00:00:00And a very good afternoon and welcome from the Hungarou Ring where we celebrate the 40th World Championship Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix.

00:00:08It's round 14 this year of the Formula One World Championship.

00:00:12This is the 75th anniversary of this World Championship that so far is very much going McLaren's way.

00:00:19In fact, they can actually take this race off and go on an extended summer break and still be in the lead of the championship when we go to Austin.

00:00:25Even if everyone on their closest challenges have scored maximum points, that's how big their lead is.

00:00:32But it's Ferrari on pole today with Charles Leclerc.

00:00:3470 laps to come around this 2.7 mile circuit and McLaren second and third on the grid.

00:00:41Cooler track conditions at the moment than we had by the end of qualifying yesterday.

00:00:45Soft C5 might not see that too much in the race.

00:00:48Medium and hard are the favourite race tyres.

00:00:50If you've saved a couple of sets of hard tyres, that could be your key to victory today in what is likely to be a two-stop race.

00:00:58Over 300,000 fans have come to the Hungarou Ring.

00:01:01Plenty of tourists in town too.

00:01:03And this is the grid that awaits them for this afternoon's Grand Prix.

00:01:0719 cars on it.

00:01:08Yuki Tsunoda will start from the pit lane.

00:01:10Alex Albon, fifth on the grid in Spa, was the season best.

00:01:13He was slowest in qualifying yesterday.

00:01:16Nika Hülkenberg starts 18th alongside him.

00:01:18Esteban Ocon, beaten by Oli Behrman and qualifying it seven apiece at Haas so far this season.

00:01:24Pierre Gasly, 16th.

00:01:25Kimi Antonelli had a final lap deleted in Q2 and now starts 15th.

00:01:30Franco Colopinto out-qualifying Gasly for only the second time as teammates is alongside Carlos Sainz, who starts 13th.

00:01:37Lewis Hamilton starts 12th.

00:01:38Nigel Mansell won from there.

00:01:40Here at the Hungarou Ring in 1989, Oli Behrman starts where he's finished for the last four races.

00:01:45Then it's two racing bulls, 10th and 9th, Isaac Hadja and Liam Lawson, who's one place above his former teammate, Max Verstappen, who starts 8th.

00:01:53And Max has never won from that grid position.

00:01:567th is the best ever for Gabriel Bortoleto on the grid.

00:01:59Aston Martin, slowest in Spa, qualifying one.

00:02:02And now on the third row, Stroll and Alonso alongside each other.

00:02:05George Russell, Q3, only the second time here.

00:02:09Starts fourth.

00:02:09Lando Norris won the last time he started third.

00:02:12Oscar Piastri won from second here last year.

00:02:16And Charles Leclerc, who's never finished on the podium in Hungary and has never been on the front row, starts on pole for the first time here and the first time this season.

00:02:25Looking forward to this race.

00:02:27We've got the first 11 cars on the grid.

00:02:31It's expected to be a two-stop race on the medium compound tyres.

00:02:33The first outlier is Lewis Hamilton on the hard compound tyres.

00:02:37No big surprise there.

00:02:38He's got to do something different, hasn't he, from there.

00:02:41And I hope he gets a little bit of luck with the safety car timing, if there is one indeed.

00:02:47And then a mix and match through the rest of the field.

00:02:50Sainte starts on soft, as does Hülkenberg and Albon in the second at Williams.

00:02:55So, again, they'll be hoping for an early pit stop and they can, early safety car and pit stop to get rid of those.

00:03:02So, quite a different mixture of concepts of how to best run this 70-lap race.

00:03:09And it's fearsome, this track, because the corners just keep coming at you thick and fast.

00:03:14Oscar Piastri's been on the radio saying, my water bottle's still not working properly.

00:03:18We did see them working on the back of his seat, actually, while we were talking to Zac Brown earlier on in the programme.

00:03:25He'll be hoping to be tasting the sweet success of champagne for the first driver by the end of this race.

00:03:32Lando Norris says he's come here to win this race this weekend.

00:03:36And Charles Leclerc is hoping he can keep the McLarens at bay.

