warm in every wind and weather, but he was always cold.

00:00:18His hands were as cold as his smile and almost as cold as his heart.

00:00:23He wore gloves when he was asleep, and he wore gloves when he was awake,

00:00:26which made it difficult for him to pick up pins or coins or the kernels of nuts or to tear the wings from nightingales.

00:00:34He was six foot four and forty-six, and even colder than he thought he was.

00:00:41One eye wore a velvet patch, the other glittered through a monocle,

00:00:45which made half his body seem closer to you than the other half.

00:00:49He had lost one eye when he was twelve,

00:00:51for he was fond of peering into nests and lairs in search of birds and animals to maul.

00:00:57One afternoon, a mother shrike had mauled him first.

00:01:01His nights were spent in evil dreams, and his days were given to wicked schemes.

00:01:09Wickedly scheming, he would limp and cackle through the cold corridors of the castle,

00:01:14planning new impossible feats for the suitors of Saralinda to perform.

00:01:18He did not wish to give her hand in marriage, since her hand was the only warm hand in the castle.

00:01:23Even the hands of his watch and the hands of all the thirteen clocks were frozen.

00:01:27They had all frozen at the same time on a snowy night seven years before,

00:01:31and after that it was always ten minutes to five in the castle.

00:01:37Travellers and mariners would look up at the gloomy castle on the lonely hill and say,

00:01:41time lies frozen there, it's always then, it's never now.

00:01:49The cold duke was afraid of now, for now has warmth and urgency and then is dead and buried.

00:01:57Now might bring a certain night of gay and shining courage,

00:02:01But no, the cold duke muttered, the prince will break himself against a new and awful labour,

00:02:08a place too high to reach, a thing too far to find, a burden too heavy to lift.

00:02:15The duke was afraid of now, but he tampered with the clocks to see if they would go,

00:02:20out of a strange perversity, praying that they wouldn't.

00:02:24Tinkers and tinkerers and a few wizards who happened by tried to start the clocks

00:02:29with tools or magic words or by shaking them and cursing, but nothing word or ticked.

00:02:35The clocks were dead, and in the end, brooding on it,

00:02:38the duke decided that he had murdered time,

00:02:40slain it with his sword and wiped his bloody blade upon its beard

00:02:44and left it lying there bleeding hours and minutes,

00:02:47its springs uncoiled and sprawling, its pendulum disintegrating.

00:02:54The duke limped because his legs were of different lengths.

00:02:59The right one had outgrown the left because, when he was young,

00:03:02he had spent his mornings place-kicking pups and punting kittens.

00:03:07He would say to a suitor,

00:03:08What is the difference in the length of my legs?

00:03:12And if the youth replied,

00:03:13Why, one is shorter than the other,

00:03:15the duke would run him through the sword he carried in his sword-cane

00:03:20and feed him to the geese.

00:03:22The suitor was supposed to say,

00:03:26Why, one is longer than the other.

00:03:31Many a prince had been run through for naming the wrong difference.

00:03:34Others had been slain for offences equally trivial,

00:03:38tramping the duke's camellias,

00:03:39failing to praise his wines,

00:03:41staring too long at his gloves,

00:03:43gazing too long at his niece.

00:03:46Those who survived his scorn and sword

00:03:49were given incredible labours to perform

00:03:52in order to win his niece's hand,

00:03:54the only warm hand in the castle

00:03:56where time had frozen to death

00:03:57at ten minutes to five one snowy night.

00:04:01They were told to cut a slice of moon

00:04:03or change the ocean into wine.

00:04:06They were set to finding things that never were

00:04:08and building things that could not be.

00:04:09They came and tried and failed and disappeared

00:04:12and never came again.

00:04:15And some, as I have said, were slain

00:04:17for using names that start with X

00:04:19or dropping spoons or wearing rings

00:04:21or speaking disrespectfully of sin.

00:04:28The castle and the duke grew colder

00:04:30and Sarah Linda, as a princess will,

00:04:33even in a place where time lies frozen,

00:04:36became a little older,

00:04:37but only a little older.

00:04:40She was nearly twenty-one

00:04:41the day a prince, disguised as a minstrel,

00:04:43came singing to the town

00:04:45that lay below the castle.

