Bryan Mbeumo was left out of the Manchester United squad entirely for the first match of their US pre-season tour. United defeated West Ham 2-1 in the early hours of Sunday morning thanks to a brace from club captain Bruno Fernandes.
There was plenty of excitement ahead of the match over summer signing Mbeumo, but he was not even named on the bench for the clash at the MetLife Stadium. The 25-year-old officially completed his move to Old Trafford earlier in the week for an initial fee of £65 million plus a further £6m in add-ons. The Cameroon international has signed a contract until June 2030, with the option to extend for a further year.
Mbeumo trained with his new teammates once in Manchester before they embarked on their pre-season schedule, and has been part of the group sessions in the US this week. However, the match against West Ham came too soon for him to be thrown into action for his new club.
00:00Manchester United had to wait a while to sign Brian Umbermo and United fans will have to wait even longer before they get to see him in action.
00:08The new summer signing was not involved as Manchester United began their US pre-season tour with a 2-1 win over West Ham in the Premier League summer series.
00:17Bruno Fernandes played as an attacking midfielder alongside Matthias Cunha in New Jersey and the club captain bagged a brace,
00:25an early penalty and a calm finish from outside the box before Jared Bowen pulled one back for West Ham United 1-2-1 in the early hours of Sunday morning.
00:35Umbermo travelled with the squad to the MetLife Stadium but was not involved in the match.
00:39United sources said that this was due to the fact that he's just not had as long a pre-season as the rest of his United teammates
00:46and Umbermo of course was not involved in Brentford's pre-season preparation before he signed for Manchester United.
00:53So he's had a week training with his new teammates but he's not deemed match fit yet.
00:58The other news, Ruben Amarin said he's not expecting him to be involved when United face Bournemouth in midweek either.
01:05So the new summer signing from Brentford could feature in the final pre-season match against Everton next weekend.
01:12United then face Fiorentina at Old Trafford on the 9th of August before of course they start the new Premier League campaign
01:18against Arsenal in mid-August at Old Trafford.
01:22And yeah, maybe that's a hint that Umbermo won't be part of the United starting line-up for the first few weeks of the season.
01:29At best he will have played against Everton and Fiorentina.
01:32Whether that is enough for him to then be involved against Arsenal remains to be seen.
01:36Umbermo is viewed as a key part of United's plans for the new campaign.
01:40But Ruben Amarin just does not want to take any unnecessary risks at this stage of the summer schedule.
01:46So the headline news is Umbermo is a United player.
01:49But you're going to have to wait at least another week before you get to see him in action.
