00:00We both come from what is from the outside view of these cults, SNL and UConn.
00:04It's a neat thing.
00:05I felt like looking back at my time because it teaches you to work hard, probably harder
00:11than you thought you needed to.
00:12It is the hardest job I ever had.
00:14I was there 10 years, two years as a writer, eight years.
00:16So even though I was older, it was 250% longer, you know?
00:21But I would not be where I am without it.
00:23How did that happen?
00:24How does that start?
00:24How did I get to do it?
00:25Yeah.
00:25I mean, I can use the journey of a blue chip athlete on the way in.
00:28And it's like, instead of it being an AAU team or a high school team, there's different
00:32places that they come and scout.
00:35The Groundlings in Los Angeles, that's like where Will Ferrell started or Kristen Wiig.
00:39UCB here in New York, that's like Amy Poehler.
00:41But then I did a thing called Second City in Chicago.
00:43I was on their JV team, the touring company.
00:46I understudied.
00:47And then I eventually did Second City in Las Vegas.
00:50And when I was there, a fellow named Jeff Richmond, it was like, hey, would you ever want to audition
00:53for SNL?
00:54And at that point, I was like, no way, Jose.
00:56I don't like that show.
00:57I don't care about that show.
00:58I don't care about any of that.
00:59It was mostly me being like 22-year-old dickhead that was like, oh, I don't want something
01:03that would never want me.
01:04Yeah.
01:04And then when it's kind of like, oh, but you could do it, and someone outside of yourself
01:07sort of says, oh, you could do it, then it's kind of like, really?
01:09Okay.
01:10And so then I auditioned for it in like 2003 and got hired as a writer.
01:14So it's like basically, and then I wrote for one year and then another year, so it was
01:17like I was redshirted.
01:18So I got to learn the system.
01:19Okay.
01:19And I just sort of get to learn how the show worked from behind the scenes, but still
01:23in a very high pressure situation, that writing for the show.
01:25So.
01:26So.