00:04:46He called himself Xingu,

00:04:49which was not his name and dangerous

00:04:51since the name began with X

00:04:52and still does.

00:04:55He was, quite properly,

00:04:56a thing of shreds and patches,

00:04:58a ragged minstrel singing for pennies

00:05:01and the love of singing.

00:05:03Xingu, as he so rashly called himself,

00:05:06was the youngest son of a powerful king,

00:05:09but he had grown weary of rich attire

00:05:11and banquets and tournaments

00:05:12and the available princesses of his own realm

00:05:15and yearned to find in a far land

00:05:18the maiden of his dreams,

00:05:20singing as he went,

00:05:22learning the life of the lowly

00:05:24and possibly slaying a dragon

00:05:27here and there.

00:05:28At the sign of the silver swan

00:05:32in the town below the castle

00:05:33where taverners, travellers,

00:05:35tale-tellers,

00:05:36tosspots, troublemakers

00:05:37and other townspeople were gathered,

00:05:39he heard of Saralinda,

00:05:42loveliest princess

00:05:43on all the thousand islands

00:05:44of the ocean seas.

00:05:46If you can turn the rain to silver,

00:05:49she is yours,

00:05:51a taverner leered.

00:05:53If you can slay the thorny boar of Borythorn,

00:05:57she is yours,

00:05:58grinned a traveller,

00:05:59but there is no thorny boar of Borythorn,

00:06:02which makes it hard.

00:06:05What makes it even harder

00:06:07is her uncle's scorn and sword,

00:06:09sneered a tale-teller.

00:06:11He will slit you from your guddle to your zatch?

00:06:14Ah, the duke is seven feet nine inches tall

00:06:18and only twenty-eight years old,

00:06:20or in his prime,

00:06:22a tosspot gurgled.

00:06:24His hand is cold enough to stop a clock

00:06:26and strong enough to choke a ball

00:06:28and swift enough to catch the wind.

00:06:30He breaks up minstrels in his soup

00:06:32like crackers.

00:06:35Our minstrel here will warm

00:06:37the old man's heart with song,

00:06:39dazzle him with jewels and gold,

00:06:42a troublemaker simpered.

00:06:44He'll trample on the duke's camellia,

00:06:46spill his wine,

00:06:47and blunt his sword

00:06:49and say his name begins with X,

00:06:51and in the end the duke will say,

00:06:53Take Saralinda with my blessing,

00:06:56O lordly prince of rags and tags,

00:06:58O rider of the sun!

00:07:01The troublemaker weighed eighteen stone,

00:07:03but the minstrel picked him up

00:07:05and tossed him in the air

00:07:06and caught him and set him down again.

00:07:08Then he paid his due

00:07:09and left the swan.

00:07:12I've seen that youth before,

00:07:14the traveller mews,

00:07:16staring after Xingu.

00:07:17But he was neither ragamuffin then

00:07:20nor minstrel.

00:07:22Now let me see,

00:07:24where was it?

00:07:25In his soup,

00:07:27the toss-pot said,

00:07:28like crackers.

00:07:34Outside the tavern that night

00:07:35was lighted by a rocking yellow moon

00:07:37that held a white star in its horn.

00:07:40In the gloomy castle on the hill

00:07:42a lantern gleamed and darkened,

00:07:44came and went,

00:07:45as if the gaunt duke stalked from room to room,

00:07:48stabbing bats and spiders,

00:07:50killing mice.

00:07:51Dazzle the duke with jewels,

00:07:54the minstrel said aloud.

00:07:55There's something in it somewhere,

00:07:57but what it is and where I cannot think.

00:08:00He wondered if the duke would order him

00:08:02to cause a fall of purple snow,

00:08:04or make a table out of sawdust,

00:08:05or merely slit him from his guggle

00:08:07to his zatch,

00:08:08and say to Sarah Linda,

00:08:10There he lies, your latest fool,

00:08:13a nameless minstrel.

00:08:14I'll have my varlets feed him to the geese.

00:08:18The minstrel shuddered in the moonlight,

00:08:21wondered where his zatch and guggle were.

00:08:24He wondered how and why and when

00:08:26he could invade the castle.

00:08:27The duke was never known to ask

00:08:29a ragged minstrel to his table,

00:08:31or set a task for him to do,

00:08:33or let him meet a princess.

