In this video: If you want your spiritual sense of taste to be active, check out “Taste and See” to learn how your spiritual senses help you, taste, perceive and “see" spiritual things. This video will help you to exercise and grow your discernment as written in Hebrews 5:14.

Think about it for a moment…

Have you heard the verse Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! (Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!) and thought to yourself, “It is not like I can taste or see God?!”

And think…these are just idiomatic expressions! It’s beautiful poetry from the Ancient Near East, but meaningless to my walk with the Lord? I am happy to tell you, there’s so much more, and it is very meaningful to your growth in the Lord and for ministry as well!

Just as we have our 5 physical senses to help us discern the world around us, we also have at least 5 spiritual senses to help us navigate and discern spiritual things and the spiritual realm around us.

Spiritual senses?
Discerning spiritual things, you might ask?
Yes. You can discern spiritual things.

00:00Welcome to Marvel and Mysteries. My name is Tracy. Today's video is the second in a series
00:15about the spiritual senses. So you're going to want to back up and see See Through Scent if you
00:20haven't already. And then this video is Taste and See, because today we are learning about the
00:27spiritual sense of taste. And we have those five senses in the physical realm because it helps us
00:33navigate the world around us. But we also have our spiritual senses to do the same thing in the
00:40eternal realm that is around us to help us navigate, to help us to know what to do, make decisions, pray
00:47for other people. And the sense of taste is one that often gets overlooked. Natural man does not
00:54have the capacity to understand and to really experience the things of God. And so I want to
01:00read to you 1 Corinthians 2.14, the person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come
01:08from the Spirit of God because they consider them to be foolishness. It cannot understand them because
01:15they're discerned only through the Spirit. Let me read that again. The person without the Spirit does
01:21not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, but considers them foolishness and cannot
01:27understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. And we need the Spirit of God
01:36to be able to do just that. And then we'll be able to experience God for ourselves to help ourselves and
01:43to help other people. And 1 Corinthians 6.17 says,
01:46But the one united with the Lord is one Spirit with Him. And we have to remember that. We are
01:54united with Him. We're one Spirit with Him. And we are made in His image and likeness. We are being
02:00transformed into His complete image. And so we're going to continue to grow so that we can function
02:07like Him. And I don't know about your backstory, but mine growing up in church, there wasn't a whole lot
02:14that seemed to be happening, spiritually speaking, aside from the actual act of going to church and
02:21being there and being in worship and then leaving. And then it just didn't seem like there was much
02:27else that happened. Spiritually speaking, I didn't see anything like healings or prophecy or tongues
02:34interpretation, anything like that. That was just a void in the church that I grew up in.
02:39But when I stopped messing around in my life, I'll just be frank about it. When I stopped fooling
02:47around and trying to control everything and trying to figure out my own life and why nothing seemed to
02:53work, no self-help stuff seemed to work. When I stopped and I gave my life truly to the Lord Jesus
02:59Christ, everything changed. Things got weird pretty much immediately. And that is precisely when I started
03:07to experience the supernatural. And because of the war that was going on for my soul, just like it does
03:14for yours, the paranormal things too. So it got really weird really fast. And so I just made it my
03:21mission to really understand how the Lord speaks to us because it is not just one way that He speaks to
03:28us. And He can help and guide us through our spiritual senses, just like He gave us the senses in the
03:35natural. So that is my focus. And just as a quick recap for the senses that we have in the Spirit,
03:43I want to read to you Hebrews 5.14. It says,
03:46But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, those who by reason of use have their senses
03:55exercised to discern both good and evil. And senses in this usage is an organ of perception or an external
04:04sense. And so there's that connection between the things of the natural, the things of the Spirit,
04:10the things that are intangible, and the things that are tangible to us. And we have these expressions
04:15that we say all the time and we don't really think of them too much. We'll say that something or a person
04:21left a bad taste in our mouth. Or that something, maybe a particular activity or a food, is an acquired
04:29taste because it's not something that everybody would just naturally gravitate to. Or in some cases,
04:36when someone has sown a lot of yuck and then they reap it, people will say things like, oh, well,
04:42now they have tasted from their own medicine or they got a taste of their own medicine. So just ponder