00:03:39And this is a track that rewards patience, Martin Brundle.

00:03:43But with 472 metres to go down to the first corner, the patience could wait until after they've been through that.

00:03:50And it's a great run down to Turn 1.

00:03:52And I can't wait to see how it all evolves with the top three, maybe four, and George Russell getting in on the act.

00:03:57It's only far enough down there to get a slipstream.

00:04:00And a brand new surface, I was talking on the Gridwalk about how its zone is completely new.

00:04:07And so we don't really know, often here you had quite a big difference, delta we call it, like to impress ourselves with, left to right.

00:04:14Because everybody piles down the left-hand side of the grid.

00:04:18Is that still the same with a brand new surface?

00:04:20But in any event, it pays to be on the inside down into the first corner if you can.

00:04:26And it's nice and wide, but those that sweep around the outside often run out of space as well.

00:04:31But it's going to get feisty down into Turn 1.

00:04:34And a nice headwind as well down into Turn 1 to help you break a bit later for Max Verstappen.

00:04:39It's a 200th start for Red Bull.

00:04:42The team that he's scored his wins and podiums and poles for, rewarded by the worst grid position of the season.

00:04:48But he seemed a lot happier with the balance of his Red Bull car on the laps to the grid around about 40 minutes ago.

00:04:56Confirmation of the starting tyres, medium for the top 11, hard for Lewis Hamilton, soft for Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly.

00:05:03Soft 2 for Nico Hülkenberg and Alex Albon.

00:05:07The one stop is technically about 18 seconds slower here.

00:05:12But the track temperatures, if they cool down a little bit more, that might help bring the one stop into the equation to stop overheating those tyres.

00:05:20The tracks had a bit of a reset because we had rain overnight and earlier this morning here at the Hungaro Ring.

00:05:26And it's a bit of an unknown at times for the teams.

00:05:28Just looking at that sky, you know, we had some rain pop up, didn't we, yesterday?

00:05:33Let's go to Bernie at Sky Race Control and see if she's got any updates on the weather.

00:05:41Not quite hearing you, Bernie.

00:05:42Are you there?

00:05:43I am here.

00:05:44Can you hear me now?

00:05:45So, yes, the weather a lot cooler than it has been over previous days.

00:05:49The wind, as we've seen yesterday, changed direction.

00:05:51That's remained into today.

00:05:53But on the radar, it's very hard to tell from Mayo, France, but roughly around half an hour away, there is the beginning of some light showers on that radar.

00:06:01This time, different to yesterday, it's going to start at Turn 14, so the last corner.

00:06:07The start-finish rate, that's where you'll first see rain if it makes it to the track.

00:06:11So, one to watch out for there.

00:06:13I hope there's somebody with some ponchos to hand out at that corner, then that final corner.

00:06:19For a Hungarian Grand Prix, none of the last four Hungarian Grand Prix have been won from pole position.

00:06:26Charles Leclerc has only won one of his last 15 starts from pole.

00:06:29That was Monaco this year.

00:06:31And if there's any track that's similar to Monaco on the calendar, it's this one.

00:06:35In terms of the way the track layout is, yes, no doubt about that.

00:06:39So, what do Ferrari do?

00:06:41They've really got to make sure they finish ahead of George Russell and Max Verstappen, I would say.

00:06:47We know Lewis Hamilton is out of position for the performance of his car as well.

00:06:51He's got a lot of work to do down in P12.

00:06:57Leclerc will be definitely trying to get into Turn 1 first, but how hard is he going to push his tyres to try to keep those super-fast McLarens behind him?

00:07:07We'll see how it goes.

00:07:08McLaren have had a 1-2 finish at the last three consecutive Grand Prix.

00:07:13First team to do this since 2019.

00:07:15They're going to have to beat Charles Leclerc to carry that streak on today.

00:07:18And it's lights out.

00:07:19Away we go here in the Hungaro ring.

00:07:21And Leclerc gets away well.

00:07:23But Lando Norris now switching to the inside to try and get past his teammate Oscar Piastri.

