A collection of cosy crime dramas adapted from Colin Watson's Flaxborough Chronicles, set in a small Lincolnshire market town in the 1960s and '70s.

Inspector Purbright is a thoroughly English policeman: affable, polite, dogged and decent. Created by award-winning crime writer Colin Watson, he appeared in 12 Flaxborough mysteries, four of which were adapted for BBC TV under the title Murder Most English. These five radio dramatisations star Peter Jeffrey, John Pullen and John Rowe as Purbrigh

A Bump in the Night - Tuesday nights in Chalmsbury are becoming quite explosive: first a drinking fountain is blown to bits, then the statue of Alderman Berry is decapitated, and the following week, a giant glass eye is shattered. On loan from Flaxborough CID, can Purbright find the mystery bomber?

00:00:00Bump in the Night by Colin Watson
00:00:08Dramatised for radio by Matthew Waters
00:00:10and first broadcast in 1971
00:00:13The original recording of Bump in the Night was lost
00:00:17and the programme that follows is recorded off-air
00:00:20so the sound quality is not of the usual standard
00:00:23Hold your head well back and look to one side, will you?
00:00:27I'm just going to put some drops in your eyes
00:00:29Just blink them in
00:00:34You didn't do this last time
00:00:37Well, it's better if I can take a good look inside
00:00:39That's what this stops for
00:00:41Belladonna tincture
00:00:43There we are, five drops in each eye
00:00:46Now, keep your head back a few minutes
00:00:48Was it that dreadful bigger dyke man I saw in here before me, Mr. Hull?
00:00:54I'm afraid it was, Mrs. Cornish Mill
00:00:56I'm surprised you allow him on the premises
00:00:57His visits are unfortunately infrequent
00:00:59Now, head back just a fraction, dear lady
00:01:03That's fine
00:01:04I'm just going to give you one little drop of Belladonna tincture in each eye
00:01:09Distending the pupil, eh, Mr. Hull?
00:01:13Exactly
00:01:14And I'm not to worry if I can't focus properly for an hour or two afterwards
00:01:19Isn't that so?
00:01:20Right you are
00:01:21The effect is disturbing, but, eh, temporary
00:01:24Mr. Keppel, Mr. Keppel
00:01:39What is it, Mr. Grope?
00:01:41There's been an accident in Watergate Street
00:01:42Oh, has there now? That's nice
00:01:44I thought you ought to know, for the paper
00:01:46Oh, yes, indeed
00:01:47The Charmsbury Chronicle is always first with the news
00:01:49That bigger dyke man has just driven straight into a cattle truck
00:01:52He's not dead, though, more's the pity
00:01:54Oh, can't say I'm surprised
00:01:55Oh, I don't know, though
00:01:57They're hardly open yet
00:01:58It would have been a judgment on him if he'd been taken
00:02:00A dreadful fellow, they tell me
00:02:01Ah, he used to bring young women into the poor bobs
00:02:04March them up the stairs like a drover
00:02:06Never the same ones twice
00:02:07Oh, there's not a doubt of it
00:02:09The Usurettes got to be scared to use their torches for fear of what they'd see
00:02:12I used to have to search the back row of the circle before I went home at night
00:02:16To save the cleaning ladies
00:02:17The embarrassment of chancing him on evidence of his diversions
00:02:20Think of that
00:02:21Shocking
00:02:21Oh, he's not a patron anymore
00:02:23It's the television now, I expect
00:02:25There's an immoral invention, if you like
00:02:27I've got a story, Chief
00:02:30Don't apply that loathsome expression to me, Leonard
00:02:33I'm sorry, sir
00:02:33And, by the way, next time you have occasion to ring me here at the office
00:02:37Don't say, give me the desk
00:02:38Mere, you'll thought you were a firm of furniture removers
00:02:41Oh
00:02:41Now, then, what's this story?
00:02:43They've blown up the drinking fountain in Jubilee Park
00:02:45They? Who's they?
00:02:46Russian anarchists?
00:02:47Women's liberation?
00:02:48Young conservatives?
00:02:49Well, the perpetrators
00:02:50I interviewed the park keeper
00:02:52He's married, has three children
00:02:54And is an old boy of Alderson Road School
00:02:56In the First World War
00:02:57Never mind all that, Leonard
00:02:58What about the explosion, or whatever it was?
00:03:00Ah, well
00:03:01The outrage is thought to have taken place in the early hours of the morning
00:03:05Mr. Harding said
00:03:06Mr. Harding?
00:03:07The park keeper
00:03:07Said he was awakened by what sounded like a big gun going off
00:03:11He thought no more of it until his arrival at the park
00:03:14Where he saw a jet of water arising from the ground
00:03:16In the spot hitherto occupied by the drinking fountain
00:03:19Of this edifice
00:03:20A well-known landmark in the town
00:03:22Hitherto?
00:03:23There was no trace
00:03:24Oh, what an extraordinary thing
00:03:26Who would want to demolish a drinking fountain?
00:03:29Brewers
00:03:29They would
00:03:30Any day of the week
00:03:31Have you been round to the police, Leonard?
00:03:33No, sir
00:03:34Oh, well, never mind
00:03:35I'll call round on Chief Inspector Larch myself
00:03:37He might know something about Stan Biggerdyke by now as well
00:03:41You think the boy was telling the truth, or has someone been pulling his leg?
00:03:45He's certainly cretinous, but he's not a liar, Mr. Larch
00:03:47Anyway, it should be a simple matter to verify
00:03:50Some sort of explosion was reported during the night
00:03:54By my father-in-law, a counsellor pointed, in fact
00:03:58We've not had time to look into it yet
00:03:59I suppose you want to make what you'd call a story out of it
00:04:03A drinking fountain
00:04:05You must be hard up
00:04:07All part of the job
00:04:08Come on, then
00:04:09We'd better inspect the scene of the crime
00:04:11You're Harding, are you?
00:04:15The park keeper?
00:04:16That's right
00:04:17Just what has been going on here?
00:04:19You can see for yourselves
00:04:21The fountain's gone
00:04:22That's all I know
00:04:24What were you doing during the night, Mr. Harding?
00:04:29Parachute jumping
00:04:30That attitude will get us nowhere
00:04:32Answer my question, will you?
00:04:33I was in bed sleeping
00:04:34What else should I have been doing?
00:04:36You heard nothing?
00:04:37I had a damn great bang
00:04:38A lot of others did too, I expect
00:04:41Did you think you came from the park?
00:04:42I didn't think anything
00:04:44I went back to sleep
00:04:45I see
00:04:46You had the job of maintaining the fountain, I suppose
00:04:49Cleaning it and so on
00:04:50That's right
00:04:51Bit of a nuisance, was it?
00:04:53Hey, what's that supposed to mean?
00:04:55That's entirely up to you, Mr. Harding
00:04:57I don't think I've said anything to which you could take exception
00:04:59You could have said I blew the damn thing up myself to save cleaning it
00:05:03Really, Mr. Harding?
00:05:05Well, that'll be all
00:05:06Yes, I've got work to do
00:05:08For now
00:05:08And I'll be obliged if you could find a few stakes and rope the area off
00:05:12We shall want to take a closer look without being trampled to death by the over-sixties club
00:05:16You don't really think he did it, do you?
00:05:20Why not?
00:05:20He's a cheeky old bastard
00:05:22Unless, of course, Kevill, you know who's responsible
00:05:25Me, old chap?
00:05:26But then I was forgetting
00:05:27A journalist never discloses his source of information
00:05:30Does he?
00:05:31Never
00:05:31By the way, you know Stan Biggedykes piled his car up, I suppose
00:05:37Has he really?
00:05:38And what special reason have you to be interested?
00:05:40I'm interested in everything and everybody, Inspector
00:05:43It's my job
00:05:44Squalid, isn't it?
00:05:46Yes, I knew about Biggedykes
00:05:48He was taken slightly ill while driving
00:05:50He'll be in hospital for a few days, that's all
00:05:52No charge of any kind
00:05:54Why should they be?
00:05:57I was practically blown out of bed last night
00:05:59I rang down here to find out what had happened
00:06:02And some clod tried to put me through to the gas board
00:06:04That was Sergeant Werple
00:06:05He probably hadn't heard anything further
00:06:07Don't be ridiculous, Hector
00:06:08It rocked the street
00:06:09Surely you heard it?
00:06:11Not from Flaxborough, I didn't
00:06:12Tuesday's my civil defence night, remember?
00:06:14I stay over till morning
00:06:15All the same, you can take my word for it
00:06:17The windows nearly came in
00:06:19And all that fool could do
00:06:21Was to spell out my name letter by letter
00:06:24Yes
00:06:25You ought to give him a kick up the backside
00:06:27Look, we know all about that explosion
00:06:28Sergeant Werple's over there now
00:06:30Don't worry, he knows his stuff
00:06:32Are you calling in on Hilda later on?
