00:00hey good morning I'm here with my shop foreman Tyson say hi hello we got a Jaguar that was
00:10brought to us the customer just had it to the dealer it looks like let me see that invoice
00:14how many miles it's got on it now right now it's got 112 121 got 112,000 miles on it okay so it's
00:22had 4,000 miles on it in not quite a year when they had it at the dealer they said Testro feels
00:27like rear driveshaft is vibrating ran on the hoist for obvious damage and things out of round found
00:33slight play run out in rear driveshaft assembly replaced installed new rear driveshaft after new
00:38driveshaft installed vibration is still present oops I call that I call that hunting with a shotgun not
00:45hunting with a rifle ran on hoist again left rear axle shaft has more run out than the right side
00:51removed and replaced left rear axle shaft retest drove after client test drove and by it verified
00:57thumping noise that was heard prior is gone now okay and then well fired up let's see what's going on
01:04back here Tyson okay go ahead and take it up holy smoke holy moly well they missed the wheel
01:17slow down a little bit look at that okay well they definitely need a new wheel I can put my hand on that
01:28drive shaft I mean look at how that drive shaft is going up and down here so I don't know did they hit
01:38something again and look the right side you can see isn't going like this but the wheel is definitely bent but
01:49you see how that shaft is turning is level it's not going well but look at this one now I'll put a dial
01:56gauge on a dial board gauge on that and let's measure that Tyson go ahead and turn that off I'm gonna put a dial
02:04board gauge on it get an exact measurement right to left there's speculation then there's accuracy
02:10and so I want to I want to be able to tell the customer there's you know 50 thou run out in that
02:15drive shaft so our axle shaft let's do that right now so what my tech is doing here I'm setting up a
02:23dial indicator with a long probe to get up there in there I want to actually measure that shaft how
02:28much run out is on it because the bill shows that it was replaced last year by the by the dealer and
02:34there's definitely you know to my eye there's definitely a quite a big and out around this in
02:41that shaft compared to the right side so we're gonna take a major on the left side then we'll
02:44take a major on the right side we'll document that the wheel is I'm not gonna bother major net
02:49that's like so obvious to your eye we they got a bent wheel if they want me to put the axle in there
02:53when I disassemble it I'm going to really be looking at a lot of things how much is it right
02:58around 30 30 thou is that it we got all the way around now yep okay so we're 30 thou which is way
03:06excessive to me let's do the right and so that we got a something to compare that to you know a lot of
03:15times it just it takes a little bit more time and and you have to do that and use the right tools that
03:21that's that is the key you know you have the condition cause correction confirm conditions
03:27vibration the cause we want to be accurate about that we don't you know and that's what we're going
03:32to do with the client especially when they've had it to another shop the dealer and they're still
03:37having a problem the correction we'll get to that and then the confirmation is I'm gonna put it in
03:42this new axle and before I you know put it all back together you can bet I'm gonna spin that up and
03:47make sure that run out is gone in that new axle what do we got on this one Tyson bouncing around
03:54five five thousand yeah yeah so on the right side we got five thousand a run out so the left side is
04:0230 thousandths right sides five thousandths that's six times more than the right side so there's
04:09definitely a problem there so now we can confirm our repair you have something to compare it with where
04:15before we didn't or you know the other shop because all you have is you know your eyeball and you're
04:20guessing that's why they probably replace the driveline before they even got this axle I'm gonna go grab my
04:25paint gauge thickness measure and I'm gonna measure the paint thickness on the left side of this car
04:30it's gonna tell me whether this car's ever been you know smacked on in on the left so let me go grab
04:36that let me show you what this does this will take a paint gauge thickness measure I put it on here
04:41okay this panel is five mils thick now if I do it here it's four we're gonna find out if this truck's
04:49ever been painted four and a half so we're within a mil one mil thickness on the paint let's just I'm
04:56gonna just check it out four that's four two okay I want to check this car you want to let it down this
05:06is just kind of a quick way because a guy will not paint a paint a car like a robot they'll add more
05:11paint to it than it's needed so let's kind of see where this is at four and a half that's about what
05:16I would expect to see on there five I don't think the car has been painted four four usually if it's been
05:23painted had bondo on it that that that fender would be like 15 mil thick or something like that so I'm
05:29basically seeing what where the whole car is at and you know we're all about five five and a half see
05:36this is two mil in here I'm gonna go with I don't believe that the rear end has been in a wreck but
05:42anyway that's a nice tool I do use car inspections and I use this on every used car and I just you know
05:48check all the panels and if I get one panel that's way off or a couple panels that's a dead
05:53indicator the car has been in a record and it's had some repaint done on it it's a cool little
05:57tool all right we're we're gonna go call the customer hey Donald no this would be Dave not
06:05good news if I'm getting a call from you you got that right it would be and whenever whenever the
06:10the head surgeon has to call the patient you know it's probably not a good thing talk to me about your
06:15car a little bit I'm grabbing the invoice out of your car from the dealer I reviewed it a little bit
06:19and it looked like you've only got about 4,000 miles on it since it was done so I ran the car
06:23up on the lift the first thing I noticed is your left rear wheel it's got a half inch out around to
06:29it I mean it looks like something you've whacked something super good a pothole maybe I you know
06:34the rim is bent so that's the first thing but I also noticed and I took a measurement on it there's
06:4030 thousandths out around 0.030 out around on the left rear axle now according to their notes here
06:48are the invoice that I'm looking at from the dealer they replaced that axle for you last year
06:53and they also replaced the driveline and according to their notes they replaced the driveline first
06:58that didn't fix it and then they replaced that left rear axle and then you went for a drive client
