00:00In most towns across the country, the 4th of July signifies the real start of summer.
00:04There's barbecues and fireworks, and of course, the much-anticipated local parade.
00:09And it's always fun to spot the neighborhood children riding proudly in the procession
00:13on their bicycles, decorated festively in red, white, and blue.
00:17And today, I have two neighborhood boys.
00:19This is Robert, and this is Brendan Rotans.
00:22How you doing?
00:23Good.
00:24Good.
00:24And we're going to show you how to simply decorate bicycles
00:28so that they're fit for the parade.
00:30Now, this is real easy.
00:31You've done the spokes before, right?
00:33Yeah.
00:33Okay, so why don't we start doing the spokes.
00:36And it's just taking ordinary crepe paper.
00:39You want to start with the white?
00:42And running the crepe paper in and out of the spokes.
00:45Crate paper's available at the local craft store or stationary store.
00:51You want to put the glue on?
00:55Aren't they great, those glue sticks?
00:56Because you don't want any loose ends while you're riding your bike.
01:02Here, you can roll this through the spokes.
01:05So start down as close to the center of the wheel as possible.
01:09You can start right in this notch here.
01:11That would be good.
01:12And use your glue stick.
01:13And you're going in and out.
01:15And here, make sure you pull it a little tighter,
01:18keeping it as wide as possible.
01:21There, that's good.
01:22You're doing great.
01:23And it's nice to keep this rolled up
01:28because then you don't have...
01:31See how I'm weaving it in and out of the spokes?
01:35See how I'm doing it?
01:37There.
01:38Okay, so you can cut that
01:39right there.
01:42So I have a good pair of scissors on hand.
01:46More glue, please.
01:48We'll put glue right there.
01:54Now you can start with what next color.
01:56Do you want to use red?
01:58There's the red.
02:01Now you're very adept at this.
02:03And we have streamers for the handlebars.
02:06We have flags for the basket.
02:09Let me show you this really cute basket, too.
02:13There's so many wonderful patriotic kinds of things.
02:17These are little individual flags
02:19sewn on a piece of seam binding.
02:21Now you could wear this on your head,
02:25but then you wouldn't be able to see.
02:27But it's sort of cute to put it right on the basket.
02:31You can just tie it on
02:33and then take it off
02:34when the 4th of July is over
02:35and save it for next year.
02:37And to make the handlebar streamers,
02:40just take a lot of colored seam binding
02:43or inexpensive ribbon,
02:45cut lengths about 30 inches long,
02:47and you can get these
02:48little ties at the hardware store.
02:54These will hold the ribbons tightly in place
02:57and just pull it on.
03:00And then this long point
03:02will fit right into the little hole
03:04in the handlebars.
03:05We'll show you that as soon
03:07as the boys are done with their crate paper.
03:09Now who needs help?
03:10Okay, so I'll lift the bike
03:28and you remove that
03:29and we're going to turn it over
03:30so we can get the handlebars all decorated.
03:33And I'll do the basket.
03:37So just stick that plastic tie
03:40right really deep into the handle
03:42and the basket can go right here
03:45on the handlebars.
03:49It's starting to look festive,
03:50don't you think?
03:51Yep.
03:52Martha, have you ever ridden a bike
03:54in a parade?
03:56What do you think?
03:57Yes.
03:58Yes, of course I have.
04:00This is the most fun
04:01on the 4th of July
04:02but I think it actually
04:03was Memorial Day
04:05because in Nutley
04:05we didn't have a 4th of July party
04:07we had a Memorial Day parade.
04:09So here, this is going to go on like here.
04:14I'll put that right here.
04:16Put the screw in.
04:19Okay, I want to screw that in real tight.
04:21Your dad must be very proud of you
04:25that you can know how to use tools so well
04:27and that you're such great decorators.
04:30Your mom must be very proud
04:31as tight as you can.
04:33The bell works really well.
04:35Now, use that if you need to
04:36to get people out of the way, okay?
04:39Well, whether your parade is down Main Street
04:41or just on your block
04:43you're sure to be a hit
04:44with bikes decorated like these.
04:47Brendan, thank you.
04:48Robert, thank you.
04:49Welcome.
04:49Have a great time.
04:52This is the basic cookie.
04:54It's the size and shape
04:56of a 3x5 card.
05:00Very, very easy.
05:01An index card.
05:03Remember that.
05:04And the recipe is on the website
05:05at marthastewart.com.
05:07And now we're going to just show you really
05:09because it's a simple sugar cookie recipe
05:11how to decorate it
05:12which is a little bit more complicated.
05:15You're first going to need
05:17to make a royal icing
05:19and we're going to need
05:20four bowls
05:21one for the blue
05:22then you're going to need
05:24three other bowls
05:25one that's going to remain white
05:27and this one will be
05:29for outlining
05:30using a pastry bag and tip.
05:32This will also be used
05:33for the stars.
05:35Notice the consistency.
05:36It's a little bit thick
05:37and this is for doing
05:38and this is for doing
05:38your outlining
05:39and we have our bag
05:41fitted with
05:42a number five
05:44round tip
05:45plain round.
05:47And we'll just put this
05:49right into
05:49the pastry bag.
05:52Now this is for the
05:55outlining.
05:56Remember it is
05:57a thick consistency.
05:58Flooding
05:59which means
05:59filling in an outline
06:01will be
06:02a much
06:02looser
06:03icing.