00:08:35I'll think of some way,

00:08:37thought the prince.

00:08:38I'll think of something.

00:08:42The hour was late,

00:08:43and revellers began to reel

00:08:45and stagger home from inns and taverns,

00:08:48none in rags,

00:08:49and none in tags,

00:08:50and some in velvet gowns.

00:08:53One third of the dogs in town

00:08:55began to bark.

00:08:56The minstrel took his lute

00:08:57from his shoulder

00:08:58and improvised a song.

00:09:01He had thought of something.

00:09:04Hark, hark, the dogs do bark,

00:09:06but only one in three.

00:09:09They bark at those in velvet gowns,

00:09:11they never bark at me.

00:09:15A tale-teller tottering home to bed

00:09:17laughed at the song.

00:09:19The troublemakers and tosspots

00:09:21began to gather and listen.

00:09:23The duke is full of velvet gowns,

00:09:26he'll ask you all to tea,

00:09:29but I'm in rags and I'm in tags,

00:09:31he'll never send for me.

00:09:34The townspeople crowded round the minstrel,

00:09:37laughing and cheering.

00:09:37He's a bold one, rags,

00:09:40he's making songs about the duke,

00:09:42giggled a strut furrow

00:09:43who had joined the crowd.

00:09:45The minstrel went on singing.

00:09:47Hark, hark, the dogs do bark,

00:09:49the duke is fond of kittens,

00:09:52he likes to take their insides out

00:09:55and use their fur for mittens.

00:09:59The crowd fell silent in awe and wonder,

00:10:02for the townspeople knew

00:10:03the duke had slain eleven men

00:10:04for merely staring at his hands,

00:10:07hands that were gloved in velvet gloves,

00:10:09bright with rubies and with diamonds.

00:10:12Fearing to be seen in the doomed

00:10:13and desperate company of the mad minstrel,

00:10:16the revellers slunk off to their homes

00:10:18to tell their wives.

00:10:20Only the traveller,

00:10:21who thought he had seen the singer

00:10:23some other where and time,

00:10:25lingered to warn him of his peril.

00:10:28I've seen you shining in the lists,

00:10:32he said,

00:10:33or toppling knights in battle,

00:10:35or breaking men in two like crackers.

00:10:39You must be Tristram's son,

00:10:41or Lancelot,

00:10:42or are you Tyne or Tora?

00:10:46A wandering minstrel, I,

00:10:48the minstrel said,

00:10:49a thing of shreds and zatches.

00:10:51He bit his tongue in consternation

00:10:53at the slip it made.

00:10:54Even if you are mighty Zorn of Zorna,

00:10:57said the man,

00:10:58you could not escape the fury of the Duke.

00:11:00He'll slit you from your guggle

00:11:02to your zatch from here to there.

00:11:04He touched the minstrel's stomach

00:11:06and his throat.

00:11:08I know now what to guard,

00:11:10the minstrel sighed.

00:11:12A black figure in velvet mask

00:11:14and hood and cloak

00:11:14disappeared behind the tree.

00:11:17Ah, the cold Duke's spine chief,

00:11:20the traveller said,

00:11:21a man named Whisper.

00:11:24Tomorrow he will die.

00:11:26The minstrel waited.

00:11:28He'll die because to name your sins

00:11:30he'll have to mention mittens.

00:11:33I leave at once for other lands

00:11:35since I have mentioned mittens,

00:11:38he sighed.

00:11:39You'll never live to wed his niece.

00:11:41You'll only die to feed his geese.

00:11:44Goodbye, good night, and, er,

00:11:47sorry.

00:11:48The traveller vanished like a fly

00:11:51in the mouth of a frog

00:11:52and the minstrel was left alone

00:11:53in the dark, deserted street.

00:11:56Somewhere a clock dropped

00:11:57a stony chime into the night.

00:12:00The minstrel began to sing again.

00:12:02A soft finger touched his shoulder

00:12:03and he turned to see a little man

00:12:05smiling in the moonlight.

00:12:06He wore an indescribable hat.

00:12:08His eyes were wide and astonished,

00:12:10as if everything were happening

00:12:11for the first time.

00:12:12And he had a dark, describable beard.

00:12:16If you have nothing better

00:12:17than your songs, he said,

00:12:19you are somewhat less than much

00:12:21and only a little more than anything.