07:03test drove and verified thumping noise that the hurt prior is now gone was it gone I took it in for a
07:09thumping noise and I'm not a mechanic I'd have to get my son-in-law on the phone my understanding is
07:14they replaced the same part and that thumping went away but they didn't tell me that until
07:19they had already spent a lot more money replacing a bunch of other things then apparently there was
07:24this new vibration noise you've got a vibration in it now are you do you have do you have the
07:30thumping noise when I originally took it to the Jag dealer it was for a thumping noise okay but now you
07:38you brought it to us for for the vibration that they said they couldn't fix at the end okay they
07:44fixed the original noise because then all of a sudden it had this vibration that I had not felt
07:49when I took it there you know I like to hunt with a rifle not a shotgun so here's my story you get a
07:55water bill and the water bill is like oh my gosh it's three times more and you're like what's the
07:58deal here so you call a plumber and the plumber comes out to your house and he sees a leak in faucet
08:03and the plumber looks at all the rest of your stuff and he says well ma'am I don't know what to tell
08:06you I've got an obvious drip out of that kitchen faucet let's take care of that so he takes care
08:11of that you know checks everything else and he goes out and he looks at the meter down in the yard
08:15you know the water meter and the dang thing is still spinning so now did the plumber do the wrong
08:20thing because he replaced the leaking faucet in the kitchen what I'm saying is he had to do that first
08:25before he could diagnose it he's got a main line leaking into the house now I know you're like why is
08:29he telling me this story because I'm thinking that they missed the wheel that was bent okay I think they
08:35just missed that I mean I don't believe the car's ever been wrecked you don't know that right
08:39I'm not aware it has and they asked me if I hit something and I said well I hit a couple nasty
08:44potholes yeah but I haven't had any accident yeah and that can't be the problem and you know Utah I mean
08:51we have to be uh the world leader in potholes around here we manufacture them I think I mean some
08:59of them are like they will just wreck your car and you're like oh my gosh but your left rear wheel
09:04you know both your rear wheels are bent but your left rear is like severely if you wanted to jump
09:09down here I could you know it's up on the rack I could show you what I'm saying is I want to replace
09:14the leaking faucet which is your rim you know I want to do the obvious thing first I do have that left
09:20rear axle that they say on their bill they've replaced and it's got run out on it I mean quite a
09:25bit the right side only has five thousandths of an inch point zero zero five the left rear axle
09:31has thirty thousandths point oh three oh so it's like six times more run out but before I start
09:39you know replacing a part that we just replaced last year I want to fix that rim that's just you
09:44know bent and then and then the bike since you don't have a thump in or anything like that and
09:49then we'll see if the vibration goes away for us that's really all I wanted to talk to you about
09:53I hope that's not soup I hope that's not super bad news no and as you can see I was a little
09:59traumatized by what the dealer did yeah well I also saw that they had it for two months or something
10:04in on the tape I had to buy a car to go visit my car to get them to even talk to me they can't they
10:11wouldn't respond to text they wouldn't they wouldn't answer the call all the time you've been replacing
10:15all these things running up my warranty and then when I get the car it's in worse shape than when I
10:21I'm just kidding oh you know I'm gonna give you a little I'm gonna give you a little secret since
10:27you're a consumer okay it's called r152-11 you probably never I mean you never want to talk to
10:33me again because I tell the dumbest stories it seems like and I and I give you information but I hope it's
10:39not useless but r152-11 subsection 5 is the Utah division is consumer protection and it's the it's the
10:48sales code and what it talks about is is that when you have any service done they have to tell you
10:54three things what they're doing how much it costs and an expected completion time that's required by
11:00law and if they don't do that and it's more than fifty dollars they're in violation of that code but
11:07if you walk in and you never gave approval for a hundred dollars you don't owe them a hundred bucks
11:12I have one question I wanted to ask you you said under the warranty they replaced the left axle
11:18yes ma'am and I haven't driven the car 4,000 miles since then but the axle might need to be replaced
11:25well according to our mileage here you've put 3,500 miles on the car since they did the axle they did
11:31it last May at 108,600 miles and you now have 112,093 miles on it so yeah they did a wheel bearing they
11:41did a left rear axle and a driveline that that's all on the ticket and I'm telling you the left rear axle is bent
11:47it's it's out it's bent
11:49is that possible to have happened in the last 3,000 miles?
11:51no probably no not unless it got impacted or you were in a wreck or something like that so no
11:55I can guarantee that your the the wheel vibration is going to be gone when I get wheels that aren't bent on there
12:00that that I can guarantee but is that axle going to continue to have a little problem maybe but that would be under warranty through the dealer
12:07you can just take that back to them and yeah because they replaced it
12:11yeah anyway I'll have Don get a price on a couple of rims for you he'll get back to you later today with that

12:25okay I know that was a weird story for everybody but you know you got to let your shop do the obvious man
12:30you wouldn't want your plumber because you got a high water bill coming into your house and just ripping up your front lawn
12:35if you had an obvious problem of faucet leaking in the house you'd have to fix that and stop that drip
12:40and then recheck to see if the meter still spinning think like that when you're having stuff fixed
12:45don't don't hunt with a shotgun hunt with a rifle
12:48so I just got off the phone with this Jaguar customer and she's decided she's going to take it back to the dealer
12:54which I think is the right thing to do they charged her for a driveline and an axle
12:59as best I can tell they overlooked the wheel situation and she's going to go back and talk to them about it
13:06and I counseled her that that would probably be her best option because perhaps in the interest of customer service
13:13they might fix the wheels and call an outside source to come in and fix straighten those wheels out
13:18and get rid of that vibration so I hope she gets it resolved. Thanks.
