00:04The Thames Barrier is one of the world's largest moveable flood defences, protecting
00:08London from tidal surges. Built in 1982, it spans over 500 metres across the River Thames
00:16near Woolwich. It consists of 10 steel gates, each weighing over 3,000 tonnes each. These
00:23gates usually lie flat on the riverbed, allowing ships to pass. But when a high tide or storm
00:30surge threatens, the gates are raised to form a barrier, blocking floodwaters from flowing
00:36into central London. It's closed several times a year, especially during winter and
00:41can hold back a surge as high as 5 metres. With rising sea levels due to climate change,
00:47the Thames Barrier is a critical line of defence. It's expected to protect London until at least
00:5220, 70.
