00:00well things certainly hotting up here there's no doubt about it as we speak there are four more
00:07small boats in the English Channel attempting to make it to UK waters making slow progress and
00:13that's probably because they are weighed down with migrants the boats that we saw coming in here
00:21yesterday had more than 70 migrants per boat just under 600 migrants in total came across
00:30yesterday and that has pushed the number of migrants who crossed the Channel so far this year
00:36to 20,000 to more than 19,000 and we may now hit that 20,000 figure by sometime on Tuesday with the
00:47the way things are going and that would be very significant because actually for the whole of
00:52last year the total was 36,000 which was of course bad enough but we're already at 20,000 we're not
01:00even into the supposed hottest flattest calm months of the year which come obviously in July August
01:08September even into October where very significant numbers of migrants will cross so there is
01:16no doubt this is a very significant crisis that the Prime Minister is grappling with we know that
01:23the French President Emmanuel Macron will be in London next week for his state visit at which we're
01:31expected the government to announce this new deal with the French that would be some sort of a returns
01:38deal the exact detail of it we still really have to learn but it's supposedly a one-in-one-out policy
01:46critics saying that how on earth is that a deterrent when you're still going to take as many migrants
01:53into the country as would have come by small boats anyway. Yeah Mark the records have been smashed
01:59this year so far obviously Keir Starmer is still banging on about smashing the gangs this is just yet
02:07another fallacy this new stuff the French police are supposedly going to be using tear gas to push
02:12migrants away from using the small boats but it's not going to stop them is it really let's face it
02:17well it'll delay them that's about all it will really do if we're honest here we did get an
02:26admission in recent weeks from the Prime Minister that the situation in the channel was deteriorating
02:32a real obvious statement there a kind of statement of the basic facts that anybody can see for
02:40themselves with the numbers arriving as you say at record levels and yes the French police have been
02:49getting a bit more robust over the last couple of weeks firing tear gas and pepper spray in an effort
02:55to try to disperse the migrants this pushback policy by the way of pushing small boats in shallow
03:02water back to shore we don't even know if that will actually come to fruition it's supposed to
03:09begin in a day or two's time next month but the problem is there is a legal challenge in the French
03:17courts just like the UK face multiple challenges over its Rwanda scheme well the pushback policy
03:24is being challenged in the French courts so that might delay things it might scupper that plan
03:30all together and all of the while the migrants keep on coming and even if the pushback policy
03:37was enacted and was successful what is it really going to do except disperse all of those migrants
03:44back into the dunes back into the camps they'll meet up again with the people smugglers and they'll
03:49try another day until they eventually get over to the UK
03:53you