00:06:36Possibly
00:06:36Well, you might tell her Stan Biggedyke had an accident this morning
00:06:39Nothing serious, bent his wagon a bit
00:06:41It beats me why you let that swine into your house
00:06:45Why?
00:06:46What's he done wrong?
00:06:47Everything he's ever had a chance to get away with
00:06:49And as for allowing Hilda
00:06:51Yes?
00:06:53Well, damn it all, Hector
00:06:55My wife's friends are our own affair
00:06:57And when one of them happens to be a friend of mine as well
00:06:59There's really no need for you or her mother to worry
00:07:02Sheepdog tried, Sergeant Werple?
00:07:06Actually, no, sir
00:07:07Your guess is very wide of the mark
00:07:10The talk is all of an explosion, Mr. Hool
00:07:12An outrage
00:07:13Dear me
00:07:14Look over there, sir
00:07:15What do you see?
00:07:17Nothing
00:07:18Quite so, sir
00:07:19We believe it to be the work of a bomb
00:07:22Wasn't there some sort of memorial there?
00:07:24I seem to remember when the last time I took my lunchtime walk in the park
00:07:28A drinking fountain, Mr. Hool
00:07:29An amenity
00:07:30One pressed the lion's nose and a stream of water spurted from his jaws
00:07:35It worked on the principle of Maine's pressure
00:07:38Ingenious
00:07:39And have you picked up anything in the way of...
00:07:42Clues as to the author of this outrage
00:07:44These bits and pieces are about all I managed to find
00:07:47A mine detector's what you need on a job like this
00:07:49They don't look too helpful, do they?
00:07:52They all mean something looked at properly
00:07:54Try interpreting this piece
00:07:57Part of the firing mechanism, I shouldn't wonder, sir
00:08:03Of the bomb, you know
00:08:05That hinge, you see, would enable contact to be made
00:08:09It's a suspender, hmm?
00:08:13Oh, yes
00:08:14So it is
00:08:15Pity
00:08:17It could be significant all the same, Sergeant
00:08:19A female bomber, perhaps
00:08:21On the other hand, it may merely signify youthful nocturnal grapplings
00:08:26You know, sir, I believe the fountain was a memorial now I think about it
00:08:30Subscribed by Mrs. Courtney Snell in memory of Colonel Courtney Snell
00:08:34I wonder if anyone had a grudge against her or a late husband
00:08:39Wasn't he mixed up in a lawsuit just before he died?
00:08:42Successful plaintiff, sir
00:08:43He sued Mr. Biggerdyke, the haulage contractor, for slander
00:08:46That's defamation of character by word of mouth, sir
00:08:49Thank you, Sergeant
00:08:50An impetuous man, Biggerdyke, by all accounts
00:08:55He gives that impression, certainly, sir
00:08:57Only this morning he impetuously drove his car straight into a cattle truck
00:09:02Good Lord
00:09:03Is he all right?
00:09:05Smashed his car up a bit
00:09:07Yes, what about Biggerdyke, though?
00:09:08In hospital
00:09:09Only bumps and bruises, though
00:09:11He'll be out next week, they say
00:09:13Oh
00:09:13Oh, well, I'm glad to hear it
00:09:16Nasty things, cattle trucks
00:09:18Of course you, er
00:09:19You know what the trouble is, don't you, sir?
00:09:22No
00:09:22The chief inspector
00:09:23He hasn't the first idea
00:09:25Not when it comes to something unusual like this fountain business
00:09:28He's not had the education, you see
00:09:32Still, er, keep that to yourself, sir
00:09:35Of course
00:09:36But, er, hasn't that projectionist at the Rialto confessed to the crime yet?
00:09:40Joel Mulvaney?
00:09:41Well, no doubt he will, as soon as he hears about it
00:09:44But ever since he claimed to have masterminded the great train robbery
00:09:47His confessions have been received with something akin to scepticism down at the station, sir
00:09:52Sure
00:09:53And not a word of treachery will you drag out of me
00:09:57There was meself in it only
00:09:59And that's the holy truth
00:10:00You've not yet said why you did it, Mulvaney
00:10:03Is it seriously you're asking me that?
00:10:07You'll be telling me next you've not heard of the organization
00:10:10Let's see if you'll say you've never heard of the organization
00:10:14Oh, yes, of course
00:10:16Quite
00:10:17Very well
00:10:19I'm ready
00:10:21I suppose there'll be a farce of a trial
00:10:24Er, no, I can't say there will be
00:10:26No trial
00:10:28Ah, so that's how it's to be
00:10:31It's the cellar and the convenient backfire of a car you'll be having in mind, Mr. Larch
00:10:37You're free to go, Mr. Mulvaney
00:10:41Ah
00:10:43So it's the ambush after all, is it?
00:10:47A country lane, a dead of night
00:10:49I'm afraid the cellar's no good, Mulvaney
00:10:52It's being redecorated
00:10:55So there's been another outrage, Mr. Grop
00:11:06That's right, there has
00:11:07A fortnight to the day of the first one, Mr. Kebbell
00:11:09Right outside my house as well
00:11:12Poor Alderman Berry
00:11:14Decapitated
00:11:15His head blown right off
00:11:17Wrenched from his body
00:11:18It's a bad business
00:11:19A sad day for Chalmsbury
00:11:21I was very fond of that statue and all it stood for
00:11:24Stood for?
00:11:26Temperance, Mr. Kebbell
00:11:27Temperance
00:11:27Yes
00:11:27Alderman Berry was the town's former temperance pioneer
00:11:31I'll say that for him
00:11:32Do you reckon there's any connection?
00:11:34Connection?
00:11:35With what?
00:11:35Oh, that park business
00:11:37The drinking fountain
00:11:38It may well be that both atrocities are the work of the selfsame
00:11:43Miscreant
00:11:44I was talking to Mr. Kebbell, Leonard
00:11:45I'm still waiting for the Ferguson wedding, Leonard
00:11:49Have you written it up yet?
00:11:50Just about to, Mr. Kebbell
00:11:52Good, and remember that for our purposes marriages are not consummated or solemnized
00:11:58And for God's sake don't ever again describe the bridesmaids as wearing Dutch caps
00:12:03No, Mr. Kebbell
00:12:04There was a film being shown to our patrons last week
00:12:08About a man unjustly convicted of someone else's crime
00:12:11When he came out, he was an enemy of society
00:12:14And did a lot of dreadful things that were worse than the one he'd been sent to prison for not doing
00:12:18If you follow me
00:12:19There was some blowing up in it, if I remember
00:12:22So you see, I think the police ought to be looking for someone
00:12:27Who may have been sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit
00:12:30Well, that ought to be a lot easier in Chalmsbury
00:12:33Than looking for all the people who haven't been sent to prison for crimes they did commit
00:12:37Oh, well, of course, if you're going to
00:12:38No, no, no, no, we've got an idea, Mr. Grofe
00:12:41Someone bent on revenge, a bit unbalanced, maybe
00:12:45That's the idea
00:12:46Both the desecrated monuments, you will have noted
00:12:50Commemorated gentlemen who had been magistrates
00:12:52Does that not point to a victim of a miscarriage of justice?
00:12:56It could well do so, Mr. Grofe
00:12:58Now, should there be yet another outrage, oh, God forbid
00:13:00What we'll have to watch for is whether the object is another magisterial monument or representation
00:13:06If so, we'll know for certain that the fellow is an ex-convict
00:13:11Very neat, Mr. Grofe
00:13:13You've taken the brewers off your list, then?
00:13:17Oh, not at all
00:13:17Ah, there's another way of looking at this business
00:13:20It may be the law this fellow's got a down on
00:13:23Or it may be he's got a down on temperance
00:13:25Good heavens, take that drinking fountain now
00:13:28A perfect model of temperance
00:13:30And poor Arnold Barry
00:13:32A magistrate, I grant you
00:13:34But sobriety itself
00:13:35No, it's quite simple
00:13:38Whatever gets blown up next will tell us who the, uh, miscreant is
00:13:43A jailbird
00:13:44Or a son of Bacchus
00:13:46Beg pardon, Mr. Larch
00:13:56But it looks like another of those bombing affairs during the night
00:13:59What does?
00:14:00The destruction of Mr. Hool's eye, sir
00:14:04What are you talking about, Sergeant Werfel?
00:14:06The great eye that was suspended above Mr. Hool's shop, sir
00:14:10The optician
00:14:11Oh
00:14:11It appears to have disappeared
00:14:12The glass part of the sign has disintegrated into pieces like little grains of sugar
00:14:18They're underfoot for quite a way along Watergate Street
00:14:21Crunchy they are, sir
00:14:23Crunchy?
00:14:25That is so, sir
00:14:26Who reported this?
