00:00A protest in central Bristol has led to the arrest of 17 people after police enforced a new ban on the group Palestine Action.
00:09The demonstration took place on College Green where a small group staged a sit-in displaying placards and chanting in support of Palestine's rights.
00:19Officers for Net Avon and Somerset Police moved in quickly.
00:23Protesters say that they were surrounded, their signs taken and many of them physically removed.
00:28Among those arrested were people as young as 22 and as old as 68.
00:34One protester, an 84-year-old woman named Gwen, was not arrested but had her placard confiscated and was told to report to a police station.
00:45The arrests were made under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act following the government's decision to formally ban Palestine Action earlier this month.
00:56Since July 5th, even displaying symbols or slogans associated with the group can be treated as a criminal offence, punishable by 14 years in prison.

01:12Police detained more than 100 people across England and Wales, including 55 in London, 16 in Manchester, 8 in Truro and 17 here in the city of Bristol.
01:23The government's move to label Palestine Action, a terrorist group, follows a series of high-profile protests, including damage caused to military aircrafts at the airbase in Oxfordshire.