04:49that for a second, that connection between the two. And then we have what our video is titled after
04:56today is Psalm 34 8, oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. And in this passage, when it's saying
05:05taste, it is the word for perceive. So it's you're perceiving and you're seeing that the Lord is good.
05:14And that connection, you're going to find that all through scripture between the Lord's goodness and
05:20taste, and it is everywhere. So I would encourage you actually to do a word search.
05:24And I love Job 12 11, does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food? So you know when
05:34something sounds off and you also know when something tastes funny. And it is part of the
05:41discernment that the Lord put inside of you and part of your natural function as a child of the Most
05:47High God. In other areas of scripture, there are references to taste and to eating. And you can
05:54think of a pile of them from the disciples being cooked food and eating food that was prepared and
06:00all the way through. But in Ezekiel 3, looking at Ezekiel 3 and John 10, we have these two occurrences
06:08when a prophet was given a scroll to eat. And in one case, it was sweet and then turned to bitter in
06:14the stomach. And then in the case of Ezekiel, you have him eating a scroll that was sweet like honey.
06:21And you'll see lots of references also to honey and honey's connection to revelation or to being
06:28revived. And in particular, with being revived and the sense of taste and even spiritual sense
06:36of taste. Think of Samuel 14 27, when Jonathan dipped his staff into some honey and it says that
06:44he ate it and it brightened his eyes. Now, for him, it was because that whole day,
06:52none of the army was eating because his father had put them under kind of like an oath that came with
06:58a curse that they wouldn't, I don't remember the exact curse, but there was a curse inferred if
07:04anyone was to partake of it. And so, poor Jonathan didn't hear what his father had said and went ahead
07:09and scoops them up and put it in his mouth. But later on, his men defended him and said,
07:15yeah, but like, look what he was able to do as a result of his eyes being, basically being
07:19brightened. And so, there again, is that connection to the spiritual of kind of he knew what to do,
07:27he had better guidance that day than the others did. And then actually the physical,
07:32the physical sense of taste. 1 Peter 2 2 says, like newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk
07:41so that by it, you may grow into your salvation now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
07:50And I want you to think of cookies or some kind of snack where it's just super easy that once you
07:57get a taste of one of them, you can eat the whole row like it's nothing. And this is the
08:02way that it really works with the Lord. When you taste, I love that verse because taste and see
08:09that the Lord is good. When you get a taste of who he is and how he is, then you want more. You crave
08:17him and you should crave him. So, if you haven't ever experienced that craving and that hunger for the
08:25Lord, then God, I'm asking right now that you would help my brother, help my sister with that right now.
08:32That they would know what it is to taste of your goodness and to be able to just stop and think
08:39and say, wow, he really is good. Like he's so good and you just want more of him. All right. In Jesus'
08:49name, amen. All right. So, the purpose again of the spiritual senses is to exercise your senses so that
08:58because of using them over and over and over again, you are able to discern that which is good
09:05and that which is evil. And a lot of times you've probably had this happen and you may have inadvertently
09:11disregarded it because we kind of have a tendency to. We are so driven on the scene and what is in front
09:18of us that we tend to forget about the things that are intangible or maybe that are unseen.
09:24And oftentimes we'll disregard things as, oh, that was just a function of this, that, or the other.
09:29Kind of like the people who will have the most amazing dreams, but they'll say, well, it was because
09:36I ate some weird food last night or I ate pizza and therefore, because I did that, I had these crazy
09:41dreams. We can discount things so easily when we really need to be valuing that which God does because
09:48he is desperately trying to train all of us. So, we should pay attention to what we are doing.
09:55So, one thing that I would pose the question to you is, have you ever been in a conversation with
10:03someone else or maybe somebody is telling you about a situation and you have that sense like,
10:11hmm, like something doesn't sound right, but you might actually get a bitter taste in your mouth.
10:18Or taste something like metal or just something off. You get a sour taste out of nowhere.
10:25That can be this spiritual sense of smell in operation. Now, yes, there are all kinds of medical
10:31conditions that can come with having a sweet taste, a bitter taste in your mouth, but I'm talking apart
10:38from that, have you had occurrences where that has happened? Or you might be praying for someone
10:46in church or elsewhere on the street and you might have a different taste and it might be a sweetness