00:14:28Mr. Hool, sir
00:14:29Well, he didn't exactly report it
00:14:30He just stood under where the sign used to be and used bad language
00:14:33I had to advise him to moderate it, sir
00:14:35So he changed to longer words which gave less offence to bystanders
00:14:38I suppose you want me to go and have a look?
00:14:40It might be as well, sir
00:14:41It is the third Tuesday night in the last four that these events have occurred
00:14:45Yes
00:14:45It may be that a discernible pattern is developing
00:14:47Which we, uh, which you may be able to spot, sir
00:14:50Very well, Werfel
00:14:51Lead the way
00:14:53Now, Mr. Hool
00:14:55I hear you've had a spot of trouble with your eye
00:14:58Don't be fatuous, Inspector
00:15:00Some blackguard's blown the blasted thing to smithereens
00:15:03And right now I happen to be in the middle of a consultation
00:15:05He'll have to pursue your inquiries elsewhere
00:15:07I wouldn't take that uncooperative attitude if I were you, sir
00:15:10The ownership of the advertisement does not give you the right to be indifferent to police investigation
00:15:15Destruction of private property in a public place is a serious matter
00:15:19Well, you don't imagine I blew it up, do you?
00:15:21In our job, we imagine nothing, sir
00:15:23We seek the facts
00:15:24If you attempt to elicit facts without using your imagination, that probably explains your consistent lack of success
00:15:30Did that sign of yours happen to be insured, sir?
00:15:35Oh, naturally
00:15:35For £50,000
00:15:36Indeed, sir
00:15:38You must be very grateful that someone has enabled you to capitalise on the policy
00:15:42Of course
00:15:43When did you leave your shop yesterday evening?
00:15:46I left my consulting rooms at precisely five o'clock
00:15:49And you didn't return until this morning?
00:15:51No
00:15:51You're quite sure of that?
00:15:53Well, not absolutely
00:15:54I am a schizophrenic, you know
00:15:56I mean, half of me takes a good deal of watching
00:15:58Perhaps it slipped away in the night
00:16:00It strikes me both halves need watching, Mr. Hull
00:16:03I may have further questions to ask you later
00:16:06I gravely doubt, Inspector, if I shall have either the time or inclination to answer them
00:16:11Good day
00:16:12There's been another one, hasn't there, Hector?
00:16:15Yes, Father
00:16:16The best, up to now
00:16:18Whoever's playing these damn fool tricks has got to be caught
00:16:21The council will be furious
00:16:23The whole town's up in arms
00:16:26Well, so it is
00:16:28I'm not joking
00:16:29Can't you see what an impossible position it puts me in?
00:16:33A chairman having to explain to his committee
00:16:35That his own son-in-law doesn't seem able to protect the town from a blasted, bomb-throwing lunatic
00:16:40He hasn't thrown any yet, Father
00:16:41Oh, of course he may do
00:16:43Now, see here, Hector
00:16:45Have you honestly no idea of who's responsible?
00:16:49Oh, so that's how it is
00:16:51That's how what is
00:16:52Why didn't you answer?
00:16:54I was trying to think of who you were suggesting
00:16:56Wouldn't you better tell me?
00:16:57It has occurred to several of us that this sort of behavior sounds remarkably characteristic of your friend, Bigger Dyke
00:17:03Why on earth should you think that?
00:17:05Oh, come on, Hector
00:17:06You know what the fellow is
00:17:07Anyone who could have fixed up that horrible contraption in the ladies
00:17:11That the mayoress is at home last year
00:17:13That was never proved
00:17:14We knew, all right
00:17:15Bigger Dyke may look half-sloss most of the time
00:17:18But he's got a rotten streak right through
00:17:20But just because he's sponsored your membership
00:17:23This is all rather beside the point, you know
00:17:25Stan may have done some silly things in the past
00:17:27But I haven't the slightest reason to suspect him of this lot
00:17:30And I certainly wouldn't protect him
00:17:32If that's what you're driving at
00:17:33It wouldn't be the first time
00:17:35And what specific occasion have you in mind?
00:17:39That driving case, if you must know
00:17:42People talk as they will
00:17:44It was said you'd given Bigger Dyke the chance to sober up before he could be examined
00:17:50He asked for his own doctor
00:17:51That was his right
00:17:53The man was on holiday, but we weren't to know that
00:17:55You could have found out in less than the two hours it took you to get somebody else
00:17:58All that's been gone over, forget it
00:18:00All that black coffee was never gone over
00:18:02What did you say?
00:18:05The coffee you got Bigger Dyke to drink when you thought no one was looking
00:18:09A whole flask that Hilda had made for you
00:18:11Where the hell did you get that story?
00:18:13You ought to know by now that nothing could be kept quiet for long in a town like this
00:18:16Do you believe it?
00:18:19I'm not sure
00:18:20But at least you should have a go at Bigger Dyke
00:18:23Let it get around that you've questioned him
00:18:25I might
00:18:28Good, that's sensible
00:18:30And Hector
00:18:32I do advise you and Hilda not to see him socially for a while
00:18:36Not till this thing's blown over
00:18:37I think you might leave me just a little discretion
00:18:39You don't seem to realise what trouble you might bring on yourself
00:18:42And the family
00:18:43The family?
00:18:45Well, Hilda
00:18:46And me
00:18:47And dear mother-in-law
00:18:50Yes
00:18:52My dear wife too, of course
00:18:56Come in, Hector
00:19:00Thank you
00:19:01Come along, Sergeant
00:19:02Yes, sir
00:19:03I'd like Sergeant Whirple to be present if that's all right with you, Mr. Bigger Dyke
00:19:08Fine with me, old boy
00:19:09I'm sure the Sergeant is a source of never-ending joy
00:19:13You may be wondering why I asked if you'd be good enough to let us come and see you
00:19:18Well, actually
00:19:19The fact is I wish to ask you a few questions in connection with a routine inquiry we're making
00:19:25So we shall begin by stating what you doubtless know already
00:19:28That on three Tuesday nights this month, including last night
00:19:32There have been various explosions in town
00:19:35Severely damaging certain pieces of property
00:19:37Another one last night, eh?
00:19:39You don't say
00:19:40I do say
00:19:41And nobody has been hurt yet
00:19:43But that doesn't mean we should view these things less seriously
00:19:46Of course not
00:19:48In the absence of more concrete information
00:19:50We're obliged to question everyone whose name may happen to have cropped up in discussion of this affair
00:19:56Naturally, Mr. Bigger Dyke, this implies no actual suspicion on our part
00:20:00We wish merely to eliminate everyone who can give a reasonable account of himself
00:20:04Oh, go ahead then
00:20:05Eliminate me
00:20:07I imagine I need only to ask you to give some brief account of your whereabouts
00:20:11During the three nights in question for that to be possible, sir
00:20:14I'm not requiring a formal statement, you understand
00:20:17Just tell me competentially
00:20:19You're under no obligation, of course
00:20:21Er...
00:20:22They were all Tuesdays, did you say?
00:20:25Yes
00:20:25Well, I'm out of town every Tuesday night
00:20:29You can ask the missus
00:20:30You should know that yourself, old boy
00:20:33It's my club night in Flaxborough
00:20:35I stay on at a pal's place afterwards
00:20:37Bert smiles, he'll tell you
00:20:39Well, that seems satisfactory
00:20:42You can hardly be in two places at once, can you?
00:20:45Hardly
00:20:45And the name of the club?
00:20:46The trade and haul in St. Anne's Place
00:20:49And this, Mr. Smiles?
00:20:50Counselor Smiles, purely roamed
00:20:52Thank you
00:20:54I don't think we need to trouble you anymore, Mr. Bigger Dyke
00:20:57Oh, no trouble, old boy
00:20:58No trouble
00:20:59Oh, Mr. Hoover
00:21:02I've removed the remains of the eye frame
00:21:05Which I shall have to take away for a little while, I'm afraid
00:21:07You may keep it forever if you wish, Sergeant
00:21:09If the decisions rested with me, sir, I'd send it to the forensic laboratory
00:21:13It might well be of forensic significance
00:21:15The chief inspector doesn't go much for science, though
00:21:19He says all criminals condemn themselves out of their own mouths
00:21:22Does he?
00:21:23I suppose he didn't ask you if you knew anything that might be helpful when he came in this morning
00:21:28He didn't, as a matter of fact
00:21:29No
00:21:30He merely tried in the clumsiest manner possible to persuade me to condemn myself out of my own mouth
00:21:34I do wish he wouldn't take that line, sir
00:21:37He doesn't actually mean to be offensive, but people ought to know that
00:21:41His methods tend to alienate sympathy, you know
00:21:45It must be very trying for you, Sergeant
00:21:47Not trying, exactly, sir
00:21:49I just don't like to see policemen getting a name for being unintelligent
00:21:52Not all of us are stupid
00:21:54I'm sure not, Sergeant
00:21:55You see, adhesive tape
00:21:58Here, on the framework
00:22:00Now, the forensic people could probably tell us a lot from that
00:22:03Really?
