00:00Labour are giving the right to vote to 16 and 17-year-olds.
00:05This is part of some, you might say, shocking new electoral reforms.
00:09Yeah, this is all in a bid to modernise democracy, apparently,
00:12and restore trust in politics among young people.
00:15The government are going to look to extend voter ID to include bank cards
00:18and impose tougher rules to prevent foreign interference during elections.
00:23We're dropping the news. We want to discuss this, Carol.
00:26Yeah.
00:27Labour obviously think this will be good for them.
00:29The 16 and 17-year-olds are going to be able to vote. Will it?
00:34Do you know what? No, because a poll came out today
00:37and said that half of 16-year-olds don't want to vote.
00:39But anyway, that's by the by.
00:41And Labour are being really stupid here
00:42because I think that a lot of young people now are on to reform.
00:46If you look at Farage, after he was in the jungle and went on TikTok,
00:49he got millions of young followers.
00:51Anyway, that's by the by.
00:52But this is a desperate attempt by a government that knows it's stuffed.
00:57And to try and stay in power, it's going to give votes to immature, inexperienced kids
01:04who, frankly, you know, when you're 16, and I'm not being insulting, you know, you've got teenagers,
01:09I wouldn't necessarily trust them across the road, never mind put the next government in power.
01:13And I just think it's a really bad move.
01:15Kids aren't developed, politically developed at 16.
01:17You might get the odd one who is, who's like, you know, who was very invested in politics at that age, but very few.
01:25And Labour are doing this because, historically, young people have always voted for the Labour Party.
01:29Yeah, and those days are gone.
01:31I think you're right.
01:32You've hit the nail on the head in this fact that actually the younger people that I talk to,
01:36and I've got two teenagers in my life, they are all much more inclined to lean to the right.
01:41Which I think is even more important that Labour is doing this and doing it in the name of democracy, frankly.
01:48Think back to being 16.
01:50Not everybody goes to university.
01:51They join the jobs market.
01:52They go out there.
01:53They earn.
01:53They pay taxes.
01:54Why shouldn't you be able to vote as well and have a say in your future?
01:57So it's about forward-looking decisions.
01:59Things we vote on today.
02:00Won't it backfire on Labour at the next election?
02:03Well, that's up to Labour to counter.
02:03Because so many young people love reform.
02:05Well, maybe they do, and that's an electoral problem that Labour has.
02:09But this is a democratic decision we're seeing being made.
02:12And it's incredibly important that people can have a say in their future.
02:15Dare I bring it up, but look at Brexit.
02:17A lot of the people who voted for Brexit have died.
02:19They will never see what the impact of that is.
02:21A lot of the young people who may not have voted for it are suffering the consequences.
02:25They can't go and live and work elsewhere.
