Leeds reflects on older people and technology

Do you think the older generation is being left behind by modern technology? Is it making life harder or cutting them off from parts of society?

00:00Some older people are good at technology, like my nan, but my grandad is absolutely terrible at it,

00:04and I don't think it's sometimes fair when you actually have to order food on a menu via phone,

00:10when it's my grandad, and he can't do it, but my nan can, so it depends on the person, really, doesn't it?

00:15I think, yeah, tech is leaving a lot of the elderly behind that's not actually got the same tech interactions with all younger people.

00:22Like, my mum, if I get, she couldn't do internet banking, so I had to do all that.

00:25Watching my dad use, like, his phone, or, like, saying to me, like, oh, what's a TikTok? I'm like, oh.

00:31So sometimes you just, it's just kind of how the world works, I guess.

00:35Actually, the older generation I know seem to have embraced tech, and they're really, probably better at it than I am.

00:40That old cliche of don't give dad the TV remote control, I'm not sure that exists anymore.

00:46My parents, certainly, they're all over the smartphones, they're all over socials, they're loving it.

00:51Maybe their memory will be, like, deteriorate, but it's very good for them to, like, to embrace the new technology.