00:22:04Oh, yes
00:22:05Where it was made
00:22:06What batch it was in
00:22:07Name of the chemist it was sent to
00:22:09When
00:22:10All that
00:22:11Oh, yes
00:22:12Oh, well
00:22:13Into the bin
00:22:14Should you have done that?
00:22:17The chief would never bother with it, sir
00:22:19He takes a very straightforward view
00:22:20Oh, he spurns empiricism
00:22:22Mr. Larch spurns everything, sir
00:22:24Oh, there is one thing I find puzzling
00:22:27The frame that held the eye must have been some eight or nine feet above the ground
00:22:31I had to fetch a pair of steps to get it down
00:22:34How do you reckon our chap reached it?
00:22:37Reached it?
00:22:37To stick his bomb on it, sir
00:22:39Oh
00:22:39The adhesive tape to which I alluded
00:22:41At here means to stick
00:22:43A tall gentleman, perhaps
00:22:46An ingenious theory, sir
00:22:48That I can't call to mind anyone hereabouts of seven feet or over
00:22:51Even the chief inspector is only six feet seven
00:22:54True
00:22:55Do you happen to know who occupies the premises immediately above your shop, sir?
00:22:59Of course, they're mine
00:23:00Someone could have reached over from the window above
00:23:03Well, certainly
00:23:04Provided he got into my consulting room first
00:23:06Would that be possible, sir?
00:23:08Perfectly
00:23:08Precies by no means burglar proof
00:23:10But then
00:23:11Who would want to pinch a set of sight testing charts?
00:23:15Perhaps another optician, sir?
00:23:17One not quite so well established
00:23:19There's no rhyme, no reason in it, Mr. Kebble
00:23:23That's what bothers me
00:23:24Now, if that whole man were temperance
00:23:27He's not even on the bench
00:23:30Ah, there go both your theories then, Mr. Grope
00:23:32Hard lines, old chap
00:23:34Oh, by the way
00:23:36Our poetry's your department
00:23:38As our resident epitaph writer, so to speak
00:23:40What do you make of that?
00:23:42Ah, July 1st
00:23:45In memoriam
00:23:47The thirst that from the soul doth rise
00:23:51Doth ask a drink divine
00:23:53There'll be that dark parade of tussles and of coaches soon
00:23:59It's easy as a sign
00:24:02Does that mean anything to you?
00:24:04No
00:24:05Except it's not proper poetry
00:24:07Doesn't seem right for in memoriam
00:24:09You only think that because it's not one of yours
00:24:12Drink divine?
00:24:14Sounds like a brewer's advertisement
00:24:16You aren't going to print it, are you?
00:24:18Naturally
00:24:18It's paid for
00:24:19Who brought it in?
00:24:21Nobody
00:24:21Came by post
00:24:22No name or address
00:24:23But postal order
00:24:24I just wondered if you knew the quotation
00:24:27Seems harmless enough
00:24:29But we don't want to risk any double meanings
00:24:31Wait a bit
00:24:33It's out of some song or other
00:24:35I've got it
00:24:37Drink to me only with thine eyes
00:24:40And I'll not look for wine
00:24:42Then
00:24:43The thirst that from the soul doth rise
00:24:46Doth ask a drink divine
00:24:47But the rest of it
00:24:50Tussles and all that
00:24:51That's not part of it
00:24:53Yes, that's odd
00:24:54Oh, never mind
00:24:56You can't do any harm to Prince's
00:24:57Now we're on the subject
00:25:00I was wondering if you'd fancy publishing my latest ode
00:25:03What ode is that, Mr. Grove?
00:25:05Ode to the river chowl
00:25:06As it passes between the watercress beds
00:25:08And the mighty oilseed mill
00:25:09Sounds like good stuff
00:25:11Yes
00:25:11I'll bring it in tomorrow
00:25:14Oh, well, I must be off
00:25:16Time to open up for the matinee
00:25:17Dance of the vampires it is this week
00:25:20Be seeing you, Mr. Kebbell
00:25:22Leonard?
00:25:29Yes, Mr. Kebbell?
00:25:30What are you up to?
00:25:31Working on this, sir
00:25:32And what is this supposed to be?
00:25:40I thought it'd be a good kick-off
00:25:41To a sort of gossip column, sir
00:25:43Like William Hickey
00:25:44Inside store
00:25:45Good God, boy
00:25:46You'll have me inside
00:25:47If you persist in putting that sort of thing in the paper
00:25:49Take it away and burn it
00:25:51Do you mean you're spiking it, sir?
00:25:53Leonard
00:25:53On a paper like ours
00:25:55We have to live with the people we write about
00:25:57It makes a difference
00:25:59Do you know there are still three shops in Charmsbury
00:26:03Where you can buy a horsewhip?
00:26:05I've been most careful about names
00:26:07Yes, I can see you have
00:26:08All the same
00:26:09I'm not sure that
00:26:10Socialite wife of police chief
00:26:13Entirely rules out identification
00:26:15Oh
00:26:16You could cut out socialite
00:26:18Let me put it this way
00:26:20Chief Inspector Larch
00:26:22Won't thank us for telling the town
00:26:23That his wife
00:26:24Is to be seen at
00:26:25Swank caravan parties
00:26:27Latest craze of the Charmsbury top set
00:26:29Sounds like teeth
00:26:31You should be jolly grateful
00:26:32I toned it down anyway
00:26:34I don't call references to a hairy
00:26:36Armed mystery playboy
00:26:38Toning down
00:26:39Well, I didn't write anything about her
00:26:40Taking her clothes off
00:26:41What?
00:26:42Leonard, I think you'd better tell me exactly
00:26:45What you're talking about
00:26:46Well, sir, it was last night
00:26:48I thought since it was a Tuesday night
00:26:51That I might have a bit of a look round
00:26:53And see if there was anything doing
00:26:54You know, any nefarious goings-on
00:26:57Bombs, you mean?
00:26:58I see
00:26:59Carry on
00:27:00Well, sir, first of all
00:27:01This was just after midnight
00:27:03I met Mr. Who
00:27:04Mr. Who, eh?
00:27:05That's interesting
00:27:06What was he up to?
00:27:08He said his housekeeper was on the prowl, sir
00:27:10On the prowl?
00:27:11Yes, sir
00:27:12At first I took him to mean
00:27:13She was mixed up in the bombings
00:27:15But then he explained
00:27:16That she tends to get, as he put it
00:27:18Amorous
00:27:19About once a fortnight
00:27:21Couldn't he just lock himself in his bedroom?
00:27:23No, sir
00:27:23He said that only gets her more excited
00:27:25So he has to go out for a couple of hours
00:27:28To give her time to wind down
00:27:29Ah, I suppose we can accept that
00:27:31Yes, sir
00:27:32Well, next I caught sight of this man
00:27:35Walking rather furtively
00:27:37I thought
00:27:37Towards the outskirts of town
00:27:39So I followed very cautiously
00:27:42Some distance behind
00:27:43He walked on beyond the Chalmsbury Hall
00:27:45It's company
00:27:46Then down a little country lane
00:27:48And into a field
00:27:49Where there was this large trailer caravan
00:27:51Which the man entered
00:27:53Well, when I got over to the window
00:27:55I could see a little gap in the curtains
00:27:57So I peered in
00:27:59And there was this man taking his jacket off
00:28:02Well, sir
00:28:03It was when he started taking his trousers off
00:28:04That I realised that he was not so much a man as a woman
00:28:07I see
00:28:08You didn't think it appropriate at that moment
00:28:11To make a discreet withdrawal
00:28:13I was about to, sir
00:28:14When the man, the lady
00:28:17I turned toward the window
00:28:18And I was afraid that she'd see me if I made any moves
00:28:21So you stayed where you were
00:28:22Yes, sir
00:28:23And what happened next?
00:28:25She continued to remove her clothes, sir
00:28:27Having some difficulty with the strap of her brassiere
00:28:30It was then the hairy arm I mentioned
00:28:33Suddenly appeared and came to her assistance
00:28:35Then, as her final garment was discarded
00:28:39She made a turn toward the window
00:28:42Full-frontally
00:28:43Yes, sir
00:28:44And I realised who the lady was
00:28:47So you enjoyed the presumably rare privilege
00:28:50Of Chief Inspector Larch's view of matrimony
00:28:53Yes, sir
00:28:53And the identity of the hairy arm to mystery playboy
00:28:57That remained a mystery, sir
00:28:59Hilda Larch always was unpredictable, like her mother
00:29:02You, er, don't want me to write anything, then, sir?
