00:00We went into the whole experience kind of knowing this would either end in divorce or we would be
00:03more codependent than ever. So most intimately we've ever worked together all day, every day
00:09on screen together. We could not have made this movie with anyone else. There are very, very
00:14intimate scenes, things that we've never even done off camera. So enjoy that.
00:19How are we today? We're diving in together. We're doing great. Very different tone than the film's
00:31tone. So I'm enjoying the jubilance. Now, I was just saying to you guys, I've avoided all footage
00:36because the buzz around this movie has been one of the longest runs, I think, since A Quiet Place
00:40of staying at a fever pitch hype. My friend Perry has raved about it, about you guys. Oh, we love
00:44Perry, Collider. Perry, we love you. Perry and I have worked together for a decade and
00:49she has been raving about this. I love Perry. But I've been wondering for your experience
00:53with the marketing being so specific and so weird, what's been your favorite surprise in
00:57how this has taken on a life of its own over the year? Oh, wow. What do you guys think?
01:01Favorite surprise is like, we always knew that like hardcore horror fans would love this thing.
01:07You know, we really push the limits. There's great body horror. There's all the good stuff
01:12there. But like the surprise has been that people are also calling it a gateway horror
01:17movie. And so like people who wouldn't typically seek out this type of movie, they're really
01:21loving it. And I think it's because, yes, it's a horror movie, but it's also romantic and
01:25it's sweet and it's funny. And there's just a little something for everyone.
01:29I feel that with the limited experience and I'm loving that I'm avoiding it and going like,
01:33I'm so scared to love this. Just feel the vibes without seeing the actual content.
01:38That's always what marketing should be, which I think you guys are doing.
01:41Yeah. Oh, Neon is great at nailing the vibes.
01:44The best at what they do.
01:45Yeah.
01:46And your experience with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score that is stated 100%, what's that pride
01:51even feel like?
01:52I mean, it's absolutely insane. Like at every single step, just making the film was like
01:56a dream come true. Getting it into Sunnets was a dream come true. Selling the Neon was a dream
01:58come true. And now we're at 100% Rotten Tomatoes. It's just like, what is going on?
02:02Like tomatoes.
02:03Yeah.
02:04Tomatoes.
02:05And I've heard things like Cronenberg. I've felt vibes like the substance and we're getting
02:12all these classic horror tropes. But on the other side, I feel like with comedy, there's
02:16such an inclination to use those skills in a darker way. And I feel like timing and comedy
02:20and the way that you have to navigate improv feels like it would lend itself to horror.
02:24And I consider community the most authentic nerd experience of my media life that I think
02:30is.
02:30I concur.
02:31Like that's what it actually feels like to be a nerd. And there's some real like Hail
02:35Marys in your career that I think you've hit some master strokes of comedy, Jump Street,
02:38et cetera, as like a life moment. So did you use those skills in like a darker way? Did it
02:43feel like improv? Did it feel like those same pace moments?
02:46You know, I wouldn't say it didn't feel like improv because all of the comedy or comedic moments
02:51in this movie were in the script. And they're really situational. I think what was helpful
02:57is that because Dave and I have a background in comedy, there's an innate ability to kind
03:02of be aware of that tone without hitting it over the head, playing into it. For us, it
03:07was all about playing the stakes of every moment in a horror movie and knowing that the comedy
03:13would come through because of the writing.
03:15There's also just like nice little bickering moments between us in the movie that people
03:21who have been in long-term relationships can definitely relate to. Like, you know, the
03:24characters without giving anything away, but the characters are in certain situations where
03:28it's like the craziest shit is happening to them. And they're still like, you know, her
03:32character's like, why do you have a lighter? And I'm like, that doesn't fucking matter.
03:36Our bodies are fusing together.
03:38The least of our concerns is this one. And that's relationship.
03:41And that is what the movie's about, you know?
03:44So I love when couples that work in similar fields can work together. And I love when you can
03:48actually use that as an ability to bring you closer together. Do you find that a movie like
03:54together brought you closer together? And did you find that directing people that are so close
03:59together, did you feel like a synchronicity or was it like alarming that there was no going home
04:04at the end of the day?
04:06I mean, I definitely felt like it brought us closer together. The cool thing is that Dave,
04:11this is our fifth project that we've worked on together. So we've had time to ramp up into this.
04:16We couldn't have pulled the Band-Aid into together. We needed four movies to lead up to it.

04:47Yeah. And how did it feel for you, Shanks?
04:49I mean, it felt great. Like, honestly, these guys are just so, there's such pros, but just
04:54seeing you on camera together, you have this emotional history from your real relationship.
04:58It just kind of elevated what were already great performances. This is sort of meta reality
05:03to the whole thing, which was great. And my relationship's going great.
05:06Shanks has been in a relationship for 16 years.

05:11Wow. Incredible. Now, my last question for you guys, you had a big press day, but I love
05:15that you're all venturing into other things, writing, producing Horse Girl, directing, and
05:19the experiences from that. And seeing your growth as an actor has been so wonderful for each of
05:23you. I really have loved both your careers.
05:25Thanks, man.
05:25And I mean, now 17 years, I've got a new anecdote for you.
05:28Exactly.
05:28But the experience of this film, it feels like it's a launching point for other things.
05:33Did you learn anything from him as a director? Did you find anything?
05:35And making this with him that you want to evolve in your next project?
05:38Oh, wow. I mean, just the innovation of it all, I found incredibly inspiring.
05:44You know, I had never read a script like this before. The things that we're doing in this
05:48movie I'd never seen on screen before. The way that Michael Shanks was so prepared, but
05:53then handled it all with a light touch. We were having so much fun on set every day.
05:58I hope that I can bring all of those qualities to the next thing that I want to do.
06:02Shanks is the most confident first time director ever. To this day, we've still never seen
06:08him stressed. We're almost like waiting for it and wanting it. We thought it was going
06:12to be the breakdown is coming.
06:13It's been building up. But I don't know. I just really respect his energy on set. He really came
06:23in with this, like, almost kid-like enthusiasm that was so infectious. And it made us all just want
06:28to give everything for this movie just to help him achieve his vision.
06:32Thank you, guys. And same back with these two, honestly. Like, being on set, it was my first film. I was nervous
06:38about it. And just from day one, we had, you know, crew on set that have been working in the industry
06:45for 40 years, just old, grizzled people that move around lights, just coming up to me and saying,
06:49these are the nicest actors we've ever worked with. And it was so true. So it was a great time on set. It was so much fun.
06:55And thank you for giving me some credit for that. But it was all you guys, honestly.
06:59We were a great team. It really was a true collaboration here. And we had a blast.
07:03And the sense of play translates here. And I think that's 100% Rotten Tomatoes. It's translating to audiences.
07:07And I think even with darkness, like this film seems to be, that's important to enjoy the experience.
07:11So I'm so glad to hear it, too. I will say, I think it's maybe the first ever feel-good body horror movie.

08:04I feel like if you wanted, I bet Neon could maybe throw a together-themed wedding for you.
08:12I bet that's something they would do.
08:14It would save some planning.
08:16And it might end in divorce or a great wedding.
