From leftover scraps to used tea bags from this September thousands,
00:05
all Liverpool households will be asked to think twice for tossing food waste in the bin.
00:10
Liverpool City Council is rolling out weekly food waste collections
00:13
to around 15,000 homes across 15 wards, including Chilwall, Garston and West Arby.
00:20
The scheme is part of efforts to tackle one of the city's biggest waste problems, food.
00:25
A third of all rubbish in purple bins could actually be recycled.
00:28
Homes included in the initial rollout will receive a kit next month,
00:32
a small indoor caddy, a larger outdoor bin and an odour-proof liner.
00:37
The collections start on Monday the 22nd of September
00:41
and will happen on the same day as regular bin days with no changes to current schedules.
00:46
Once collected, the food waste will be recycled through a process called anaerobic digestion,
00:51
breaking down the waste to create biogas that can power homes and vehicles
00:55
and a nutrient-rich compost for agriculture too.
00:59
The outdoor bins are pest-proof, meaning no seagulls or rats getting in, hopefully.
01:04
And the council says this new service won't just cut waste, it could also cut emissions too.
01:09
Currently, Liverpool has one of the lowest recycling rates in the UK, just under 18%.
01:15
Council at Law Robertson Collins says the scheme is a step toward changing that
01:19
and tackling climate change at a local level.
01:22
The service will be rolled out citywide in phases,
01:24
giving the council time to test routes, vehicle capacity and public engagement.
01:30
For those taking part, it is a simple change,
01:33
but one the council hopes will make a big difference.
01:36
And with food waste now being put to work instead of going up in smoke,
01:41
the city's leftovers could finally be going green.