00:29:06Oh, God, no, Lynette
00:29:07Not unless we want a libel action on our hands
00:29:10Mr. Chairman
00:29:12Everybody in the town is getting very alarmed and anxious
00:29:16About these dastardly explosions
00:29:18And I want to know what is being done
00:29:20In regard to putting whoever's responsible under lock and key
00:29:23The detection of crime is, I believe, Councillor Lynette
00:29:27The province of the police
00:29:29The public safety is involved in this, Mr. Chairman
00:29:32We have every right to chivvy the police
00:29:34If they're not being efficient in regard to protecting our ratepayers
00:29:36We as a committee cannot simply stand aside while the town is blown to bits
00:29:42We could ask the police for a confidential report on the progress of investigation
00:29:46Would that be fair?
00:29:48Er, no, Mr. Chairman, I don't think it would
00:29:51There, er, are a lot of people who think the police here in Chalmsbury haven't made an arrest
00:29:57Because, er, somebody doesn't want an arrest
00:30:00I think the chairman will have a fair idea of what I'm...
00:30:03Oh, no, he hasn't
00:30:04You'd better explain that insinuation
00:30:06Now, Mr. Chairman, I am not getting at you personally
00:30:10But it's got to be said that Chief Inspector Larch is a member of your family
00:30:15High personal relationships are no concern of this council
00:30:18And this despicable attempt to drag them into this case is perfectly monstrous
00:30:22The fact remains
00:30:25A dangerous criminal
00:30:27Perhaps a lunatic is at large in the town
00:30:30Now, what I suggest, and I propose it formally
00:30:33Is that we approach the Chief Constable of the county
00:30:37And ask him to look into the whole affair
00:30:39Chum?
00:30:41Chief Constable Heseldine here
00:30:43How are you, old man?
00:30:47Good, good
00:30:48Dogs all well?
00:30:51Fine
00:30:52And Mrs. Chubb?
00:30:55Oh, I'm sorry to hear that
00:30:57Still, it's usually a pretty straightforward operation
00:30:59Anyway, to get down to brass tacks
00:31:01I want to borrow one of your Flaxborough men
00:31:04One not known in Chalmsbury
00:31:06And a cut above those layabouts in dirty raincoats
00:31:09To do nothing but harass bookies for free bets
00:31:11A real detective, old man
00:31:13Can you run to one?
00:31:16Yes, yes, of course
00:31:17Just pulling your leg
00:31:18It's these Chalmsbury explosions
00:31:20You've probably heard about
00:31:22Just received a deputation of civic dignitaries
00:31:25Making allegations about their Chief Inspector Larch
00:31:28Not that I'd bother about that normally
00:31:30One end of that lot is so like the other
00:31:32It's a wonder when they take their hats off
00:31:34And they're not running for indecent exposure
00:31:36Yes
00:31:38The worrying thing is
00:31:41That I've recently been handed a confidential report
00:31:44Of a considerable quantity of missing explosives
00:31:46From the Flaxborough Civil Defence Training Centre
00:31:50And guess who the leading light of the Flaxborough Civil Defence Demolition Corps is
00:31:55You've said it
00:31:57Chief Inspector Larch
00:32:00Chief Inspector Larch
00:32:01Yes
00:32:02My name's Purbright
00:32:03Flaxborough CID
00:32:05Oh
00:32:05I expect the Chief Constable
00:32:06Yes, of course, Mr Purbright
00:32:08I'd heard you were being loaned to us in our distress
00:32:10Uh-huh
00:32:11We are baffled
00:32:12But I dare say you'll tie the thing up in a day or two
00:32:15The Chief's idea apparently is that
00:32:18Not being a local man
00:32:19I might be useful as a
00:32:20As a special investigator
00:32:22Sounds awful, doesn't it?
00:32:25Seriously, though, you don't want me
00:32:26Cluttering up your office
00:32:27So I thought I'd go snooping in the open air
00:32:29Oh, you're free to snoop where you please, Purbright
00:32:31You're only carrying out instructions
00:32:33So I'm a goddamn stupid I happen to think them
00:32:35Well, uh
00:32:37The town's chock-a-block with lunatics
00:32:40They'll natter and chatter
00:32:41For as long as you were mine to listen
00:32:43You'll get your criminal all right a dozen times over
00:32:46I only hope you brought a cart
00:32:48Tell me, Mr Larch
00:32:50What would be your own selected cartload?
00:32:53Well, go through them, shall we?
00:32:56Uh
00:32:56My favourite is a cocky, sarcastic little goggle salesman
00:33:01Called Hool
00:33:02Unmarried, middle-aged, but perky
00:33:05Likes taking the mickey
00:33:06Out of local institutions, especially
00:33:08Statues and memorials right up his street
00:33:11Quite clever in his way
00:33:13University degree and all that
00:33:15Making bombs no difficulty to him, I imagine
00:33:18But hasn't this man's own shop been involved?
00:33:20Oldest trick in the world
00:33:21Self-inflicted injury
00:33:22Motive?
00:33:25Don't worry about motives in this town, old son
00:33:27Sheer bloody-mindedness
00:33:29Anyway, I told you he's got a down on monuments
00:33:32Who next?
00:33:34Keble
00:33:34Editor of the local rag
00:33:36Finds life a bloody great joke
00:33:38I wouldn't put it past him to help the fun along
00:33:41Especially if it provided him with copy
00:33:43Who else?
00:33:45Commissionaire at the Rialto
00:33:47Name of Grope
00:33:48Grope?
00:33:49Walter Grope
00:33:50Constant film viewing may have unbalanced an already unsteady mind
00:33:54And his hours of employment give him plenty of opportunity
00:33:57For nocturnal villainy
00:33:59I see
00:33:59And lastly, my father-in-law
00:34:02Counselor Pointer
00:34:04I've nothing specific against him
00:34:07Nothing I can put my finger on
00:34:09But
00:34:09He's hard to weigh up
00:34:11For some reason
00:34:13He's taken a violent dislike to a friend of mine called Biggerdyke
00:34:16Oh, Stan used to be a bit wild, certainly
00:34:19But he's settled down now
00:34:20All the same, the name has stuck
00:34:22And Pointer knows that
00:34:24He's doing his damnedest to get Biggerdyke knocked off for this business
00:34:27You think Mr. Pointer is trying to frame Biggerdyke?
00:34:31It's a bit far-fetched, isn't it?
00:34:33Far-fetched as hell
00:34:34But you don't know Pointer
00:34:36He takes a long time and goes the long way round if he wants to do anybody
00:34:41But by God, he does them in the end
00:34:43Well, there you are, Perbrite
00:34:46Enjoy yourself
00:34:48And if one of our home-smoked maniacs blows your own bloody head off
00:34:52Don't blame me
00:34:54Enjoying the soup?
00:35:04Very tasty, thanks
00:35:05My name's Payne
00:35:07I'm your fellow lodger
00:35:09How do you do?
00:35:11Well, I must say, Inspector
00:35:14You don't look a bit like a policeman to me
00:35:16And who says I'm a policeman?
00:35:18Our good landlady, Mrs. Crispin
00:35:20She's very proud to have acquired you
00:35:23Oh, dear, you aren't meant to be incognito, are you?
00:35:29Something like that
00:35:30But it doesn't really matter
00:35:31The communications in this town must be excellent
00:35:36First rate
00:35:38And yet there are some things that one simply cannot find out, apparently
00:35:42Well, that depends what you want to find out
00:35:45You are, I presume, following some specific line of inquiry here?
00:35:51After a fashion
00:35:52Police probe mystery blasts?
00:35:55You really must not draw me into any indiscretions, Mr. Pen
00:35:59Oh, but indiscretions are the currency in this town, Inspector
00:36:03One is traded for another
00:36:05You must be prepared to start somewhere
00:36:08Is that an invitation?
00:36:11As we are to share one of Mrs. Crispin's semolina puddings
00:36:14Today being a Tuesday
00:36:16We may as well recognize a bond of common tribulation and peril
00:36:20Very well
00:36:22Blasts are what I broke
00:36:25Hmm
00:36:25You will have noticed, Inspector
00:36:29That semolina pudding
00:36:31Is not the only feature peculiar to Tuesdays
00:36:34Yes
00:36:35One Tuesday, however
00:36:38The second
00:36:39Produced nothing
00:36:40Perhaps there was no opportunity
00:36:43Or our bombardier otherwise engaged
00:36:47Detained even
00:36:48Quite
00:36:49Although you are aware of my occupation, Mr. Pen
00:36:56It occurs to me that I don't know yours
00:36:58I...
00:36:59I am a shopkeeper
00:37:02Oh, really?
00:37:04How odd?
00:37:04Oh?
00:37:05Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude
00:37:07It's only that the term is so seldom used nowadays
00:37:10People seem to prefer to be known as
00:37:13Confectioners
00:37:14Retailers
00:37:15Merchandisers
00:37:17Or something like that
00:37:18I suppose I could claim to be a jeweller
00:37:21In fact, I merely wrap up manufactured articles and pass them over the counter
00:37:26I keep a shop
00:37:28That's the sum of it
00:37:29A parasitic existence
00:37:32But it harms no one
00:37:35That apparently negative virtue seems to have become rather precious these days
00:37:40Will you be taking over the arrangements for the inquest on Mr. Biggerdyke, sir?