00:07:28Piastri covers him off.

00:07:29Leclerc into Turn 1 around the outside.

00:07:31George Russell's trying to make an impact.

00:07:33Lando Norris could lose a place here to the fast-starting Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin.

00:07:38Leclerc down to Turn 2.

00:07:40Has Oscar Piastri behind him.

00:07:41Then George Russell on the inside is Fernando Alonso.

00:07:44On the outside is Lando Norris.

00:07:46And Alonso has got that move done.

00:07:48The only driver on the grid not to lose a place on the opening lap this season.

00:07:52And he's gained a place on Lando there.

00:07:54Horrible start for Lando Norris.

00:07:56He took up to the inside.

00:07:57He saw a space.

00:07:58Took it.

00:07:59He had a really good start.

00:08:01The initial launch was on.

00:08:02And now he's up alongside the Aston Martin as well.

00:08:05But he didn't quite make it.

00:08:07Lost a couple of places.

00:08:08Went to the inside.

00:08:09And then had to be very cautious on the breaks against his teammate.

00:08:12Good start for Gabriel Bortoleto.

00:08:14He's got ahead of Lance Stroll.

00:08:16Charles Leclerc has done exactly what he needed to do.

00:08:19And he leads this Hungarian Grand Prix from Oscar Piastri and George Russell who's got up a place into third.

00:08:25Then comes Fernando Alonso.

00:08:27Then Lando Norris.

00:08:28Bortoleto ahead of Stroll.

00:08:29Then comes Liam Lawson, Max Verstappen dropping a place down at ninth.

00:08:34And there is Isaac Hadja scrapping away with Oli Behrman.

00:08:37And Behrman has got ahead of the racing ball.

00:08:39Yeah, that's not really an overtaking place into turn 12 unless you're nearly alongside in the braking zone.

00:08:46So into the pit straight again they go.

00:08:50And it's time then for Norris to just regroup.

00:08:53Keep his head clear and clean.

00:08:56But look at this.

00:08:56George Russell all over the back of Piastri's McLaren as well.

00:09:01And Leclerc comfortably out front.

00:09:04So once again, we know the McLaren is really good at keeping his tyres intact.

00:09:09Especially on longer runs.

00:09:10Especially on very hot days.

00:09:12And it's not that hot, is it?

00:09:14Just saw Nika Hülkenberg and Alex Albon going wheel to wheel as they came out of turn one.

00:09:19Albon in 16th.

00:09:20We've got four different constructors in the top four places here.

00:09:24And it's Charles Leclerc who led 20 laps before today's race this season.

00:09:28Has now led 21.

00:09:29And he's almost a second clear of Oscar Piastri.

00:09:32As Max Verstappen goes down the inside.

00:09:34But his former teammate Liam Lawson.

00:09:36And Verstappen has got that eighth place back again.

00:09:38Yeah, lost out at the start, as you say.

00:09:41But Max then, he looks like he's got plenty of grip there, didn't he, Max?

00:09:45So Leclerc comfortably out front, but still has Piastri within DRS.

00:09:52And this is a major, major issue here for Lando Norris.

00:09:57Tucked up behind Fernando Alonso's Aston Man.

00:09:59That is not anywhere near as fast as his kind race through.

00:10:03But it's hard to overtake here.

00:10:04And Lewis Hamilton's got a bit more of an issue coming his way.

00:10:07Started 12th here.

00:10:08And he's lost out to the soft tyre running Carlos Sainz.

00:10:11And to Kimi Antonelli.

00:10:13He's on the hard tyre as here comes Lando Norris with DRS.

00:10:17Blasting his way with an extra 20 kilometers an hour by the end of the straight.

00:10:21Past Alonso and back up a place.

00:10:23He's into fourth now.

00:10:25He's started third.

00:10:26He's still got a bit of a way to go to catch George Russell.

00:10:28That was super important for him.

00:10:31So Leclerc just pops in the fastest lap of the Grand Prix.

00:10:33And moves himself out of DRS range for Oscar Piastri.

00:10:38Wow, the Ferrari's looking good.

