01:11this story is about snakes and two men
01:15one man was afraid of snakes and the other wasn't
01:19the one who wasn't was known along cashier creek as snake doctor
01:23his cabin was near the creek bottom land where there's a powerful lot of cotton mouths
01:29and he earned his meager living by rendering down their soft fats
01:34bottling the oil and selling it
01:37but everyone knew there was no remedy for rheumatism like snake oil
01:41snake doctor was harmless enough
01:44but there were folks who honestly believed that he was a colleague of beelzebub
01:49just because he wasn't afraid of snakes
01:52and that's not all they believed about him
02:04now uh the man who was afraid of snakes was jave mourner who was snake doctor's nearest neighbor
02:11jave was the kind of man we all know
02:14who suspected feared and hated anything he didn't understand
02:19and he understood neither cotton mouths nor the snake doctor
02:24in short jave was honor ignorant and shiftless
02:28he'd rather shoot squirrels and chop cotton
02:31he'd rather fish than hoe corn
02:33and that's just what he's doing now

03:50jake watched as the eddy caught the stick and sucked it beneath the dam

03:56he moved downstream a rod or two and waited
04:00watching the water boil up from under the driftwood