00:38:01Oh, no, Sergeant
00:38:02That's Mr. Larcher's province
00:38:03I'm not sure I can claim to have anything more to do with the case now Biggerdyke's dead
00:38:08You will wait for the inquest, though, won't you, sir?
00:38:11I wouldn't miss it for anything
00:38:12There's no question as to the verdict, I suppose
00:38:16That Biggerdyke blew himself up in his caravan
00:38:19Not really, sir
00:38:20The evidence points that way
00:38:22And also to his responsibility for the previous explosions
00:38:24Is that what you believe, Sergeant?
00:38:28It's what everyone seemed to be expecting, sir
00:38:30He was a bit of a coward, you know
00:38:32Always up to queer tricks
00:38:33But I must say I'm a little surprised myself
00:38:37Bombs are tricky
00:38:38They take intelligence
00:38:40Biggerdyke didn't strike me as the type
00:38:43He wasn't especially bright
00:38:45Well, clever, yes
00:38:47But not to anything really, er, high class, if you follow me
00:38:51But that's not inconsistent with what happened
00:38:54After three hits, his cleverness runs out and he burns
00:38:58Woof!
00:39:00In any case, there can hardly be two characters in a town this size
00:39:04Running around with explosives
00:39:05Mr. Larch said that, sir
00:39:07Maybe that's why I'm a bit doubtful about it all
00:39:10However, I've no doubt the coroner will arrive at the same conclusion as yourself and Mr. Larch
00:39:15I wouldn't say I'd arrived at any conclusion, Sergeant
00:39:19Not yet
00:39:20Now, Mrs. Biggerdyke
00:39:23Do you know if your husband was interested in explosives at all?
00:39:27He never told me anything about his outside interests
00:39:30He spent quite a bit of time in his workshop at the firm
00:39:34And in his caravan behind the depot
00:39:37He used that as an office
00:39:38I never saw inside it
00:39:40Can you tell me, Mrs. Biggerdyke, where your husband was on the nights of June 3rd, 17th and 24th
00:39:48All Tuesday nights?
00:39:50He went to Flax for every Tuesday night to his club
00:39:53A friend, Mr. Smiles, put him up there for the night
00:39:56I think it only fair to tell you, Mrs. Biggerdyke
00:39:59That evidence will be given by Mr. Smiles
00:40:02That your husband did not stay there on any occasion during the past three months
00:40:07Would you care to comment on that?
00:40:09Only to say that I'm not in the least surprised
00:40:11I take it you did not enjoy your husband's confidence in all respects
00:40:16He knows that whatever
00:40:18I see
00:40:19Now, one last point
00:40:21Tuesday, June the 10th
00:40:24Now, can you tell me where your husband was that night?
00:40:27In hospital
00:40:28After his accident
00:40:30He didn't come out till the Friday
00:40:33Thank you, Mrs. Biggerdyke
00:40:35I therefore conclude that the explosion occurred accidentally
00:40:40As it was in Mr. Biggerdyke's caravan that the event occurred
00:40:45And as he alone had access to that caravan
00:40:48As has been established
00:40:49One must presume that he alone was responsible for the explosive being there
00:40:55From this, I infer that Mr. Biggerdyke
00:40:59Who had deliberately given a false account of his whereabouts
00:41:02On the nights of the previous explosions
00:41:04Was responsible for those also
00:41:07And that on the night of July 1st
00:41:10He unintentionally caused the one which killed him
00:41:15My verdict is accordingly death by misadventure
00:41:19Here you are, Mr. Purbright
00:41:23One pint of keg
00:41:24A very good health
00:41:27Ah, thanks
00:41:28Cheers
00:41:29So it's all over then
00:41:35It rather looks like it, Mr. Kimball
00:41:38You'll be going back to Flaxborough then
00:41:40I thought I might hang on here for a few days
00:41:42Well, I had a curiosity to learn a little more about the deceased
00:41:47Quite a practical joke, I write
00:41:50They tell me it was Stan
00:41:51Who got in here one night after closing time
00:41:53Sawed all the handles off the beer pumps
00:41:56And then there was the beetle, of course
00:41:59But you've heard about that
00:42:00Beetle?
00:42:00No, I don't think I have
00:42:01Oh, well
00:42:02Biggerdyke's house
00:42:04Is in a small village just outside town
00:42:06Right next to Parish Hall
00:42:07There was a scrappy place
00:42:09But the rural district council used it for their meetings
00:42:12Well, about three years ago
00:42:14They decided to put up an outside lavatory
00:42:16Those RDC meetings are liable to go on all day
00:42:19You know
00:42:20And, uh, naturally
00:42:22Biggerdyke was pretty mad about this
00:42:24Because the thing was right next to his garden
00:42:26But he couldn't do anything about it
00:42:28A couple of months later
00:42:29At a meeting
00:42:30I was there to report
00:42:31I noticed that each councillor
00:42:33Who came back from a trip to the gents
00:42:35Was looking pale as hell
00:42:37Worried to death
00:42:38If he'd seen a ghost
00:42:39Five or six of them in turn
00:42:41Well, later I heard
00:42:46That each of them went rushing around to his doctor the next day
00:42:49Asking for a confidential check-up
00:42:51Complaining of a burning sensation
00:42:53When they passed water
00:42:55And terrified that they contracted an unmentionable disease
00:42:58Well, the RDC medical officer found
00:43:01Next time he was at the parish hall
00:43:03That there was a little beetle
00:43:05Stuck to the white porcelain
00:43:07Just where it would be most tempting
00:43:08He showed it to me
00:43:09Beautifully made
00:43:10Copper
00:43:11Soldered to wire
00:43:12Yes, that's it
00:43:13They spotted the battery
00:43:14And coil under Biggerdyke's head
00:43:15Bloody good job
00:43:18We didn't use the mains
00:43:19Apart from his jokes
00:43:24What sort of life did he have?
00:43:26Well, oddly enough
00:43:27Pretty dull
00:43:28And you get down to it
00:43:29Drinking
00:43:30Girls
00:43:30Rowing club
00:43:31We've got quite a few like that here
00:43:33You'd never believe
00:43:35The number of bald heads
00:43:36And pot bellies
00:43:37In the rowing marble
00:43:38One heave it on oar
00:43:40And they drop dead
00:43:40It's all tankers
00:43:42And totty tickling
00:43:42Old chap
00:43:43Bloody desperate
00:43:44But if you ask me
00:43:45Any idea where he might have acquired
00:43:47A taste for explosives?
00:43:50Civil defence
00:43:50Oh, he wasn't in that lot
00:43:52You can't imagine
00:43:53His firm had no connection
00:43:54With quarrying
00:43:55Oh, I'd be surprised if it had
00:43:57He handled mainly agricultural stuff
00:44:00With no quarrying for miles
00:44:01You see my difficulty
00:44:04Mr. Kevill, don't you?
00:44:06Oh, I do
00:44:06Yes, sir
00:44:07You're trying to trace
00:44:08The source of Biggerdyke's explosives
00:44:10Exactly
00:44:11The authorities take a somewhat jaundiced view
00:44:14When someone appears to be in a position
00:44:16To stick free samples of high explosive
00:44:18All over the place
00:44:19Did you have any close friends at all?
00:44:23I couldn't say
00:44:23Wait a minute, though
00:44:26A male or female?
00:44:27Either
00:44:27I forgot to say
00:44:29Keep us to yourself, old chap
00:44:30But Biggerdyke's caravan
00:44:32Was no more an office
00:44:33Than this pub
00:44:35You probably guessed that
00:44:36But you will never guess
00:44:38Guess who the totty was
00:44:39That Biggerdyke played gypsies with?
00:44:42Mrs. Chief Inspector Hector Larch
00:44:45Mr. Kevill, this little township
00:44:51Deserves to be administered
00:44:52By the Sodom and Gomorrah Joint Sewerage Board
00:44:55I thought you'd like it
00:44:56You're not pulling my leg, are you?
00:44:58Oh, no, no
00:44:58My so-called reporter, Leonard
00:45:00Saw them together
00:45:01Inadvertently
00:45:02He claims
00:45:03When was this?
00:45:05It was a Tuesday night
00:45:07Oh, yes
00:45:08It's the one old
00:45:09Who's eye got blown up
00:45:11Good God
00:45:12Then Biggerdyke was
00:45:13In his caravan
00:45:14When the thing went off
00:45:15Why not?
00:45:16They all had time feuds
00:45:17Anyway
00:45:18Still, it does seem odd
00:45:19To start a bomb ticking
00:45:21And then put off
00:45:21To a date with your totty
00:45:23Yeah
00:45:23Damn me
00:45:25I'd want to stay
00:45:26And see the fun
00:45:27Do you know
00:45:28Mrs. Larch?
