00:00Women's rights group Sisters in Islam has dropped the word Islam from its public-facing
00:05name following advice from Selangor ruler Sultan Sharifuddin Idris Shah.
00:09The group said the decision was made during an extraordinary general meeting on July 11
00:14and that it would now use its registered name, SIS Forum.
00:17The group's executive director, Rosanna Idris, said in a statement that although they are
00:21dropping the word Islam from their name, they remain committed to advocating for gender
00:25equality and justice within Islamic family law.
00:28She expressed hope that SIS Forum's decision would put an end to a long-standing contention
00:33over its name and allow it to continue working in good faith with all parties.
00:37Sultan Sharifuddin said in a June 20 post on his official Facebook page that SIS should
00:42cease arbitrarily using the word Islam in its name or any of the company's publications,
00:47as this could confuse the Muslim community.
00:50This came after the federal court ruled that a fatwa could not be imposed on an organization
00:54like SIS, which could not profess a religion.