10:51or something like that in your mouth and it actually directly relates to that individual.
10:57And it can be a word of knowledge to them. It can be something that if while you're praying,
11:03you say, oh, wow, you know, I'm tasting bubble gum or something, whatever it may be.
11:08And the person may say, well, yes, I love bubble gum. And it could just be a small word of knowledge
11:15that the Lord is using to confirm to the individual that he is present, he loves them,
11:21he's very aware of them, and that you, as the one who's praying, is actually hearing him.
11:27That can be one function. But if you want to go even deeper with something like this,
11:31just to give you an example, let's say you're praying for someone and all of a sudden you
11:38taste garlic. And this, you don't even have to be in person. Let's say you're just
11:42at home praying for a family member or something like that, and you start to taste garlic. And you
11:48think, well, what in the world? You know, there's not like an Italian restaurant connection. I'm just
11:54being funny, but there's not a connection there that would make you go, oh, okay, garlic. I clearly
12:00know what that means. That's something that you can ask the Lord about. Like, okay, when I was
12:05praying, this is what I started to taste. And he may show you something. If you go to Numbers 11,
12:12it talks about the Israelites being like, they've left Egypt, but now they're kind of like, wow,
12:19we missed the food. We miss, it lists off a bunch of things. Let me see if I can find it real quick.
12:26Uh, where was it? Numbers 11. I think we're, oh, verse five. We remember the fish we ate and ate in
12:35Egypt at no cost. Also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. So this could be a
12:44situation where the Lord is showing you that the individual is trying to harken back to a set of
12:49circumstances that wasn't good. They're trying to revisit the past or something like that.
12:55So it can be as, it can be very simple. It can be very detailed. And as you walk with the Lord,
13:01when this sense is trained, you will better know in your walk with the Lord, how he is speaking to you
13:08and what he might be saying and research that you can do in the word of God later. You'd be surprised
13:14the things that are tucked away in the word of God that you wouldn't ordinarily think of because
13:19they are smaller details, such as garlic, but you have to make sure that you spell it G-A-R-L-I-C-K.
13:27Otherwise you're not going to find anything, but this is just one example of a way in which it can work.
13:33And that is the way that it has functioned in my life in terms of being in prayer for someone.
13:38And then either it will be something that I might smell or see in the spirit. And in some case,
13:44it is taste. And that can dictate whatever season it is, or maybe a timing factor when something's
13:51going to happen. So I just encourage you to keep everything open, keep those senses open for the
13:59Lord's use. And that's what I do. I pray and I ask the Lord to sanctify all of the senses of my being.
14:07I basically lay those upon his altar and ask him to cleanse me completely and cleanse them completely
14:12so that I don't have other things that are coming in. Just as you would cleanse your imagination,
14:19because your imagination should be subject to the Lord, and you shouldn't be watching a bunch
14:25of things that are going to putrefy your imagination. It's the same thing. You have that pure vessel.
14:32So you want the same with your mouth as well. There are things that you probably shouldn't
14:38necessarily be eating, because that's going to throw everything off. If you think about it,
14:43what goes in, it can can be something that defiles. So be thinking about what it is that you're
14:50consuming. That is a word right there. Think about what you are tasting. What are you consuming?
14:58That is what comes up and out of you later. So just want to leave you with that word to the wise there
15:05and pray that Lord, you will help us to expand ourselves into the fullness of who you are through
15:13your teaching, through the word of God, through worship, through spending time with you, through
15:18listening, simply sitting and listening to you, Lord, and that we will be aware of our sense of
15:27taste, not only in the natural, but in the spirit, Lord. And we are asking for opportunities to practice.
15:36So Lord, I am asking on behalf of my brothers and sisters that you would give us the opportunity to
15:42practice that spiritual sense of taste, and that you would walk us through that so that we
15:48will be better equipped and better prepared for our friends, for our families, for the rest of the
15:53world, when we're evangelizing and when we're praying and ministering to people. So I thank you
15:59for that, and for everyone watching, in Jesus' name, amen. And please go and see, See Through Scent.
16:08If you've not had an opportunity, please watch it, because it will help you in the same way
16:13with taste, except for with your spiritual sense of smell. It is wonderful, it's helpful,
16:19and the Lord will expand you in that as well and just make you so stinking effective in prayer
16:26and just in your walk and in life in general. So go check that out. Thank you so much for watching
16:32again, and we will see you next time. Take care.
16:38Bye-bye.
