00:00Today, July 17, the Church pays tribute to a little-known but moving figure,
00:11Saint Charlotte of the Resurrection, Carmelite, martyr during the French Revolution.
00:18Born in 1715 under the name of Anne-Marie Madeleine Touré,
00:22She entered the Carmel of Compiègne, in the Oise, at a very young age.
00:26There she took the name Sister Charlotte of the Resurrection.
00:32A woman of character, firm and devoted, she became in turn a nurse, cook, then prior of the convent.
00:41She faithfully lived the rule of Carmel, in silent prayer, poverty and total abandonment to God.
00:50But in 1790, the Revolution turned everything upside down.
00:55Religious orders are abolished, convents closed, vows forbidden.
01:01Refusing to deny their faith and commitment,
01:05The 16 Carmelites of Compiègne continue to live in community, in secret.
01:11In 1794, they were arrested.
01:14Their crime? Having maintained fanatical habits and wearing religious clothes.
01:20They were transferred to Paris, tried quickly and sentenced to death.
01:26On July 17, 1794, on the Place du Trône Invers, now Place de la Nation,
01:36They go up to the scaffold one by one.
01:39They sing psalms, the Veni Creator, then the Salve Regina.
01:45Sister Charlotte, the oldest, 79 years old, is the last.
01:50Weak, supported by a sister, she slowly climbs the steps, straight, without fear.
01:59She offers her life for peace in France, like all the others.
02:04That day, silence falls over the crowd.
02:08This peaceful and luminous martyr leaves a lasting impression.
02:11A few days later, the terror ended.
02:16Robespierre is executed.
02:19In 1906, the Carmelites of Compiègne were beatified by Pope Pidis.
02:25And today, Sister Charlotte is celebrated as a symbol of fidelity,
02:31of peace and forgiveness in the face of hatred.
02:41Saint Charlotte of the Resurrection, pray for us, for peace and for the persecuted of today.