00:45:29No, not well
00:45:30She's old Poynter's daughter
00:45:31Quite good looking
00:45:32But hard-boiled
00:45:33Would Larch have known
00:45:35Of his wife's
00:45:36Relationship?
00:45:36God, no
00:45:37If he did find out
00:45:39He'd go up to Hilda
00:45:40Give her a nice smile
00:45:41And then slowly
00:45:43Pull her head off
00:45:44Like a prawn
00:45:45You need to watch your step
00:45:48With Brother Larch
00:45:49I will indeed
00:45:51Yes
00:45:52Oh, by the way
00:45:55How are you getting on
00:45:57With the old paint
00:45:58In your dicks?
00:45:59Rather nicely
00:46:00An intelligent fellow
00:46:02I'm glad you think that
00:46:03There was a time
00:46:04When Payne and Hull
00:46:05Seemed absolutely brilliant
00:46:07But over the years
00:46:09One forgets
00:46:10Talking of Hull
00:46:12I can't quite fathom
00:46:13Why he qualified
00:46:14For one of Biggerdyke's
00:46:15Infernal machines
00:46:16Simple
00:46:17It was Hull
00:46:18Who caused Biggerdyke's
00:46:19Car smash
00:46:20Oh?
00:46:21Gave him a massive overdose
00:46:22Of belladonna tincture
00:46:23In his eyes
00:46:24And returned to some
00:46:25Earlier tricks
00:46:26So that Biggerdyke
00:46:27Couldn't focus properly
00:46:28Rather a murderous joke
00:46:30Well, rather ill-advised
00:46:32Shall we say
00:46:33There was no love lost
00:46:35Between those two
00:46:36Mind you
00:46:38Hull would be
00:46:39Very upset
00:46:40If he knew
00:46:40I'd let slip
00:46:41The confidence
00:46:41It doesn't seem
00:46:43Very important
00:46:44Now the man's dead
00:46:45Oh, now
00:46:46What are you drinking?
00:46:48Brandy, is it?
00:46:52My name's
00:46:53Pointer
00:46:53Counselor Pointer
00:46:55I'd like a word
00:46:57With you, Mr. Herbright
00:46:59You're the chap
00:47:01The Chief Constable
00:47:02Sent over, aren't you?
00:47:04Oh, you needn't look coy, man
00:47:05I know all about it
00:47:06The fact is
00:47:08I
00:47:08I'm rather worried
00:47:10About the Biggerdyke, Kate?
00:47:11That comes into it, yes
00:47:13But the affair's closed
00:47:14You don't
00:47:15Disagree with the verdict, do you?
00:47:17No, certainly not
00:47:18We went as near
00:47:19As we decently could
00:47:20To telling Chief Inspector Larch
00:47:22That Biggerdyke
00:47:23Was the fellow
00:47:23We ought to be after
00:47:24And
00:47:24He acted on your advice?
00:47:26He questioned Biggerdyke
00:47:28Officially
00:47:28In front of a witness
00:47:30I'm quite sure
00:47:31He did his duty
00:47:32Without prejudice
00:47:33Prejudice
00:47:34Occasioned by friendship
00:47:35Yes
00:47:36Did you approve
00:47:38Of that friendship
00:47:39Mr. Pointer?
00:47:40No, I did not
00:47:41Biggerdyke
00:47:43Was the last man in town
00:47:44A man in my son-in-law's
00:47:46Position
00:47:46Should have mixed with
00:47:47Would you mind
00:47:49Telling me, sir
00:47:50If your daughter
00:47:52Was at all friendly
00:47:53With Mr. Biggerdyke?
00:47:54My daughter?
00:47:54Yes, sir
00:47:55Mrs. Larch
00:47:57Both Hector and Hilda
00:47:59Used to see him
00:47:59A good deal, I believe
00:48:00Did you know
00:48:02That Mrs. Larch
00:48:03Was seen to visit
00:48:04Biggerdyke's caravan
00:48:05On her own
00:48:06And late at night?
00:48:09No, I didn't know
00:48:11Perhaps I should
00:48:12Have a word
00:48:13With your daughter, sir
00:48:14With Hilda?
00:48:15Damn it, old man
00:48:16Are you snooping
00:48:17Into Hector's family affairs
00:48:19Just because
00:48:19You've heard
00:48:20Some unsavoury gossip?
00:48:21I think it's high time
00:48:23You told me
00:48:24Exactly what
00:48:25You've been sent here
00:48:26To ferry it out
00:48:27Very well, sir
00:48:28We wish to find out
00:48:31Where Mr. Biggerdyke
00:48:32Obtained his fireworks
00:48:33You see, there are
00:48:35Three disturbing things
00:48:36About this case
00:48:37One is the disappearance
00:48:39From a civil defence store
00:48:40In Flaksboro
00:48:41Of a quantity
00:48:42Of explosive
00:48:43The second
00:48:44Is that Mr. Larch
00:48:47Is a civil defence
00:48:48Instructor
00:48:49With access to that store
00:48:50And thirdly
00:48:52Mr. Larch
00:48:54Was a close acquaintance
00:48:55Of Biggerdyke
00:48:56A man we now know
00:48:58To have been addicted
00:48:58To blowing things up
00:49:00But why on earth
00:49:01Should Hector
00:49:02Want to pass the stuff
00:49:03On to Biggerdyke
00:49:04Even if he did steal it
00:49:05Well, it makes no sense
00:49:07Your son-in-law
00:49:07Is an expert
00:49:08In handling explosives
00:49:10The Biggerdyke
00:49:11Was not
00:49:12But he couldn't resist
00:49:14Spectacular jokes
00:49:15It's conceivable
00:49:17That he may have been
00:49:18Encouraged
00:49:20To dabble in what
00:49:21He didn't understand
00:49:22In the hope
00:49:24He'd make a fatal mistake
00:49:25But Hector would never
00:49:27Do such a terrible thing
00:49:28Not even if he learned
00:49:29Of his wife's relationship
00:49:30With his friend
00:49:31I certainly didn't suspect
00:49:34You did, Mr. Pointer
00:49:35I'm the girl's father
00:49:37Naturally
00:49:38I...
00:49:39Did her mother know?
00:49:41Her mother?
00:49:42Good God
00:49:43I've no idea
00:49:44She doesn't discuss
00:49:44Things with me
00:49:45I see
00:49:46But look
00:49:47There was something
00:49:49I wanted to tell you
00:49:50Before we got on
00:49:51To this business
00:49:51About Hilda
00:49:52I can't help feeling
00:49:54It may have a connection
00:49:55With what you're hinting
00:49:56Last summer
00:49:58About this time of year
00:50:00A girl was knocked down
00:50:02And killed
00:50:03By Stan Biggerdyke
00:50:04In his sports car
00:50:05Biggerdyke was pretty drunk
00:50:07They arrested him
00:50:08Took him to the station
00:50:09Where Hector took charge
00:50:11By the time a doctor arrived
00:50:13Biggerdyke was dead sober
00:50:15And he got off
00:50:16At the Assizes
00:50:17A month or two later
00:50:19I...
00:50:20I heard Biggerdyke
00:50:21In a pub
00:50:22Pretty far gone
00:50:23Talking to Payne
00:50:25The jeweller
00:50:26Payne, old man
00:50:27He said
00:50:28If you ever get
00:50:30Pulled in
00:50:30For being drunk
00:50:31Just ask
00:50:32For a bucket
00:50:33Of Larch's
00:50:34Luscious Lallop
00:50:35And you
00:50:37Do your own conclusions
00:50:38I did
00:50:39You see
00:50:40I knew
00:50:42That Hilda
00:50:42Always made
00:50:43A big flask
00:50:44Of strong
00:50:45Black coffee
00:50:46For the night
00:50:46Hector stayed
00:50:47At the station
00:50:48Can you suggest
00:50:50Why you should
00:50:51Want to protect
00:50:52Biggerdyke?