06:04And I like to stand
06:05our icing bags
06:07fitted with a tip
06:08right into
06:09a tall glass.
06:10I have a piece
06:11of damp paper towel
06:12that will keep
06:13the tip
06:14from
06:15getting
06:15hard.
06:17And now
06:17we have to
06:18make our red.
06:20I'm going to use
06:21a combination
06:21of super red
06:22and tulip red.
06:25Two different
06:26paste colors.
06:28We're just going to
06:28add
06:28a little bit
06:30to our
06:31royal icing.
06:34To make reds,
06:35to make the dark
06:36colors,
06:37you start light
06:38and you work
06:38towards your
06:39final color.
06:42It uses up a lot
06:43to get to
06:44a deep
06:44beautiful
06:45flag red.
06:47Now this is going
06:48to have to be
06:48thinned out
06:49because we are
06:50going to
06:51use this
06:52for flooding.
06:53So add
06:54about
06:54two to three
06:55teaspoons
06:56of cold
06:57water
06:58to thin
06:58out
06:59one quarter
07:00of the recipe
07:01of royal
07:02icing.
07:03And a great
07:04tip that
07:04Larry Hayden
07:05gave us
07:06was the
07:07very clever
07:08maneuverability
07:10of these
07:11little
07:12squeeze bottles.
07:15These squeeze
07:15bottles are
07:16available at
07:17cake decorating
07:18stores.
07:20Screw this
07:25on carefully.
07:27And so we're
07:27ready now
07:28with our
07:29red,
07:30our blue,
07:31and our
07:32white.
07:33And remember
07:34now we're going
07:34to outline
07:35with our
07:36outline
07:37consistency
07:38frosting.
07:39Here's what we
07:40want the outline
07:40to look like.
07:42What this
07:43little piping
07:44does is hold
07:46the flooding
07:47icing in
07:48place,
07:49giving a
07:49very beautiful
07:50and even
07:51appearance to
07:52the cookie
07:53decoration.
07:54And now
07:54divide the
07:55cookie in
07:55half.
07:59And this
08:00will be our
08:01field of
08:01blue.
08:02And then we're
08:03going to need
08:04lines in here
08:05giving us
08:05stripes.
08:07That looks
08:08good.
08:09And we let
08:09that dry
08:10completely.
08:11And you can
08:12see what
08:12flooding is
08:13all about.
08:15Just hold
08:16this right
08:17over the
08:18cookie.
08:19And you
08:19see how
08:19nicely it
08:20pours out
08:21of this
08:21bottle?
08:22It is so
08:23much easier
08:24than using
08:25the flooding
08:26icing in a
08:27pastry bag,
08:28which can get
08:28quite messy.
08:30And what's
08:31nice about
08:31flooding icing
08:32is that it
08:33really does
08:34flood an
08:34area and
08:35fill an
08:36entire
08:37space.
08:40And now
08:41you can
08:41use the
08:43point of
08:43a bamboo
08:44skewer
08:44to just
08:45let it
08:46cover the
08:47white outline.
08:48This has
08:49to dry
08:49completely
08:49before you
08:50apply any
08:51number of
08:52stars.
08:54So there's
08:54our blue
08:55ground.
08:56And now
08:56we're going
08:56to start
08:57with our
08:57stripes.
08:58Fill in
08:59the entire
09:00stripe area.
09:02It's a
09:02good idea
09:03to let
09:03this
09:04completely
09:05dry before
09:05you apply
09:06the red.
09:07So we
09:07have some
09:07dry ones
09:08right here.
09:11And keep
09:12your little
09:12bottles
09:14covered so
09:15they don't
09:15dry out.
09:16And here
09:17we'll just
09:17flood
09:18the red
09:21stripes.
09:22And now
09:23take your
09:24pastry bag
09:25and fit
09:25the tip
09:26with a
09:27star.
09:28And this
09:28is a
09:29number
09:2916.
09:32And there
09:32make sure
09:32you let
09:33that dry.
09:34Don't be
09:35tempted to
09:36pick it up
09:36and look
09:37at it.
09:37Let it
09:37stay flat.
09:38And when
09:39it dries
09:39you'll have
09:41a patriotic
09:42very pretty
09:43cookie of the
09:44week.
09:44Our flag
09:45cookie.
09:46Everybody
09:46loves a
09:47parade
09:47especially
09:48children.
09:49And I
09:50thought I
09:50had escaped
09:50the patriotic
09:51urges of my
09:52style department
09:53here but
09:54they came up
09:55with parade
09:55hats.
09:56Especially
09:56nice for
09:57children.
09:58To make
09:58these hats
09:59you'll need
09:59some corrugated
10:00paper.
10:00This is
10:01called
10:02mini flute
10:03coro buff
10:04roll.
10:04It's $5.95
10:05and you can
10:06make about
10:06six wonderful
10:07hats.
10:08You can
10:08also get
10:08some sheets
10:09of corrugated
10:10paper.
10:11A little
10:11bit different
10:12fluting.
10:13And there's
10:13even a
10:14larger
10:14fluting
10:15used for
10:16the rosettes
10:17about $5.95
10:18for 12
10:18sheets.
10:19For the
10:20basic hat
10:21you'll need
10:21a strip
10:22about 24
10:23inches long
10:24by 7
10:25inches high.
10:26And the
10:27corrugated
10:28stripes run
10:28vertically.
10:29So here
10:30is our
10:31strip
10:31already
10:32set.
10:33Mark
10:33three
10:33holes
