00:00What I wanted to expose was the danger of extremism, a society where awful things can
00:06happen. Obviously, the most important thing I wanted to do was make my fans laugh really hard
00:12and really often. Hi, my name is Sacha Baron Cohen and we're here on the set of my Hollywood
00:18Reporter cover sheet. It's fine. It's fine. It's fine. Come on. Seth and Evan, the story with them
00:26was it was the first Ali G show. They came in with an idea for instead of Girls Gone Wild,
00:34it was Boys Gone Wild for Bruno. I said, OK, you're hired, but I've only got enough money
00:38for one writer. So unless you want to share a hotel room and share a bed and share a wage,
00:45you know, I can only hire one of you and it's going to be Seth. They came back and they
00:48said,
00:49we'll split the wage. And basically they would write in a double bed in the best Western hotel
00:54we were in. They had beers all around them. They were smoking and they would shoot right
00:59in bed.
01:00F*** up. I'm Bruno.
01:02When I employed Jonah Hill, he's such an incredible performer. It was on the movie Bruno that his
01:09version of Bruno was just far better than my version of Bruno. And when I started performing
01:14Bruno, I realized I was performing his version of Bruno. And it took me about a week to realize
01:21that the best thing I should do was watch the Ali G show and watch how I used to do
01:24Bruno.
01:25So my performance completely changed.
01:27We grade the jokes. And in the edit, what we're trying to do is to heighten the jokes.
01:35She thinks she's preggers. Could you please just tell her that it's probably wind or a big
01:39pool?
01:39I'm going to give you an example. Borat. For those of you who've seen it, there's a scene
01:43where Borat ends up at a Jewish bed and breakfast. He's hungry. He eats some food. And the Jewish bed
01:50and breakfast owners tells him that it's kosher, at which point Borat spits out the food.
01:55We play this joke to two screenings of 300 people. There's no laughter. So my editor is chopping out
02:05this joke. And I said, hold on. It's funny. He goes, it's not funny. I said, I believe that this
02:10is funny. And there's a mistake in there. So we go frame by frame. And I find that there is
02:16a sound
02:17effect two frames before the spit that an editor had put on. I took the sound effect and I put
02:24it
02:24on top of the spit and I doubled it up. There's this picture over here.
02:29Okay.
02:30We played it. And from having no laughter, it suddenly got a full laugh.
02:36There was a scene where I was about to do the scene and we had a cop. He had his
02:42gun on his thigh.
02:44And I said, why is your gun on your thigh? He goes, well, you know, I need to be really
02:48fast to pull
02:50in, to draw in this area. And I said, well, how close are you to me? And he said, I'll
02:55be with
02:55you within three minutes. And I realized that was not a good thing to do. So I pulled that scene.
03:02I will never do a scene if I think I'm actually going to die.
03:08Michael Penis, I brought the girl for you.
03:11So Borat 2, I felt was an important film to be made. And so there was a scene at a
03:17gun rights rally
03:18that I knew there was a risk of getting shot. And so I did wear a bulletproof vest. And then
03:25actually we built an amplifier for thicker or bigger caliber bullets that I could run behind.
03:32Well, my idea is to come out with just like these ice cream gloves that make the ice cream not
03:39go on
03:39your hands and make it all well sticky.
03:41I mean, he was a really interesting interviewee because generally the interviewees were completely
03:49punctual. I was waiting in a room. I could hear him on the other room in his office shouting,
03:55get me the mail on the phone. It's Giuliani. And then I hear him screaming at Giuliani.
04:00And it was intimidating, actually. He comes in and he was intimidated. And he met the director,
04:07a guy called James Bobin, who's this very handsome, blonde, very eloquent, Oxford-educated gentleman.
04:15Mr. Trump believed that that would be the interviewer. And then he said, no, actually,
04:19this is the interviewer. He looks down at me and his face dropped. And he really didn't want to be
04:24in
04:24the room.