00:10:40Where's the McLaren pace?

00:10:42Again, it's what we were saying in Q3 yesterday afternoon, isn't it?

00:10:47In these track temperatures, the Ferrari working very well.

00:10:51Maybe the McLaren will come into its own a little bit later on.

00:10:54We've seen that towards the end of Stint.

00:10:56As down the inside goes Max Verstappen.

00:10:58And wow, I don't think Lance Stroll saw him coming until late.

00:11:02And he made it late and he made it very clean as well.

00:11:05And that's Verstappen up to seventh place.

00:11:06That's a super overtake there from Max Verstappen.

00:11:09And he's moved up two places already.

00:11:11Well, two great overtakes.

00:11:12And more than that, he looks like he's just got a huge amount of grip, doesn't he?

00:11:17He certainly wasn't mentioning yesterday, was he?

00:11:19Well, he wasn't at all.

00:11:20But I said he was reporting that the balance felt a lot better on the laps of the grid.

00:11:24And he's showing that so far.

00:11:27So, Leclerc from Piastri.

00:11:29The gap was about a second when they crossed the line to finish lap two.

00:11:34As we finish lap three, that gap has grown to 1.6 seconds.

00:11:39Maybe Piastri, very content, just to sit behind Charles Leclerc and bide his time.

00:11:43He's talked of patience around this Hungara ring in the build-up to this race.

00:11:48George Russell, about 1.3 seconds behind Oscar Piastri.

00:11:51Then Lando Norris, who needs to start to gain a bit on that Mercedes if he's to get back into the top three.

00:11:57Around the outside here goes Max Verstappen.

00:12:00And no room past Gabriel Bortoleto.

00:12:02These two are great friends and they talk a lot away from the racetrack.

00:12:07And now, in 6th and 7th, they're giving us a real scrap here in these opening stages at the Hungara ring.

00:12:14A few races ago, Bortoleto would not have dreamt to have been this high up at racing against Max Verstappen.

00:12:18It's happening for real here.

00:12:20Let's see what the rookie can do.

00:12:21Yeah, he's got Fernando Alonso, he's part manager on the nose.

00:12:25Let's go, Max.

00:12:26Let's get through these ASAP.

00:12:27He's got GP Lambiezi's engineer with him again this weekend.

00:12:33Yeah, he's following his sort of semi-manager, Fernando Alonso, with Max Verstappen filling his mirrors.

00:12:38Yeah, he's in living the dream, isn't he?

00:12:41Oh, no.

00:12:42He's been noted for making a false start, a jump start, if you like, has Bortoleto.

00:12:48That dream could be about to become a little bit of a nightmare for Gabriel Bortoleto.

00:12:54There might be a five-second time penalty coming his way.

00:12:59Nothing in terms of confirmation on that from the stewards yet.

00:13:02It has been noted, though, by race control.

00:13:05Gap out in front now.

00:13:06Leclerc to Piastri, two seconds.

00:13:08Bortoleto and looking for Fernando Alonso there.

00:13:11No way past into turn one.

00:13:13Max Verstappen hanging on to the tail of this.

00:13:16Lewis Hamilton sees the car in front of him.

00:13:18And Kemi Antonelli go a little bit wide, and that'll give him a bit of hope on the hard tyres.

00:13:23Now they're starting to come into their own a bit more and getting up to temperature.

00:13:27Antonelli has got DRS on Carlos Sainz ahead of him, which might help preserve his 13th place.

00:13:33And let's look at this race start.

00:13:34We can't quite see Bortoleto from that angle.

00:13:37But we can see Lando Norris making an early move towards the inside.

00:13:43Yeah, Lando moving a lot.

00:13:44That can be quite risky on the grid.

00:13:45And then he was, unfortunately for him, he braked quite early.

00:13:49And they were steaming around the outside.

00:13:51And this is where he effectively lost two places.

00:13:54Oscar Piastri also under a lot of pressure from George Russell.

00:13:58So McLaren's not firing their tyres up particularly well.

00:14:01Others just more aggressive, more racy there.

