00:00Andrew Ranger please. Thank you very much Chair. So we've discussed in quite some depth today

00:07the challenges that are being faced across the higher education sector and particularly

00:12concerning in the decline in participation of Welsh young people in higher education as well.

00:18So I'd be really interested in how confident you are that the current financial crisis is temporary

00:22and that the sector can recover and that you know and how do we ensure these rounds of redundancies

00:28at many institutions are the last for the foreseeable future. So for start with Professor

00:33Timmis please. Okay I think so from an Aversworth perspective I'm confident that we are now on top

00:42of what the problems that we have had the challenges we're facing and we are working through those

00:46at the moment. I think in terms of the the broader sector I am confident I'm always optimistic

00:51I'm a firm believer in the power of education and the transformative impact that it can have.

00:56I really am and and so for on that reason I think I am optimistic. I think it is challenging though

01:04for the sector and I go back to what colleagues have said earlier you know we do need a sustainable

01:08financial model for the sector and that is absolutely key. I think all of us all the vice

01:14chancellors in in Wales and across the UK we're all committed to our institutions and wanting to see

01:19the best for what they can do but in order to have that we have to have a financially

01:24sustainable mechanism and a stable policy landscape in which to operate.