00:12:24I manage in my fashion,

00:12:26the minstrel said,

00:12:26and he strummed his lute and sang.

00:12:29Hark, hark, the dogs do bark.

00:12:32The cravens are going to bed.

00:12:34Some will rise and greet the sun,

00:12:37but whisper will be dead.

00:12:40The old man lost his smile.

00:12:43Who are you?

00:12:44The minstrel asked.

00:12:45I am the Gullocks,

00:12:47said the Gullocks proudly.

00:12:49The only Gullocks in the world

00:12:50and not a mere device.

00:12:52Oh, you resemble one,

00:12:53the minstrel said,

00:12:54as Sarah Linda resembles the rose.

00:12:57I resemble only half the things

00:12:59I say I don't,

00:13:01the Gullocks said.

00:13:02The other half resemble me,

00:13:04he sighed.

00:13:06I must always be on hand

00:13:08when people are in peril.

00:13:10My peril is my own,

00:13:11the minstrel said.

00:13:12Half of it is yours

00:13:14and half is Sarah Linda's.

00:13:17I hadn't thought of that,

00:13:18the minstrel said.

00:13:19I place my faith in you

00:13:20and where you lead I follow.

00:13:22Not so fast,

00:13:24the Gullocks said.

00:13:25Half the places I have been to

00:13:27never wear.

00:13:28I make things up.

00:13:30Half the things I say

00:13:32are there,

00:13:33cannot be found.

00:13:35When I was young

00:13:36I told a tale of buried gold

00:13:38and men from leagues around

00:13:39dug in the woods.

00:13:41I dug myself.

00:13:43But why?

00:13:45Well, I thought

00:13:45the tale of treasure

00:13:46might be true.

00:13:48You said you made it up.

00:13:50I know I did,

00:13:51but then I didn't know I had.

00:13:53I forget things too.

00:13:56The minstrel felt

00:13:56a vague uncertainty.

00:13:58I make mistakes,

00:14:00but I'm on the side of good,

00:14:02the Gullocks said,

00:14:03by accident and happenchance.

00:14:06I had high hopes

00:14:07of being evil

00:14:08when I was two,

00:14:09but in my youth

00:14:10I came upon a firefly

00:14:12burning in a spider's web.

00:14:14I saved the victim's life.

00:14:16The fireflies,

00:14:18said the minstrel.

00:14:19No, spiders.

00:14:20The blinking arsonist

00:14:22had set the web on fire.

00:14:25The minstrel's

00:14:25uncertainty increased,

00:14:27but as he thought

00:14:28to slip away

00:14:28a deep bell sounded

00:14:29in the castle

00:14:30and many lights appeared

00:14:31and voices shouted

00:14:32orders and commands.

00:14:34A stream of lanterns

00:14:35started flowing

00:14:35down the darkness.

00:14:38Oh, the duke

00:16:34A stream of lantern

00:16:37slowly up the hill.

00:16:41It was morning.

00:16:43The cold duke

00:16:44gazed out a window

00:16:45of the castle

00:16:46as if he were

00:16:47watching flowers

00:16:48in bloom

00:16:49or flying birds.

00:16:51He was watching

00:16:52his varlets

00:16:53feeding whisper

00:16:53to the geese.

00:16:55He turned away

00:16:56and took three limps

00:16:57and stared at the minstrel,

00:16:59standing in the great

00:16:59hall of the castle,

00:17:00both hands bound

00:17:01behind him.

00:17:03What manner of prince

00:17:04is this you speak of?

00:17:06And what manner of maiden

00:17:08does he love

00:17:09to use a word

00:17:10that makes no sense

00:17:17A noble prince,

00:17:18a noble lady,

00:17:19the minstrel said.

00:17:20When they are wed,

00:17:21a million people

00:17:22will be glad.

00:17:24The duke took his sword

00:17:25out of his sword cane

00:17:26and stared at it.

00:17:28and faced his captive

00:17:29and touched his guggle

00:17:31softly with a point

00:17:33and touched his zatch

00:17:34and sighed

00:17:36and put the sword away.

00:17:38We shall think

00:17:39of some amusing task

00:17:41for you to do,

00:17:42I do not like

00:17:43your tricks and guile.

00:17:45I think there is no prince