00:14:05George Russell had a massive oversteer slide through turn three that would have caught his attention.

00:14:10This is Fernando Alonso with George Russell to his right-hand side.

00:14:15Russell looking to force his way into a gap and does so successfully.

00:14:19And Alonso's thinking, well, OK, you go and do that.

00:14:21I've still got a McLaren that I can take.

00:14:24This is the problem that McLaren have with their rules.

00:14:28You must never run into each other.

00:14:31Yeah, he was well away there, wasn't he?

00:14:33He was sort of underway before the pack.

00:14:36That was Hulkenberg.

00:14:38That's just flashed up.

00:14:39He's also been noted for a false start, too.

00:14:42It looked there, didn't it?

00:14:43It looked as if he was sort of underway before anything moved.

00:14:46But, yeah, so that's both the Sauber's then under investigation.

00:14:52They're all pretty well behaved, weren't they?

00:14:55These are big, wide cars.

00:14:57Not easy to get them two, three abreast through these corners.

00:15:01But, um, Leclerc 2.4 in the lead now.

00:15:06I'm not sure on Gabriel Portoleto.

00:15:10The car might have lurched a bit.

00:15:11I'm not sure he moved before the lights went out.

00:15:16Bernie Collins, you've had another look at that one because you've got all the onboards,

00:15:43He had an eventful opening lap, did Isaac Hadger.

00:15:47And I think he's in a bit of pain there.

00:15:49Yeah, that hurts a lot.

00:15:50Because if you're turning the corner, your hand's above the cockpit.

00:15:54So I've just...

00:15:55I've seen matches happen with a couple of lurid slides in the previous two laps.

00:16:01So it looks like his grip and his attacking pace has just faded away a little bit, doesn't it?

00:16:07But, yeah, I agree with you.

00:16:08It didn't look like Portoleto necessarily jumped the start there,

00:16:14but was he moving before the whole process got underway?

00:16:18They've got a sensor in the track, so they'll know exactly what they're looking for.

00:16:22Well, we'll keep an eye on that.

00:16:24Lando Norris is about 1.2 seconds now behind George Russell.

00:16:28He has the fastest lap of this race.

00:16:31And Oscar Piastri is 2.7 seconds behind Charles Leclerc

00:16:34and seems content to sit there and bide his time for a moment.

00:16:38Bernie, to you.

00:16:39Yeah, and the information from the team to Piastri has been

00:16:42that Leclerc seems to be pushing a bit hotter there

00:16:44in some of the high-speed sections.

00:16:46So they seem pretty content that Piastri is managing that tyre

00:16:49and let Leclerc do his own thing.

00:16:52Conversely, Norris has been said,

00:16:54it's so important to get by Russell.

00:16:56Let's get him now.

00:16:57If not, we're going to have to go to, they called it, plan A.

00:17:00We don't know what that is.

00:17:01And maybe extend.

00:17:03So different strategies at the minute across the McLarens.

00:17:05I think it's important to try and get past Russell if they can.

00:17:08Absolutely.

00:17:09And we did see, didn't we, that Oscar Piastri,

00:17:12very good at nursing the medium tyre in Spa last week,

00:17:16which he did on his way to victory.

00:17:17Different compound of medium on that particular occasion.

00:17:20No further investigation for Gabriel Bortoleto for that false start.

00:17:26So he's still living the dream on that one.

00:17:28Do you think they reported the wrong Sauber initially?

00:17:30And it's got that feeling too.

00:17:32Because, because Hulkema clearly looked like he got underway, didn't he?

00:17:36We were on board, on board with him.

00:17:38I thought it must be Bortoleto, to be honest.

00:17:40It clearly wasn't.

00:17:41Anyway, they disregarded the Bortoleto one.

00:17:45So he is still very much in play there in sixth.

00:17:49And Verstappen now almost falling out of DRS range.

00:17:53He's done a tremendous first sector, has Max Verstappen.

00:17:56And Piastri now 2.6.

00:17:58Now up to three during this lap on Piastri.

00:18:03Leclerc's got the pace, hasn't he?

