28 July - national forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00There are a fair few showers around today, but there are also a decent amount of bright, sunny breaks,
00:06and there's some drier weather nearby.
00:09There's high pressure to the southwest of us, an Azores High that's been trying to build,
00:13but it's not going to fully extend across us.
00:16As a result, it will allow for some various frontal systems to topple over the north of this,
00:21and this is going to bring some cloud and some rain later on.
00:24But for the time being, like I said, through this afternoon, a few showers for quite a few places.
00:28Some of them could be a little bit on the heavy side, but most are going to be relatively light and quite short-lived,
00:33so most of us are actually going to avoid many of them as well.
00:37And in between the showers and away from them, there will be some bright or sunny spells.
00:41Not wall-to-wall sunshine for most of us, but some sunshine breaking through at times,
00:46and in that sunshine should feel relatively warm.
00:49Temperatures peaking in the mid-20s towards the south, a few degrees lower than this further north,
00:53but nonetheless, even parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland should get into the low 20s.
00:58Most of today's showers are going to fizzle out and clear away towards the east as we go through this evening,
01:03so turning dry for many to start the night, but then that frontal system I highlighted at the start,
01:08that comes in from the west, and so that's going to bring a lot of cloud
01:11and some persistent rain across parts of Northern Ireland initially,
01:15and then feeding into western parts of Scotland, England and Wales.
01:18Further east, clinging on to some drier, clearer weather through much of the night,
01:22and here it could turn a little fresh, maybe even into single figures across some places,
01:27but further west, where that front comes in, it's going to be quite cloudy,
01:30it's going to be quite warm and also quite humid as well, with the damp weather too.
01:35Then as we go through tomorrow, west-east split to start off with,
01:37drier, brighter towards the east, wetter in the west,
01:40but that whole frontal system is making its way south-eastward,
01:43so even east and south-eastern parts will quite quickly turn cloudy,
01:46and some outbreaks of rain arriving here.
01:49The band of rain due to the front is actually going to break up,
01:52fragment as we go through the day, and turn more showery in nature
01:55as it pushes across central-southern parts of England,
01:59and as it does so, we could see some more intense bursts developing,
02:03so some heavier showers look quite likely across central-southern parts in particular,
02:07maybe into the Midlands as well, and the odd rumble of thunder can't be ruled out.
02:12The greatest chance of staying dry tomorrow will be across north-eastern parts,
02:16eastern and north-eastern Scotland, Orkney Shetland having a largely fine day,
02:21elsewhere quite cloudy for many of us, and most of us will see a bit of rain at times,
02:25albeit towards the south-west, turning drier as we go into the afternoon,
02:29and some brighter breaks quite likely here.
02:31Where you do get the sunshine, unsurprisingly, it's going to feel relatively warm,
02:35temperatures again in the low 20s, even low 20s again across parts of Scotland,
02:39but if you're stuck under the cloud because of that front,
02:42temperatures will be pegged back just a few degrees,
02:44so feeling a little bit fresher perhaps than some recent days.
02:48Then as we go later on tomorrow, we are going to see some more showery rain,
02:52and that kind of takes us through the end of the week really, a changeable theme.
02:56There will be some drier periods, but also some slightly wetter ones.
03:00I think towards the end of the week, Thursday, maybe into Friday,
03:03that's when we have the greatest risk of some thunder.
03:05And all the time, worth bearing in mind, while it's warm, it is summer after all,
03:10and if you catch any of that sunshine, it should feel very warm indeed,
03:13but also quite humid as well.