00:50:53Well
00:50:53The old
00:50:54Biggerdyke money
00:50:55For one thing
00:50:55Quite a lot
00:50:57To believe
00:50:57And Biggerdyke
00:50:59Helped him
00:50:59Socially
00:51:00And so on
00:51:00He was generous
00:51:02Enough to his pals
00:51:02I'll say that for him
00:51:03So
00:51:04You reject
00:51:05My rather
00:51:05Fanciful theory
00:51:06That Mr. Larch
00:51:07May have been
00:51:08Indirectly responsible
00:51:09For Biggerdyke's death
00:51:10No
00:51:12I
00:51:12I don't reject it
00:51:14He's capable
00:51:15Of such a thing
00:51:16And you're still
00:51:17Convinced
00:51:18Hector never
00:51:19Found out
00:51:19About his wife
00:51:20Well I know
00:51:20This much
00:51:21If he does
00:51:21Find out
00:51:22I don't give
00:51:23Much for my
00:51:24Girl's chances
00:51:24That explosion
00:51:27In Biggerdyke's
00:51:28Caravan
00:51:29It could have
00:51:30Been meant
00:51:30For her
00:51:31Too
00:51:31How did the
00:51:33Inquest go
00:51:34Inspector
00:51:35Your move
00:51:36By the way
00:51:37Misadventure
00:51:38All it could be
00:51:40Really
00:51:40There couldn't
00:51:41Have been
00:51:41Much evidence
00:51:42Though
00:51:42Oh nothing
00:51:43Direct
00:51:43I grant you
00:51:44Pain
00:51:44It boiled down
00:51:46To a rejection
00:51:46Of coincidence
00:51:47Four explosions
00:51:48In one small town
00:51:49And then
00:51:51Biggerdyke's
00:51:51Own reputation
00:51:52Of course
00:51:52Not very legal
00:51:54I shall take
00:51:55A bishop
00:51:55If you move
00:51:56There
00:51:56Oh
00:51:57Did no one
00:51:58Suggest why
00:51:59He'd been
00:52:00Doing these
00:52:01Curious things
00:52:02Everyone
00:52:02Seemed to
00:52:03Assume
00:52:03Sheer
00:52:05Bloody mindedness
00:52:06In Inspector
00:52:07Larch's
00:52:07Immortal words
00:52:08True
00:52:09But he had
00:52:11Specific motives
00:52:12As well
00:52:13You know
00:52:13Those
00:52:14I should like
00:52:14To know about
00:52:15But what
00:52:16Grudge did he
00:52:16Bear the
00:52:17Drinking
00:52:17Fountain
00:52:18Not aesthetic
00:52:20I assure you
00:52:20Though that
00:52:21Would have
00:52:22Been understandable
00:52:23No
00:52:24The thing
00:52:25Commemorated
00:52:25A Colonel
00:52:26Courtney Snell
00:52:27Who had
00:52:28In his time
00:52:28Won an action
00:52:29For slander
00:52:30Against
00:52:31Biggerdyke
00:52:32Posthumous
00:52:33Revenge
00:52:33All right
00:52:34And the statue
00:52:36The onslaught
00:52:37Of a drinking
00:52:38Man upon a
00:52:39Totem of
00:52:39Teetotalism
00:52:40Alderman Berry
00:52:42Was a notable
00:52:42Zealot
00:52:43Or bigot
00:52:44According to
00:52:45Taste
00:52:45Biggerdyke
00:52:47Had few
00:52:48Principles
00:52:48But he
00:52:49Liked to
00:52:50Proclaim
00:52:50The few
00:52:50He had
00:52:51Spectacularly
00:52:52And Mr.
00:52:54Hall's
00:52:54Eye
00:52:55Personal
00:52:56Revenge
00:52:56For that
00:52:57Rather
00:52:57Nasty
00:52:58Joke
00:52:58Of the
00:52:58Belladonna
00:52:59Tincture
00:52:59It all
00:53:01Seems
00:53:01Illogical
00:53:02The question
00:53:04No one
00:53:05Seems to
00:53:05Be able
00:53:05To settle
00:53:06Is where
00:53:06The man
00:53:07Obtained
00:53:07His
00:53:08Explosive
00:53:08It appears
00:53:10I shall
00:53:10Go back
00:53:11Without
00:53:11An answer
00:53:12Your move
00:53:14Ah
00:53:15So that's
00:53:16Why they
00:53:16Sent you
00:53:16Is it
00:53:17I was
00:53:18Wondering
00:53:18If you
00:53:18Were
00:53:19MI5
00:53:20Or
00:53:20Something
00:53:20Keble's
00:53:22Convinced
00:53:22Of it
00:53:23There is
00:53:25A rumour
00:53:25Of some
00:53:26Explosive
00:53:26Having
00:53:27Disappeared
00:53:27From
00:53:27Flaxborough
00:53:28Civil
00:53:28Defense
00:53:29Really
00:53:30But the
00:53:31Connection
00:53:32With
00:53:32Biggerdyke
00:53:33Seems
00:53:33Very
00:53:33Tenuous
00:53:34Would it
00:53:36Been
00:53:36Possible
00:53:37For the
00:53:37Man
00:53:37To
00:53:37Have
00:53:37Manufactured
00:53:38Himself
00:53:39Check
00:53:41Wollower
00:53:41Hmm
00:53:43Feasible
00:53:44I imagine
00:53:45Very
00:53:46Dangerous
00:53:46Though
00:53:47There may
00:53:49Be something
00:53:49In my
00:53:50Old
00:53:50Textbooks
00:53:51That will
00:53:51Help
00:53:51They're
00:53:52A little
00:53:52Out of
00:53:53Date
00:53:53But
00:53:53Organic
00:53:55Chemistry
00:53:55Is less
00:53:56Subject
00:53:56To
00:53:56Fashion
00:53:56Than
00:53:57Physics
00:53:57Ah
00:53:59Now
00:54:00Let
00:54:01Me
00:54:01See
00:54:02Here
00:54:05Ah
00:54:06Well
00:54:07Simple
00:54:07Enough
00:54:07In
00:54:07Theory
00:54:08Allow
00:54:09A mixture
00:54:10Of
00:54:10Nitric
00:54:10And
00:54:11Sulfuric
00:54:11Acids
00:54:12To
00:54:12Act
00:54:12On
00:54:12Ordinary
00:54:13Glycerine
00:54:14And
00:54:14Separate
00:54:15The
00:54:15Oily
00:54:15Liquid
00:54:16That
00:54:16Rises
00:54:16There
00:54:17You
00:54:17Have
00:54:17It
00:54:18Nitroglycerine
00:54:19Then
00:54:20Even
00:54:21Bigger
00:54:21Dike
00:54:21Ah
00:54:22Simple
00:54:22In
00:54:22Theory
00:54:23But
00:54:24The
00:54:24Stuff
00:54:24Is
00:54:25Desperately
00:54:25Unstable
00:54:26Remember
00:54:27One
00:54:27Good
00:54:27Jolt
00:54:28And
00:54:28Whoosh
00:54:29Yet
00:54:29Dynamite
00:54:30Is
00:54:31Safe
00:54:31To
00:54:31Handle
00:54:31Surely
00:54:32Isn't
00:54:32That
00:54:33Nitroglycerine
00:54:34In
00:54:34Another
00:54:34Form
00:54:35Hang on
00:54:36A minute
00:54:36Yes
00:54:39Yes
00:54:40Here
00:54:40We
00:54:40Are
00:54:40You
00:54:41Absorb
00:54:41The
00:54:41Nitroglycerine
00:54:42In
00:54:42Something
00:54:43Called
00:54:43Kieselger
00:54:44What's
00:54:44That
00:54:45But
00:54:46My
00:54:46Dear
00:54:46Here
00:54:47It
00:54:47Just
00:54:47Says
00:54:47An
00:54:48Inert
00:54:48Clay
00:54:49Like
00:54:49Substance
00:54:50And
00:54:53What
00:54:53About
00:54:53Detonators
00:54:54Could
00:54:54They
00:54:54Be
00:54:54Made
00:54:55At
00:54:55Home
00:54:55Oh
00:54:56I
00:54:56Couldn't
00:54:57Say
00:54:57Offhand
00:54:58The
00:54:59Only
00:54:59Detonating
00:55:00Agent
00:55:00I
00:55:00Know
00:55:01Of
00:55:01Is
00:55:01Mercury
00:55:01Fulminate
00:55:02I
00:55:04Don't
00:55:04Know
00:55:04If
00:55:05It's
00:55:05Still
00:55:05Used
00:55:05Nowadays
00:55:06Ah
00:55:08Your
00:55:14Heard
00:55:14Of
00:55:14Bigger
00:55:14Dyke
00:55:15I
00:55:15Can't
00:55:15Picture
00:55:15Him
00:55:15Tackling
00:55:16Anything
00:55:16So
00:55:16Complicated
00:55:17We
00:55:18All
00:55:19Have
00:55:19Our
00:55:19Unsuspected
00:55:20Talents
00:55:20Inspector
00:55:21That's
00:55:23Checkmate
00:55:23I
00:55:24Believe
00:55:24Sorry
00:55:25About
00:55:25That
00:55:25Fancy
00:55:27Another
00:55:27One
00:55:27You
00:55:29Were
00:55:29Hoping
00:55:30Purbright
00:55:30That
00:55:31You'd
00:55:31Be
00:55:31Able
00:55:31By
00:55:32Now
00:55:32To
00:55:32Produce
00:55:33Enough
00:55:33Evidence
00:55:33Either
00:55:34To
00:55:34Eliminate
00:55:35Chief
00:55:35Inspector
00:55:35Larch
00:55:36Entirely
00:55:36From
00:55:36Your
00:55:36Enquiries