00:18:04He has.

00:18:05Absolutely got the raw pace.

00:18:07We'll find this out towards the end of the stint.

00:18:10This is either...

00:18:12Oscar, some competitors are talking about a one-stop.

00:18:15Do you think one-stop may be possible?

00:18:17I mean, the tyre's still okay for now.

00:18:20Man, it's difficult to know with this many laps to go.

00:18:23Yeah, understood.

00:18:24That's interesting, though.

00:18:25Track temperature now at 31 degrees and maybe cooler conditions,

00:18:29bringing that one-stop into play.

00:18:32And the team's had a bit of an unknown about this going into this race.

00:18:35But I was going to say, it's either Oscar Piastri happily managing his tyres

00:18:39and doing what he knows is needed to do to eventually get a victory,

00:18:45or it's Charles Leclerc, and thinking that Charles Leclerc's pushing too hard,

00:18:49or it's Charles Leclerc with the pace of a Ferrari

00:18:51that is way faster than McLaren were thinking going into this race.

00:18:56I think it's faster than Ferrari were thinking as well, isn't it?

00:18:59So, judging by the briefings we had this morning...

00:19:04Anyway, it is what it is, and there is a long way to go.

00:19:08Basically, the Pirellis, they've made them much more durable, haven't they?

00:19:13They don't grain up as much.

00:19:14This is what they're talking about for the gravel.

00:19:17And what it does is it hits you on the fingers

00:19:20on the back of the steering wheel.

00:19:22And it... I've had it happen.

00:19:24It hurts a lot.

00:19:27Remember, Romain Grosjean a few years ago

00:19:29had something very similar as well.

00:19:31A stone went straight onto his thumb.

00:19:33I'm wincing just looking at that.

00:19:36Five-second time penalty

00:19:37and a bit of a wincy moment

00:19:39for Nico Hülkenberg for a false start.

00:19:41I think that was a slam dunk for him,

00:19:43and he's currently running plum last in 20th place.

00:19:46And he's got a five-second time penalty coming his way.

00:19:49He might need to do a one-stop

00:19:51just to try and negate the time he's lost so far

00:19:53and the time he'll lose on a pit stop.

00:19:55Norris, fastest lap of the Grand Prix.

00:19:57He's pushing hard

00:19:58and is now within DRS range of George Russell.

00:20:01So, what we're seeing there, Orlando Norris,

00:20:04as he's been on that charge,

00:20:05is his tyre wear on the McLaren

00:20:08now starting to pay dividends

00:20:09to the tyre wear on George Russell's Mercedes

00:20:12and we're on lap 10.

00:20:13I started to say that the problem

00:20:15with the two McLaren boys

00:20:16is that under strict rules

00:20:18you must not run into each other.

00:20:20You watch how cautious

00:20:21Lando was on the brakes.

00:20:24It's behind his teammate

00:20:25and that cost him dearly.

00:20:28And it was maybe a little bit cautious

00:20:30going into the Lecombe chicane

00:20:32in Spa last week as well,

00:20:34which allowed Oscar the chance

00:20:35to get that super overtake done as well.

00:20:38and he was a little earlier on the brakes

00:20:40going into that.

00:20:42He's half a second now

00:20:43behind George Russell.

00:20:44There's the man out in front.

00:20:462.7 seconds at Leclerc and Piastri.

00:20:48On lap 9,

00:20:50stabilised a bit.

00:20:51One hundredth of a second

00:20:52between the two cars.

00:20:54Piastri's pulled a couple of tenths back

00:20:56on Leclerc's advantage

00:20:57on this particular lap.

00:21:00Russell ahead of Norris,

00:21:01as you can see,

00:21:03and Lando Norris now

00:21:04with DRS coming his way.

00:21:07What's going on with these cars?

00:21:08Is he talking about shifts

00:21:18I can't imagine he's talking about the tyres.

00:21:20So I suspect

00:21:21it's the engine,

00:21:23the power unit.

00:21:30and he won it

00:21:31and he's looking pretty good

00:21:47for them is that
